hope.
Hope in the form of ZorbaCare Rehabilitation
Centre–one of India's leading Luxury Deaddiction centres.
Optimism in the kind of Siddharth Jhaveri– the Founder
and CBT/DBT specialist.
And solid evidence is in the way of the best testimonial
received by ZorbaCare. An English class essay that won the
top prize for Akshay Pagare, Professor, Royal English, 1A,
9/10/2019. The essay titled ‘Second Chances’ says it all.
Akshay: “My hands trembled, fumbling with the laces as I
tried to tie my shoes. I struggled to get to my feet and
looked over at my friend Blake. His dark, dreary eyes met
mine for a second, and then both of us looked away,
acknowledging the agony we felt while, deep down,
realizing that it was what our lives had become. I glanced
through the window in the room. To most people, the sight
would have been pleasant. Sunlight had begun to trickle
through the tall redwood trees. Little swallows chirped their
morning song. And the sky was slowly shifting to a light
blue colour. But through my eyes, the outside world looked
gloomy and grey, with a sense of impending doom.”- From
the essay, Second Chances.
According to Siddharth, ZorbaCare offers evidence-based
holistic treatment for individuals suffering from alcohol,
drug or behavioural addictions. Treatment is voluntary, and
treatment plans are completely customized according to the
client's issues, needs and goals. It is the core belief that
every person has a right to be provided with a safe and
supportive environment and an array of mental health
resources, and there is no "one size fits all" regarding
recovery from mental health issues. This focus on treating
each unique individual and not just the illness sets Zorba
apart and helps clients and their families achieve a fulfilling
quality of life and well-being.
Akshay: “I didn't want to think about my day. I turned to a
wooden desk cluttered with unfinished artwork next to
Blake’s bed, desperately searching for the bag or any trace
of the substance that had kept us up all night. “There’s none
left. I already checked,” Blake said in a defeated tone as he
hastily packed a water pipe, “Just hit this.
You'll feel better.” I grabbed it from his pale hands,
knowing it wouldn't make things much better. But at least it
meant I could eat. After I was high enough to function a
little, I stumbled out of his room and into the bathroom.” –
From the essay, Second Chances.
We Care
At ZorbaCare, there is a focus on psychological
intervention and only need-based pharmacological
intervention to treat the clients. In-house experts are trained
in various therapeutic approaches, allowing them to design
a step-by-step recovery plan for the clients. The aim is to
combine traditional scientific treatment with new-age
therapy techniques, integrating the old and new. Therapies
that are commonly used are:
Ÿ Cognitive Behavioural therapy
Ÿ Motivational enhancement therapy
Ÿ Acceptance and Commitment therapy
Ÿ Twelve-step approach
Ÿ Trauma-informed therapy
Ÿ Interpersonal and Family therapy
Ÿ Mindfulness-based Cognitive behaviour therapy
Ÿ Dialectical behaviour therapy
Ÿ Rational Emotive behaviour therapy
Ÿ Hypnotherapy
This mix of holistic treatment methods, when uniquely
combined as per a client’s needs, leads to the creation of a
reflective state. This leads to the removal of ingrained
attitudes and replacement with healthy, socially acceptable
behaviours. Zorba was the first to try the implementation of
multiple models of therapy at the same time, which now has
become usual in higher-end rehabs.
Akshay: “In the mirror above the basin, I saw the same
person I’ve seen every Saturday morning of every week for
the past year. He had dark brown skin, and his shiny black
hair was a jungle. His eyes were droopy and red. The white
outfit he wore was covered with dirt stains. His shirt collar
was stretched from a fight he had the night before. His face
hung in shame as he stared at the dried blood caked on his
upper lips, trailing out of his nose. This man was the same
person the week before that reassured me that this same
situation wouldn't happen again. As I washed my face and
walked out of the house, I wondered how it was going to all
end. A familiar creeping anxiety overcame me again. As I
clutched my heart; feeling as if someone slowly slid a knife
through it.
Months went by, and I was getting worse. Hope was lost.” –
From the essay, Second Chances.

We Believe in You
Akshay: “I no longer told myself that things would change;
I couldn't remember how it even started. As another night
ended, I stepped out of Blake’s jeep and walked into my
two-story countryside house. I had no words to reassure my
mother as she opened the door to my knocking. No more
excuses about why I was showing up home at three in the
morning. “It’s okay, mom. I’m fine, just leave me alone,” I
said to her worried face, feeling nothing at all for her as I
shuffled up the stairs and closed my room door behind me.
Pain set in as the high wore off, as if I had reached the peak
of my rollercoaster ride, and it began to plummet straight
into hell. Shaking violently, I sat down by my bedside,
produced a handful of assorted anti-anxiety pills from my
white jean pocket, and in one swift movement, took them
all, instantly drifting into sleep. I prayed that the morning
would never come, an end to the horror movie that was my
life. I thought if maybe I had a second chance at life, things
would have been different, but it was an impossible fantasy.
