2. The thing I find most striking about this
image is that the net in the foreground is out
of focus, compared to the mid-ground and the
background. This image would have been
taken using a fast shutter speed camera, and
the fact that the photo is positioned perfectly
as we can see the focus of the photo
(Ronaldo) right in between Reina’s arms. It
also seems weird that the focus of the photo is
in the mid-ground instead of the foreground.
The image captures a moment where we don’t
know what is about to happen. The ball has
been captured in a position where we don’t
know if the ball will enter the net, or if Reina
has saved it. The fact that the shot was taken
from behind the net makes it seem like it was
taken from a fan’s perspective. It has a fairly
narrow depth of field, as we can see quite far
into the background, and the natural lighting
fits perfectly with the photo.
3. The thing that I find most striking about this image
is how much of a serious tone it gives off, and who
the photo sums up status and physical power. It is a
low angle shot, which makes Oscar Pistorius look
powerful and strong. It has a broad depth of field as
everything is in focus. It also looks like artificial
lighting has been used as well as natural light. This
image portrays how he is an inspiration to people,
as he was the first disabled Olympic athlete to
compete against able-bodied people. It seems like
it is trying to make a moment instead of capturing
one. This image is staged rather than the other two
photos that are capturing a moment. It is clear that
there is no movement in his limbs, as if he was
actually running the background would be out of
focus. The background colours implement the
colours he is wearing - it makes him stand out. He
is also purposefully wearing branded clothing
which implies that this photo was used in a
newspaper, advertisement, or magazine article.
4. This image stand out to me because of the fans and it
has religious connotations. The fact that the
photograph was taken from behind Jonny Wilkinson,
as it makes it look like they are worshipping him if he
were a God. This makes sense with the context of the
image as Jonny has just won the Rugby Union World
Cup for England with the last kick of the game. The
shot is taken from directly behind Jonny shows all of
the fans praising him for winning the World Cup.
Jonny is placed in the foreground of the image and it
goes out of focus as you look into the mid-ground and
background. The arms pointing towards Jonny draws
attention to him as well as the use of the tunnel and
the fact that everyone is looking at him. It has a fairly
narrow depth of field as we can see quite far into the
background and the majority of objects in the
background are out of focus. This image captures a
moment which tells a story which is that the fans are
happy because Jonny won the World Cup for England
and that the fans are praising him like a God.
5. The thing I find most striking about this image is that
it captures one of the most famous Olympic games
moments ever. It illustrates the precise moment when
Usain Bolt realises he won the biggest race in the
competition. The fact that his arms are stretched out
implies that this image has religious connotations,
similar to the image of Jonny Wilkinson, as Usain is
depicted here as somewhat of a God. The image is
framed so that Bolt is seen in the centre, to make him
the focus of attention. The fact that he is in the
foreground proves this. In the mid-ground we see
two other runners who finished behind Bolt. Both are
slightly out of focus. In the background we see fans
in the stadium who are very out of focus. This
signifies that this image has a very narrow depth of
field, as we can see quite far past Usain in the
forground. From this image, we can tell that it was
taken during the evening, and artificial lighting is
used as the floodlight in the Olympic stadium would
have been used. The long shot of Bolt makes him
look big compared to the others behind him, like he
is dominant over them.
6. The thing I find most striking about this image is the
amount of colours used and how attractive the image
is to look at. The cyclists are the main focus of this
image, and draw the audience’s attention. As soon as
vibrant colours are used people immediately focus on
where they see these colours. In the foreground, we
see cyclists and fans moving towards the mid-ground
which brings our attention there, where we see the
same thing, until we see the background where the
sky and a church is visible which is slightly out of
focus. This shows that there is a very slight narrow
depth of field, as not much is out of focus. Natural
lighting is used here, as there are shadows of the
cyclists on the ground. There is also low contrast
lighting which created a greater range of tones which
subtly change from light to dark. The colour of the
sky as well as the natural lighting brings somewhat
warmth to the image. This is also a high angle shot to
depict a moment where people stand in the street
supporting a sport that they love. It shows how
dedicated the fans are as they will stand there for
hours just to see a couple of minutes of the cyclists.
