JFE (Japan) Steel 1.5 GPa-Grade High-Tensile Strength Cold-Rolled Steel
Sheets Adopted for First Time in Vehicle Body Structural Parts
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
6
Solution Description
JFE Steel Corporation announced that its 1.5 GPa-grade (1470 MPa) high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets are now being utilized in vehicle body structural parts, the world’s first such adoption
in a cold press forming application (based on an internal examination). This constitutes the highest strength of vehicle body structural parts obtained through cold press forming. The steel sheets are
being utilized in several applications by automakers, and JFE Steel has begun supplying these sheets to auto parts suppliers. In order to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a collision and improve
fuel economy through weight reductions, efforts are ongoing to increase the strength of vehicle body structural parts. JFE Steel’s 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets are already
being utilized in parts with simple shapes, such as bumpers and door impact beams. However, the adoption of high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets for vehicle body structural parts with complex
shapes has been limited to the 1310MPa grade until now, because increasing the strength of sheets can result in decreased cold press formability and delayed fracture resistance.1 To overcome with
these issues, the adoption of 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets through a hot press forming process2 is becoming more widespread. However, this requires the steel to be heated to high
temperature and then maintained at constant temperatures for cooling, which decreases the number of parts that can be pressed per unit of time. Improvements have therefore been desired from a
number of perspectives, including manufacturing costs With the new 1.5 GPa-grade steel sheets, the high cooling capacity of the proprietary WQ (water quenching) method-based continuous annealing
process line located at JFE’s West Japan Works (Fukuyama District) was used to reduce the addition of alloy elements and minimize non-uniformity of the steel sheet microstructure (Fig. 1). As a
result, particularly high yield strength3 and delayed fracture resistance were simultaneously realized even with the 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets while maintaining cold press
formability equivalent to that of 1310 MPa-grade sheets. This enabled the utilization of the 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets in vehicle body structural parts through a low-cost cold press
forming process. The superiority of the newly adopted steel sheets in terms of their strengths, delayed fracture resistance and cold press formability was recognized by automakers, and application
technology was developed in a joint effort between JFE Steel and various automakers. These efforts have culminated in the deployment of the steel sheets in the manufacture of vehicle body structural
parts. Going forward, JFE Steel will endeavor to expand the range of application of these steel sheets as well as to further develop high-performance high-tensile strength steel sheets. JFE Steel is
pleased to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by supporting the development of safe, environmentally friendly vehicles.

Solution Description
14Trees, a LafargeHolcim joint venture with CDC Group, the UK’s publicly owned impact investor, is deploying 3D printing technology at scale
to build affordable and low-carbon housing and schools in Africa, starting in Malawi. With its record speed of construction and optimised material
use, this technology reduces the carbon footprint for building new homes by up to 70%. Pioneering this technology in schools for the first time,
14Trees aims to address the country’s chronic infrastructure shortage while creating skilled local jobs. Using proprietary LafargeHolcim ink, this
innovative 3D printing process will significantly reduce the time and cost of building housing and schools in Malawi. UNICEF estimates a
shortage of 36,000 classrooms in Malawi which would take 70 years to build using conventional methods. According to 14Trees, this infrastructure
gap could be bridged in just ten years using 3D printing. Partnering with a range of NGOs, 14Trees is committed to solving this chronic shortage
at scale, starting with families and communities most in need. The project in Malawi relied on local 14Trees teams trained by LafargeHolcim and
COBOD, the 3D printing specialists. The teams included 3D machine operators, architects, civil and structural engineers and materials specialists.
The project also involved nearly forty people in the preparation of the 3D ink and in the construction with building trades such as carpenters,
roofers and painters. The walls of 14Trees’ first prototype house were built in Lilongwe in just 12 hours, compared to almost 4 days using
conventional methods. The walls of its first school, built in Salima, were printed in just 18 hours, as opposed to several days.