The next morning, my eyes slowly opened. To my
unfortunate surprise, I had lived. I reached under my pillow
immediately for my vaporizer, put my lips to it and hit it
hard. My body won the battle through the night, but my soul
didn’t. My mattress and turquoise bed sheets were covered
with cold sweat. I felt lifeless, like a zombie. I groggily
peered around the room. My white, blue striped football
jersey hung on the wall, along with dusty baseball trophies
and frames for my accomplishments, including three years
in a row of first places for writing showcases and a diploma
for graduating high school at sixteen. I felt like such a
disappointment. All the wall was missing now was a death
certificate and a plaque for the worst drug addict alive, I
thought.”
According to Siddharth, a Sober Companion is the latest
trend in India and abroad for those whose profession, work,
Family background and wealth keep them in a lifestyle
where access to all sorts of substance abuse is easy, and the
temptation to relapse is always strong. Frankly, this is for
the wealthier class, who also need a reliable person who is
diplomatic and tactful and keeps the client’s needs
foremost.
15. It is a tough job as it entails 24/7 companionship with only
short periods off, and they are paid well for their efforts. A
sober companion, according to Siddharth, whose career
start began as one, is the lightning rod and buffer for the
client. “They have to keep the client free from their
predilections while being the buffer that protects from
others attempts to provide the client with the substance of
abuse,” says Siddharth, whose own journey began in his
20s by helping addicts as a sober companion became a
passion for the young man.
Akshay: “I jolted when my mother touched my arm. I didn't
notice her there the entire time. She was sitting on the blue
carpet next to the bed, tears pouring from her eyes. “Look
what you’re doing to yourself, Akshay,” she whispered in
sorrow. “I know, mom," I managed to say through my
parched lips. I actually didn't know. I really didn't want to
stop, either. I didn't know how to. But she knew. She asked,
“Do you want to keep on dying, or do you want to live?”
A week later, I stood in line, passport in hand, ready to
board a flight to Mumbai. I felt like my mom had hatched
the best idea ever. All I needed was a vacation, and I had
everything I needed. I passed out before the plane took off,
conformably content: there was a stash of weed in my
luggage, and a week’s worth of Xanax supply in my pocket.”
– From the essay, Second Chances.
We Promise
In his search for himself, Siddharth explored different areas
of self-expression like theatre, meditation, business and
others. He found his calling in helping addicts find a new
joyful, and productive life. He has 15+ years of experience
in chemical dependency at various levels. He specializes in
working with young addicts and prefers evidence-based and
cognitive behaviour therapy.
Akshay: “Everything was a blur after that, until one
evening. I arrived at a tall tan bungalow with three floors in
a suburban area of Pune. It was surrounded by a red brick
wall, had a bright green freshly mowed front lawn and a
rose garden. My first thought was that I was visiting a
wealthy family friend of my mom’s. I went inside and sat in
a furnished living room in front of a casually dressed, light-
skinned man with a black beard. “Hello, Akshay. My name
is Siddharth. I heard you have a problem. Is that right?”
He asked in a light tone as he pushed his glasses up with
his index finger. I panicked; I realized I was in rehab. The
last place on earth I wanted to be. “I don't have a
problem,” I started to shout, “Mom, what the freak?
I don't belong here. I can stop on my own. I promise!”
A Mul -Modal
Approach and holis c
treatment mean that
ZorbaCare focuses on
various areas of
development.
16. Overwhelmed with anxiety, I left the room and went outside
to the street, where dogs started following me as I ran. I
realized how elaborate my Mother’s trap was. She made
sure I didn't have my wallet, kept my passport, and didn't let
me see my plane tickets, which ended up being a one-way
trip. I felt like running far away, but I was in the middle of
India. I had nowhere to go. I couldn't handle the pressure of
anxiety anymore. I stopped, took out the bag of pills and
looked at them. A sad, familiar song lyric came into my
mind. They told me they wouldn't hurt me. They told me not
to worry. But that’s what I get for talking to the pills…no
benefits.” – From the essay, Second Chances.
Since 2004, Siddharth has actively participated in
awareness programs for various NGOs and Anonymous
groups. He has extensively researched the subject and
refined his approach through interacting with several
addicts suffering from addictions and in recovery. In the
past decade, Siddharth has worked closely with them in
different stages of recovery. In this role, he has also been a
life coach to many. Cutting-edge research is the basis of the
program he practices with his clients in ZORBA.
Siddharth furthers that a sober companion helps you start
your new independent life. In some ways, they act as
training wheels, helping you stay on the straight and narrow
path of sobriety. But their help can also be more practical.
Siddharth has ably trained
people that comfortably fit
themselves into the lives of
their clients while being their
confidante – protectors ll the
client feels strong enough to
go it alone.
17. While recovery companions often are misconstrued as
glorified babysitters, it’s much more complex. They are an
effective combination of personal assistant, security guard
and counsellor in a friendly but not friends connection.
They keep the client in check, ensure they're up on time,
take their medications, hit the gym, and even sleep in the
same bedroom. They may also play the role of matchmaker,
vetting their clients’ supportive friends.
