The Film Industry
  { By Conor Fay
 The production section of the film industry is mainly about funding. This
means if someone has an idea for a film, they’d go looking for a production
company so they can have the funding to make the film.
 The production company uses their power as the funding of the film to
choose the casting and director of the film.
 They also get experts to look over the script to decide what will work and
what doesn't and change it accordingly to what they feel will help make the
        money back.
 They are also in charge of filming and editing the film until they feel that it
is ready for release. The production section is a massive part of the whole
industry and its work could take years to complete to a satisfactory
        standard.
 There are three main processes to production, the first is Pre-Production,
this step is about developing the script until they feel as though it is ready.
The second is the Production, where the actual filming is done and finally,
Post-Production where the film is edited until they feel as though it is
complete and ready to be sent to the distributors.

Production
 An example of a film, with zombie like creatures,
produced by a large production company is I Am
Legend. I Am Legend was produced by Warner
Bros. Pictures, who gave the film a massive budget
of $150,000,000, which enabled them to get the
desired props, locations, actors etc. so they could
get their money back. The film made a total of
        $585,349,010 worldwide ($77,211,321 on the
        opening night).
 A contradicting example is Dead Moon Rising by a
small film company called Anubis Digital Studios.
Their film had a budget much lower than I am
Legend of $50,000 so as you can imagine, it received
a much lower average rating than I Am Legend did.

Production Company
Examples
 The distributors have the important role of working out deals
with cinemas to show the film, as well as setting a date for the
opening night and length that it’ll be in the cinema for.
 They are also reliable for putting the film onto DVDs and Internet
sites such as Love Film; this is done about twelve weeks after it
has been taken out of the cinema.
 They also have another important role, creating the trailers. This
is important as people tend to judge whether they see a film or
not, based on the quality of their trailers.
 An example of film distribution Company is Screen Gems, the
distributors of the Resident Evil movie series since 2002.
If we were distributing our film, we’d probably
 Sell it to most major cinemas and have a DVD release near
Christmas as many people will be buying DVDs as gifts for
        friends and families
 We’d also sell to all major film watching websites as these are
becoming an increasingly popular way of viewing movies

Distribution
 The marketing section of the film industry is behind the main advertising such as
TV spots, posters and the Internet.
 The Internet is becoming an increasingly popular way of advertising for
marketing companies, they target social networking sites as they are viewed by
millions and would get a lot of publicity for the upcoming film.
 They are also in charge of interviewing cast members and creating other publicity
stunts to draw attention to the film.
 They also arrange permissions for companies to make spinoffs such as video
games and board games as well as other merchandise such as soundtracks and
         clothing.
 They are also in charge of the possibility of sequels. They are an important role as
they get the majority of the audience to watch the film as well as making money
with film related products such as toys and games.
If we were to market our film, we’d:
 Try and organise interviews with main cast members
 Have TV spots on major TV channels, for instance ITV or MTV as we want to
appeal to a wide age group (see target audience research). However, we would
have to show the TV spots later in the evening, due to the content of the film
 We’d possibly sell licencing to video game companies and clothing companies to
         advertise the film further

Marketing
From looking over my research I can see that I have
learnt a bit about how films are made, for instance
 Me and my group are essentially the film producers
as we have edited the story, chosen the cast. Also, we
will be filming and editing our piece.
 I have learnt that the distribution companies cant
change the film but they create the trailer so they
need to have a good knowledge of the film
 I also learnt that the marketing sector are mainly
behind the advertising of a film so they need to
know about the target audience so they know times
for TV spots and what memorabilia would suit the
       film
