Narrative Essay About My First Day
I couldn't see. The tears were blinding my eyes as I choked for air. The high pitched squealing
deafened my ears. Then, all of the sudden, it stopped. It was a cold, rainy Thursday, with the rain
pelting the window. It was freezing, even though it was the end of summer's blazing days. My tiny,
uneducated brain was ready for my first day of elementary. Little did I know, this would be a very
disgusting day. I joyfully woke up to my mom's calming voice and hopped out of bed without any
hesitation. My crazy hair needed to be controlled so my mom willingly sprayed her rat poison in my
hair in the small bathroom. I remember seeing her and my sisters face peering through the wide
mirror. My mom had surprisingly a look of worry on her face while my sister looked excited. After
escaping the tiny bathroom, my little self set off like a rocket to my room to throw on my clothes
made at Kohls. I dug into my drawers and found all the clothes my mom ordered me to find. I fit
into brown cargo shorts, a white collared shirt, and really high socks. I looked proudly at myself in
my closet mirror that definitely needed to be washed. As I grabbed my heavy bag that felt like it was
full of weights and swung the door, I laid my eyes upon my dog. She was curious why I was leaving
today. I remembered that I wouldn't see her until the day was over. The fear now hit me. Worry
started to flow through my veins as I hopped in my mom's black Ford SUV. "Ready for school?" she
questioned. "Yes," my

A Narrative About A Hero's Journey
My mind raced like the race car, my heart beats as the hooves of a horse on a racetrack, and my
thick eyelashes holding up the tears that were going to fall. As I locked eyes with the Monster, I
knew that I wasn't safe. The angry blue eyes like the ocean waves were locked in with my helpless
black ones. This time, the ocean waves were set to destroy a ship. This time, that helpless ship was
me.

I looked up and I froze. My tongue was twisted up and the thoughts in my brain froze. My heart was
beating out my chest as I saw the monster lips played the cruelest smirk ever.
I should have never come out of my hiding place. I should have stayed there. Why did I have to get
out of my safe heaven? Why?
"Annie, Annie, Annie. Are you trying to hide from me?" It asked Yes because you are a monster
I could hear the people around me gasp as the smile of the monster was torn away from its face.
"What did you just say?" It asked. I could see the red fumes coming out the elf–like ears of the
monster.
"Nothing" I whispered. My mind was processing on what I said.
Oh, Mom was right. I really need a filter in my brain. I can't believe I just said that.
"NO. You tell me what you said" It demanded to break me away from my thoughts
I sat there quiet, with my head ducked down. Though the gaps of hair, I could my classmates

They were given the nicknames, due to a minor incident, in which Chainsaw and Red Demon broke
the arm, back, and legs of Black Prince's brother, resulting in a fight which lasted almost a second.
This became a dreadful fight, affecting countless people, ruining the eyes of those who watched.

moment they began they knew that Chainsaw had won because Black Prince had sneezed. Red

of the window and tried to tell him, "No, we aren't telling ghost stories here." Chainsaw clutched his
fists and looked down towards his heart with a serious face. "As you already know, I am concerned
about the ich on the scratch on my hand. I wasn't getting anywhere scratching them with my hand.
That's when... I saw the tweezers my dad left lying around in the bathroom. I thought: 'I know! I

Black Hair : Physical And Psychological Protective Styles...
Black Hair: Physical or Psychological Protective Styles Chaunci Letang Much attention is given to
the issue of the perfect body image among young girls and women in the United States; however,
within this set of people, little attention is given towards black women and the topic of their hair.
How are black women affected by these unrealistic standards for beauty, especially in a world that
tends to favor the Eurocentric standards? This study discusses the phenomenon behind black women
and their hairstyles and explains that their choice in hairstyle is not solely reliant on societal
expectations, but also equally of their own personality, self–esteem, and time. The topic of beauty
standards and body image is a pressing matter regularly discussed in today's society. However, the
concept of black beauty (those of African descent), both its internal and external components, has
yet to be explored thoroughly. I aim to discover the motives of black women who wear protective
styles–wigs, weaves, and braids. Do black women in the Syracuse area wear protective styles as a
physical protective style to shield their natural hair from the harsh and sporadic environment or do
they wear it for psychological reasons to shield their emotions from the harsh critics and scrutiny
that black women face in a Eurocentric environment? This study is done with the purpose to bring to
light the opinions of black women, whose feelings are frequently ignored and undermined in our
society. In

The Importance Of Hair In Black Popular Culture
Black popular culture defined in the "The Repertoire of Black Popular Culture" is an arena of daily
life in any culture that actualizes, engenders, operationalizes, or signifies pleasure, enjoyment, and
amusement according to the beliefs, values, experiences, and social institutions of people of African
descent in particular but also other racial groups in general (Nelson). Hair in black popular culture is
prominent because the media defines what is "good" hair. The defining hair based off different
grades of hair makes it seem that other types of hair are not good enough, nappy, and uncontrollable.
In this paper I will address how hair affects the self–esteem of African Americans. I will also
address different hairstyles that are a part of the black culture, and how they have evolved
throughout popular culture. The history of black hair is very complex and important for
understanding how the controversy of hair became to be. The way black women see the world is
based off of their hair. Prior to the transatlantic slave trade, black hair was modeled by Nubian
knots, dreadlocks, twist, and braids to show cultural and spiritual meanings. After being forced to
move away from their roots, black hair was forever altered because life in North America was
different. In the New World the special types of combs were not available for black people to
upkeep their hair. So, the women took to wearing headscarves and handkerchiefs to shield
themselves from the hard labor in the sun, but

