Task 1
Hannah Richards
Clarity: Creating a factual writing product I think it is important for a company to make sure their product is clear for the audience to read and understand,
clarity should be thought about for all aspects of the product such as the text size, the font, the layout and the language. Clarity is important because it helps
the audience to be able to read it and understand it.
Conciseness: Using simpler words and less amounts of text can help to ensure that the target audience and the reader can understand and read the product
easily and understand what they are reading.
Accuracy: When creating a product like this that will be visible to the public and the target audience it is important for the information included in it to be
correct and accurate, including information that is not correct can cause major issues such as confusion with the audience when it comes to possibly buying
the product that the leaflet is advertising. Another issue when including incorrect information is that it can get the company or charity into a lot of trouble if
the correct information is found, possibly even legal issues depending on what the information is.
Avoiding Ambiguity: Ensuring that a product has been talked about using accurate information that can not be open to interpretation by the audience or rival
companies is important because the audience need to feel like they are investing in a trustworthy company who know what they are talking about and who
can deal with any problems with certainty.
Bias: When creating a piece of factual writing such as this leaflet it is important that the information included is not set out as an argument or that the text
shows signs of the writer incorporating their own ideas, views and opinions.
Avoiding being bias is hard depending on what the subject it is because it is hard to avoid using your own view and evidence to support your argument,
subjects such as smoking or healthy eating are the main subjects that include bias views because they are subjects that people can be easily for or against.
Register: Using the right language to address the target audience I think is important because it conveys to the audience what kind of company it is and
whether it suits them or not, for example if a company were attempting to target a young teenage audience they would use simple words and short words,
the use of slang would also be included because it helps the company connect with the audience on a friendly level. Whereas in formal writing the language
would consist of more technical terms and no slang words.
Evidencing or argument: It is important in factual writing to address to the audience about the different sides of the story or argument to ensure that they
can make their own opinion on the matter. This can be easily confused with being bias and forcing the writers views on the audience but it is different
because the writer is talking about both sides of the story to allow the reader to make up their own mind.
Referencing sources: When writing a formal piece of writing such as a informative leaflet it is important to reference where the writer gained his information
from, this includes information such as quotes, information that could be sourced from both books and the internet, companies who are giving out
information to the public they must include where they gained information from to avoid breaching copyright laws.
Legal constraints: Any writer has to be careful when writing factual documents because there are many laws surrounding journalism that can easily be
breached such as libel which is when a writer manipulates something else that was written to change the meaning of it, breaching legal constraints can lead
to serious consequences for the writer and the company.
Codes of practice: The codes of practice are a set of rules which ensure that people have a guideline to their job such as things they are allowed to do and
things they are not, codes of practice are important in legal matters as they can be looked back on if the writer comes into any legal situations.
Bolded text is used in the titles and subtitles of
the leaflet to catch the attention and the eye of
the target audience, it is also written in a
rounded and fun font to express the
friendliness of the company and again for the
target audience which is mainly families. They
have also used a bold colour to capture the
The yellow colouring which has been used in
attention of the audience, they have also
ensured that it is a calm and relaxing colour to the logo has been used throughout the leaflet
because the colour represents happiness and
make the audience feel welcomed.
gives the charity the friendly characteristic they
are aiming for.
I also think they have chosen this colour
because it is bright and eye catching and suits
the target audience.
In the text they have used bullet points to give
the reader short facts quickly, this could also be
suited to the younger target audience.

Throughout the leaflet they have included
images and photographs of the adoption dogs
which I think is a really good technique to
capture the interest and the hearts of the target
audience because they may feel sympathy for
the animals, I think that this works best on the
younger participants of
the audience.
Adding the logo to the leaflet helps the target
audience to recognise the company name and
logo so that it is recognisable in every day life,
the logo has been created using a bright colour
to catch the eye of the target audience and also
because it is easy to remember, they have also
used black which contrasts on the yellow to
make it easier to read and recognise.
