3. RESEARCH
Strengths
•Easy to find many different music videos as YouTube is one of the
largest sites
•Looking at multiple music videos helped me to take inspiration from
many different music videos incorporating different ideas portrayed in
them.
•Research also persuaded me to use transitions which I had looked up
such as certain camera movements and also edit transitions. This
research helped me combine the animation with the camerawork.
Weaknesses
•I only use YouTube as my source instead of using other sources so I
may have restricted myself.
•Given more time I could have looked at more music videos to improve
my music video.
•Only looked at one type of music video style and could have looked at
many different styles.
4. PLANNING
Strengths
•When I came to filming it made to filming take significantly quicker
than planned for.
•It also made sure that nothing I needed to film was missed out or
forgotten about.
•Reminded me about specific items/props which were needed in the
specific scene.
Weaknesses
•I was happy with the plan on whole however due to a change in
plans rather than filming In one day it had to change to splitting it
over two days due to the actor having work and it being too dark.
•Some of the camera effects like the dolly zoom didn’t work that
well so I chose not to use the clips
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
I believed that time was a little delayed with my actor
being available within the editing allocated weeks along
with illness which I gathered in the final week which
made me a week overdue. However with additional time I
would definitely put more time into the animation and
improve specific areas. If I had better times to film rather
than very early in the morning or late at night I would
have better lighting to film in and therefore be able to
colour grade a little better.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
Final piece
Existing products
In order to try
and relate this I
kept a blur with
low shutter
speed similar to
the slow
moving camera
shots in
Entangled by
Lorn.As you can see
I also took
some more
inspiration
from
Entangled by
Lorn including
facial shots as
is provides a
subtlety to the
sceneI also look at
bye bye
macadam for
inspiration
which gave me
the idea of
including
animation into
the music
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
I also converted
the animation to
black and white
in keeping with
the old TV but
also in keeping
with the music
video I took
inspiration from
bye bye macadam
- Rone For every single clip I applied warp
stabilizer vfx which is common precise
for music videos or anything which
requires movement if you don’t have a
gimbal. This smooths the footage
stabilising the footage sacrificing the
camera resolution usually cutting small
sections around the edge but is worth
it. I tried to get smooth camera work
similar to Entangled by lornI also changed the audio is specific
locations to match the visuals
8. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
With the animation I had to
resize and move the objects
frame by frame however I also
used the vfx mirror to save me
time.
I also used liquify and CC lens
to liquidise the animation
giving in a smoother look.
Finally I matched the animation
in sync with the music looking
at the waveforms of the music
to get more accurate results.
Also taking inspiration from
bye bye macadam – Rone.
9. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
This is the first animation
section for this the main
effect that I used for almost
all of the clips was CC lens.
This distorted the footage
giving it a smoother look.
Also throughout some of the
clips I used effect CC lens
sun burst like in the fist clip
which gave some of the
animation an old vintage
look.
As you can see I used many
layers however my top layer
I used was a vintage overlay
which I set the opacity to
67% this also further more
gave the impression in was
10. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Strengths
• I tried to be creative to convey a story.
• Also kept it unique combining elements of different music videos
Weaknesses
• Some of the scene could have looked better if the lighting conditions
were better or I could film at different times.
• This was my first time using a camera so my camera skills were very
limited and it was also my first time using animation however I was
keen to learn a bit about it.
11. AUDIENCE APPEAL
In relating to music videos by Rone
and Lorn I tried to combine
animation with camera work and
from looking at the questionnaire I
think I have done a decent job. I
believe that this appeals to my
target audience due to the video
being unique with the video having
inspiration from multiple music
videos. Also the modern but
vintage look gives a more
interesting appeal from looking at
my questionnaire.
Also from doing a fair amount of
research a lot of music videos have
a lot of repetitive scenes however I
tried to include many different
scenes and to break them up with
animation to keep the interest of
the viewer.
13. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
It was different
Included different techniques apart from camera work
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
A bit short. Could be better with another minute
Storyline a little confusing.
14. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
Like the combination of animation with camera work
Like the transitions between clips
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Maybe a little longer
Some of the clips were a little dark
15. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
Like the confusing storyline
The camera footage was stable and not too shaky
Liked the audio changes with reverb
Like the vintage look and vintage items
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Some of the clips are a little dark
16. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that some of the clips were a little dark and contrasted other
clips which had significantly better lighting however as it winter it gets
dark very quickly I had to the best with what I had.
I also agree that the animation complements the camera work well.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
Not sure I could have made it much longer given the time period I had
for production as by doing animation is ads significant work taking up
most of the production time. However given more time I could have
increased how complex the animation was along with increasing the
length of the music video
17. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
If I could change one thing it would be
to re-shoot some of the footage as
due to the time of day it was too dark
effecting the editing process. In these
dark clips it prevented me from adding
a lut as it was just too dark. In a
couple clips it also appeared to look a
little grainy. With more time I would
re-shoot these. With more time I
would also make the animation more
complex.
