What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 Photo 1- The women are canning and storing food during the great depression. The women in
the picture are preparing food, and in the background there is a pressure cooker.
 Photo 2- It is during World War II, and Hitler is trying to develop a good image, because he is
shaking hands with the little boy while the others look on adoringly.
 Photo 3- It is the civil rights movement where African Americans are fighting for their freedom.
The police officers seem to be restraining the African Americans
 Photo 4- The man is dead and hanging from the torch from the statue of liberty.
 Photo 5- They are looking upon Ellis Island waiting on relatives. The statue of liberty is on Ellis
Island
 Photo 6- The officers are going through a medical exam before getting admitted to the army.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 Photo 1- The hardships of the great depression and having to can and store your own food.
 Photo 2- The photographer was trying to convey that Hitler was a good friendly person.
 Photo 3- Police cruelty during the civil rights movement
 Photo 4- That all men have a right to life and liberty, but America has turned its back on giving
liberty to African Americans.

 Photo 1- Shows that women had an important role in the great depression.
 Photo 2- It shows how the German people saw Hitler.
 Photo 3- It shows the plight of African Americans while trying to win their freedoms.
 Photo 4- It shows that African Americans haven’t always had the same rights and freedoms.

What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 Photo 1- Zoom in and see what the label on the can on the table is. Look at the wardrobe to try
and see what people wore at that time.
 Photo 2- Look at the type of outfit the boy is wearing to see where they are and what time
period.
 Photo 3- Zoom into the badge number. Could figure out what riot it was.
 Photo 4- Google it. Go to the library and read up on African Americans struggles.
 Photo 5- See what time period and country the clothing is from?
 Photo 6- Look at what type of uniforms they are wearing.