Solution Description
POSCO presented a blueprint on how to become a “green hydrogen company that leads the hydrogen economy” and pioneer decarbonization. To
materialize this vision, POSCO will establish a hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons by 2050 and achieve 30 trillion KRW in hydrogen
sales. In specific, POSCO will focalize on equipping itself with production capabilities and core technologies, including technology to produce
hydrogen by electrolyzing water and technology to extract hydrogen by 2030, and nurture the hydrogen business as the group’s growth engine to
take the lead in the future hydrogen market. The annual domestic demand for hydrogen, the next-generation source of clean energy, is expected to
increase to 1.94 million tons in 2030 and over 5.26 million tons in 2040. The field of application will also expand from the current petrochemical
industry to transport and power generation areas. Accordingly, the Korean government has launched the Hydrogen Economy Committee and
declared the Green New Deal policy to promote the transition to a hydrogen economy. Currently, POSCO possesses an annual hydrogen
production capacity reaching 7,000 tons, utilizing the Cokes Oven Gas during the steelmaking process and natural gas (LNG). Among them,
around 3,500 tons of byproduct hydrogen are extracted and used to control temperature and prevent oxidation while steelmaking. Also, POSCO is
furnished with capabilities necessary for producing and applying hydrogen, such as developing the world’s first steel products for hydrogen fuel
cell separators and supplying them to domestic hydrogen carmakers.

Solution Description
Packaging leader Smurfit Kappa has launched a new company called Recycling Dual GmbH to help German manufacturers and retail businesses reduce costs
and improve their sustainability efforts, in line with updated legislation. Recycling Dual offers an innovative and integrated holistic solution to track the entire
life cycle of paper, cardboard and carton packaging. The unique solution highlights duplication which can be removed from the supply chain and reduce
costs. For the first time Recycling Dual guarantees to close the full loop for paper-based packaging for its customers. The service provides them with a holistic
solution to ensure packaging from their products is recycled through a nationwide collection system. From 2021, Recycling Dual will be the only company
in the market with the ability to track the life cycle of paper, cardboard and carton packaging from production through to being recycled. The company was
set up in response to a federal law which was enacted last year requiring stricter recycling requirements for all manufacturers and retailers who use consumer
packaging as part of their supply chain, especially for e-commerce companies with e-commerce packaging. The law requires businesses to buy licences for
the packaging they use, and with costs expected to increase by up to 30% in 2021, this has led to a greater responsibility being placed on businesses to
increase their recycling rates. Additionally, failure to comply can result in significant fines. Recycling Dual organises the collection, sorting and recycling of
sales packaging for businesses across Germany ensuring strict recycling quotas are met. As part of the service, Recycling Dual works in collaboration with
numerous stakeholders including local municipalities and waste management companies.

companies, cities, states and regions, scores thousands of companies which disclose climate data through its platform each year. By doing so, the
competitive spirit of business to raise ambition and spur action on corporate climate action is harnessed for positive change. ArcelorMittal’s A- grade
is testament to the company’s efforts and contributions towards building a thriving economy that works for people and the planet in the long term. The
grade compares favourably to the global average D grade for metal smelting, refining and forming companies, and C grade for the steel sector
specifically. ArcelorMittal’s efforts are further reflected in the A grade scores achieved for governance, disclosure of climate related financial risk and
opportunities, strategy and planning and emissions reduction initiatives. Earlier this year, the company announced a group-wide commitment to
becoming carbon neutral by 2050, while it is targeting a reduction of 30% by 2030 in its European business. ArcelorMittal recognises the important role
of disclosing climate related financial risks and opportunities in achieving this goal, as well as developing the company’s two low-emissions technology
pathways.

MMK maintains high position in WWF Russia’s Environmental
Transparency Rating
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
15
For the second year in a row, Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) placed in the top ten most environmentally transparent metals and mining companies in
Russia, according to a rating compiled by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia. MMK was named as a company that avoided accidents or controversial
environmental situations in 2020. In 2020, the WWF Russia rating included 40 companies fr om the metals and mining sector. Like last year, MMK took 10th place.
WWF Russia has published its annual ratings since 2017. Their goal is to help reduce the burden on the environment and promote timely and transparent reporting
on the environmental impact of production among business and society. The rating is based on an assessment of three components: the company’s environmental
management, environmental impact and disclosure of information. At the end of the year, MMK took a particularly high position on the third criterion, ranking
6th-9th place. The Company pays great attention to the disclosure of complete and up-to-date information on sustainable development issues: for example, in July
2020, MMK published a report on sustainable development for 2019, compiled according to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. The rating compilers also
named MMK among the companies which were not party to any accidents or controversial environmental situations during the reporting period. The
environmental agenda is a key element of MMK's work: for example, as part of the development strategy up to 2025, the Company is implementing its Clean City
initiative, the aim of which is to reduce the Comprehensive Air Quality Index in Magnitogorsk, wh ere the Company's main production site is located, to less than
5 units, which corresponds to the definition of a "Clean City". Already in 2019, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment removed Magnitogorsk from
the list of cities with the highest level of air pollution.