The Black Hair Is A Mutation Of The Gene Mc1r
Did you know redheads are mutants? Yup! The gene that causes red hair is a mutation of the gene
MC1R. There is an Ancient Greek superstition that redheads mutate into vampires when they die,
and I guess it's based off fact. In this paper, I will explain the different stereotypes of hair color,
where they come from, and where the actual color of hair comes from scientifically. I will mostly be
talking about women and girls when I talk about stereotypes, only for the reason that they are
stereotyped the most. (Side note: I will be using the term ginger to describe redheaded people. It has
been, and sometimes is, a derogatory name, but to me it is what my friends call me as an endearing
nickname. I think it has lost a lot of it's disparaging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the time, people unconsciously stereotype people. Only the people who are put in groups
feel the stereotype. That way, the people who are in power, or the people who stereotype, are the
"us", and the people who get stereotyped are the "them".
Since we talked about the Social Identity Theory, we now need to know how the "them" group, or
the people who are stereotyped, are persecuted. Sometimes, stereotypes and/or biases are completely
unconscious, unplanned, and impersonal. But some are based on what they see in others. I think it's
completely true that some blondes are dumb and ditzy, and some brunettes are just plain boring, but
that is someone's personality, and it is not caused by their hair color. Correlation is not causation,
people.
Stereotypes hurt and persecute people in a very different way than most people think. It's mostly
unconscious, but their self–esteem is lowered when they are looked at differently than everyone
else. We all are biased in some way, and we all stereotype people every moment of every day. We
just have to be careful that what we say doesn't hurt anyone.
All redheads have a vitamin D deficiency due to a lack of eumelanin. The flip side is: gingers can
make their own! My thinking for this fun fact is that since they mostly evolved in Scotland, where
it's cloudy, they evolved to make their own. (Humans get Vitamin D from sunlight).

It has really impacted the way society views hair. Throughout film, one will most commonly see a
light skin black woman with loose curly hair as the main character. In publicly broadcasted
pageants, it is not common for the black women to be wearing their natural hair. It was not until this
year that the Miss Universe pageant had contestants who rocked their natural hair. Miss Jamaica,
Davina Bennet, represented black women beautifully and was second runner up. It is becoming
more common to see black women representing their natural hair who have a platform, but they are

famous black women spent immense amount of money and time on taking care of hair that is not
their God given hair. Oprah, Michelle Obama, and Beyoncé are some of the women included in this
phenomena (Stevens). If natural hair is so big then why is it not represented more on films? Natural

Black Assimilation Through Hair
Hair is an aspect of identity many women are made to confront. It is a projection of how a woman
would like to be perceived and who she believes she is within her society. Black women in America
face an interesting dilemma when it comes to hair. When African slaves were brought to America,
they were confronted with the Eurocentric ideal of beauty, which, in addition to pale skin and Anglo
Saxon facial structure, also included straightened hair. As time progressed, black people sought new
ways to assimilate. Throughout the course of time many hair straightening agents such as
straightening irons, perms, and hair extensions have been used to help aid black people in
mimicking the hairstyles of the socially accepted white standards. More ... Show more content on

Their businesses were booming at the time because of the high demand for straight hair. Both
women became millionaires through the marketing of hair products and beauty techniques.
Another famous African American inventor was Garret A. Morgan. He was the creator and inventor
of the relaxer: a topical cream used to make African American hair more "manageable" (according
to the white standard) by smoothing out the hair follicles in a way to force the naturally curled hair
straight. The idea for hair relaxers came from working on sewing machines in his workshop. He
found that chemicals used to repair sewing machines relaxed the curls of kinky hair. His first live
test subject was an Airedale dog, a breed that has naturally curly hair. The dog's hair successfully
uncurled. The same results occurred when he tested the chemicals on his own head. Once he
discovered this he quickly established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company and sold the cream
to African Americans. Hair Refining Cream, sold under his newly formed G. A. Morgan Refining
Company. This marked the birth of the alkaline relaxer and the start of a revolution in the Black hair
care market.
However much Morgan contributed to African–American history, he never reached the heights
attained by Madam C. J. Walker, who was known as the "de–kink queen." Madam Walker and Annie
Turnbo Malone (1869–1957) were colleagues in a way. Malone was actually Madame Walker's

What Is The Character Of George Eliot'sThe Mill On The Floss
Throughout The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot embodies the struggle between following one's
temperament and containing one's natural tendencies in the character of Maggie Tulliver. As the
novel follows her coming of age, Maggie grows from being an impulsive, dreamy child to a young
woman who struggles with subduing her passions. In containing her personality, Maggie struggles
internally; and this containment further manifests in her hair, one of her most noteworthy features.
Unruly in her childhood, her hair becomes continually contained as Maggie subdues more of her
natural personality. Yet, Maggie's unruly hair, along with her rash persona, returns in the final
chapter of the novel. Ultimately, following this struggle of subduing natural temperament,
manifested in the presentation of Maggie's hair, suggests that quelling one's natural personality is as
dangerous as never controlling one's temperament. In chronicling Maggie's childhood, Eliot
highlights the rash and dreamy qualities that dominate Maggie's personality. Rather than be "the
neatest little rosebud" like her cousin Lucy, Maggie is more unruly and this leads her maternal aunts
to view her with a critical eye, especially in regards to her unkempt hair (Eliot 58). It is this critique
of her hair that spurs Maggie to demonstrate her impulsive streak as she decides to cut her hair.
Once Maggie realizes the haphazardness of her handiwork, the narrator states, "Maggie rushed to
her deeds with passionate impulse, and

Main characters[edit source | editbeta]
Clarissa "Clary" Fray (also referred to as Fairchild and Morgenstern) is described to have long, curly
red hair and bright green eyes. She is very small and thin and often viewed as younger than she
actually is. Clary is an artist and in the first book, City of Bones, she believes she is a mundane, or a
human without angelic powers. It is later revealed she is in fact a Shadowhunter, or a human with
angelic qualities. Clary is described as being incredibly stubborn and often rushes into dangerous
situations without thinking about the consequences. Her best friend in the series is Simon Lewis and
she is dating Jace Lightwood.