Akshay: “I stumbled back to the rehab and fainted on the
way inside, tears flowing down my face.” – From the essay,
Second Chances.
We Remain Humane
Being an experienced leader, sharing his opinion on how
adopting modern technologies like AI and ML impacts the
rehabilitation segment space and how Zonracare is adapting
to the change, Siddharth says that AI and ML seem to be the
future not only of industry but also rehabilitation from
addictions. But the way things are currently, the scenario
where one can go to a machine for help seems far off.
Besides, though a machine may be able to duplicate human
understanding, in therapy, the value of one human being
reaching out to another with understanding and empathy is
without parallel.
If progress is made, AI and ML could participate in the first
contact to evaluate the person, which could be correlated to
diagnose the severity of the problem. Such technology
would initially be cost-prohibitive except for governments
and corporate entities. Siddharth says their approach is to
wait, watch, and be prepared to incorporate it into their
treatment system.
Akshay: “Four months later, I came thundering down the
bungalow stairs in a yellow shirt, red shorts and flip-flops.
“Good morning Siddharth. Good morning Sandy. Hey
Raj. What's up, Rags!” I said with beaming enthusiasm. It
was another day in paradise. We all joined our hands and
prayed, “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we
cannot change, the courage to change the things we can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.” – From the
essay, Second Chances.
According to Siddharth, the biggest challenge faced by the
Rehabilitation world is the stigma associated with addiction
and the reticence of the families to own up to the reality of
having an addict amongst them. He adds, “This is a societal
problem, and we try to open up people to the idea that
mental illness is a combination of brain, belief and
behavioural dysfunction. We illuminate these things and try
to change mindsets through our counselling, blogs and
input sessions.”
Akshay: “Afterwards, I sat down with my legs crossed
outside under a palm tree with a hot cup of chai and lit a
cigarette. I only had one day left at the rehab. And I wished
that I could never leave. I thought about all that had
happened. All the incredible memories. Making friends from
all over India who were my age. Sneaking off at night,
buying weed from a street vendor and getting caught. Going
to the theatre every weekend and watching Bollywood
movies. Riding around on scooters and drinking freshly
made sugar cane juice. Smoking cigarettes at night on top
of a mountain looking at the twinkling city lights. Going on
road trips and singing along to Green Day.
Going to the gym every day and gaining thirty pounds of
muscle. Going out to clubs. Meeting a beautiful Indian girl
and eventually falling in love with her. I had the best
moments of my entire life! I realized how dumb I was to be
weeping and being hateful for weeks after my mom left me.
Thanks to her, my life now had meaning again.” – From the
essay, Second Chances.
We Are Your Sober Companion
In his advice to budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture
into the rehabilitation segment niche, Siddharth says that it
is a segment that needs a tremendous amount of integrity.
While operating expenses and profits need to be considered,
the more important issue is the lives of the addicts and their
families.
Follow all governmental norms and ensure that the
suffering addicts and their families are given humane
treatment and a well-thought-out program implemented
with non-judgmental love.
Akshay: “Painful memories come back into my head again
and again of when I was self-destructing. Being in juvenile
hall, in jail, getting kicked out of my house and school. And
worst of all, utterly demoralizing my soul. But I no longer
have to do any of that anymore. It’s a relief beyond
measure. The change I went through in the rehab was
astonishing. But I would have never wished that life of
using drugs upon anyone. I think of Blake a lot, and my
eyes always water. It’s been almost three months since he
overdosed and died in his bed. It could have easily been
me. I wipe my eyes and feel intensely grateful every day that
I have a second chance.” – From the essay, Second
Chances.

19. On envisioning scaling ZorbaCare’s operations and
offerings in the future, Siddharth lists,
Current plans envision
Ÿ Moving into a 20-bed facility with Gym, Swimming
Pool, Meditation Gazebos, multiple Counselling rooms
etc., to provide a complete in-house experience. "This
will be our flagship centre, corporate office, and the
training centre for staff that will handle our other centres
across India," says Siddharth.
Ÿ Expansion into major metros of Chennai, Bangalore,
Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad, as also smaller cities
like Nagpur, Nasik, Darjeeling, Mussouri, and
Chandigarh. These cities are known to have a fairly
large number of people with Substance Abuse Disorder.
Siddharth adds, "Having our centres closer to home
provides addicts in these cities with a treatment plan
based on WILLINGNESS AND MOTIVATION Rather
than coercion and much closer for the families to be
involved in counselling too."
Ÿ Providing a sober companion service post-treatment.
Sober companions, also called recovery companions,
are trained to help individuals become more productive,
healthy and positive members of society and maintain
sobriety. They can provide a “safe landing” once a
treatment program is completed and/or accountability in
difficult situations after treatment.
ZorbaCare is a rehab that began by its Founder, Siddharth
who has ably trained people that comfortably fit themselves
into the lives of their clients while being their confidantes –
protectors till the client feels strong enough to go it alone.