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works operates a system for conducting behavioural based safety (BBS) audits, designed to reduce the risk of an accident
at work. A mobile application has been available since the end of 2019 for conveniently and efficiently registering safety violations. The main task of
the BBS audits is to conduct a behavioural safety audit to reduce the risk of an accident. The app's functions include recording dangerous behaviour or
violations of labour protection requirements (with the option to take a photo), identifying the root causes of hazardous activity and collecting
suggestions from employees to ensure their work is performed safely. Also, to prevent dangerous activity, it is possible to register the audit results before
a safety violation has occurred. Currently, both the web version and the mobile version of the application developed by MMK-Informservice have been
put into commercial operation. The app is available for all structural divisions of the plant., it is also being used in other MMK Group subsidiaries,
introducing the procedure for conducting and registering BBS audits. United Service Company also plans to connect users to the app by the end of the
year. At present, the app has the ability to record safety violations not only by the personnel of its division, but also by employees of other MMK Group
divisions and subsidiaries. The app was highly rated by middle-level managers in production departments, for whom it is important to have modern
technical tools that can quickly register the results of the BBS audit, allowing for a rapid response to unsafe employee behaviour. In the end, this helps
to reduce injuries at work and ensures the safety of the Company's personnel.

POSCO (South Korea) Pledges to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 And
Lead Low Carbon Society
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com

POSCO has vowed to become “Carbon Neutral” by 2050. As of recent, climate change has emerged as the greatest challenge for humanity, and POSCO’s
commitment to leading carbon neutrality is an especially meaningful one, considering the nature of the steel industry where the emission of CO2 is inevitable.
It is the first time for an Asian steelmaker with large-scale blast furnace operating systems (among Korea, China, and Japan) to officially declare a
carbon-neutral plan. POSCO plans to utilize carbon risk as an opportunity, overcoming its inevitable need for CO2 emission. Through innovative
technologies, such as CCUS(Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage), and hydrogen-based steelmaking, POSCO aims to equip itself with ‘low carbon
competitiveness’ which enables providing ‘green steel’. As being the representative manufacturer of South Korea, POSCO’s ambition to be carbon neutral
demonstrates its determination to play a leading role in line with the Korean government’s policy of achieving “2050 carbon neutrality” and implementing
the “Green New Deal”. In addition to this, POSCO has been making its climate-related data available to the public. Following its support for the TCFD (Task
Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) for the first time in the domestic manufacturing industry in March, POSCO issued “POSCO’s Dialogue for
Climate Action,” which includes the TCFD’s recommendations, along with its declaration of carbon neutrality. The report discusses POSCO’s plan to reduce
CO2 emissions by 20% in the short-term (by 2030) and 50% in the mid-term (by 2040) with a target to attain net zero emissions by 2050. An analysis of
climate scenarios highlighted in the TCFD recommendations was also included in this issue.

Severstal (Russia) completes construction of environmental facilities for a new
blast furnace
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
39
PAO Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has completed the construction of environmental facilities for blast furnace
No. 3. The modernization of blast furnace No. 3 will mitigate the environmental impact of pig iron production throughout the production chain through use of the best
available technologies. The main environmental advantage of the dust and gas capture facilities is the aspiration system and gas cleaning system. The aspiration system
cleans the air from the dust of workplaces and technological operations. The gas cleaning system cleans the blast furnace gas. The main operational activities during
which pollutants are released into the atmosphere from blast furnace No. 3 are the preparation and dosing of charge materials, loading the charge into blast furnaces, and
operating the casthouse. By covering dust and gas formation sites, the aspiration suction system, featuring control and shut-off valves, extracts contaminated air and gas
for cleaning. The aspiration valves are automatic. The process is organized from the places of discharge of cast iron and slag, using a skimmer and side suction from the
tap holes, which are covered. As the release of fusion products is carried out simultaneously from just one tap hole, suction is cut off from the other notches. The operating
mode of the valves is synchronized with that of the casting equipment. To prevent emissions of pollutants when loading materials into the furnace (through a coneless
loading device), emissions from the loading device are suppressed using compressed nitrogen, which is used to blow dirty gas from the blast furnace under the furnace
top. Dusty air from the intake chamber of the coneless loading device will be directed to the collector at the new central exhaust station (CVS). Cleaning the aspiration
air from dust will be carried out by bag filters. The filter consists of 1056 hoses, each 10m long. The particular bag filters procured by Severstal are characterized by their
compactness and large filtration area, which enables them to work effectively in cramped conditions.

