n engineering manager, D.S. Harder, from the Ford
AMotor Company, coined the term Automation in
1946. He wanted to describe it as the concept
where automatic devices and controls were increasingly
used in mechanized production lines. The term itself is
inspired by the word Automatic.
From there on, the term automation is widely used in a
manufacturing context. However, coming into the present,
its usage, scope, and applications outside manufacturing are
widening. It is applied to a variety of systems where there is
a significant replacement for human effort and intelligence
by mechanical, electrical, or computerized actions.
In simple terms, automation can be defined as a technology
in which a process is performed by pre-programmed
commands blended with an automatic feedback control
loop so that the instructions are correctly executed. The
resulting system operates like us without any human
intervention.

computer-related technologies. Today, thanks to
digitalization, automated systems are increasingly

outcome is limited to the machine/process area
Ÿ The challenges were upskilling resources on
standards/specifications and varied application
domains, deriving scope boundaries, and
monetising on services.
Ÿ New age industrial requirements involve solutions
that comply with a 360-degree view, including
operational and business functional levels, involve
multi-stakeholders defining requirements, and
multi-skill levels to design, validate, deploy
conceptual solution framework and manage the
project life cycle in a unified manner.
Ÿ Challenges are making the scope boundaries and
estimation as no consolidated view is obtainable in
the project initiation stage.
Ÿ Retaining resources and managing timelines and
costs during implementation phases.
Ÿ Change requests are inevitable and always a

Being an experienced leader, share your opinion on how
automation technology is being deployed currently and
what advancements can we expect in the future?
Ÿ The automation technology has been perceived in
two different aspects.
Ÿ Control automation – dealing with control system
sensors and actuators.
Ÿ Factory automation infrastructure – dealing with
bespoke designed electromechanical system IT-
enabled.
Ÿ Both the versions are evolving in terms of
becoming physically smaller footprints, powerful
and efficient, built-in with data capability with
respective vendors OEMs.
Ÿ The control strategy OT is predominantly driven on
specification-based where the requirement and
expectations are presently getting matured to pursue
on application/process specific outcome-based.
Ÿ Automation Infrastructure-driven based on overall
budgets to performance designs and need to be
based. Where it is no longer a luxury item.
What would be your advice to the aspirants who are
willing to venture into the field of automation services?
Understanding the market space:
The automation space is covered by System Integrators
/Machine builder OEM. Any business to start with the
purpose will have two aspects.
Ÿ To Make consistent revenue with decent profits.
Ÿ To be customer-centric to create win-win
opportunities and build a unique brand.
This Business space is Defined System Integration, and the
operators are system integrators. As the name specifies, they
conduct a function of integrating multiple technology
products of technology OEM (Partner suppliers) through
their services and make their value propositions to their
customers.
Possible customer profiles of typical system integrators
(Automation)
Ÿ End-user customer B2C – Typically, the industrial
operator produces various products.
Ÿ Possible opportunities for the system integrators and
automation builders are upgrading legacy systems,
expanding automation systems, and integration for
better interoperability and visibility across the
operational area.
Ÿ OEM/EPC – Machine builder – Typically has core
expertise on the specific operable processes for
industrial operations
Ÿ Possible opportunities for the System integrators are
building industrial control and visual applications for
their built physical machinery as appropriate to their
customer needs applicable.

Keep the primary fact that typically the system integration
as a business entity, on size and category, is sandwiched
between suppliers and Customers, who are two major
forces (as per Porter's Five force law), while trying to
achieve two aspects cited above as core purpose.
Strategic Revenue Stream building
Market Space:
It is imperative to find out your core expertise and the
possible sweet spot that needs to be built over a period of
time, marketable, which can be evolved by understanding
the figure explained above.
The strategy can have a choice of building industry vertical-
specific application/s covering various process areas within
one specific industry (domain) or Process specific
applications addressing multiple industries through the
proven reusable track on the application expertise, which
can define a serviceable market.
Incrementally adding new industry vertical domain and/or
specific application expertise can help move the sweet spot
diagonally, expanding the adjacency to realise sustainable

Growth in Turbulent Times" by Chris Zook and James
Allen.

