❑ List of 100 smart cities by September 2015
The Union Government is set to announce the names of urban centres that would figure in the list of
100 smart cities by September 2015 . Initially, only 20 cities will be taken up on priority. These 20 cities
will be selected on certain parameters, which have already been communicated to the cities.
❑ Cabinet nod to 16 power projects
In an effort to boost power sector in Bihar, the state cabinet approved 16 schemes aimed at ensuring
electricity supply in rural areas, renovation and expansion of thermal power stations and better power
transmission network. Many of these schemes are sponsored by the centre, with the state government
sharing the cost of manpower engaged in those works. The cabinet also accepted in principle the
possible expenditure on the smart city scheme of the centre's urban development ministry.
❑ SPV's and not civic bodies to drive smart cities in MP
Smart city project will be driven not by Bhopal Municipal Corporation, but by a special purpose vehicle
(SPV), which will be a public limited company modeled around Delhi Metro Corporation and will be
launched under Companies Act. Most importantly, the smart city venture won't be solely government
venture, but will allow partial private stake holdings.
❑ Smart cities project to cover 35 percent of urban India
The Union Government released the list of 98 smart city nominees which, with a total population of 13
crore, account for 35 per cent of India’s urban population. Names of two cities — one from Jammu &
Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh each — are yet to be revealed. The metros with a population of over 50 lakh
each in smart cities list include Chennai, Greater Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Greater Mumbai. Other
important urban local bodies that have been included are the New Delhi Municipal Council,
Vishakhapatnam, Chandigarh, Surat, Kochi, Bhopal, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Bhubaneswar, Amritsar,
Jaipur, Allahabad and Lucknow. According to the Union Government, as many as 65 names on the list
are that of small- and medium- sized towns.

❑ Australia, India sign MoU to strengthen education cooperation
Australia and India agreed for a joint financial commitment of up to AUD 1 million to strengthen
educational cooperation between the two countries.. Australia also saw a great opportunity in the
technical education sphere as India is planning to build 100 smart cities.
❑ Tata Trusts signs MoU for smart villages.
Tata Trusts has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Government of Andhra Pradesh for
developing smart villages in Vijayawada. Tata Trusts will develop 264 villages in the region.

❑ Solar power thrust for Ludhiana
Ludhiana, which is already in a race for smart city project, will get a boost of solar power as the Union
Government has included the industrial capital of Punjab among 50 cities to be developed as solar cities.
❑ Nod to INR 1,770 crore civic budget
The general body of the Nashik Municipal Corporation approved, with corrections and suggestions, the
INR 1,769.97 crore budget presented by the civic administration for FY2015-16. Nashik being in the race
for the smart city tag, good roads were needed for which resurfacing of the colony roads should be done
and INR 100 crore should be provided for this.
