Evaluation question 3
1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
By Jack Jones
2. Film marketing
• This is a process used by a distribution company in order
to market there film to its target audience. The way In
which a film is promoted is key to its success at the box
office and it can be promoted in many different ways
ranging from, trailers, posters, magazines, radio and TV
interviews etc.
• Ancillary products of a film play key parts in the
marketing stages for most films as they are the main
sources of promotion. Even through the evolution of
digital technology adding to the ways in which a film can
be produced, the heritage marketing techniques are still
very dominant.
3. The poster
As you can see to the right here is the first ancillary
product, as with the film itself ive tried to create a
blurry image to mask what’s going on, just like at the
ending of the film you have to make up your own mind
to what happened. Its also continues the vagueness of
the character, it keeps a mystery about themselves. It
complements the film as it carries over the essence of
war, through the green tone and the iconic army
uniform, ranging from the gun to the jacket. These are
instantly relatable to the genre and goes well with the
film as a promotional tool, due to it having a clear
connotations. The poster compliments well with the
overall film, firstly due to the image used being
representative of the film, along with the blurred
textures combined together they compliment each
other well as an overall production of the film.
4. Poster continued
Titles – The font used for the titles are rugged and
give an authentic effect relating to the sub genre of
war, however they don’t compliment my other
ancillary product, due to it being a different style
carried out in order to create the effect I wanted
to, as my magazine double page is inspired by little
white lies.
The next screenshot you can see is conventional
of almost every film poster. As you can see the
tagline is “One Map. One Shot.” which links in
with the films narrative that is carried out
throughout.
5. Magazine
As you can see this half of my magazine compliments my
poster directly through the use of the images I have
chosen, the two photographs I took on the right both show
images of the gun and the actor guy. This follows the same
iconic conventions to the one I used for my poster. They work
well as promotional tools for a short film due to them having
similarities that both link to the genre and will draw in the
target audience. The double page spread is inspired by the
little white lies
Another inspiration from the little white lies magazine
was the use of raw images to add diversity to the
page, as you can see here in the red they have used a
small revolver to fill the break between the
paragraphs, and I adopted the same effect but as purely
a visual element. Due to it being a gun it will instantly
draw the viewers eye as basically every gun can be
related to the genre of war, as well as it having an
Enfield within the revolver it all links back to my film
and the poster creating an effective promotional tool.
6. Magazine continued
Here as you can see that this half
of my magazine has taken
inspiration elements from the little
white lies double page spread
layout. Firstly as you can see
highlighted in red is where I took
inspiration from there critique
system of the piece of creative
work that they are writing an
article about. I believe it adds an
alternate to most reviews due to it
having a different style of
approaching the way in which its
analysed and offers, this also
shows I have followed conventions
of existing products. As well as this
I have also tried to choose a font
that fits the style of a little white
lies magazine, meaning it is
different to the one on my poster
however it is
7. The Short Film
• The short film has a continues military theme throughout, highlighted in red is a
screenshot taken from the short film. As you can see my ancillary products have
clear connection to the film itself, all of these provide clarity to the viewer to
create an effective promotional tool for the film. The narrative throughout the film
has conventions of short films, due to it having an alternate storyline and various
twists throughout, especially at the end. I believe that all three elements work
together well in order to create an effective promotional campaign for the short
film, as its very appealing to the target audience, it has a clear representation of
genre in which we are aiming at, as well as still having a unique and dynamic
style, attracting viewers for our film.