Every industrial revolution was led by the
necessity to grow the production output

markets. In today’s market, the customers are

revolution, the most recent one, began with rapid progress
in the prevailing technologies with the focus on end-to-end
automation and smart systems, including 3D printing,
Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Cloud
Computing, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
Internet Of Things (IoT) respectively.
It focuses on automation with data processing in
manufacturing technologies and processes, including (CPS)
Cyber-Physical Systems, AI, Business Intelligence, Cloud
Computing, IoT, Industrial IoT, cognitive computing, and
Industrial Internet.
Smart Integrations
CPS transform the interaction with engineered systems.
These integrate sensing, computation, control and
networking into physical objects and infrastructure,
connecting them to the internet and with each other.
These developments hold the potential to reshape our world
with more responsive, precise, reliable and efficient
systems, enabling a revolution of smart devices and
systems, from smart cars to smart grids.
In the field of transportation and energy projects, a dynamic
future of make-believe where people may travel in
automatic GPS guided self-driving cars that communicate
securely and seamlessly in a secure and synchronized
platform with each other on smart roads. Drones will check
the infrastructure for damages and provide Wi-Fi service in
disaster-struck areas.
Progressive Intelligence
The AI algorithms monitor the process and parallelly record
the work patterns. They decipher the choices made by the
user for a particular work stage. Then they compile the
recorded data to form analytical reports of the process and
user.
It also creates an ideal work level where the perceived
results can be achieved through the right and timely
decisions. AI systems can assist in performance assessment,
result forecasting and suggesting the corrective actions
deficient in the analysis.
Computing the Silver LiningThe seamless application of
computer hardware and software towards delivering a
particular service through the internet. Smartphones, Gmail,
Microsoft outlook etc., are some of the many cloud-based
services. In Industry 4.0, several applications of cloud
computing benefit companies with collaborative supply
chains. The company management can make better
decisions due to the real-time visibility of centralized
information by multiple parties along the supply chain. In
case of any problem, the teams can easily respond to ensure
and trigger the efficacy in reducing the risk of repeating the
challenges. Cloud computing has an impressive 85%
preference from the manufacturers in implementing
Industry 4.0 technologies.
The IoT leverages cloud computing fundamentally for
altering shipping and logistics, removing different person-
to-person procedures, and replacing them with machine-to-
device intercommunication. This is also known as the
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Fleet management is more accessible with cloud computing
infrastructure and other Industry 4.0 technology such as
location tracking. Look no further than the advanced
telemetry that empowers manufacturers and retailers to
track single items in their supply chain (using location
tracking) as they manage the whole supply chain in real-
time.

The modern customized system integrates and links the
industrial infrastructure with big data, analytical tools,
wireless networks, and cloud computing. It also works on
the meta-level of networking operations till the distribution
system. In short, it is the internet of things designed for
industrial applications. The systematic synchronization

