2. To create my flat plans for my newspaper front cover I have researched and gathered examples
of existing newspaper covers, I researched a range of different layouts to help me to decide
which kind of layout I want to interpret and chose two that were very different to evaluate and
compare.
This first layout is one that I am planning to
use because it is simple and modern which
suits the target audience and it will be easy
for me to layout, the image has been
placed in the middle of the page to attract
the eye and fans, the publication have also
used a big and bold font for the headline to
attract attention to the story.
This layout is a bit more simple and clean
compared to the first layout because the
story has not been included on the
front, they have only included the
important information on the front to let
the reader understand what the story
inside is about.
They have also used a large sized and bold
font for this cover to convey the
importance of the story and to attract the
attention of the target audience.
They have added in advertisements and
other information about other stories and
content to the front cover to bulk up the
white space.
This publication have not added any more
content to the front cover to bulk it up due
to the seriousness of the main story which
helps to support the clean and tidy theme.
The images used on each of the
publications are very different whilst the
first publication have used modern boxed
images the second publication have used
cut out images and larger images.

For my first layout I have decided to research into various different
newspaper covers in imitate the way they have set out the front cover
keeping in mind the target audience for my product.
For this layout I have kept in mind the audience throughout the designing
because I have laid it out to ensure that it flows well and the reader can
follow it easily and read it quickly.
I have used candid photographs because I have noticed that fans like candid
photographs the best.
The fonts I have used for the text content are modern which suits the mature
and young adult audience along with the masthead fonts.

I have decided to use a more simple layout for the same newspaper cover
because I also shows the product more clearly and helps the reader and the
target audience to be able to read the story easily and clearly follow it.
I have also taken one of the images out of this layout because it allows me to
add in more text and also fits in with the target audience which is a more
mature teenage and young adult audience.
I have also chosen more modern and photo shoot based photographs in
order to attract the mature audience and they are also of a better quality
which makes the newspaper look better.
The fonts I have found for the text content is very modern but also fun to suit
the target audience, this also works with the masthead fonts because they
are modern but also fun.
7. I started my broadsheet by creating a 3 by 3 grid
which created a simple grid for me to place the
content that I wanted to include.
I then decided that I wanted to use a website to
get an interesting font for the masthead so I used
DaFont which helped me to gain this font which
looked different and interesting which I think
resembles the punk culture very well.
After researching into a range of newspaper
cover examples I decided that the best place for
the masthead was directly at the top of the page.
I then decided to add an image I had found on
the internet that helped support the quality of
the product and also the subject of the story.
Again I placed the image in the way that most of
the other newspaper examples had placed theirs
which was in the middle of the page, I think this
is a good layout because it draws attention to the
image straight away because it is in the centre.
It also allows me to wrap my other content
around the image.
8. I added in the text which I wrapped around the
image which was my initial plan for this layout.
I wrapped the text around the side and around
the bottom of the image.
I think this works well because it is still readable
and it flows clear enough for the target audience
and the reader to be able to look at the
information.
Afterwards I added in the headline of the
newspaper story which was ‘vicious found
dead’, I used this title because it was quick and
catchy and was similar to how other newspapers
wrote their titles which gets the message and
the subject of the story to the audience quickly.
I have also placed it here because I think it works
best and it is written in a bold font to draw
attention to it.
9. I then added in the date line and the issue
number which is what most newspapers include
on the front page, I also added an advert in the
bottom right hand corner to fill up the spare
white space, I then added another story to the
side of the main story again to use up the spare
white space and make the cover look more
interesting.
Overall I am happy with the final result of my
first idea because of how the different aspects
turned out and how I have managed to interpret
the different examples of newspaper covers.
I like that they layout suits the target audience
because it is very clean and modern making it
easy for the audience to understand and follow.
I also like the fonts I have used because it
represents the genre very well and suits the
target audience.
10. I first started with a simple three by three grid to
allow me to be able to be able to create the
design easily within a simple grid, I started by
adding in the content such as the side image and
the title of the publication, I changed the
content to black and white to show the age of
the publication but also added a bit of colour to
appeal to the modern teenage audience.
I then added a second image to make the cover
look more interesting, I also made sure that I had
cut the images out to look like magazine
clippings which fits well with the story and the
punk genre, I also did this with the subtitles of
the two separate stories.
The text content has been added to the side of
the page under the first image which I think fits
well and ties in with the rest of the content and
makes the layout look modern.
11. Afterwards I added in the second part of text to
the separate story which again fits in with the
modern theme and ties in well with the rest of
the content.
I think the rest of the text makes the layout look
full and it fills up the spare white space, it also
makes the cover look busy and interesting which
again fits in with the punk genre.
Overall I am happy with the final product
because it reflects the punk genre very well and
looks like the newspapers I had researched, I also
like how the images and the way I have placed
the content reflects the genre too. I have also
added in the dateline and the issue number and
also a note at the bottom of the page which tells
the reader where the story continues.
12. Font: The font I have chosen for the main text is just a simple
times new roman font because it is clear and easy to read
and it makes the tabloid cover look professional , I have also
used the new times roman font for the headings to help it tie
in together and it also makes it look consistent.
The title of the publication is written in a messier and
handwritten font to reflect the characteristics of the genre
and the idols within the genre.
Images: I have only used one big image for the main story to
ensure that the audience know what the story is based
around, the image is black and white and of a low quality to
fit in with the age of the tabloid and the event. I have also
used a tour poster image at the bottom of the page to
advertise and fill in the spare white space.
Layout: The layout of the finished tabloid cover is very
simple and modern to make the publication look
professional and it also helps the audience to be able to
follow the text easily, it also helps to separate the different
stories from the other content.
Overall: Overall I think that the finished design has worked
out well and looks similar to the examples I researched into
before, I am happy with a number of aspects including the
layout.
Developments: To develop my work I think I could have
added more content such as more adverts and boxes
containing information about what else is in the publication.
13. Font: I have used a range of different fonts for this tabloid
cover because of the theme I wanted to shows, I have used
magazine letter clippings for the subheadings to reflect the
‘takeover’ aspect of the theme and I have also used a simple
times new roman font for the main text again because it is
clear and easy to read.
Images: For these images I have used a cut out magazine
clipping effect again to represent the ‘takeover’ aspect and
reflect the untidy and messy characteristic of the punk
genre.
I have used two images as I have written about two stories
which give the most important information on the cover and
continues inside which is stated at the bottom of the cover
page.
Layout: Again the layout is very clear and flows well to allow
the audience to be able to read the content easily and
quickly, the layout also seperates
Overall: Overall I think that the finished design has worked
out well and looks similar to the examples I researched into
before, I am happy with a number of aspects including the
layout.

added more content such as more adverts and boxes