Valentine is believed to be dead in City of Bones but at the end the reader finds out he is alive and

stealing the Mortal Instruments in order to raise the angel Raziel. In City of Glass, Valentine's real
son Jonathan, or Sebastian Verlac who he pretends to be in order to gain access into Idris and earn
the Shadowhunters trust, shows up and we discover that Valentine fed demonic blood to his son in
order to create a new breed of "Dark" Shadowhunters which are more powerful than ordinary
Shadowhunters. Valentine is killed by the angel Raziel after he raises him from Lake Lyn.

Analysis Of I Am Not My Hair: A Struggle For Black Women
India Arie was one of the artists referenced to a room filled with students because of her bold but
relatable message when she sang "Good hair means curls and waves, bad hair means you look like a
slave. At the turn of the century it's time for us to redefine who we be. You can shave it off like a
South African beauty, or get it lock like Bob Marley, you can rock it straight like Oprah Winfrey if
it's not on your head it's what's underneath and say, hey, I am not my hair." The discussion of hair is
relatable to everyone because it is something we all have to deal with in our life. However, Blacks in
particular have struggled with accepting their hair as it is because Black hair does not fit the
description of what the media projects to be beautiful or professional. Instead, the media tells Black
women that the more European your hair looks or you look, the more beautiful you are. Fitting in to
the European standard of beauty has been a struggle for Black women. In the Black community,
Black women wear their hair in many different styles. While there is nothing wrong with these
styles, the discussion that took place Feb. 6, 2017 in Twombly lounge, "I am not my Hair... Am I"

Crash. Crash. Woosh. The Boston beach is my favorite sound to wake up to. I stare out the glass

While Mary is my maid, she is my matriarchal figure. My mother passed away while giving birth to

Child Observation On Human Development
Introduction
For this observation project we were supposed to watch two different groups of people whose ages
range from two to twenty. So we could apply our knowledge of human growth and development to
test the effectiveness of current theories and research on development. For my observations I
watched two different groups, group A were ages three to four and group B were ages eighteen to
twenty. Group A, I observed on a warm, bright sunny Monday afternoon. I watched the children as
they played on the playground behind the Lions Club Child Study Center on campus. On this day, I
watched a group of 4 children, which included three girls and one boy as they played. One of the

All the females in the group appeared to have strong memory skills. The children were able to
follow complex direction. The only male in the group seemed to struggle with memory. After, a
while of play the male became more interested in a bug in the sand. This behavior reinforces Flavell,
when he said that children's attention is more like a flash of light that focus on what it wants
(Woolfolk & Perry, 2015, p. 230). After, examining the bug for a while he began to play as
superman. Playing pretend helps children develop better social skills, self–control, and they
understand the perspective of others (Woolfolk & Perry, 2015, p. 242). While observing group B
they performed the task of sitting around, talking, and laughing very well. The females in the groups
appeared to have strong memory skills. They could follow complex directions. On the other hand,
the males in the group seemed to have a problem with memory skills. While watching Group B, the
male with the pink T–shirt started doing push–up and shortly after the male with the black shirt
started to do them too. The two males within the group seems to be struggling with imaginary
audience. Imaginary Audience is the "feeling that everyone is watching" (Woolfolk & Perry, 2015,
p. 513). This was probably caused by the excusive use of the internet. In a study done by Moreno, it
was found that adolescents of color used the internet

Black Hair : The Untold Story
Black Hair
(The Untold Story)
Discrimination comes in all forms and types, but who knew you could be left out or viewed
differently because of a hairstyle or hair color. Do to cultural and ethnic differences when it comes
to "Black Hair" there 's what appears to be a social stigma towards African–American hair in
society.
To some, there has been a difference felt towards black hair culture in the workforce as well as in
the media in comparison to other people and cultures. This has also caused a conflict in the self–
confidence of many African–Americans who don 't know how to properly be themselves while also
fitting into society 's preference.
This epidemic although current and recent is not new; for years and centuries it's been reported
about the African American hairstyle culture differences. According to Kristin Booker author of the
article A History of Black Hair in America, she feels that because African
Americans, who were brought from their home lands and subjected to European cultures and ways
of beauty, have a hard time with their own identity and personal expression. European and
American cultures have influenced the way blacks felt about their own hair.
Dating back to slavery days and even before transition to slavery, Africans wore different hair styles
to have different means. Shane White and Graham White authors of The Journal of
Southern History wrote, "The way African American slaves styled their hair was important to them
as individuals, and it also played

Black people's hair comes in many different ways, there is the fine hair, the curly hair, or the thick

will get very tangled. Those of you who've tried that know what I'm talking about. Braiding it is
another long story; I mean it hurts, and you have to put up with the crying and wailing of your child.
Even washing it is enormous work. Another disadvantage that comes with black hair is that it
usually doesn't grow very long. The few of us who are fortunate to have longer hair have to deal

