5 photographs Tom Jenkins
1. The most striking part of this image is the number 11 n Johnny Wilkinson’s back.
Everything on the image is deliberately framed to show the scale of the fans that are
supporting this man. The depth of field is narrow so you can only focus on the main
man. Everything is looking at him, armed stretched to him and this draws our eyes to
him. The lighting used is the flood lights of the pitch, no shadows are shown. This
image captures a moment of history, this is what Tom Jenkins specialises in. There is
gratitude towards the man, and he brings joy to fans. This photograph does also have
connotations of religion, Johnny is almost worshipped by his fans, as if he is a god.
His arms are also stretched out, as if he his showing his appreciation by simply
touching his fans.
2. The most striking part of this image is the models face. The stadium and all of the
models body has been deliberately framed. A broad depth of field is used to show
the Olympic stadium, this is an iconic location that people would easily recognize.
This photograph is clearly staged as there is no motion in the models movements, but
this was to create a moment of history. The strong low angle shot is used in this
image to make the man appear powerful and strong, he appears even bigger than the
Olympic stadium. High contrast lighting is used and the lighting is focused on the
models face as he is a recognizable figure. The light blue sky and clouds in the
background cause the model to stand out. The model is wearing clearly labelled
sportswear as this is an image used in advertising. This is because this image is used
to promote a certain sports company. No direct address is used by the model to
make him appear even more focused on what he is doing and where he is going.
3. The most striking part of this image is the footballer player Ronaldo. He is the most
focus in the whole image. Two footballers, the stadium, crowd and the goalkeeper
with the ball are framed. The foreground consists of the goalkeeper and the
ball, these are out of focus. The footballers in the mid-ground are the most in
focus, whilst Ronaldo being the most in focus. The crowd in the background are out
of focus. A narrow depth of field is used in this photo as Ronaldo is the only one in
focus. Ambient lighting is used in the photograph. A fast shutter speed camera
would've been used on this photograph to capture movement in the photograph. A
photograph like this requires pure luck to get so perfectly, the photograph is taken in
Old Trafford and the image is of a perfect point just before either a goal is scored, or
the ball misses the net. A rule of thirds is used in this photograph on Ronaldo, that is
why our eyes are drawn to him first.
4. The most striking part of the image is the man directly centre of the photograph. It
stands out because it is the part of the image that is most in focus. In the photograph
there is 4 players on the pitch in the mid-ground and the audience in the background.
The depth of field of this photograph is very narrow, the only part of the image in
focus is the centre of the image. Low contrast lighting is in the image as there are
very little shadow and the image is taken in natural daylight. A long shot is used in
this photograph so all of the image can be seen by the audience. The man in the
centre is most in focus because he is the main man in this image, it seems as if
almost everyone in the image is looking at him. He is not making direct address with
the audience as he is completely focused on the game.
5. The most striking part of the image is the lead runner, she is the most in focus in the
image and is making direct address with the audience as well as being centre of the
image. In the image is 4 runners, three of them are more in focus than the woman at
the back, this signifies they’re more important than the woman at the back as if they
are Gold, Silver and bronze and the woman at the back is nothing. In the foreground
Is the centre woman, most in focus. In the mid ground is two other runners, slightly
less in focus and in the background is the 4th runner, very much out of focus. The
photograph has a narrow depth of field as only one runner is truly in focus. The
photograph uses low contrast lighting, possibly daylight, as there are no shadows in
the photograph. The shot used is a mid shot so all the runners can be seen by the
audience easily and their facial expression can easily be seen. The woman in focus
has the most noticeable expression on her face, she is absolutely amazed she has
won this race and it completely shows in her expression.