Clarity: I think that the leaflet for the dogs trust charity both have advantages and disadvantages because they have not included many subtitles to help
the reader to find the section they particularly are looking for, I think that using subtitles helps the flow of a leaflet because it makes it easy for the
audience to find what they are looking for. Another disadvantage of this leaflet is the contact information, they have not made it clear on how the
audience can get in touch with the charity, although this leaflet has a lot of disadvantages it is balanced out with more advantages such as the clarity of
the text, they have ensured that the text is black and written in a simple serif font so that it is clear for the audience to read and they have also placed it
on a background which is a brighter pale colour which also helps for the audience to be able to read it, another positive is the use bullet points because it
makes it easy for the reader to quickly read them and take in the important information. The last advantages is the clarity of the subject because they
have used a long but small subheading which is written in a bright colour to let the audience know what the subject of the article is.
Conciseness: I think that this leaflet for the dogs trust has focussed on their target audience which is mainly families with children and ensured that the
information they have given in the leaflet does not include too many technical terms and also they have used short sentences and bullet points to get
across the important information using the minimal amount of words needed in order to help the younger members of the audience be able to read the
text quickly and easily.
Accuracy: In this leaflet I think that they have included correct and accurate information because it can be easily researched through the internet to
ensure that it is correct, I also think that they have included correct information because the subject of the leaflet is about the health of older dogs which
is quite serious.
Avoiding Ambiguity: I think that after reading through the leaflet for the dogs trust charity I can clearly see that they are a trustworthy charity who
provide certain and correct information to their audience because of the way they have written the information, they have given set prices to the
audience instead of estimates and also ensured that they have included a lot of information on each of the separate subjects which shows again that
they understand the subject.
Bias: I think that this leaflet has not used bias views in a big way because the subject is not something that can be argued for or against, although they
have used language to convince the audience that the types of treatment they offer are the best and that their older dogs will probably need the
treatment, overall I don’t think the writer has used their bias view to support the facts and information used in the leaflet.
Register: After looking at the leaflet I have found that the leaflet has used both formal and informal language to connect to the family target audience
that is base around both adults and children, they have mainly used formal language because it is a factual piece of writing based on a serious subject but
parts have included shortened words to suit the younger members of the audience.
Evidencing or argument: I have read through the dogs trust leaflet and have found that they have not used any arguments because the subject does not
require any arguments or 2 different opinions.
Referencing sources: This leaflet for the dogs trust have not referenced any of the information they have included in their leaflet because they have not
included any outsourced information so they do not have to, the reason they do not need to reference is because all the information they have written is
information of their own and they have also not included any quotes.
They have used bold text
for the headings to
ensure that passengers
understand what the
leaflet is about and also
so it catches their eye.
The company have also
ensured that the colours
contrast one another so
that it is clear and easy
to read.
The heading is
surrounded by the
colour red which is
bright to attract the
attention of the
passengers and also to
resemble danger or
importance.

Bright and clear illustrations have
been included in the leaflet in order
to make it clear and
understandable to any generation
of passenger what it is they have to
do, the illustrations show a step by
step guide of how each action
should be carried out to avoid
mistakes.

Arrow symbols and cross symbols
have been added to make sure that
the instructions are clear n what to
do and what not to do again to
avoid mistakes.
Clarity: The content of this product is very clear and it has to be considering the subject of it, the illustrations are set out clearly in a step by step format
although they do not include text because it is important for passengers to be able to look at the images quickly and act fast, the product also includes
clear text and headings which are bold and contrast with the background colours to ensure that they are clear and easy to read.
Conciseness: This instruction leaflet does not include a large amount of text because the instructions are set out in illustrations and need to be looked at
briefly in order to perform the instructions quickly, they have however used text for the titles, they have used the minimum amount of text to ensure
that readers do not take wasted time to read it.
Accuracy: In this leaflet I think that they have included accurate and correct information to ensure the safety of the passengers and to ensure that they
do no encounter any legal situations, the information also has to be accurate on this type of product because it is based on a serious subject.
Avoiding Ambiguity: This factual instruction leaflet includes a lot of illustrative information but all of this information is correct and detailed, this shows
that the product and the information content can be trusted by the reader, also the company have shown that they know what they are writing about as
they have used detailed illustrations and also illustrations stating what the reader should not do in case of an emergency.