Nornickel Shuts Down Smelter In Nikel Town

Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel and a major producer of platinum and copper, is shutting down a smelting
shop in the town of Nikel in Russia’s Murmansk region. It is the company’s oldest production facility to date. Its shutdown is part of Nornickel’s
comprehensive environmental programme, which aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact at all production sites. With the closure of the shop,
hazardous emissions into the atmosphere at the Russia’s Norwegian border will cease. The decision to close the smelting facility was made by Nornickel in
November 2019. The closure will completely eliminate sulphur dioxide emissions in the cross-border area with Norway. Due to the implementation of the
programme, it is planned to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions at Kola MMC by 50% in 2020 and by 85% by 2021. After the shutdown, the customer service
and the clean-up service will continue to operate in the shop. Within a year after the shutdown, the shop’s building will be prepared for mothballing: it will
be cleaned, materials containing non-ferrous metals will be collected and sent for recycling. The industrial site may be preserved if an option for its use can
be found. Nornickel supported a competition among investors willing to implement an industrial or cultural business project at the vacated smelter site. Its
prerequisite was the ecological transformation of the industrial zone, the creation of green production facilities and new jobs. The winning project was the
establishment of a metallurgical mini-mill for the production of grinding balls and long products (LLC Sirius). Nornickel plans to support the winner’s
project in the form of advisory assistance, commitments to repurchase part of the products, provide preferential terms and reduced tariffs for material and
technical resources, etc.

