 We use body language to communicate our
personal feelings,emotions,attitudes etc.
 Either with or without spoken language.
 Body language includes
1)facial expressions
2)gestures
3)posture and
4)walking styles.
 The most prominent part used for sending non-
verbal symbols is the face.
 So it is the most powerful means of non-verbal
communication.
Facial expression Meaning
Raising the eye brows Disbelief
Biting of lips Uncertainity
Both the mouth and the eyes
open
Surprise/fear.
Arching the eyebrows Anger or seriousness
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Facial expressions reflect emotion, feelings and attitudes
 Another noticeable non-verbal symbol used
in communication is gestures.
 They are the very common and are the
natural movements of our body, specifically,
head, shoulders and hands.
GESTURE MEANING
The hands are active and rest
less:picking,biting nails,sucking fingers
Uneasiness and nervousness
rubbing of eyes The person is unsure or lying
patting someone encouraging
hands on hips Readiness and ability to do a job
• Descriptive

• Emphatic

• Suggestive

• Prompting

Body Posture, refers to the way we sit or stand.
If the person is resting his body weight on one leg looking up into the sky, it shows
unwillingness.
If the legs are straight and pressed against each other, it may mean that the person feels
uncomfortable.
If the person uses hand clamping the crossed leg, it shows the person has a fixed attitude
towards something.
It is general feeling that by carefully looking at the
eyes of a person, we will be able to talk about his
nature or character.
If there is no eye contact during communication if
may show lack of interest.
In the western cultures, looking into speaker’s eyes
generally communicates respect.
Four different zones are identified with regard to the space maintenance, namely
1) Intimate
2) personal
3) social and