Gently massage their scalp, rinse and repeat the process. After shampooing twice, apply plenty of
conditioner then separate the hair into four sections (or more if you prefer), and use a wide tooth
comb to gently disentangle the hair. Rinse hair and wrap it with a towel, avoid fussing with the
towel so that the hair doesn't get tangled. When you feel like the hair has dried enough, it's time to
start braiding. Use the comb to section the hair into the style you want, apply a tiny amount of oil or
pomade to the scalp and the body of the hair, and start combing at the end and slowly work your
way up towards the scalp. Now you can braid that section! If you are doing corn rows, think of it as
doing a lot of tiny or medium French braids. Use the same method as you would for the braids,
comb starting at the ends and moving up towards the scalp. Avoid yanking the hair when it is
knotted, but instead use one hand to hold the section that has already been braided and use the other
to GENTLY unknot the hair with the comb. During this time your child will be crying and wailing
and you will feel guilty, but you have to continue because if you don't braid the hair and let it out, it
will be much worse. One clue that might make your life easier is to avoid using a detangling brush,

Hair: Discrimination Of Black Girls
This whole movement for Natural hair may seem a little extreme to some, especially to those who
aren't Black women. Hair is just hair, right? It's ridiculous that how your hair naturally grows out of
your head effects how society looks at you. There is no way that wearing your hair naturally could
prevent you from getting a job or could get you kicked out of your classroom while you're trying to
get your education right? Well it's 2016 and that's exactly what happens to Black girls all over the
globe.
On August 29, students at Pretoria Girl High School, in South Africa, joined together in protest
against their school's discriminatory– or for a better word "racist"– policies that seemed to target

In 2014, 12 year–old Vanessa VanDyke was threatened to be expelled from her school, Faith
Christian Academy in Orlando, Fl., if she didn't comply with the schools dress code and cut her hair,
which they deemed a "distraction." A few months before VanDyke's incident, another little girl, 7
year–old Tiana Parker, was sent home from her school, Deborah Brown Community School in
Tulsa, Oak., because her dreadlocks violated school policy, which stated that "hairstyles such as
dreadlocks, afros, mohawks, and other faddish styles are unacceptable." Earlier this year, a group of
high school girls were suspended from school in Nassau, Bahamas, for wearing their hair natural
because it was dubbed "untidy, un groomed, and unkempt hair." The list of natural hair
discrimination incidents in schools can go on– even longer if you want to include discrimination
incidents towards Black hair in the work place, but this article would never end if I listed all of
them. All of these incidents serve as a reminder why non–black people wearing black hairstyles is so

Analysis Of Black Hair By Gary Soto
"Black Hair" by Gary Soto is a three stanza, free verse poem that observes the life of a young
Mexican boy and his admiration for Hector Moreno, a Mexican baseball figure. The speaker is
immediately identified as the young boy as he starts to reminisce about when he was eight years old.
The boy goes on to talk about how he thought of himself at this age, as well as Hector and his
parents. He would watch the baseball games and look up to Hector, copying him, and addressing
how this win for Hector would be a win for him and all the "brown people". The audience isn't
addressed as a literal part of the poem, so we can imagine it from a bird's eye point of view. The
poem takes place within the mind of the former boy, reflecting on his time among ... Show more

So how might the author demonstrate his piece and how do these tools affect the way in which we
understand his overall message? To follow, I will explore the ways in which the author chose to
deliver his message and which tools make this successful from the audience's perspective. An
immediate choice I notice from the author is his selective diction. Soto uses a lot of strong diction
like dirty, torch, terror, flared, and twisting, but none captivate the character as well as when he uses
the word "brilliant". When Soto uses the word brilliant in stanza one and three, he does not mean to
say intelligent or excellent. Instead, Soto uses this word to mean something more with a literal and
physical meaning, like how he states towards the end of the poem, "In the bleachers I was brilliant
with my body/Waving players in and stomping my feet" (Soto 21–22), connecting it to the body and
its actions. This brings the character alive and gives the boy a feeling of acceptance and power,
connecting him with the community and success he was becoming a part of. Soto's diction led me to
notice the radiance this word gave the boy, which exposed the theme of lightness and darkness,
symbolizing the child's journey through hope. The

Hair In The Black Community
Hair in the black community is complicated. Barbershops and beauty salons are important in black
communities alongside black churches. Appearances really matter in the black communities. Black
women in films adjust their appearances to media consumption. Most black actresses have already
chemically straightened hair. Historically, straight and wavy hair is seen as more socially acceptable.
Straight hair is more acceptable than kinky hair because it is seen as features closer to white
features. I used to think that my hair defined me; it determines how beautiful I am. I did not care
about my hair when I was younger; the only time I started to care about hair or appearances was
when I entered school. School should have been an institution where ... Show more content on

Most black actresses wear weaves or straighten their hair, I think to be more like their white
counterparts. Hollywood, a very powerful institution, that has already ostracize Black women's
natural hair. Portraying it as nappy, advertising the alternatives such as perms frequently. Black
actresses are just trying to fit in, perming their hair or resulting to weaves. We are constantly being
judged as black women about what our hair looks like, somebody already determines who we are
and what we are doing. The notion that most black actresses wear weaves correlates with media
socially dictated beauty standards. I am not advocating "anti–perm" or "anti–weave" I am simply
proclaiming more versatility in media culture and confidence in Black women. I know black women
are vain and they want to look good, but why does the notion of attractiveness associates with
straight or wavy hair? I remember growing up and seeing my mother frying, singeing, chemically
destroying and finally beating into submission my grandmother's hair. The smell of the perm is so
strong that when I curiously smelled the container of the perm, it made my head snap back. Then I
jokingly said, "What are you trying to do, kill cattle?" It is just sad that black women have to, as my
mother say, "make sure the 'kitchen' (the back of one's head) is straight" figuratively and literally.
When Black women do their own perm, they typically start from the "nappy" texture of her hair, the
roots, perms is just another institution that subconsciously forces us to conform to something that is
not natural for us, thus losing a sense of our cultural