Bias: Because of the subject of this instruction leaflet they cannot include bias information in any of the content as the instructions are set in a specific
way.
Register: Although there is not text content included in this leaflet they have still used a clear and simple register using the illustrations to help give
across the message to the audience focusing on the majority aged audience which are adults and young adults although they have also ensured that the
content and register can be understood by younger and older ages.
Evidencing or argument: There is no need to evidence and argument in this type of leaflet because it is an instruction leaflet which does not involve an
argument or two sides of a story.
Referencing sources: Again this leaflet does not need to reference any of the information or content they have included because it is all of their own and
not taken from other sources, also there would be no reason to reference a source if there were any again because of the subject of the product.
Legal constraints: The content of this leaflet has not breached any legal constrains purely because of the subject is is based around and also because they
have not used a large amount of text that could be used as evidence or support any legal issues.
The illustrations also do not come under any legal constraints because they have not breached any copyright issues.
Codes of practice: The writer has followed and kept within the codes of practice because they have not been bias, included incorrect information and
have also not breeched any copyright laws which are all important aspects of the codes of practice.
They have also followed the codes of practice because they have focussed on the target audience and focussed on what they need to be informed of.
The title of the article has been set
out in a big bold font to help catch
the attention of fans and the target
audience, the title is also written in
a short sentence to put across the
subject of the article quickly and
clearly.

A large image has been used again
to quickly and clearly show the
audience what the article is about
and also to catch the eye of fans.
They have also added a caption
below it to tell the audience who is
in the photograph and what is
happening.

The writer has used bolder text for the more important parts
of the information so that the audience will be drawn to
reading these parts first and encourage them to want to read
more of the article.
There parts of information are also written in short sentences
so that the audience can read it quickly and understand the
subject clearly.

At the side of the main article the
website have also added a “related
stories” list which helps to connect
to the audience on a friendly level
because it shows that the company
understand and care about the
audiences interests depending on
what they are reading.
Clarity: I think that both the writer and the website have set out the article and the overall page very clearly to ensure that the target audinece can read
and understand the article and read through it quickly, the clarity aspect has been used in many places such as the layout, the language and the subject
overall.
They have made the layout very clear showing where each different section is by using different colours, fonts or spacing, the language is very simple and
written in good English to help the target audience or the reader to understand clearly what the information in the article is.
Conciseness: Although there is a large amount of text used in this article they have kept most parts short and simple in order to address the message and
subject of the article to the audience quickly, they have done this in the article title and also in the bold parts throughout the article to address the
important parts of information.
Accuracy: The information used in this article is very accurate because it is an interview in which the interviewee is giving all the answers and
information, they have also included accurate information in other places as well such as the caption of the photograph and the article title.
Avoiding Ambiguity: This article is a good example for accuracy and trustworthy writing because it is set out as an interview with information given by
Steven Moffat, the writer and the website can be trusted because it is a brand that is well known and have been trusted for a while, the website also
shows that the company and written understand the subject by adding related stories to the side of the main article.
Bias: There again is no bias views or information involved in the content of this article because ll of the information given is correct and is not based
around an argument or a subject that has two sides.
Register: I think that the writer and the website have kept in mind the target audience of the fans that may be reading this article by adding in a
photograph which is possibly an exclusive photograph that can only be found on the article website, they have also kept the target audience in mind
whilst writing because they have used shortened words in order to appeal to the younger generation of the audience.
Evidencing or argument: There is no need to evidence and argument in this type of factual writing product because it is an interviewers article based on a
subject that does not involve an argument or two sides of a story.
Referencing sources: Again because of the subject and the type of product this example is, it does not need to reference anything because the
information has not been out sourced and it is an exclusive interview so only this company can publish it. However they have mentioned that Steven
Moffat has quoted throughout the interview.
Legal constraints: I understand that journalism can be the main practice in which legal constraints are an issue because of sourcing and manipulation, In
this article the writer nor the company have encountered any legal barriers because they have followed the journalistic rules and not changed the quotes
or taken information from any other sources.
Codes of practice: After reading through the article and researching the journalism codes of practice I can see that this writer has followed the guidelines
and stayed within the codes of practice because they have not gone against any such as manipulating images used or quotes and information used and
stated by the interviewee.
