Generation of Ideas for Ancillary Product 2) –
Poster
2. Theme Ideas
• Dark Theme: This theme connotes danger and despair. I believe this fits in
with the dangerous aspects from within the Soap Opera multi stranded
narrative that we are trying to create within our show. Furthermore, dark
themes are becoming increasingly popular within our genre, which will
attract the attention of our younger target audience.
• Romantic Theme: Romance is very popular in Soap Operas and can appeal
to multiple audiences. This would encourage all audiences to view the
soap opera, as everyone aspires to be in a loving relationship, which will
be represented in the poster.
• Mystery: It is a common theme used in Soap Opera to attract the
attention of the audience. It successfully draws the attention in as it
makes the audience want to find out more secrets that could be exposed
in the episode.
3. Tagline
• “Trapped!”: This expresses how everyone is trapped. The girl
is trapped physically, the husband and wife are both trapped
in a loveless relationship and the ‘villain’ (Propp) is trapped in
his evil ways.
• “Where is she?”: This entices the audience as they will also
want to find out where the little girl is, and it could express
where the characters mind sets are, for example the husband
could be wondering where his daughter is and where his wife
is.
• “Will they ever find her?”: This again lures the audience in as
it is asking them the question. This will make them want to
watch the show because of the attracting narrative.
4. Image Ideas
• Little girl looking scared and vulnerable, with the bad
guys hand on her face: this highlights the overriding
narrative and it really dramatizes the danger that
the girl is in. This is similar to The Apparition poster.
• Girl in front and the parents behind facing opposite directions. This
connotes that their is a domestic issue and that the little girl has been
caught in the middle of it. Also the parents looking in opposite directions
‘signify’ (De Saussure)that their relationship is frayed and that the girl is
the only thing holding them together.
• Mother with bad guy and husband standing beside her, whilst she holds
the girl: This connotes that the girl is the innocent bystander. It also
connotes that the mother is the one that started the drama.
5. Other
• Synergy with Social Media: This will help create multiple
advertising opportunities for the Soap Opera. I will ensure
that there is a hashtag which will be used on both Facebook
and Twitter.
• Synergy with my magazine: I will be using synergy with the
magazine because this will ensure that readers can tell
where they can go to get further information on the Soap
Opera through a print media product.
• Point of Call information: The point of call ‘informs’ (Katz)
the viewer when the text will be on and where they can go
to watch it. This is why it is essential to a poster. Especially
for a new Soap Opera which has not yet made a name for
itself.
6. Mind Map - Conclusion
• What you need to do next: Next I will need to take my desired pictures. This is to ensure
that the images for my poster are the exact images that I want.
• What you’ll need to organise/arrange: I will need to organise props for when I take the
pictures, for example I will need to borrow a DSLR camera from Mr. Crafts’ to ensure that
the images are of a good quality. I will also Source and Download a suitable font style, this
is to ensure that my poster looks realistic and professional.
• What software you will use to create the product and Why?: In order to create a good
quality poster I will be using Adobe Photoshop CS5. This will ensure that the poster looks
professional and realistic, whilst making it easier for me as I have previous experience
using Adobe Photoshop CS5.