I Watched It Die By Teresa Sandoval
She watched it die.
At the top of her apartment complex, above families and lovers, perched a figure on the ledge of the
rooftop. It stood above layers of humanity in that complex, liveliness indicated by the lights shining
through the different curtains and blinds covering most of the windows of the complex. The figure
stepped closer to the edge, its head turned to Teresa Sandoval. The silhouette reminded her of a
woman: the harsh wind pulled back its hair and a sheet cascaded down the building.
The smell of red wine and smoke stung her eyes. Teresa stood underneath the one working
streetlight on the entire street: all the other lights flickered. As the figure moved closer to the edge,
the lights flickered even more. The buzzing grew louder. Teresa's cheeks were red from the alcohol
she had downed only fifteen minutes earlier and the cold wind slapping against her cheeks. She
leaned against the pole, her burning eyes still fixed on the shadow as it halted right up to the ledge.
She glanced quickly at the pavement in front of her then right up to the figure. The moon shone
brightly behind the figure, long black hair illuminated. As it walked closer, the lights behind the
windows at the feet of the figure were killed. She felt like she was at a shootout with an unknown
enemy. She pretended the sweat slicking her neck was from the hot desert air, that her eyes were
stinging from the sand flying to her face. Teresa scratched her wrist, a habit of hers when nerves

Black Hair By Lilly Caldwell Essay
There is a very wide known issue on hair in America based on the dynamics of hair around
presentation and first impressions. There is a present concern in the work environment as well as in
the public sector, where racial biases are within communities and society as a whole. After watching
the documentary by Chris Rock called "Black Hair" (inspired by his daughter's inquiry on nappy
hair) there were many famous characters, which stated they would much rather wear straight hair
verses curly, kinky hair also permed hair forced straight by chemicals. In the article Edited by Lilly
Caldwell 2004 "Look at Her Hair" with the song "THE NEGRA IN BRAZILIAN POPULAR
CULTURE" Lilly say's, this song provides a telling example of Black women 's portrayal in
Brazilian popular culture. After my researched online. I found a news source with a case pending
here in the US where a Black woman with "Locks", was hired on a job, then told she must change
her hairstyle, it was not acceptable, which was racist and degrading. The issues with the acceptance
of back hair in America and around the world is a condition of pride, self–esteem and ignorance.
When the women were speaking in the documentary by 'Chris Rock' on black hair not being good
enough and out dated, this was hard to here from black women, it being their own natural beauty.
They also displayed ignorance and low self–esteem in my opinion. I know that if you make
preparations efficiently, black hair can always be beautiful. It is so

Hair Matters : Beauty, Power, And Black Women 's...
Throughout the years, the topic of Hair has been known to help portray how a person identifies with
oneself. Black Americans have often been identified by their hair and the subject of black hair has
seem to become an issue. Natural textured hair or the hairstyle called an "afro" were just a few types
mentioned when the subject of hairstyles are discussed. In the black community hair became a
political statement in the late 1970's. There are articles noted with information suggesting the "Afro
Hairstyle" to be considered as a political statement not just a hairstyle. This was around the time that
black people were relentless in discovering the facts about their history. In the book titled "Hair
Matters: Beauty, Power, and Black Women's Consciousness, "Ingrid Banks, Associate Professor of
Black Studies at University of California Santa Barbara states: "the pressing comb and chemical
relaxers became oppressive because they were tools that symbolized the shame associated with
black hair in its natural state." Black people that wore this type of afro–centric type hair soon
became infamous for being accused of being involved in some type of crime.
As the years went by the afro hairstyle became a normalcy in the American cities along with many
other different types of hairstyles and textures. Black people wearing braids became the new
"Natural" hairstyles in America. The revolution of Relaxed Hair began to evolve. There were new
and improved chemical hair products that could

The end of slavery bought new challenges for everyone, and the same feelings and views associated
with African or African–American people before, were still there (A Look Back at the Black Hair
Story).
Hiding out of embarrassment did not last too long. Garrett Augustus Morgan, the child of two
former slaves, noticed that certain chemicals he used at the clothing factory he worked at could not
only straighten fabric, but also hair (Taylor). After his first successful live experiments, first on the
naturally curly fur of an Airedale dog and later on himself, he opened the G. A. Morgan Hair
Refining Company in 1913 and began to straighten hair in his home workshop. The chemicals he
used were very strong could never touch human skin. The alkaline and lye chemical mixture strips
the hair of proteins and removes the curl permanently. In order to maintain the chemically
straightened hair, the relaxer would have to be reapplied every six weeks, or every time the curly
hair began to grow back. Stemming from the time of slavery, many African–Americans found it
hard to manage their hair. Relaxers supposedly made their hair more "manageable" and caused them
to be widely accepted. Years later, African–Americans who used relaxers saw the harmful effects
that lye had on their hair. It could cause burns, hair thinning, and hair and skin loss. No–lye relaxers
were made to reduce those results. In relaxers today, chemicals a lot less

I first discovered I was black after my freshman year in high school; at the age of 15, I learned to
embrace my blackness. Throughout grade school, I found myself trying to conform to the crowd in
ways different from the other teenagers in my school. After my move to Brentwood, a place where it
is predominately white and Hispanic, it became clear to me as a child that my black assets were not
glorified as those of a white or Hispanic individual. While my friends focused on having the latest
fashionable clothing and shoes throughout elementary school and middle school, I was more
concerned about looking like my friends that had straight or curly hair. It seemed to be the "norm" to
have very straight or curly hair that was easy to manage, and easy to put in several hairstyles. ...