Clarity: I think that both the writer and the website have set out the article and the overall page very clearly to ensure that the target audinece can read
and understand the article and read through it quickly, the clarity aspect has been used in many places such as the layout, the language and the subject

subject of the article to the audience quickly, they have done this in the article title and also in the bold parts throughout the article to address the
important parts of information.

Task 1

  • 2. Clarity: Creating a factual writing product I think it is important for a company to make sure their product is clear for the audience to read and understand, clarity should be thought about for all aspects of the product such as the text size, the font, the layout and the language. Clarity is important because it helps the audience to be able to read it and understand it. Conciseness: Using simpler words and less amounts of text can help to ensure that the target audience and the reader can understand and read the product easily and understand what they are reading. Accuracy: When creating a product like this that will be visible to the public and the target audience it is important for the information included in it to be correct and accurate, including information that is not correct can cause major issues such as confusion with the audience when it comes to possibly buying the product that the leaflet is advertising. Another issue when including incorrect information is that it can get the company or charity into a lot of trouble if the correct information is found, possibly even legal issues depending on what the information is. Avoiding Ambiguity: Ensuring that a product has been talked about using accurate information that can not be open to interpretation by the audience or rival companies is important because the audience need to feel like they are investing in a trustworthy company who know what they are talking about and who can deal with any problems with certainty. Bias: When creating a piece of factual writing such as this leaflet it is important that the information included is not set out as an argument or that the text shows signs of the writer incorporating their own ideas, views and opinions. Avoiding being bias is hard depending on what the subject it is because it is hard to avoid using your own view and evidence to support your argument, subjects such as smoking or healthy eating are the main subjects that include bias views because they are subjects that people can be easily for or against. Register: Using the right language to address the target audience I think is important because it conveys to the audience what kind of company it is and whether it suits them or not, for example if a company were attempting to target a young teenage audience they would use simple words and short words, the use of slang would also be included because it helps the company connect with the audience on a friendly level. Whereas in formal writing the language would consist of more technical terms and no slang words. Evidencing or argument: It is important in factual writing to address to the audience about the different sides of the story or argument to ensure that they can make their own opinion on the matter. This can be easily confused with being bias and forcing the writers views on the audience but it is different because the writer is talking about both sides of the story to allow the reader to make up their own mind. Referencing sources: When writing a formal piece of writing such as a informative leaflet it is important to reference where the writer gained his information from, this includes information such as quotes, information that could be sourced from both books and the internet, companies who are giving out information to the public they must include where they gained information from to avoid breaching copyright laws. Legal constraints: Any writer has to be careful when writing factual documents because there are many laws surrounding journalism that can easily be breached such as libel which is when a writer manipulates something else that was written to change the meaning of it, breaching legal constraints can lead to serious consequences for the writer and the company. Codes of practice: The codes of practice are a set of rules which ensure that people have a guideline to their job such as things they are allowed to do and things they are not, codes of practice are important in legal matters as they can be looked back on if the writer comes into any legal situations.
  • 3. Bolded text is used in the titles and subtitles of the leaflet to catch the attention and the eye of the target audience, it is also written in a rounded and fun font to express the friendliness of the company and again for the target audience which is mainly families. They have also used a bold colour to capture the The yellow colouring which has been used in attention of the audience, they have also ensured that it is a calm and relaxing colour to the logo has been used throughout the leaflet because the colour represents happiness and make the audience feel welcomed. gives the charity the friendly characteristic they are aiming for. I also think they have chosen this colour because it is bright and eye catching and suits the target audience. In the text they have used bullet points to give the reader short facts quickly, this could also be suited to the younger target audience. Throughout the leaflet they have included images and photographs of the adoption dogs which I think is a really good technique to capture the interest and the hearts of the target audience because they may feel sympathy for the animals, I think that this works best on the younger participants of the audience. Adding the logo to the leaflet helps the target audience to recognise the company name and logo so that it is recognisable in every day life, the logo has been created using a bright colour to catch the eye of the target audience and also because it is easy to remember, they have also used black which contrasts on the yellow to make it easier to read and recognise.