Destination Therapy: A New Approach to Individualized
High Intensity Focused Plans
According to Siddharth, ‘Destination Therapy’ is a
relatively new approach to healthcare that seeks to provide
individualized attention and high-intensity focused plans to
patients. This approach is characterized by the use of
advanced technologies and techniques that help doctors and
healthcare professionals create tailored treatment plans that
are specific to each patient's needs.
The goal of destination therapy is to provide patients with
the highest quality of care possible, while also ensuring that
their treatment plans are efficient, effective, and
personalized. This approach is particularly useful for
patients who are dealing with chronic or complex medical
conditions, as it allows doctors to focus on the specific
needs of each patient and provide targeted treatments that
are designed to achieve the best possible outcomes.
At the heart of destination therapy is the concept of
individualized attention. Instead of treating patients as a
collective group, doctors and healthcare professionals take
the time to get to know each patient on a personal level.
They use advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to
identify the underlying causes of each patient's medical
condition, and then develop customized treatment plans that
are tailored to address those specific issues.
Another key aspect of destination therapy is high-intensity
focused plans. These plans are designed to provide patients
with intensive treatments that are focused on achieving
optimal results. They may include a combination of
medications, therapies, and other treatments that are
specifically designed to address each patient's unique
medical needs.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of destination therapy is
the use of advanced technologies and techniques that are
helping to revolutionize the way that doctors and healthcare
professionals approach treatment. These technologies
include things like precision medicine, which uses genetic
testing and other advanced diagnostic tools to identify the
specific genetic factors that may be contributing to a
patient's medical condition.
Overall, destination therapy represents a new frontier in
healthcare that is focused on providing patients with the
individualized attention and high-intensity focused plans
that they need to achieve optimal health outcomes.
“Whether you are dealing with a chronic medical condition
or simply looking to improve your overall health and well-
being, this approach could be just what you need to achieve
your goals,” concludes Siddharth.

he healthcare sector is undergoing a revolutionary transfor-
Tmation driven by rapid technological advancements. From
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning to
robotics, virtual reality, and precision medicine, cutting-edge
technologies are reshaping the way medical treatments are
administered and improving patient outcomes.
In healthcare, the convergence of cutting-edge technologies with
medical science has unleashed a new era of possibilities, transform-
ing how treatments are administered and the outcomes they
achieve. The impact of advanced technologies in the healthcare
sector has been nothing short of revolutionary, revolutionizing the
patient experience and significantly enhancing the efficacy of
treatments. From personalized medicine fuelled by genetic insights
to the powerful integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual
reality, and telemedicine, these innovations are reshaping the
landscape of modern medicine and driving the pursuit of better
patient outcomes.
Gone are the days of traditional one-size-fits-all approaches to
treatments. Today, the healthcare sector stands at the forefront of a
technological revolution that leverages the uniqueness of each
patient to create tailor-made interventions. This dynamic shift is
facilitated by precision medicine, where therapies are customized to
individual characteristics such as genetic makeup, lifestyle, and
environmental factors. The amalgamation of genomics and
bioinformatics empowers clinicians with unprecedented knowl-
edge, enabling targeted treatments that minimize side effects while
maximizing therapeutic benefits.
Precision Medicine: Unleashing Personalized
Treatment Strategies
One of the most promising advancements in
healthcare is precision medicine. This approach
tailors medical decisions and treatments to individ-
ual characteristics such as genetics, lifestyle, and
environment. With the help of advanced genomic
sequencing and bioinformatics, clinicians can now
identify specific biomarkers and genetic mutations
that contribute to diseases. This personalized
insight empowers physicians to prescribe targeted
therapies, minimizing adverse effects and
maximizing treatment efficacy. Precision medicine
has already demonstrated significant success in
cancer treatments, where therapies are designed to
target the unique genetic mutations of a patient's
tumour.
AI and Machine Learning: Optimizing
Diagnoses and Treatment Plans
Artificial intelligence and machine learning
transform how medical data is analyzed and
interpreted. AI algorithms can quickly process vast
amounts of patient information, including medical
records, imaging data, and research papers, to
provide physicians with more accurate diagnoses
and treatment recommendations. These technolo-
gies can identify patterns and predict disease
progression, helping clinicians make well-informed
decisions and devise more effective treatment plans.
Additionally, AI-powered robotic systems are used
in surgeries, offering precision and reducing the risk
of human errors.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
further bolstered the efficacy of treatments in
previously unimaginable ways. These powerful
technologies can process vast quantities of patient
data, medical literature, and imaging information,
leading to faster and more accurate diagnoses.
Clinicians are now equipped with AI-driven
decision support systems, assisting them in devising
optimized treatment plans and predicting patient
outcomes with greater accuracy.
Robotics: Revolutionizing Surgery and
Rehabilitation
Robotic technology has significantly improved
surgical procedures, particularly in delicate and
24. complex operations. Surgical robots enable surgeons to
perform procedures with enhanced agility, precision, and
control, reducing complications, shorter hospital stays, and
faster patient recovery times. Moreover, exoskeletons and
assistive robots are employed in rehabilitation therapies,
helping patients regain mobility and functionality after
injuries or strokes. These advancements are revolutionizing
healthcare's surgical and rehabilitative aspects, ultimately
leading to better treatment outcomes.