Personal Narrative : My Favorite Chair
I was sitting on my favorite chair going through photos of Max, my eldest son, while my husband
was putting up photos on the mantel above our fireplace. Quynh, my youngest daughter of three,
asked me about the photo with a young woman in a black and white photo wearing a pair of heels.
"Mom who is this?" I took a look, "She is your grandmother". She looked down at the photo again,
and then she ran to one of the boxes and gave me a pair of blue high heels, "Are these the shoes
she's wearing?" I answered, "Yes. Yes they are." It was about time she knew so I sat down by the
fireplace with her. "Let me tell you a story about your grandmother," She cuddled up with me and
brought our kitten, Mun, with us. I made sure she was comfortable and ... Show more content on

She would bring in candles to read late at night at her grandmother's house when she knew that it
was worth a whipping. Somehow all of that didn't matter because she didn't look brand new like she
did back at home. When she arrived her clothes were torn and her hair had fallen out of her tight bun
into a puffy and spiky cloud. After that she stayed in bed for weeks, sick to her stomach. We couldn't
afford medicine so we sold her blue high heels for and equivalence of three USD. We sold them to a
rich young man by the name of Hong who felt sympathy for our family. Went my mother was lying
in bed we heard a knock on the door. It was Mr. Hong and he was holding my mother's blue heels.
He apologized to us and handed me the shoes and left without me having the chance to say thank
you. I brought them to her but she went to sleep without saying goodnight like she always does. The
next day I woke up early to see her fixing her hair and walked out of the door swiftly without saying
goodbye. I remember the determined look on her face but it was mixed but revenge and anger. She
took the heels with her. She came back night after night with no such luck and looked skinnier and
skinnier as each day passed. We ate the food from the night before because she didn't touch a single
grain of rice. Was she losing weight for a job? Every day she became more and more tired until she
couldn't take it anymore and passed away on a winter morning. Sooner or later my father

Essay on Emmie's Crush
Maka stood beside the bed, taking a deep breath. Emmie was dead asleep, if she didn't get up soon,
they'd be late. "Emmieeee! Get UP!" she finally yelled, shacking her shoulders.
"Huh! Whut?" Emmie said, opening her eyes.
"We're going to be late for school. Hurry up!" Maka said, glad she had forced Emmie to take a
shower last night incase this came up.
"I thought I still was going though remediation classes," Emmie said, yawning.
"No, you finished them yesterday, and since my dad knows Lord Death pretty well, he got your
information to him just in time. You're officially a student at the DWMA!" Maka said, smiling at the
thought. Emmie had come to live with them just after the last school year had ended and spent the
summer with them, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maka went to the side of the school building, and sitting at two tables where two people Emmie had
never seen. They seemed to be playing some sort of game on the picnic bench, the boy with death
white skin and dark black hair with three lines on half of his hair seemingly winning.
"Unfair!" the boy with spiky blue hair yelled, grimacing.
"It is fair, prophylactic is a real word," the black haired boy said, smiling. Taking a second look,
Emmie realized that the boy with black hair was more of a man then boy. He was obviously older
then the blue haired boy, or Maka and herself.
"Kid, playing that word! Come on, I thought your dad taught you better then that!" Maka said,
laughing.
"He did teach me well, that's why I know that word. Though an unintended pregnancy is the least of
my concerns, but a disease could kill me. He's rather me be well prepared as it is," the black haired
boy replied, obviously Kid.
Emmie blushed as she realized what they were talking about. From her health class back at her old
school she remembered that prophylactic was a barrier method of birth control, a male or female
condom.
"Well, anyway, this is Emmie, the girl who's been living with me since the beginning of summer.
The one who was just talking is Kid. Sorry about our conversation, but he's always been a brother to
me, so we can get into odd conversations to say the least," Maka said and