What are the initial challenges after
venturing into the field of
automation and what are the
challenges now?
The initial challenges related to the
development of the hardware and
software technologies in the rapidly
evolving field of IoT. The available
base of experienced engineers and
scientists in this field was limited in
India and therefore it was a constant
challenge to innovate these products.
The challenges now relate more to
ensuring that supply chain and product
quality is steady and managing the
ongoing disruptions being felt due to
product shortages, transport
restrictions, unavailability of many
products and components locally
within India, changing rules for
imports and much more. All this while
trying to maintain the timelines and
quality of our products and solutions
that are committed to our customers.
Being an experienced leader, share
with us your opinion on how
automation technology is being
deployed currently, and what
advancements can we expect in the
future?
The smart home space in India is
growing at a rapid rate, and this can be
attributed to affordability and better
availability of such products. Typical
offerings of a smart home space consist
of control devices and sensing devices.
Control devices usually provide access
to lighting, AC, fans, locks, water
heaters, and plug points remotely.
Sensing devices are usually intended to
sense smoke, gas leaks, door or
window intrusion, or motion. Smart
appliances that are just emerging also
allow control of the operation of
certain types of appliances remotely.
The emerging area of Voice Assistants
is an added user interface in addition to
smart apps. Cloud servers that connect
to the automation often play a vital
role, because they serve as the silent
sentinels in the cloud that operate to
perform a pre-determined task such as
operating devices on pre-defined
schedules or to reach when certain
events take place (e.g., to sound an
alarm or to turn on the lights if the
door intrusion sensor is triggered).
On the Smart App front, users are
looking to go beyond the list of devices
and seeking more interesting
360degree panoramic room views in
which the device controls or monitors
are placed, as they are more intuitive
and more appealing to use.
Future evolutions will revolve around
the integration of AI and Machine
Learning to enhance the automation to
be more aligned with the daily needs of
the users and in some cases even
anticipate the needs based on past
behaviours.
What would be your advice to the
aspirants who are willing to venture
into the field of automation services?
We would encourage them to enter the
field of automation as the opportunities
to improve many of our daily activities
and processes are immense. There are
considerable opportunities for
automation both via software and
hardware development. They should
also be cautioned that developing
hardware is much more challenging
than software as there are many aspects
of the infrastructure in India that make
the design, procurement, and delivery
of a physical product much more
challenging than say software. That
said, for those interested, it is still a
rewarding experience and journey to
engage.

Changing
n the early 1900, the first level of
Iappliances was introduced,
including vacuum cleaners,
washing machines, clothes dryers,
refrigerators, and electric dishwashers.
Research in home automation
technologies began in 1930, but the
results were seen in 1966.
Echo IV, the first automation system,
helped compute the shopping lists,
control the home temperature and turn
appliances on and off. 1969 saw the
invention of the kitchen computer that
made recipes but didn’t work due to its
heavy price.
The development of the
microcontroller in 1971 resulted in
price reduction making the technology
accessible. In 1991 the concept of
Gerontechnology was developed to
make the lives of senior citizens easier.
The year 2000 saw the technology
developing with combination functions
with versatile appliances. Home
networking, domestic technologies and
various other consumer gadgets
became available.
Smart home automation is commonly
seen today began in this era.
Consumers can now control the
heating, TVs, lights, doors and alarms
via remote controllers and
smartphones.
Home Automation
Home automation has grown much
ahead from the stage of being
connected to the internet to a self-
operating ‘smart’ system. Considering
the basic functional appliances in a
modern home, including security, air
conditioners, coolers, fans, lights,
music systems, smart TVs, water
heaters, etc., are all integrated into a
self-managing system of the AI.
Automations