Robotics has introduced a paradigm shift in surgical
procedures, elevating precision and safety to unprecedented
heights. Surgeons can now leverage robotic systems to
perform intricate operations with unparalleled dexterity,
reducing the risks associated with human error and ensuring
minimal invasiveness. The integration of robotics in
rehabilitation settings is equally transformative, with
exoskeletons and assistive robots helping patients regain
mobility and independence after debilitating injuries or
neurological conditions.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR):
Enhancing Patient Engagement and Therapies
Virtual and augmented reality have diverse applications in
healthcare, from patient engagement to therapeutic
interventions. These immersive technologies can educate
patients about their medical conditions, making compre-
hending complex treatment plans and actively participating
in their care easier. Furthermore, VR-based therapies
manage pain, anxiety, and phobias. In rehabilitation
settings, virtual reality simulations offer real-life scenarios
for patients to practice motor skills and cognitive exercises,
accelerating their recovery process.
Telemedicine and Remote Monitoring: Improving
Access and Continuity of Care
Telemedicine has emerged as a game-changer in healthcare,
especially in remote or underserved areas. Advanced
telecommunication technologies allow patients to consult
with healthcare professionals from the comfort of their
homes, reducing travel and wait times.
Moreover, remote monitoring devices enable continuous
tracking of vital signs and health parameters, empowering
physicians to detect early signs of deterioration and
intervene promptly. This proactive approach to patient care
enhances treatment effectiveness and reduces hospital
readmissions.
Integrating advanced technologies in the healthcare sector
is ushering in a new era of precision, efficiency, and patient-
centred care. From precision medicine and AI-powered
diagnostics to robotics, VR-based therapies, and
telemedicine, these innovations amplify treatments' effects
and drive improved health outcomes. As technology
evolves, the healthcare industry must embrace these
transformative changes to ensure that patients worldwide
can benefit from the full potential of advanced medical
technologies.

and demand aspects. On the supply side, Operation
Eyesight focuses on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and
resources. In contrast, on the demand side, it endeavours to
cultivate a sense of community ownership and engagement
in eye health initiatives.
Through its multifaceted approach, Operation Eyesight
strives to usher communities from the darkness of avoidable
blindness into the light of sight and empowerment. By
championing accessible eye healthcare and fostering
sustainable solutions, the organization embodies hope for
individuals and communities worldwide, heralding a future
where vision impairment is no longer a barrier to leading
healthy, fulfilling lives.
Why Choose OE Universal for Your Rehabilitation
Needs?
Fostering endless possibilities, Operation Eyesight
Universal encapsulates the unwavering commitment to
empower communities and hospitals alike to deliver quality
eye healthcare regardless of financial means.
Kashinath emphasizes the organization's dedication to
building the capacities of partner hospitals, ensuring they
have the resources and expertise to provide comprehensive
eye health services. By working hand in hand with
communities surrounding these hospitals, Operation
Eyesight harnesses local strengths and fosters a sense of
ownership over eye health initiatives.
One pivotal aspect of Operation Eyesight's community
outreach is the establishment of Vision Centres, which serve
as hubs for eye health screening, prescription eyeglasses
distribution, and specialist referrals.
These centres bring essential eye care services directly to
people's doorsteps, bridging the gap between healthcare
facilities and underserved populations. To ensure
inclusivity, the organization recruits and trains local
community health workers who conduct door-to-door eye
health screenings and referrals, particularly targeting
women and girls who often face systemic and cultural
barriers to accessing healthcare.
Beyond providing vital eye health services, these
community health workers serve as educators,
disseminating health-related information and promoting
community awareness. Through grassroots initiatives and
collaborative partnerships, Operation Eyesight eliminates
avoidable vision loss and fosters a culture of health
consciousness and empowerment. By nurturing local
capacities and leveraging community strengths, the
organization opens up endless possibilities for individuals
to enjoy a life of improved vision and well-being with:
Proven Track Record: Founded in 1963, OE Universal
boasts over 50 years of experience preventing blindness and
restoring sight. “We have served millions of individuals
across India, making a lasting impact on communities,”
says Kashinath.
Comprehensive Care: OE Universal goes beyond just
treating eye conditions. He adds that they provide holistic
rehabilitation services, including counselling, social
support, and low vision training, ensuring patients can fully
reintegrate into their lives.
Focus on Accessibility: Recognizing the challenges faced
by underserved communities, OE Universal operates a
network of over 31 partner hospitals and 114 vision centres,
reaching even the most remote areas.
Expertise and Quality: “Our dedicated team comprises
highly qualified ophthalmologists, optometrists, and
rehabilitation specialists, committed to providing patients
with the highest standard of care,” says Kashinath.
Sustainable Approach: OE Universal focuses on capacity
building, training local healthcare professionals, and
empowering communities to manage their own eye health
needs in the long term.
