Abstract The Latino and Hispanic population continues to increase at a lower rate every year in the
U.S., they account for a large portion of the population. However, it hasn't change the portrayal of
Latinos in the media. Often, the Latino community is shown in a negative light that doesn't represent
the reality of this community. The main goal of this paper is to show and understand how the media
portray Latinos and ways to solve the problem.

The Latino community is not just a group of people with the same heritage, but a family who works
together to give others a better life and success. Being a Latina in such a world where minorities do
not have as many opportunities as the privileged majority is very difficult. Especially in these times
where minorities aren't able to have a say in their government and are attacked for their heritage.
However, standing together as a community against oppression can be just as powerful as a united

the development of children living in the United States. The Public Policy Institute of California
(PPIC) indicated that poverty is uppermost with children making up 21.6% living below the poverty

The question I was assigned is, "What barriers are preventing Latinos from seeking help?" In class
we discussed homelessness and everyone came up with different questions. I have to compare my

opinion. Now with the Chicano literature of the 1970s and '80s we get a more direct perspective
from Latinos themselves. Of course many centuries have passed since the early writings but now

What is the image of the male Latino American in the media today in television, in the movies, and
in other media? Is the male Latino represented fairly in American media? And if he is often
presented as a stereotype, why is he portrayed in stereotypical situations? The answers to those
questions come from a number of sources that will be presented in this paper.
The Literature
Author Scott L. Baugh has examined the role of Latino Americans in the movies, and he explains
that there "...remains the uneven balance of power among characters," in particular with reference to
Latino "subordinate characters" that tend to be portrayed as "stereotypes" (Baugh, 2012, p. 259).
Early films (in the late 19th century and early 20th century) depicted a very "simple hierarchy," in
which the heroes and main characters were white and held positions of "leadership and agency"
(Baugh, 259). Latino characters were "secondary" to those main white characters, and Latino
characters tended to be the villains, Baugh explained.
In those early portrayals, the "privileged non–Latina woman" was often "lured into the sensual

The most prevalent lessons that my community has taught me is that silence is an enabler. I was
born and raised in the Logan Square community where several Latinos reside. Chicago is home to

My mother had gone through way too many situations to grasp. It was not until she had a little girl
for herself that everything she had been through hit her. She saw everything that happened to her
when looking in my eyes. Being that she had no one here to talk to, except that family friend who
later on became her partner she wanted to give up and became severely depressed. After being
interned at the mental hospital my mother soon started receiving therapy and taking antidepressants

Imagine all your life you been surrounded with people that have the same characteristic as you. You

history people have been separated into a specific group based on the color of their skin and how
