6. What is the purpose of the rating system?
Movie ratings provide the audience with advance
information about the content of films to help them
determine what movies are appropriate for their young
children and at what age. Ratings are assigned by a Board
of parents who consider factors such as violence, sex,
language, drug use and other adult activities and assign a
rating they believe the majority of American parents would
give a film.
Do the ratings indicate if a movie is good or bad?No.
Audiences and film critics make these determinations. The
ratings are not intended to approve, disapprove or censor
any film. Rather, ratings imply offer guidance to parents as
to the level of content in a film.

8. A test screening is a preview screening of a movie or
television show before its general release in order to
gauge audience reaction. Preview audiences are
selected from a cross-section of the population, and are
usually asked to complete a questionnaire or provide
feedback in some form. Harold Lloyd is credited with
inventing the concept, having used it as early as 1928. Test
screenings have been recommended even for starting
filmmakers "even if a film festival is fast approaching”.
9. Focus groups are a research method used to gather
feedback and opinions from customers. Each person in
the group is encouraged to participate in a discussion
which is pre-planned by a researcher and is guided by
a facilitator. Focus groups are typically used to gauge
opinion and gather information from users about
products, services, and features before they have been
developed.
10. Critic (or "press") screenings are held for national and major
market critics well in advance of print and television
production-cycle deadlines, and are usually by invitation
only. This step may be omitted if a studio anticipates
negative critical reviews, or if a film is still being edited until
immediately before release.
11. When conducting my own audience research when I created my own film trailer I had
my own focus group full of yr. 12/13 student and asked them to fill in a questionnaire.
This aided me when conducting my audience research as it helped target my specific
audience and also make some editing changes.
When I resaved my audience feedback I reaves some mixed result but I look the negatives as
constructive criticism and changed my trailer for the better.