Visionary for the Voiceless
As a visionary for the voiceless, Kashinath has dedicated 14
years of his career to Operation Eyesight, leveraging over
three decades of progressive experience in providing
strategic leadership across various domains. With a
comprehensive understanding of the development and eye
health sectors at local, regional, national, and international
levels, Kashinath has spearheaded transformative initiatives
that have significantly expanded the organization's reach
and impact.
At Operation Eyesight, Kashinath championed the
Hospital-Based Community Eye Health approach. This
flagship strategy increased the organization's countries of
operation from four to eight and broadened the scope of eye
health projects undertaken. His leadership has fostered
partnerships with institutions and governments, positioning
Operation Eyesight as a trusted ally in the global fight
against avoidable blindness.

28. Viewing eye health care as an integral component of
holistic well-being, Kashinath's visionary leadership has
guided Operation Eyesight towards prioritizing
collaboration and partnership. This approach has enhanced
the organization's effectiveness and established it as a
beacon of hope for underserved communities worldwide.
More Than Just Rehabilitation: Besides his role at
Operation Eyesight, Kashinath serves on the Board of
Trustees for the International Agency for the Prevention of
Blindness (IAPB), where he continues to advocate for
equitable access to eye health services. His contributions to
the field of eye health have been recognized globally, with
IAPB honouring him as an Eye Health Leader in 2013, a
testament to his unwavering commitment to serving the
voiceless and marginalized.
Beyond rehabilitation, OE Universal actively addresses the
root causes of blindness in India. They engage in:
Community education: Raising awareness about eye
health and preventive measures to reduce the need for
treatment.
Advocacy: Collaborating with policymakers for better
access to quality eye care services nationwide.
Research and innovation: Exploring new technologies and
approaches to improve eye care delivery and outcomes.
Obliterating Obstacles
In providing affordable eye healthcare to the masses,
Kashinath acknowledges the multifaceted challenges
present in the current landscape. From cultural nuances to
geopolitical tensions and climate-related issues, ensuring
eye health for all is intricately intertwined with broader
issues such as poverty, education, gender equality, access to
clean water, and healthcare accessibility. Recognizing the
interconnectedness of these challenges, Kashinath
emphasizes the importance of collaboration and partnership
across agencies and sectors, echoing the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sentiments in
creating a more just and equitable world.
Accessibility, affordability, and local availability are
significant barriers for patients and families seeking eye
healthcare in India. Operation Eyesight trains local health
workers to conduct eye health screenings and provide
community-based health education to address these
challenges. Additionally, establishing local vision centres
and school-based eye health programs enables the
organization to reach a wider demographic, particularly
children, with screening services and specialist referrals
where necessary.
One of the ongoing hurdles non-profits like Operation
Eyesight face is securing funding for projects and
programs. The organization adopts a two-pronged approach
to tackle this challenge, forging partnerships with existing
hospitals that share project costs and integrating eye health
care within the broader healthcare system. Furthermore,
Operation Eyesight is actively pursuing fundraising
strategies within India and collaborating with generous
donors to sustain its mission.
As the landscape of eye health evolves, with emerging
trends such as increased cases of Retinopathy of
Prematurity, Operation Eyesight remains proactive in
addressing these challenges. By partnering with specialists
and centres of excellence, the organization endeavours to
stay at the forefront of innovation and adaptation, ensuring
that its efforts will impact eye health outcomes for
communities in need.
For the Holistic Social Development
Kashinath emphasizes the pivotal role of social
development initiatives and policies in fostering societies'
comprehensive growth and well-being. He believes eye
health, like other facets of public health, should be
integrated into broader developmental frameworks to
ensure equitable access to care for all individuals.
Despite progress in many areas, numerous countries
worldwide still lack comprehensive eye health strategies,
resulting in limited access to affordable and accessible
26 | January, 2024 | www.insightssuccess.in
29. vision care for millions of people. Kashinath underscores
the importance of addressing this gap through collaborative
efforts between governments, decision-makers, and health
institutions.
Recognizing the interconnected nature of development
issues, Kashinath highlights the profound impact of vision
health on various aspects of individuals' lives. From parents'
ability to support their families to children's educational
opportunities and senior citizens' participation in society,
healthy eyes play a crucial role in fostering socio-economic
well-being.
By advocating for eye health-friendly policies and
strategies at the governmental level, Operation Eyesight
aims to create sustainable solutions that address the root
causes of avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
Through partnerships and collective action, the organization
endeavours to fulfil its mission of ending blindness and
restoring sight, thereby contributing to the holistic social
development of communities worldwide.
Words for the Wise
In his guidance for emerging social entrepreneurs seeking
to enter the non-profit sector, Kashinath emphasizes the
growing prevalence of vision loss, with projections
indicating that approximately 90% of cases could be treated
or prevented. However, without significant global
investment, an alarming 1.76 billion individuals are
anticipated to experience some degree of vision impairment
by 2050.
This dual reality presents both a challenge and an
opportunity for aspiring social entrepreneurs. Kashinath
suggests that prospective individuals in this field consider
investing in digital technology to facilitate the delivery of
affordable eye care services to underserved regions.
Additionally, they could allocate resources to training eye
health professionals, ensuring a skilled workforce capable
of effectively addressing community needs.
