This summary analyzes the cinematography, editing, and sound used in the opening scene of a crime film:
The opening scene establishes the main character as a prisoner through the use of shadows, close-ups, and shots that emphasize his impatience. When he is released, the lighting changes to signify his newfound freedom. The editing cuts quickly between shots to keep the audience engaged as the character searches aggressively for something. Non-diegetic music and diegetic sounds are used to build tension throughout the scene as the character's motives and next actions remain unclear, until he pulls a gun on someone in an office at the end. Overall the techniques analyzed create a dark, tense atmosphere and imply that the film will involve
2. • In the opening an extreme close up of the actors chest is used this prevents the audience from seeing the actors face this
creates an enigma code as the audience are wondering who the man is. A birds eye view from the top of the prison cell is
then used and we can see Dwayne Johnson walking up and down his cell, this tells the audience that the character is
becoming impatient. The camera then zooms onto a tattoo on the arms of the character this implies the tattoo symbolises
something important and will probably feature later on in the film. An over the shoulder shot of a picture on the wall is used,
this confirms to the audience that the character is looking at the picture. Shot reverse shot is the used whilst the character is
looking at picture this is so the audience can see the effect that looking at the picture has on the prisoner; the extreme close
up of the prisoner allows the audience to see his facial expression, and they can gather that the pictures bring anger to him.
However when he takes the photo off the wall another extreme close up of the prisoners eyes are used and the audience
can see that the photo know brings emotion to the him and he looks like he's lost something important to, him the audience
may infer that something bad has happened to the man in the photo which could explain why he is angry and he is eager to
get out of prison to get revenge on whoever it was who done something to the man in the picture. When the prisoner walks
under the warden a low angle shot is used to establish the power that the warden has over the prisoner. When the warden
is talking to the prisoner an over the shoulder shot over the prisoners shoulder is used but the warden is out of focus, this
shows the audience that the prisoners has no interest in what the warden has to say he just wants to be released. As the
character is leaving the prison a pov shot is used so the audience can see what the prisoner can see and realise how close he
is to being released. When the character leaves the prison a low angled shot is used to show how invincible the man feels
now that he is out of prison. As the man is running after being let out of prison a wide shot is used to emphasise how
isolated the man is as nothing is near the prison; however it also shows that the ex convict is relishing freedom. When the
character enters the scrapyard a tracking shot is used to show the audience that the man knows what he's looking for but
there its not so easy to find. When the character enters the office a pov shot is used to show the audience that he is looking
for someone in particular, then the camera cut to his face and the audience can see the expression of anger on his face and
they can assume he is about to do something bad. When the criminal pulls out the gun the camera zooms into the gun
however the gun is out of focus and the criminals face is in focus so we can see the rage in his facial expression as he has
seen someone who the audience assume has done something to the criminal in the past.

4. In the opening scene the lighting is dark as the setting is a prison, however there is limited light
coming into the criminals prison cell, this is effective as we never get to see all of the prisoners
face as some part of it is always covered by shadow which suggest to the audience that this man
has a dark side to him. The shadowy setting creates a sinister atmosphere which shows the
audience that this is a man that should be feared. When the camera shows all the prison cells the
prison cell with the main character in it has the brightest shine coming out of it, this shows to the
audience that this is the one they should focus on. When the warden is having a conversation
with the prisoner the pitch black background with the prisoner in view gives the prisoner an evil
look to him. When the prisoner leaves the prison the lighting is very contrasting to the first scene
as he is now outside in the daylight, this puts emphasis on the fact that he is now free and is not
locked down.
5. The editing is fast which keeps the audience engaged with the film and keeps them watching as
they cannot predict what will happen next.
When the prisoner is looking at a picture on his wall the picture starts of out of focus and the
character is in focus then the character becomes out of focus and the picture becomes in focus.
This is used to let the audience know what they should be looking at. . The audience can see how
eager the prisoner is as we see his feet walking and his moving quick and aggressively the camera
then cuts to the feet of the officers walking and they seem to be more calm and composed, this
implies to the audience that the character has bad intentions when he gets out of prison.
When the warden is speaking to the prisoner the camera cuts to the clock with the prisoner
looking at it in the foreground, the clock starts out of focus then comes into focus and the ticking
becomes louder and the sound of the warden talking is blocked all the audience can hear is him
mumbling with a loud ticking from the clock , this is used to show the audience that the prisoner
does not care what the warden has to say he just wants to get out of prison.
6. This film is an action, crime film. The audience can tell that this film is a crime film as
the setting in the opening scene is a prison and prisons are a common setting in crime
films. The audience can also infer that this is a crime film because when the man gets
in his car he pulls out a gun from the glove compartment.
At the end of the opening the criminal pulls out a gun in the office and kills one of the
office workers this shows the audience that the film will contain action.
7. The very first scene tense slow high pitch non diegetic music is used along with the diegetic
sound of the prisoners heavy breathing this puts the audience on edge as it looks like the
prisoner is going insane so they don’t know what to expect to happen, this music continues
and then the diegetic sound of the police officers boots and keys jingling creates even more
tension as the audience don’t know why the officers are walking towards the prisoner or
don’t know why the prisoner keeps walking up and down in his cell.
When he starts looking at the picture of him and another man non diegetic tribal music
starts to play which makes the audience think who is this man and why does the music start
to play when the man looks at the picture.
As the man throws away the card given to him by the warden loud quick tempo non-
diegetic. music starts to play, this gives the audience the impression that the man is on a
mission tod do something. The music fades out as the man enters the scrapyard and stops
when he finds the car he's looking for this makes the audience uneasy as they cant predict
what he’s going to do with the car. When he unveils the car from the sheet the music then
returns as he carries on his ‘mission’.
When the criminal enters the office sound effects are used to emphasise the sound of his
footsteps this make him seem like a more intimidating figure and when he finds the man
he’s looking the diegetic sound cuts out and there's a noise that creates tension as the
criminal pulls out the gun.
