Who are the people in the photograph?
1. There are four young boys that are riding their bikes. They are all in Germany because
the salute is the Nazi salute and the bikes and uniforms are the same, similar to what an
army would do.
2. There is a group of soldiers in what looks like a army base camp in Vietnam.
3. A group of U.S officials overlooking the dumping of alcohol during prohibition
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from
the photo that tells you this.
1. The kids in the first picture are probably going to or coming form somewhere away
from their homes. The bikes and bags lead me to believe that they were coming from
somewhere.
2. The soldiers in the second photo are just hanging out and relaxing. Most of them have
their shirts off and are smoking a cigarette.
3. The people in the last picture are all witnessing the dumping of alcohol. The more
important looking men seem to be pleased with this action while the working men
watching don't seem to be as thrilled.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
1. The photographer was probably trying to convey a message that everyone, no matter
your age, is an asset in times of war.
2. The message was probably trying to say that not everything about war is horrible.
3. The men in the picture don't seem to be angry so maybe the message is that bad ideas
might not be immediately a bad time
Why is this photograph important to history?
1. This picture shows what life is like for a country that is the center point of a war.
2. This picture is important because it documents a time of war that not many people
supported. Some of the soldiers look like they don’t want to be there as well
3. The Prohibition Era was a defining time in American history. A lot of culture and
changes in society were developed during this time period. This picture is an example of
the reason that society changed so much. By getting rid of the one thing that every
2. working man loved, the Government set in motion new, illegal ways for people to have
fun.
What questions does this photograph raise?
1. Where were they going/coming from?
2. Where exactly was this photo taken? How many missions had these men been on?
3. How did the officials choose that location to dispose of the booze? Was the alcohol
found being illegally stored somewhere or did they just do this to prove a point?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
1. A group of young Nazi children salute
2. A group of Vietnam War soldiers take a rest at a camp
3. Government businessmen look on as alcohol is dumped into a sewer during
Prohibition.
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
1. An archive for World War 2 pictures
2. A Vietnam veteran might have a bunch of info on what life was like in a camp. A war
archive might have some info on this picture
3. The Library of Congress might have more information stored in their archives. A
history professor might have information as well.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the
photograph
1. The younger kids actually know what is happening in the country, there was actually
another kid but they aren’t in the picture, they are tired.
2. They stole weapons from their enemies, it was really hot and humid, and not all of
these soldiers are from the United States.
3. The businessmen are proud of themselves, the civilians are not pleased with the scene
taking place, and that was probably some good booze.
