  2. 2. Jacques Cousteau <ul><li>Jacques Cousteau was born on the 11th of June, 1910 in a small city in France. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>When he was young, he was very sick. The doctor told him to swim to make his body stronger. </li></ul><ul><li>Jacques loved the water all his life. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>He loved water, but he also loved machines. </li></ul><ul><li>When he was 13 years old, he bought a movie camera and made many films with his family and friends. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Jacques was not a good student and was expelled. Then, he joined the Navy. </li></ul><ul><li>In the Navy he traveled the world and made many films with his movie camera. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>He quit the Navy to study the ocean and make more movies. </li></ul><ul><li>He bought a boat named “Calypso” and traveled the world- even Antarctica. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Jacques wanted to stay under water for more time, so he helped invent the ‘Aqualung’. </li></ul><ul><li>This is the start of Scuba diving! </li></ul><ul><li>He did the deepest dive of all time in the Marianas Trench- 10.9 kilometers deep. This is a world record. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>He made many movies and television shows like “The Underwater World of Jacques Cousteau.” </li></ul><ul><li>This was the first time people could see sea life! </li></ul><ul><li>Because of Jacques Cousteau, people know more about the ocean and are not afraid. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>He loved the ocean, and noticed a lot of pollution from humans. </li></ul><ul><li>Jacques said, “People protect what they love.” So he started the Cousteau Society to help protect the ocean. </li></ul><ul><li>He died on the 25th of June, 1997, but his children also protect the ocean. </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>His son started a program for children called “Ambassadors of the Environment” to teach children about nature and how humans effect it. </li></ul><ul><li>Important ideas: </li></ul><ul><li>-Reduce, reuse, recycle and renew </li></ul><ul><li>-Solar energy </li></ul><ul><li>-Everything is connected </li></ul>