  • 4. Clarity: I think that the leaflet for the dogs trust charity both have advantages and disadvantages because they have not included many subtitles to help the reader to find the section they particularly are looking for, I think that using subtitles helps the flow of a leaflet because it makes it easy for the audience to find what they are looking for. Another disadvantage of this leaflet is the contact information, they have not made it clear on how the audience can get in touch with the charity, although this leaflet has a lot of disadvantages it is balanced out with more advantages such as the clarity of the text, they have ensured that the text is black and written in a simple serif font so that it is clear for the audience to read and they have also placed it on a background which is a brighter pale colour which also helps for the audience to be able to read it, another positive is the use bullet points because it makes it easy for the reader to quickly read them and take in the important information. The last advantages is the clarity of the subject because they have used a long but small subheading which is written in a bright colour to let the audience know what the subject of the article is. Conciseness: I think that this leaflet for the dogs trust has focussed on their target audience which is mainly families with children and ensured that the information they have given in the leaflet does not include too many technical terms and also they have used short sentences and bullet points to get across the important information using the minimal amount of words needed in order to help the younger members of the audience be able to read the text quickly and easily. Accuracy: In this leaflet I think that they have included correct and accurate information because it can be easily researched through the internet to ensure that it is correct, I also think that they have included correct information because the subject of the leaflet is about the health of older dogs which is quite serious. Avoiding Ambiguity: I think that after reading through the leaflet for the dogs trust charity I can clearly see that they are a trustworthy charity who provide certain and correct information to their audience because of the way they have written the information, they have given set prices to the audience instead of estimates and also ensured that they have included a lot of information on each of the separate subjects which shows again that they understand the subject. Bias: I think that this leaflet has not used bias views in a big way because the subject is not something that can be argued for or against, although they have used language to convince the audience that the types of treatment they offer are the best and that their older dogs will probably need the treatment, overall I don’t think the writer has used their bias view to support the facts and information used in the leaflet. Register: After looking at the leaflet I have found that the leaflet has used both formal and informal language to connect to the family target audience that is base around both adults and children, they have mainly used formal language because it is a factual piece of writing based on a serious subject but parts have included shortened words to suit the younger members of the audience. Evidencing or argument: I have read through the dogs trust leaflet and have found that they have not used any arguments because the subject does not require any arguments or 2 different opinions. Referencing sources: This leaflet for the dogs trust have not referenced any of the information they have included in their leaflet because they have not included any outsourced information so they do not have to, the reason they do not need to reference is because all the information they have written is information of their own and they have also not included any quotes.
  • 5. They have used bold text for the headings to ensure that passengers understand what the leaflet is about and also so it catches their eye. The company have also ensured that the colours contrast one another so that it is clear and easy to read. The heading is surrounded by the colour red which is bright to attract the attention of the passengers and also to resemble danger or importance. Bright and clear illustrations have been included in the leaflet in order to make it clear and understandable to any generation of passenger what it is they have to do, the illustrations show a step by step guide of how each action should be carried out to avoid mistakes. Arrow symbols and cross symbols have been added to make sure that the instructions are clear n what to do and what not to do again to avoid mistakes.