Furthermore, Kashinath proposes the establishment of self-
sustaining eye clinics and hospitals that offer high-quality
services, catering to individuals who may not have the
means to cover their medical expenses. By embracing these
strategies, budding social entrepreneurs can play a vital role
in mitigating the impact of vision loss and advancing
equitable access to eye care services.
Vision Forever
Looking ahead, Kashinath reveals that a significant factor
contributing to Operation Eyesight’s success is the
scalability and replicability of its community-centred
model, extending not only across various communities but
also beyond borders. This progression has propelled them
from a modest fundraising organization rooted in a church
basement to a prominent figure in global eye health. In
India, this approach will facilitate the expansion of their
initiatives into more villages, states, and program areas.
Integrating eye health services into existing primary
healthcare systems is fundamental to their strategy in India,
alongside efforts to extend these endeavours into new
project domains.
Partnerships play a pivotal role in their endeavours, and the
future of expanding their work lies in diversifying
collaborations. This includes engaging with companies and
multinational corporations and forging national and global
alliances with like-minded organizations. This effort can be
reinforced by endorsing social impact enterprises, including
their partner, the Grow Fund, which is already active in
India.
Furthermore, enhancing non-monetary contributions to
projects, programs, and partners is essential for scaling their
initiatives. This involves intensifying their focus on
providing technical and program management support.
Lastly, there is a growing emphasis on investing in
research, documentation, and advocacy.
This initiative aims to cultivate a repository of research and
knowledge that informs their work and enriches the sector
as a whole.
Choosing Operation Eyesight Universal as your eye care
partner means supporting a dedicated organization that
goes beyond treatment. The team create a ripple effect of
hope and empowerment, transforming lives and building a
brighter future for individuals and communities across
India.

34. The Bombay Mothers and Children Welfare
Society is a century old organization that was
established with a real vision of the future by Dr.
Mhaskar and Dr. Tilak in 1919.
This organization had almost come to a shut down in 1985
when the present Jt. Hon Secretary and a full time
practicing Anesthesiologist at Bombay Hospital, Breach
Candy Hospital and Sportsmed Mumbai, Dr. Madhav
Sathe took over the reigns rather reluctantly.
In 1967 after the death of the founder, the downslide began.
Financial stability was eroded beyond repair. Bad labour
practices agitated workers a great deal. Court cases further
added to aggressive stance from both sides and organization
came to grinding halt, short of a shut down.
There was a group of like-minded individuals who thought
of reviving the trust. Dr. Sathe became a member. The
group was allowed to take reins of trust while the case was
pending in high court and then as a youngest member of the
group Dr. Sathe was thrusted to be secretary.
The idea of external financial support to start the revival of
the organization was not a feasible idea unless plans for
turn around and going forward sustainability were chalked
out. This drove him to seek change within the organization,
soon to realise that primarily and for the future, the
organization needed a THOUGHT PROCESS &
STRATEGIC POLICY for turning around the tide and
moving forward steadily.
1985 till date has been a journey, that he himself did not
imagine cause he went with the flow with only one thought
in mind, to revive the organization that was established by
stalwarts of that era, utilize its existing assets and ensure
that the employees then did not lose their livelihood.
Eventually the thought evolved too, making Dr. Sathe
consciously develop organization as a ‘NOT FOR LOSS’
Fostering A Real Vision of Future
The Bombay Mothers
and Children Welfare
Society
entity, which today is its identity too, as the debt-ridden
organization almost on a verge of a shut-down in 1985,
revived with its own efforts largely, to being a self-
sustainable entity today.
The organization has its presence in Mumbai, Pune district
and Sangli district.
The organization is dedicated to the society across its needs
and segments.
In Mumbai the organization
Ÿ Runs a low cost hospital in South Mumbai, which is
equipped with updated technology needed for healthcare
Ÿ 2 cancer patient convalescent home that provide
residential facility to outstation cancer patients coming
to Tata Memorial Hospital for treatment
Ÿ 3 Creches or Day care centers, that provide a home
away from home environment to the children of
working parents for 11 hours
Ÿ In Pune district, in Rajgurunagar Taluka the
organization
Ÿ Runs a rural hospital equipped with updated facilities
needed to facilitate good medical care to villagers
Ÿ Provides for Health, Hygenie & Nutrition of Women
and Children in 92 tribal villages
Ÿ Facilitates education by holding hand of the
government, by providing e-learning to the tribal
schools across the taluka
Ÿ Has equipped schools and villages with Solar Power
resources there by ensuring that they are not deprived of
electricity.
Ÿ Provides for mobile education via a mobile education
van that is equipped with computers. The driver of the
van, a local tribal, has been trained to teach the kids in
villages as well.
Ÿ Empowering women and making them financially
independent, by training them in various vocational
courses. Today 5000 women have been trained in
tailoring and they make a living by using their skills,
thereby contributing to the overall income of the family.

35. In Sangli district the organization runs a rural hospital.
This organization has always been rich in its real estate
assets and goodwill of the people. Most of the turnaround
was possible because seeking change within the
organization meant utilizing the properties left behind by
the founders to its fullest capacities.
