Evaluation Question 3-
What kind of media institutions
might distribute your media
product and why?
Companies that distribute thriller films
Warner Brothers
• Multinational company
• Subsidiary of conglomerate
Time Warner
• Hold a 13.4% market share
of the film industry
• Distribute their own films
through subsidiaries of Time
Warner
• Have produced award
winning thrillers such as:
The Shawshank
Redemption (1994)
Seven (1995)
The Dark Knight (2008)
Inception (2010)
Film 4
• Independent company
• Owned by Channel 4
• Distribute through external
companies such as Sony
Tristar
• Have produced renowned
thrillers such as:
Trainspotting (1996)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
This is England (2006)
Multinational: Independent:
Which type of media institution do I think would
suit ‘Destitute’ best?
Multinational organisation
When looking back at our thriller opening ‘Destitute’ I believe that the best type of media
institution to distribute our media product would be a multinational corporation such as
Warner Brothers. My main reasoning for this is the relatability and normality within the
opening of ‘Destitute’ that would resultantly lead to a mass target audience as many people
may be intrigued by how a scenario as displayed at the end of our opening occurs and how
such a scenario escalates or is resolved. ‘Destitute’ also attempts to reflect the zeitgeist of
poverty in the world with the UK’s poverty rate rising three years according to the UK
government website. Consecutively, ‘Destitute’ may attract interest purely because of one
of the protagonists being homeless .
A multinational organisation would be ideal for ‘Destitute’ because of their financial
capabilities that would allow for a large budget which would consequently enable us to
utilise privileges of a large budget that would appeal to an international audience such as
renowned actors and directors. If a company like Warner Brothers were to assist in the
production and distribution of ‘Destitute’, it would greatly benefit our publicity as we could
potentially build interest in our film through screening adverts on Time Warner’s
subsidiaries such as HBO which would allow for a mass audience who may not usually
encounter thriller films to see our product and potentially be encouraged to watch
‘Destitute’.
Films distributed by Warner Brothers
(multinational):
Inception(2010) I Am Legend (2006) Oceans eleven (2001)
Which type of media institution do I think would
suit ‘Destitute’ best?
Independent organisation
However, the opening we have produced of ‘Destitute’ was produced on a very low
budget already which could perhaps indicate that an independent company may be
interested in producing ‘Destitute’ because of the limited funding required . Typically,
independent companies have lower budgets and may also view our project as a safe
investment as it appeals to a mass audience rather than targeting a niche group as
some independent companies prefer to target niche audiences, allowing the production
company to distribute and exhibit the product through many means. If an independent
company were to produce our media product they could outsource a global distributer
in order to maximise their sales, similar to Film 4 acquiring the assistance of Sony Tristar
to distribute Trainspotting T2 in order to reach a global audience as Trainspotting T2 did
(UK, Europe, USA and Australia). So far within the production of ‘Destitute’ all of the
actors, locations and production has taken place in the UK and would therefore classify
as a British film on the BFI cultural test which may consequently attract Independent
British film companies, such as Film 4.
Films distributed by Film 4 (independent):
Room(2015) Slumdog Millionaire(2008) 127 Hours (2010)
Alternative distribution methods

However, within the new generation of technology there are alternative ways to distribute
our thriller film ‘Destitute’, if we were unable to obtain the backing of a independent or
multinational production company. For example, we could use YouTube to distribute our
product. YouTube provides a huge platform that reaches out to a wider audience that use
the internet. This would potentially suit our film because of our target audience of 12-45
years of age, therefore using technologies such as YouTube may be ideal as our target
audience predominantly fit into the generation that use technologies including the internet
on a day to day basis.
The distribution of ‘Destitute’ on a platform such as YouTube links to David Gauntlet's
theory media 2.0, this states that there is an interest in the massive ‘long tail’ of
independent projects such as those found on YouTube. This therefore may suggest that the
distribution of our media product on YouTube may be successful in targeting the new
dimension of film distribution offered by YouTube and could consequently lead to ‘Destitute’
gathering a larger viewership due to factors such as YouTube being free and its vast
accessibility across the world which could increase the global audience of ‘Destitute’.

We could also use distributers such as Netflix to excel our media product. Netflix
consists of a large database of films and suggests films that the audience may enjoy
based on previous films that they watch. Therefore this may be beneficial for
‘Destitute’ as it would assist in promoting the film to the intended target audiences
who have an interest in thriller films. As a result of technological convergence the
accessibility of films on Netflix has grown immensely with it now being available to
watch on almost every smart device including mobile phones. This could potentially
benefit ‘Destitute’ as it provides a variety of places and mediums for our thriller to
be consumed. However, if we were to distribute through Netflix, it would mean that
our media product is only available to Netflix users and could consequently limit our
potential viewership if we were to distribute through Netflix.
