1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. Genre
• My media trailer mainly uses rather develop or
challenge conventions of real media product.
However, there are aspects that could be
considered to be developing traditional forms.
Furthermore, there is also the concept of mixed
or a hybrid if genres, which I believe my trailer is.
My media trailer would be considered to a mix of
both crime thriller and romance. Due to the fact
that my product is a mix of genres this means
that there are many convention to use, develop
and challenge.
3. Conventions of crime thriller trailers
• Within the thriller genres there are features that are
focused on such as editing, mise en scene, sound and
cinematography, as these are often used to create
suspension. Although, due to the fact that my media
product is a mix of genres some of these features may
not particularly reflect the thriller genre specifically.
However, specific conventions that I have used within
my media trailer to reflect the thriller genre of it are;
creating tension and suspense, crime, and the concept
of a villain and a hero. I attempted created tension and
suspense from the outset of my trailer, firstly in the
very first shot in my trailer as the curiosity of why the
protagonist is sat there.
4. How my media trailer uses
conventions of real media products
• My trailer uses conventions of real media products through both content
of the trailer itself as well as mise en scene etc. Firstly, the plot of my
trailer illustrates the use of conventional aspects of a thriller/romance due
to the hybrid of crime and violence along side a relationship between the
two main characters. For example, I used 'The Place Beyond The Pines' for
inspiration when making my trailer, so I focused on the conventions used
within that to then recreate in my own way for my trailer. (On the next
slide is a screen shot of genre analysis I carried out of 'The Place Beyond
The Pines' trailer). I also used conventions of real media products through
the setting of the main scenes. This aspect mainly links to the romance
side of my trailer as the seaside setting reflects the romance; however the
uneasiness of the weather suggests the thriller aspects. Furthermore, the
thriller aspects are also portrayed through the use of props such as the
gun and handcuffs.

6. How my media trailer
develops/challenges conventions of
real media products
• My media trailer also develops and challenges conventions
of real media products as well as using them. For example,
one way in which I challenge genre is through simply
combining both the thriller and romance rather than
following a specific genre. Furthermore, the fact that my
trailer has a strong female role as one of the main character
slightly develops/challenges conventional aspects due to
the fact that typically the strong leading role is a male
character. In addition, I also challenges conventions of the
romance genre in ways such as movies of this genre often
have a happy ending of the romance continuing. However,
although my trailer illustrates that it is not a necessarily
unhappy ending, it is not perhaps what would be expected
from the romance genre.
7. Main codes and convention of film
magazine covers.
Masthead- Typically a masthead is positioned horizontally and the top of the page.
With style and font of it attracting its target audience, usually by being bold or having
something unique about it.
Font- The amount of fonts that are used on a magazine cover are usually kept fairly
minimal in order to keep them from being too distracting. The colour of the text is
usually kept in a theme along with previous issues of the magazine or the cover image.
The size of text varies with the masthead usually being the largest with subtitle and
cover lines slightly smaller.
Cover image- the cover image is usually one of the actors (often the main protagonist).
Usually the actor is looking into the camera with a mid/close up shot. Any props or
clothing is linked to the movie that is being advertised.
Cover lines- cover lines and subtitle are used to advertise stories that are included
within the magazine. These are placed on the front so that it draws interest from the
reader.
8. How my magazine cover uses
conventions of real media products
• I used an issue of ‘Total Film’ in order to base my design on.
I chose to base my design on this magazine as it follows
classic conventions such as the bold masthead in a font that
follows a theme for the rest of the issues and the layout of
the cover lines. Therefore, I used the codes and
conventions of real media products as I replicated these
onto the design of my magazine cover. I also followed the
convention f keeping with the colour scheme used for the
rest of my media products that I produced. However, not
only did I stick to the colour scheme of the other products I
produced I kept the colours used on the whole magazine
cover minimal so that they are not too distracting to the
audience.
9. How my magazine cover
develops/challenges conventions of
real media products
• One way in which my magazine cover challenges convention of real
media products is by the fact that that the layout of the real media
product I based mine on was advertising a different genre.
However, I think that I was able to develop this and use it effectively
despite the fact my trailer is of a different genre. However the main
way in which I challenged conventions of real media products is
thought the fact that the background image I used is not the main
protagonist or any of the characters looking into the camera.
Instead of this I chose to use a different shot that is still a mid shot
however it includes both of the main characters with neither
looking into the camera. However, I feel that this image draws the
attention of the audience as the tension between the two
characters evident. Furthermore, it also
10. Main codes and conventions of a film
poster
• Film posters tend to be bold, eye catching and
interesting in order to draw the attention of the
audience. Therefore, this means that the main
image is usually something intriguing to draw
attention to it. The placement of the title varies
however it is often placed at the top of across the
center of the poster. Another convention of a film
poster is that the genre is usually fairly evident
from the layout/content. There is often a small
amount of text showing actors/directors name or
reviews etc.
11. How my poster uses conventions of
real media products
• I feel my poster uses conventions of real media products as I based
the layout on a real product which I then used to create mine.
Although, the magazine cover I used as inspiration was advertising a
different genre I thought that the layout of it could be used to
attract the target audience I was trying to reach. I used the same
colour scheme for the font that I had used throughout my trailer
and poster so that they could all be easily linked together.
Furthermore, I felt the image I used successfully portrays the genre
of my trailer, as the two main characters hugging illustrates the
romance clearly; although the tear rolling down the female roles
cheek illustrates that there is something slightly different (this being
the crime thriller side aspect). In addition, another way in which I
used conventions of real film posters is my making the title of the
film the largest piece of text on the poster with it placed across the
center.
12. How my poster develops/challenges
conventions of real media products
• My poster doesn’t particularly develop or
challenge conventions of real media products
as I attempted to follow many of them.