114 room facility has benefitted millions of patients over
the last 4 decades.
This was the first foray into converting the dying
organization into a sustainable entity.
The low-cost hospital which once belonged to a locality of
low income group, with demographic changes around, no
more could be tagged as a hospital in a low income locality.
Progressive and upwardly moving lower middle class was
reluctant to go to public hospitals and could not afford a
private hospital. This perception gave a clear direction for
transformation of hospital. Today it is immaculately clean,
aesthetically beautiful, equipped with latest medical care
facilities, it boasts of highly experienced doctors, full of
compassion and an equally compassionate and dedicated
staff that provide medical services to this segment. In 1985,
a hospital too was on the verge of a closure, with reduction
in charges by 70 percent, it began to attract patients and rest
is history. Today we have patients who visit another doctor
and insist that the doctor treat the patient in Dr. Tilak
Hospital only.
With time, women from middle income group had also
started to venture to out and make a living. The problem of
who will look after my child when I am away at work was a
perennial concern. Creches were available but they only
provided for the physical wellbeing of the child. She
wanted a home away from home environment which would
look after the overall wellbeing and growing up of the child
while she is at work. And so came up, extension and
expansion of the already existing creche in Vile Parle.
Case in point being two low-cost hospitals, one that was
running in losses. Dr. Sathe decided to shut it down as a
functional hospital and cut the losses. At the same time, he
realised that cancer patients coming from outstation for
treatment to Tata Memorial Hospital found it very
expensive to pay for accommodation in Mumbai. With
availability of space in a hospital, it was converted into a
supportive care center for cancer patients where one patient
and two relatives of the patient can live for the entire
duration of the treatment at a minimal cost of INR 700 per
day. We provide for an individual room and a big common
kitchen with hot plates, so the patient gets home cooked
food, which the relatives can cook.
33 | January, 2024 | www.insightssuccess.in
36. Murals on the walls that spoke of stories from the erstwhile
fables, Panchatantra stories painted too all over, along with
creating a child friendly environment with hobby classes,
tuition teachers, sanskar classes etc, was a great innovation
and it fulfilled the wish of many parents seeking to have a
facility that would look after their little one while they are
away at work.
And that’s how creches in Mumbai eventually found their
path and provided for 700 kids across three creches in Vile
Parle East, Goregaon East and Lower Parel. The Lower
Parel was focused on children of house-helps and that of
truly the lower income groups.
The Rajgurunagar hospital was renovated in 1996. Until
1974, a 4-acre campus remained as a primary healthcare
center. Today it speaks a different story altogether.
Rural development is always an expensive affair which
even the government is not capable of sustaining so how
would we venture into it. The organization was invited by
the central government to join the RCH program. Having
joined that, as a secretary of the organization, fully involved
in its day to day functioning, Dr. Sathe realised the real
problems at the grassroot level in villages and its solutions
that would help them overcome those issues, only two years
into the program.
Perceptions at grassroot were completely different, was a
reality and hence he decided to apply his concept of
PERCEPTIVE POLICY development and solve the
problems. Having perceived the problems right at the
bottom, the approach taken was ‘Bottom Up Approach’
That worked and continues to work a long way.
Education was made uninteresting and the rural children
found it boring. The organization decided to use technology
and introduced animated digitised curriculum. That worked.
Projector based curriculum, converted the classroom into a
movie theatre, with 100 percent attendance of children and
there was no looking back.
From initial introduction in 72 schools in 2013, we have
clocked in 600 schools as of 2023. 30000 students are
learning on this platform presently. The outlook of the
parents and families in these remote villages has changed
seeing the brighter and more positive side of education.

The Most Recommended Rehabilita on Centers in India
37. The impact was such that the villagers started to contribute
15 percent of the project cost, and took up responsibility of
maintaining and sustaining it. Demand rose, but intermittent
electric supply made utilisation inefficient. That’s when Dr.
Sathe decided to introduce Solar Power to the schools. The
reality today is ‘Uninterrupted, interesting and impacting
education’ is available to the marginally compromised.
Health and Hygiene concerns were tackled effectively by
door to door services for all aged groups, which included
anti natal and post-natal services, medical advice to
geriatric population, vaccination advise and nutrition
support to the newborns and children. The hospital medical
van with trained staff travelled villages and provided for all
services.
Malnutrition in schools was tackled by providing nutritional
support, that was backed by logistical support by the local
school teachers. This support was given after a thorough
study and survey.
Plantation to green the earth was on our radar. We
innovated the project by giving 5 fruit trees to Below
Poverty line families. They were asked to plant it in their
backyard. Ownership improved the survival to 80%. Now
the yield, generates an income of Rs.1000/Per month, and is
working as reverse risk mitigation.
We as an organization have raised a human nursery and
they are those who are the pillars of our organization. With
most of our employees having very basic to no formal
education, the willingness to learn and grow, along with
their dedication and loyalty to the organization is what stays
our USP.
So here we are and such is our story.