The system records our operating
patterns, including usage time,
frequency, temperature settings,
selected music numbers, and sleeping
patterns.
The system creates a discipline of
operations, thereby reducing human
intervention. The camera scans the car
and raises the boom barrier as you
enter the main entrance.
The home entrance door scans your
face to open the door. Immediately the
lights and the air conditioner are
switched on. The motion sensor
equipped signals the system for
activating the appliances.
At night the sensors check the time
and, automatically dim the lights, play
light instrumental music or sounds of
nature. Mornings begin with melodious
music, with the temperatures warming
up slowly.
Seamless Communication and
eCommerce
The recent pandemic led to the
phenomenal growth of the leading
technology: remote communication,
remote counselling, video seminars,
remote training, and education.
The second are net banking, online
transactions, and the surge in the
eCommerce industry.
Self-diagnosing devices
Smart refrigerators that use computer
vision integrated with machine
learning algorithms help identify the
food articles stored. It gives a message
on foods that need to be consumed on
priority and which other food items
need to be ordered.
Furthermore, it sends a message on the
users’ phones to track their location,
reminding them to procure the listed
food items. This is managed through
the GPS tracking system synchronised
with IoT and home automation.
Smart security has the proper
amalgamation of IoT and home
automation. The motion sensors are
equipped with face recognition
biometric access control technology to
recognise the residents, their relatives,
or friends quickly.
Technology application in video door
communication (sensor-based bells,
video callers) for better control over
the visitors.
IoT Based Systems
In-house health monitoring systems
involve smart testing equipment and
wearable technology to check the
activity levels, sleep quality and diet
intake. These are helpful to older adults
or patients recovering from severe
health conditions.
The application of technologies
changes the world of sports telecasted
in three-dimensional views, animated
reviews, 360-degree analysis, and
multi-level moving remote-controlled
sensor-equipped cameras, giving the
experts and viewers a more realistic
and active feel of the sporting events.
Reliable Application of Robots
The involvement of AI-based robots in
virtual assistance functions like
gardening, cleaning, cooking, teaching,
and giving company has elevated the
technological finesse.
Robots applied in specific surgical
procedures worked with greater
accuracy, reliability and efficiency.
Complex surgeries like knee
replacement, orthopaedic procedures
etc., are made much more effectively.
IoT Empowering Smart Greener
Homes
IoT has increased the efficiency of
modern homes through its deep and
well-knit integration of all appliances
and systems working on senor based
operations. These systems detect the
human presence or absence and
quickly switch off the devices.
As a result, ‘forgetting to switch off’
errors are eliminated. The systems also
measure the atmospheric temperature
and climate to give some to-be-
incorporated suggestions. For example,
four-to-six plants can help increase the
oxygen source and cool the air in
particular areas.
Versatile Integration
The combination of multiple
technologies like AI, GPS, Robotics
and IoT has led to the wide use of
drones in numerous applications of
surveys, surveillance, mapping,
research, and delivery functions.
The role in the distribution and product
deposition in agriculture has helped
speed up the process of the plantation,
fertiliser application and uniform
spraying of pesticides. Tree plantation

What was the inspiration behind

• Finding the Right Talent: The
biggest asset for any organization
is its human resource. Finding the
right talents who can share the
same passion and nurture them to
prepare for future roles is also
equally important for
organizational success.
• Support from Various
Government Departments: The
government is showing some
positive inclination towards
encouraging start-ups. A lot more
can be done, but by the end of the
day, if an entrepreneur believes
and conceives that he wants to
succeed, whether the government
is pro-startups or not, he will
succeed. Governments can help
create ecosystems; entrepreneurs
need to build their vision
themselves.
• Know how money flows: The
core team of Robolab consists of
mostly Engineers. So, it took us
some strenuous efforts to
understand how the money flows.
Knowing the regular profit and
loss statement of the business is
not enough.
Being an experienced leader, share
with us your opinion on how
automation technology is being
deployed currently, and what
advancements can we expect in the
future?
The ever-increasing demand for
automation creates opportunities for
businesses and the economy. Industries
across diverse sectors, from
manufacturing to banking to
healthcare, are adopting automation
technologies to drive productivity,
safety, profitability, and quality. In the
near future, we can expect automation
technologies to reach households.
What would be your advice to the
aspirants willing to venture into the
automation niche?
Being a start-up leader requires you to
wear multiple hats. You need to have
functional as well as execution
knowledge. You must be adaptable
according to the needs of the
organization. Also need to have the
ability to observe and analyse the
situation from a different perspective.
As famously quoted by Bruce Lee-
“You must be shapeless, formless, like
water. When you pour water into a cup,
it becomes the cup. When you pour
water into a bottle, it becomes the
bottle. When you pour water into a
teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water
can drip, and it can crash. Become like
water, my friend.”
This sums up the mindset a start-up
founder needs to have.