Narrative Essay About My First Day

  • 1. Narrative Essay About My First Day I couldn't see. The tears were blinding my eyes as I choked for air. The high pitched squealing deafened my ears. Then, all of the sudden, it stopped. It was a cold, rainy Thursday, with the rain pelting the window. It was freezing, even though it was the end of summer's blazing days. My tiny, uneducated brain was ready for my first day of elementary. Little did I know, this would be a very disgusting day. I joyfully woke up to my mom's calming voice and hopped out of bed without any hesitation. My crazy hair needed to be controlled so my mom willingly sprayed her rat poison in my hair in the small bathroom. I remember seeing her and my sisters face peering through the wide mirror. My mom had surprisingly a look of worry on her face while my sister looked excited. After escaping the tiny bathroom, my little self set off like a rocket to my room to throw on my clothes made at Kohls. I dug into my drawers and found all the clothes my mom ordered me to find. I fit into brown cargo shorts, a white collared shirt, and really high socks. I looked proudly at myself in my closet mirror that definitely needed to be washed. As I grabbed my heavy bag that felt like it was full of weights and swung the door, I laid my eyes upon my dog. She was curious why I was leaving today. I remembered that I wouldn't see her until the day was over. The fear now hit me. Worry started to flow through my veins as I hopped in my mom's black Ford SUV. "Ready for school?" she questioned. "Yes," my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Narrative About A Hero's Journey My mind raced like the race car, my heart beats as the hooves of a horse on a racetrack, and my thick eyelashes holding up the tears that were going to fall. As I locked eyes with the Monster, I knew that I wasn't safe. The angry blue eyes like the ocean waves were locked in with my helpless black ones. This time, the ocean waves were set to destroy a ship. This time, that helpless ship was me. ***** (Me coming to my class and monster giving me the smile) ***** "I am going to make more copies on your homework..." Before Mrs. Carter could finish her sentence, the whole class groaned at the thought of more homework. Mrs. Carter just shook her lovely locks of brown hair and asked, " So don't make any ruckus, while I am gone. Okay? " The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I looked up and I froze. My tongue was twisted up and the thoughts in my brain froze. My heart was beating out my chest as I saw the monster lips played the cruelest smirk ever. I should have never come out of my hiding place. I should have stayed there. Why did I have to get out of my safe heaven? Why? "Annie, Annie, Annie. Are you trying to hide from me?" It asked Yes because you are a monster I could hear the people around me gasp as the smile of the monster was torn away from its face. "What did you just say?" It asked. I could see the red fumes coming out the elf–like ears of the monster. "Nothing" I whispered. My mind was processing on what I said. Oh, Mom was right. I really need a filter in my brain. I can't believe I just said that. "NO. You tell me what you said" It demanded to break me away from my thoughts I sat there quiet, with my head ducked down. Red Demon took his hand of the window and tried to tell him, "No, we aren't telling ghost stories here." Chainsaw clutched his fists and looked down towards his heart with a serious face. "As you already know, I am concerned about the ich on the scratch on my hand. I wasn't getting anywhere scratching them with my hand. That's when... Jonas looked at her in a way he never thought he could look at anyone, and pulled her in for a hug. With a gasp, Mia looked up and smiled. Black Hair: Physical or Psychological Protective Styles Chaunci Letang Much attention is given to the issue of the perfect body image among young girls and women in the United States; however, within this set of people, little attention is given towards black women and the topic of their hair. How are black women affected by these unrealistic standards for beauty, especially in a world that tends to favor the Eurocentric standards? This study discusses the phenomenon behind black women and their hairstyles and explains that their choice in hairstyle is not solely reliant on societal expectations, but also equally of their own personality, self–esteem, and time. The topic of beauty standards and body image is a pressing matter regularly discussed in today's society. However, the concept of black beauty (those of African descent), both its internal and external components, has yet to be explored thoroughly. I aim to discover the motives of black women who wear protective styles–wigs, weaves, and braids. Do black women in the Syracuse area wear protective styles as a physical protective style to shield their natural hair from the harsh and sporadic environment or do they wear it for psychological reasons to shield their emotions from the harsh critics and scrutiny that black women face in a Eurocentric environment? This study is done with the purpose to bring to light the opinions of black women, whose feelings are frequently ignored and undermined in our society. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will also address different hairstyles that are a part of the black culture, and how they have evolved throughout popular culture. The history of black hair is very complex and important for understanding how the controversy of hair became to be. The way black women see the world is based off of their hair. Prior to the transatlantic slave trade, black hair was modeled by Nubian knots, dreadlocks, twist, and braids to show cultural and spiritual meanings. After being forced to move away from their roots, black hair was forever altered because life in North America was different. In the New World the special types of combs were not available for black people to upkeep their hair. Only the people who are put in groups feel the stereotype. That way, the people who are in power, or the people who stereotype, are the "us", and the people who get stereotyped are the "them". Since we talked about the Social Identity Theory, we now need to know how the "them" group, or the people who are stereotyped, are persecuted. Sometimes, stereotypes and/or biases are completely unconscious, unplanned, and impersonal. But some are based on what they see in others. I think it's completely true that some blondes are dumb and ditzy, and some brunettes are just plain boring, but that is someone's personality, and it is not caused by their hair color. Correlation is not causation, people. Stereotypes hurt and persecute people in a very different way than most people think. The idea for hair relaxers came from working on sewing machines in his workshop. He found that chemicals used to repair sewing machines relaxed the curls of kinky hair. • 12. What Is The Character Of George Eliot'sThe Mill On The Floss Throughout The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot embodies the struggle between following one's temperament and containing one's natural tendencies in the character of Maggie Tulliver. As the novel follows her coming of age, Maggie grows from being an impulsive, dreamy child to a young woman who struggles with subduing her passions. In containing her personality, Maggie struggles internally; and this containment further manifests in her hair, one of her most noteworthy features. Unruly in her childhood, her hair becomes continually contained as Maggie subdues more of her natural personality. Yet, Maggie's unruly hair, along with her rash persona, returns in the final chapter of the novel. Ultimately, following this struggle of subduing natural temperament, manifested in the presentation of Maggie's hair, suggests that quelling one's natural personality is as dangerous as never controlling one's temperament. In chronicling Maggie's childhood, Eliot highlights the rash and dreamy qualities that dominate Maggie's personality. Rather than be "the neatest little rosebud" like her cousin Lucy, Maggie is more unruly and this leads her maternal aunts to view her with a critical eye, especially in regards to her unkempt hair (Eliot 58). It is this critique of her hair that spurs Maggie to demonstrate her impulsive streak as she decides to cut her hair. After, examining the bug for a while he began to play as superman. The boy goes on to talk about how he thought of himself at this age, as well as Hector and