  • 6. Clarity: The content of this product is very clear and it has to be considering the subject of it, the illustrations are set out clearly in a step by step format although they do not include text because it is important for passengers to be able to look at the images quickly and act fast, the product also includes clear text and headings which are bold and contrast with the background colours to ensure that they are clear and easy to read. Conciseness: This instruction leaflet does not include a large amount of text because the instructions are set out in illustrations and need to be looked at briefly in order to perform the instructions quickly, they have however used text for the titles, they have used the minimum amount of text to ensure that readers do not take wasted time to read it. Accuracy: In this leaflet I think that they have included accurate and correct information to ensure the safety of the passengers and to ensure that they do no encounter any legal situations, the information also has to be accurate on this type of product because it is based on a serious subject. Avoiding Ambiguity: This factual instruction leaflet includes a lot of illustrative information but all of this information is correct and detailed, this shows that the product and the information content can be trusted by the reader, also the company have shown that they know what they are writing about as they have used detailed illustrations and also illustrations stating what the reader should not do in case of an emergency. Bias: Because of the subject of this instruction leaflet they cannot include bias information in any of the content as the instructions are set in a specific way. Register: Although there is not text content included in this leaflet they have still used a clear and simple register using the illustrations to help give across the message to the audience focusing on the majority aged audience which are adults and young adults although they have also ensured that the content and register can be understood by younger and older ages. Evidencing or argument: There is no need to evidence and argument in this type of leaflet because it is an instruction leaflet which does not involve an argument or two sides of a story. Referencing sources: Again this leaflet does not need to reference any of the information or content they have included because it is all of their own and not taken from other sources, also there would be no reason to reference a source if there were any again because of the subject of the product. Legal constraints: The content of this leaflet has not breached any legal constrains purely because of the subject is is based around and also because they have not used a large amount of text that could be used as evidence or support any legal issues. The illustrations also do not come under any legal constraints because they have not breached any copyright issues. Codes of practice: The writer has followed and kept within the codes of practice because they have not been bias, included incorrect information and have also not breeched any copyright laws which are all important aspects of the codes of practice. They have also followed the codes of practice because they have focussed on the target audience and focussed on what they need to be informed of.
  • 7. The title of the article has been set out in a big bold font to help catch the attention of fans and the target audience, the title is also written in a short sentence to put across the subject of the article quickly and clearly. A large image has been used again to quickly and clearly show the audience what the article is about and also to catch the eye of fans. They have also added a caption below it to tell the audience who is in the photograph and what is happening. The writer has used bolder text for the more important parts of the information so that the audience will be drawn to reading these parts first and encourage them to want to read more of the article. There parts of information are also written in short sentences so that the audience can read it quickly and understand the subject clearly. At the side of the main article the website have also added a “related stories” list which helps to connect to the audience on a friendly level because it shows that the company understand and care about the audiences interests depending on what they are reading.
  • 8. Clarity: I think that both the writer and the website have set out the article and the overall page very clearly to ensure that the target audinece can read and understand the article and read through it quickly, the clarity aspect has been used in many places such as the layout, the language and the subject overall. They have made the layout very clear showing where each different section is by using different colours, fonts or spacing, the language is very simple and written in good English to help the target audience or the reader to understand clearly what the information in the article is. Conciseness: Although there is a large amount of text used in this article they have kept most parts short and simple in order to address the message and subject of the article to the audience quickly, they have done this in the article title and also in the bold parts throughout the article to address the important parts of information. Accuracy: The information used in this article is very accurate because it is an interview in which the interviewee is giving all the answers and information, they have also included accurate information in other places as well such as the caption of the photograph and the article title. Avoiding Ambiguity: This article is a good example for accuracy and trustworthy writing because it is set out as an interview with information given by Steven Moffat, the writer and the website can be trusted because it is a brand that is well known and have been trusted for a while, the website also shows that the company and written understand the subject by adding related stories to the side of the main article. Bias: There again is no bias views or information involved in the content of this article because ll of the information given is correct and is not based around an argument or a subject that has two sides. Register: I think that the writer and the website have kept in mind the target audience of the fans that may be reading this article by adding in a photograph which is possibly an exclusive photograph that can only be found on the article website, they have also kept the target audience in mind whilst writing because they have used shortened words in order to appeal to the younger generation of the audience. Evidencing or argument: There is no need to evidence and argument in this type of factual writing product because it is an interviewers article based on a subject that does not involve an argument or two sides of a story. Referencing sources: Again because of the subject and the type of product this example is, it does not need to reference anything because the information has not been out sourced and it is an exclusive interview so only this company can publish it. However they have mentioned that Steven Moffat has quoted throughout the interview. Legal constraints: I understand that journalism can be the main practice in which legal constraints are an issue because of sourcing and manipulation, In this article the writer nor the company have encountered any legal barriers because they have followed the journalistic rules and not changed the quotes or taken information from any other sources. Codes of practice: After reading through the article and researching the journalism codes of practice I can see that this writer has followed the guidelines and stayed within the codes of practice because they have not gone against any such as manipulating images used or quotes and information used and stated by the interviewee.
