The document summarizes and analyzes several existing products to inform the development of a new game. It describes Smacky Cars, an 8-bit inspired mobile game involving dodging cars to collect coins. It also outlines N+, a platformer with a fixed background and basic colors focused on gameplay. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is discussed for its illusion of speed through a moving background. SimCity 4 is mentioned for its grid-based city layout and sound design. The document concludes that these games generally have a point or objective to strive for, and the creator plans to give the impression of free-roaming bots towards an end point, as inspired by Need for Speed.
2. Existing
Product
• Smacky Cars- Capedy LLC
• This is an app on the phone
which uses 8 bit graphics which
is inspired by games from the
early 90s. It also has a clear and
distinct theme song along with
an addicting game process of
dodging cars to collect gold
coins. It is also online so you can
challenge your friends as a PvP
game.
Also the colours used for the background are fairly dull
and this is done as the focus is one the cars with the
background moving around the main car which is the
clearest in bright ruby red.
3. Existing Product
• N+ Game - Metanet Software (2007)
• This game as a fixed background with
elements which move within the game
which intern can create busy environments.
This way it is much easier to develop
difficulty levels as many variable can be
changed fairly easily. The movement of only
the ninja character and a few obstacles
makes it much easier to animate effectively.
• The colour scheme in this game is less
important so the colours are very basic and
there is not a wide range as the focus was
put on the gameplay. However in a basic
game like this there is no need for a complex
colour scheme. This appeals to people due
to how there are many levels of difficulty
there are and how levels are constantly
being added due to the simplistic nature of a
fixed background
4. Existing Product
• Need for speed Hot pursuit – EA
(2010)
• The background moves around
the car creating the illusion of high
speed. It is also a 3rd person game
however this can be changed. The
colour scheme is set to be as realistic
as possible for the time (2010).
Although this has noting to do with
pixel art I chose it due to the idea of
police cars chasing normal cars in a
race. This is, apart from the graphics
was the main selling point.
Looking at the disk cover im
taking inspiration as the cars
are portrayed from the same
perspective as Im interested
in using
5. Existing
Product
• SimCity 4- maxis (2003)
• During 2003 the graphics were good.
• However in this day the lighting and
shadows are very minimalistic with the colour
range being fairly Poor.
• However Im looking at this game due to the
layout of the city with the roads placed on a
grid using horizontal and vertical lines along
with the buildings.
• Also the sound is very appropriate with the
general background sound of a city along with
specific sounds for each type of building when
clicked on.
I believe the audience appeal was due to the
large scale and uniqueness of the game.
6. Research
Analysis
• These games tend to have one thing
in common and that is a purpose
such as a point to reach or complete
within a set time
• What aspects of the research will
you include within your on work?
– Similar to need for speed I plan
to give the impression of free
roaming bots in the way of an
objective or an end point.