his parents. He would watch the baseball games and look up to Hector, copying him, and addressing how this win for Hector would be a win for him and all the "brown people". To follow, I will explore the ways in which the author chose to deliver his message and which tools make this successful from the audience's perspective. An immediate choice I notice from the author is his selective diction. Soto uses a lot of strong diction like dirty, torch, terror, flared, and twisting, but none captivate the character as well as when he uses the word "brilliant". When Soto uses the word brilliant in stanza one and three, he does not mean to say intelligent or excellent. Instead, Soto uses this word to mean something more with a literal and physical meaning, like how he states towards the end of the poem, "In the bleachers I was brilliant with my body/Waving players in and stomping my feet" (Soto 21–22), connecting it to the body and its actions. This brings the character alive and gives the boy a feeling of acceptance and power, connecting him with the community and success he was becoming a part of. Soto's diction led me to notice the radiance this word gave the boy, which exposed the theme of lightness and darkness, symbolizing the child's journey through hope. The ... Hollywood, a very powerful institution, that has already ostracize Black women's natural hair. Portraying it as nappy, advertising the alternatives such as perms frequently. Black actresses are just trying to fit in, perming their hair or resulting to weaves. We are constantly being judged as black women about what our hair looks like, somebody already determines who we are and what we are doing. The notion that most black actresses wear weaves correlates with media socially dictated beauty standards. I am not advocating "anti–perm" or "anti–weave" I am simply proclaiming more versatility in media culture and confidence in Black women. I know black women are vain and they want to look good, but why does the notion of attractiveness associates with straight or wavy hair? I remember growing up and seeing my mother frying, singeing, chemically destroying and finally beating into submission my grandmother's hair. The smell of the perm is so strong that when I curiously smelled the container of the perm, it made my head snap back. Then I jokingly said, "What are you trying to do, kill cattle?" It is just sad that black women have to, as my mother say, "make sure the 'kitchen' (the back of one's head) is straight" figuratively and literally. When Black women do their own perm, they typically start from the "nappy" texture of her hair, the roots, perms is just another institution that subconsciously forces us to conform to something that is not natural for us, thus losing a sense of our cultural ... • 25. I Watched It Die By Teresa Sandoval She watched it die. At the top of her apartment complex, above families and lovers, perched a figure on the ledge of the rooftop. It stood above layers of humanity in that complex, liveliness indicated by the lights shining through the different curtains and blinds covering most of the windows of the complex. The figure stepped closer to the edge, its head turned to Teresa Sandoval. The silhouette reminded her of a woman: the harsh wind pulled back its hair and a sheet cascaded down the building. The smell of red wine and smoke stung her eyes. Teresa stood underneath the one working streetlight on the entire street: all the other lights flickered. As the figure moved closer to the edge, the lights flickered even more. The buzzing grew louder. Teresa's cheeks were red from the alcohol she had downed only fifteen minutes earlier and the cold wind slapping against her cheeks. She leaned against the pole, her burning eyes still fixed on the shadow as it halted right up to the ledge. She glanced quickly at the pavement in front of her then right up to the figure. The moon shone brightly behind the figure, long black hair illuminated. As it walked closer, the lights behind the windows at the feet of the figure were killed. She felt like she was at a shootout with an unknown enemy. She pretended the sweat slicking her neck was from the hot desert air, that her eyes were stinging from the sand flying to her face. • 26. Black Hair By Lilly Caldwell Essay There is a very wide known issue on hair in America based on the dynamics of hair around presentation and first impressions. There is a present concern in the work environment as well as in the public sector, where racial biases are within communities and society as a whole. After watching the documentary by Chris Rock called "Black Hair" (inspired by his daughter's inquiry on nappy hair) there were many famous characters, which stated they would much rather wear straight hair verses curly, kinky hair also permed hair forced straight by chemicals. In the article Edited by Lilly Caldwell 2004 "Look at Her Hair" with the song "THE NEGRA IN BRAZILIAN POPULAR CULTURE" Lilly say's, this song provides a telling example of Black women 's portrayal in Brazilian popular culture. After my researched online. I found a news source with a case pending here in the US where a Black woman with "Locks", was hired on a job, then told she must change her hairstyle, it was not acceptable, which was racist and degrading. The issues with the acceptance of back hair in America and around the world is a condition of pride, self–esteem and ignorance. When the women were speaking in the documentary by 'Chris Rock' on black hair not being good enough and out dated, this was hard to here from black women, it being their own natural beauty. They also displayed ignorance and low self–esteem in my opinion. I know that if you make preparations efficiently, black hair can always be beautiful. It is so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Natural textured hair or the hairstyle called an "afro" were just a few types mentioned when the subject of hairstyles are discussed. There are articles noted with information suggesting the "Afro Hairstyle" to be considered as a political statement not just a hairstyle. This was around the time that black people were relentless in discovering the facts about their history. In the book titled "Hair Matters: Beauty, Power, and Black Women's Consciousness, "Ingrid Banks, Associate Professor of Black Studies at University of California Santa Barbara states: "the pressing comb and chemical relaxers became oppressive because they were tools that symbolized the shame associated with black hair in its natural state." Black people that wore this type of afro–centric type hair soon became infamous for being accused of being involved in some type of crime. As the years went by the afro hairstyle became a normalcy in the American cities along with many other different types of hairstyles and textures. The end of slavery bought new challenges for everyone, and the same feelings and views associated with African or African–American people before, were still there (A Look Back at the Black Hair Story). Hiding out of embarrassment did not last too long. Garrett Augustus Morgan, the child of two former slaves, noticed that certain chemicals he used at the clothing factory he worked at could not only straighten fabric, but also hair (Taylor). After his first successful live experiments, first on the naturally curly fur of an Airedale dog and later on himself, he opened the G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Company in 1913 and began to straighten hair in his home workshop. The chemicals he used were very strong could never touch human skin. The alkaline and lye chemical mixture strips the hair of proteins and removes the curl permanently. In order to maintain the chemically straightened hair, the relaxer would have to be reapplied every six weeks, or every time the curly hair began to grow back. Stemming from the time of slavery, many African–Americans found it hard to manage their hair. Relaxers supposedly made their hair more "manageable" and caused them to be widely accepted. Years later, African–Americans who used relaxers saw the harmful effects that lye had on their hair. It could cause burns, hair thinning, and hair and skin loss. No–lye relaxers were made to reduce those results. In relaxers today, chemicals a lot less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While my friends focused on having the latest fashionable clothing and shoes throughout elementary school and middle school, I was more concerned about looking like my friends that had straight or curly hair.
