Ltd., 2015 1 Policy News  FSSAI to restrict junk food in schools and surroundings The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed restrictions on the sale of junk food such as chips, noodles, confectionery items and carbonated drinks in schools and areas within 50 meters. The regulator has come up with draft guidelines on availability of nutritious and wholesome food in schools in order to check junk food consumption pattern among children. According to the food regulator, school canteens should not be treated as commercial outlets to promote foods which are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS foods). Industry News  Maggi production to start within 2-3 weeks Maggi is all set to return to store shelves as Nestle cleared the tests mandated by the Bombay High Court. With this, the company will restart production of the snack in the next 2-3 weeks. The company had announced a voluntary recall of Maggi on June 5, 2015, while the FSSAI had banned its sale due to excessive levels of lead and mislabeling on the pack. However in August 2015, the ban was lifted by the Bombay High Court and the company was asked to get the samples tested before it starts selling the product. Nestle has now received results from all three laboratories, which covered 90 samples and had lead much below the permissible limits.  Gadre Marine Export targets domestic sale to double by FY2016 Gadre Marine Export will focus on the domestic retail market with a target to double its domestic sale by FY2016. It is one of the largest exporters and producers of packaged seafood in India and currently supplies processed and packaged seafood to more than 600 retailers across 20 cities. The company is targeting a domestic sales of INR 20 crore, up from 12 crore in FY2015, and to 500 tonne from 250 tonne in FY2015. The products are available currently at leading retailers across the country including Spencer's, Food Hall, Food World, Nature's Basket, Big Bazaar, Hyper City and Star Bazaar, among others.  Marco's Pizza to open 400 stores in 5 years Marco's Pizza, the US-based pizza chain, forayed into the Indian market by opening its first outlet in Vadodara. The company which entered India through the franchise route plans to open 400 stores in the next five years across the country. Ltd., 2015 2  Kerala Gender Park to launch 'Food on Wheels' Major Streets of Kerala will be soon dotted with 'food trucks', providing hygienic, healthy and delicious dishes, under the 'Food on Wheels' initiative. The initiative is drawn up by Gender Park, which is a state- owned autonomous institution and is envisaged to achieve food safety and women empowerment. Nearly 2,500 women entrepreneurs will be seen to serve high quality food at cheap prices through mobile food units, which will be stationed nearby colleges, schools and government offices. The programme will also extend loan benefits at nominal interest rates to the interested women. Investment News  IVFA to invest USD 100 - 150 million in food business India Value Fund Advisors (IVFA), a private equity firm, will invest between USD 100 - 150 million (around INR 640 - 970 crore) in food business over the next two years. The investment is being done as the food business will be one of the highest growing sectors in India over the next 20 years. It will be driven by rising disposable incomes, need for convenience and aspirational lifestyles. IVFA is seeking to back mid- size food businesses such as packaged food business, food services business and supply chain & ingredient business.  Ferrero Rocher to invest INR 367 crore in India Ferrero Rocher – the Italian chocolate maker – will invest INR 367 crore, which will be the biggest investment in this segment in India. The investment will be done to expand its production facility at Baramati, Maharashtra and strengthen its warehousing and distribution network.