  • 12. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nib Solution Updates IT Shades Engage & Enable JFE (Japan) Steel 1.5 GPa-Grade High-Tensile Strength Cold-Rolled Steel Sheets Adopted for First Time in Vehicle Body Structural Parts For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 6 Solution Description JFE Steel Corporation announced that its 1.5 GPa-grade (1470 MPa) high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets are now being utilized in vehicle body structural parts, the world’s first such adoption in a cold press forming application (based on an internal examination). This constitutes the highest strength of vehicle body structural parts obtained through cold press forming. The steel sheets are being utilized in several applications by automakers, and JFE Steel has begun supplying these sheets to auto parts suppliers. In order to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a collision and improve fuel economy through weight reductions, efforts are ongoing to increase the strength of vehicle body structural parts. JFE Steel’s 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets are already being utilized in parts with simple shapes, such as bumpers and door impact beams. However, the adoption of high-tensile strength cold-rolled steel sheets for vehicle body structural parts with complex shapes has been limited to the 1310MPa grade until now, because increasing the strength of sheets can result in decreased cold press formability and delayed fracture resistance.1 To overcome with these issues, the adoption of 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets through a hot press forming process2 is becoming more widespread. However, this requires the steel to be heated to high temperature and then maintained at constant temperatures for cooling, which decreases the number of parts that can be pressed per unit of time. Improvements have therefore been desired from a number of perspectives, including manufacturing costs With the new 1.5 GPa-grade steel sheets, the high cooling capacity of the proprietary WQ (water quenching) method-based continuous annealing process line located at JFE’s West Japan Works (Fukuyama District) was used to reduce the addition of alloy elements and minimize non-uniformity of the steel sheet microstructure (Fig. 1). As a result, particularly high yield strength3 and delayed fracture resistance were simultaneously realized even with the 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets while maintaining cold press formability equivalent to that of 1310 MPa-grade sheets. This enabled the utilization of the 1.5 GPa-grade high-tensile strength steel sheets in vehicle body structural parts through a low-cost cold press forming process. The superiority of the newly adopted steel sheets in terms of their strengths, delayed fracture resistance and cold press formability was recognized by automakers, and application technology was developed in a joint effort between JFE Steel and various automakers. These efforts have culminated in the deployment of the steel sheets in the manufacture of vehicle body structural parts. Going forward, JFE Steel will endeavor to expand the range of application of these steel sheets as well as to further develop high-performance high-tensile strength steel sheets. JFE Steel is pleased to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by supporting the development of safe, environmentally friendly vehicles.
  • 13. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nib Solution Updates IT Shades Engage & Enable LafargeHolcim (Switzerland) : 14Trees pioneers 3D printing technology in Africa for affordable housing and schools For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 7 Solution Description 14Trees, a LafargeHolcim joint venture with CDC Group, the UK’s publicly owned impact investor, is deploying 3D printing technology at scale to build affordable and low-carbon housing and schools in Africa, starting in Malawi. With its record speed of construction and optimised material use, this technology reduces the carbon footprint for building new homes by up to 70%. Pioneering this technology in schools for the first time, 14Trees aims to address the country’s chronic infrastructure shortage while creating skilled local jobs. Using proprietary LafargeHolcim ink, this innovative 3D printing process will significantly reduce the time and cost of building housing and schools in Malawi. UNICEF estimates a shortage of 36,000 classrooms in Malawi which would take 70 years to build using conventional methods. According to 14Trees, this infrastructure gap could be bridged in just ten years using 3D printing. Partnering with a range of NGOs, 14Trees is committed to solving this chronic shortage at scale, starting with families and communities most in need. The project in Malawi relied on local 14Trees teams trained by LafargeHolcim and COBOD, the 3D printing specialists. The teams included 3D machine operators, architects, civil and structural engineers and materials specialists. The project also involved nearly forty people in the preparation of the 3D ink and in the construction with building trades such as carpenters, roofers and painters. The walls of 14Trees’ first prototype house were built in Lilongwe in just 12 hours, compared to almost 4 days using conventional methods. The walls of its first school, built in Salima, were printed in just 18 hours, as opposed to several days.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nib Solution Updates IT Shades Engage & Enable POSCO (South Korea) to Establish Hydrogen Production Capacity of 5 Million Tons For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 8 Solution Description POSCO presented a blueprint on how to become a “green hydrogen company that leads the hydrogen economy” and pioneer decarbonization. To materialize this vision, POSCO will establish a hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons by 2050 and achieve 30 trillion KRW in hydrogen sales. In specific, POSCO will focalize on equipping itself with production capabilities and core technologies, including technology to produce hydrogen by electrolyzing water and technology to extract hydrogen by 2030, and nurture the hydrogen business as the group’s growth engine to take the lead in the future hydrogen market. The annual domestic demand for hydrogen, the next-generation source of clean energy, is expected to increase to 1.94 million tons in 2030 and over 5.26 million tons in 2040. The field of application will also expand from the current petrochemical industry to transport and power generation areas. Accordingly, the Korean government has launched the Hydrogen Economy Committee and declared the Green New Deal policy to promote the transition to a hydrogen economy. Currently, POSCO possesses an annual hydrogen production capacity reaching 7,000 tons, utilizing the Cokes Oven Gas during the steelmaking process and natural gas (LNG). Among them, around 3,500 tons of byproduct hydrogen are extracted and used to control temperature and prevent oxidation while steelmaking. Also, POSCO is furnished with capabilities necessary for producing and applying hydrogen, such as developing the world’s first steel products for hydrogen fuel cell separators and supplying them to domestic hydrogen carmakers.

The law requires businesses to buy licences for the packaging they use, and with costs expected to increase by up to 30% in 2021, this has led to a greater responsibility being placed on businesses to increase their recycling rates. Additionally, failure to comply can result in significant fines. Recycling Dual organises the collection, sorting and recycling of sales packaging for businesses across Germany ensuring strict recycling quotas are met. As part of the service, Recycling Dual works in collaboration with numerous stakeholders including local municipalities and waste management companies.

