1. Question 3
What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
2. What is a media
institution?
A media institution is a
company/organisation that can produce,
publicise/market, distribute and screen
films such as Odeon, Via, Netflix etc.
3. What processes would my
product go through?
• My product would begin in cinemas and after it had been
on screen for approximately 4 to 5 weeks, depending on
how successful in has been at the box office, it would stop
being screened.
• After this it may be produced for DVD consumption and
sold in shops.
• Very soon after the DVD was released it may be added to
online streaming sites such as Netflix, Lovefilm or Amazon
Prime and also TV on demand services such as Sky Box
Office . However, it may instead be released to streaming
sites first as an alternative or add-on to it’s cinematic
release. Soon after it has been released online services
such as Sky Movies can pick up the film.
4. What kind of media institution
would distribute my thriller
product?
My product is a teen-thriller type of film.
Therefore, I believe that it would appeal
to a wide variety of audiences (see
Question 2). Because of this I think that
more mainstream institutions such as
multiplexes and online streaming sites
would distribute my two-minute opening
if it were to be made into a feature length
film.
5. Multiplex cinemas are large, corporate organizations that are
spread over multiple locations i.e. in big towns/cities
throughout a country. Examples of multiplex cinemas would
be Odeon and Vue.
My product could be screened in places like this because it
has a wide range of target audiences due to the characters it
has in it and the issues the film addresses. Multiplexes appeal
to the young generation (my main target audience) not only
because of the caliber of film that is shown in them but also
because of the other experiences that may be encountered.
Young people are attracted to the size, the options of food,
drink and gaming (as most multiplexes have an arcade)
available. Young people also enjoy multiplexes because of the
add-ons they can gain access to such as surround sound and
3D, which art-house cinemas cannot offer.

6. Online Streaming
WebsitesThough streaming websites usually come with a
subscription fee, many are willing to pay it. Due to this
it is a good platform to publish a film on to because it
will reach a widespread audience not just in the UK but
globally i.e. Netflix has 57.4 million subscribers as of
Jan 2015. Netflix has a great appeal to younger
generations because of the lack of real effort it
requires, it is a service that can be used at home or on
the go, and can be fitted in around the hectic lifestyles
of young people.