A mobile application has been available since the end of 2019 for conveniently and efficiently registering safety violations. The main task of the BBS audits is to conduct a behavioural safety audit to reduce the risk of an accident. The app's functions include recording dangerous behaviour or violations of labour protection requirements (with the option to take a photo), identifying the root causes of hazardous activity and collecting suggestions from employees to ensure their work is performed safely. Also, to prevent dangerous activity, it is possible to register the audit results before a safety violation has occurred. Currently, both the web version and the mobile version of the application developed by MMK-Informservice have been put into commercial operation. The app is available for all structural divisions of the plant., it is also being used in other MMK Group subsidiaries, introducing the procedure for conducting and registering BBS audits. United Service Company also plans to connect users to the app by the end of the year. At present, the app has the ability to record safety violations not only by the personnel of its division, but also by employees of other MMK Group divisions and subsidiaries. The app was highly rated by middle-level managers in production departments, for whom it is important to have modern technical tools that can quickly register the results of the BBS audit, allowing for a rapid response to unsafe employee behaviour. Environment & Social IT Shades Engage & Enable POSCO (South Korea) Pledges to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 And Lead Low Carbon Society For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 38 POSCO has vowed to become “Carbon Neutral” by 2050. As of recent, climate change has emerged as the greatest challenge for humanity, and POSCO’s commitment to leading carbon neutrality is an especially meaningful one, considering the nature of the steel industry where the emission of CO2 is inevitable. It is the first time for an Asian steelmaker with large-scale blast furnace operating systems (among Korea, China, and Japan) to officially declare a carbon-neutral plan. POSCO plans to utilize carbon risk as an opportunity, overcoming its inevitable need for CO2 emission. Through innovative technologies, such as CCUS(Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage), and hydrogen-based steelmaking, POSCO aims to equip itself with ‘low carbon competitiveness’ which enables providing ‘green steel’. As being the representative manufacturer of South Korea, POSCO’s ambition to be carbon neutral demonstrates its determination to play a leading role in line with the Korean government’s policy of achieving “2050 carbon neutrality” and implementing the “Green New Deal”. In addition to this, POSCO has been making its climate-related data available to the public. Following its support for the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) for the first time in the domestic manufacturing industry in March, POSCO issued “POSCO’s Dialogue for Climate Action,” which includes the TCFD’s recommendations, along with its declaration of carbon neutrality. The report discusses POSCO’s plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in the short-term (by 2030) and 50% in the mid-term (by 2040) with a target to attain net zero emissions by 2050. An analysis of climate scenarios highlighted in the TCFD recommendations was also included in this issue. Description
  • 49. Environment & Social IT Shades Engage & Enable Severstal (Russia) completes construction of environmental facilities for a new blast furnace For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 39 PAO Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has completed the construction of environmental facilities for blast furnace No. 3. The modernization of blast furnace No. 3 will mitigate the environmental impact of pig iron production throughout the production chain through use of the best available technologies. The main environmental advantage of the dust and gas capture facilities is the aspiration system and gas cleaning system. The aspiration system cleans the air from the dust of workplaces and technological operations. The gas cleaning system cleans the blast furnace gas. The main operational activities during which pollutants are released into the atmosphere from blast furnace No. 3 are the preparation and dosing of charge materials, loading the charge into blast furnaces, and operating the casthouse. By covering dust and gas formation sites, the aspiration suction system, featuring control and shut-off valves, extracts contaminated air and gas for cleaning. The aspiration valves are automatic. The process is organized from the places of discharge of cast iron and slag, using a skimmer and side suction from the tap holes, which are covered. As the release of fusion products is carried out simultaneously from just one tap hole, suction is cut off from the other notches. The operating mode of the valves is synchronized with that of the casting equipment. To prevent emissions of pollutants when loading materials into the furnace (through a coneless loading device), emissions from the loading device are suppressed using compressed nitrogen, which is used to blow dirty gas from the blast furnace under the furnace top. Dusty air from the intake chamber of the coneless loading device will be directed to the collector at the new central exhaust station (CVS). Cleaning the aspiration air from dust will be carried out by bag filters. The filter consists of 1056 hoses, each 10m long. The particular bag filters procured by Severstal are characterized by their compactness and large filtration area, which enables them to work effectively in cramped conditions. Description

It is the company’s oldest production facility to date. Its shutdown is part of Nornickel’s comprehensive environmental programme, which aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact at all production sites. With the closure of the shop, hazardous emissions into the atmosphere at the Russia’s Norwegian border will cease. The decision to close the smelting facility was made by Nornickel in November 2019. The closure will completely eliminate sulphur dioxide emissions in the cross-border area with Norway. Due to the implementation of the programme, it is planned to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions at Kola MMC by 50% in 2020 and by 85% by 2021. After the shutdown, the customer service and the clean-up service will continue to operate in the shop. Within a year after the shutdown, the shop’s building will be prepared for mothballing: it will be cleaned, materials containing non-ferrous metals will be collected and sent for recycling. The industrial site may be preserved if an option for its use can be found. Nornickel supported a competition among investors willing to implement an industrial or cultural business project at the vacated smelter site. Its prerequisite was the ecological transformation of the industrial zone, the creation of green production facilities and new jobs. The winning project was the establishment of a metallurgical mini-mill for the production of grinding balls and long products (LLC Sirius). Nornickel plans to support the winner’s project in the form of advisory assistance, commitments to repurchase part of the products, provide preferential terms and reduced tariffs for material and technical resources, etc. Description
