Propaganda In The Book 1984 By George Orwell
"War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength" (Orwell). This mantra was burned into the
minds of the citizens of Oceania, or future London, where Winston Smith, the protagonist, lives.
The citizens of Oceania are constantly being bombarded with propaganda in favor of Big Brother
and the Party, who leads and governs them, which brings the majority of them into complete
submission. In the book, 1984, George Orwell shows how technology is used by the Party to
monitor, brainwash, and provoke fear in the people of Oceania in order to control them. In Oceania,
every little thing everyone does is monitored at all times, which proves the saying, "Big Brother is
watching", which is hung up everywhere. This is done mainly through the telescreens, which are set
up in everyone's homes and are similar to televisions except for the fact that they can never be
completely turned off, and instead of just transmitting information, they also receive it by recording
your sound and movements. Winston ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The telescreens which are constantly going on are filled with propaganda geared toward infatuation
with the Party, and hating the enemy. Each day at Winston's workplace, a period of time called the
Two Minutes Hate is held, where everyone is shown a video which glorifies Big Brother and
denounces Goldstein, the enemy and rebel of the Party. Because it is burned in their minds, the
people are passionate about their hatred for Goldstein and love for Big Brother. It is clear how
enraged they are by Goldstein when it says, "Before the Hate had proceeded for thirty seconds,
uncontrollable exclamations of rage were breaking out from half the people in the room...In its
second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and
shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came

College Admissions Essay: Everything I Ever Needed
Everything I Ever Needed
I remember the rattling and squeaking of the bunk beds as we jumped around laughing. My room
was basic except the bunk beds that I found fun in many different ways from jumping off the top
into pillows to pretending the floor was lava with my siblings, those memories will never leave my
mind. With my brother, David Gaipo Junior, being ten years older than me it was hard to connect at
times, but I could look up to him and learn without him even knowing. One difference was that, my
brother and I had different mothers with that obstacle I only saw him every weekend if I felt lucky.
Having a big brother is every little boy's dream. To have someone to look up to and also just have a
great time with is unbeatable. My brother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
David has taught me how to overcome these obstacles and to become a man. Also, he has taught me
that life is not easy he has had his ups and downs and times where he did not know what he was
going to do. Seeing my brother go through the adversity he faced and to have a great career, a home,
and a woman he loves gives me the motivation and strength that drives me today. He showed his
true character by being there for his young brother and sister and not even doing it because he was
forced to, he did it because he loved us and wanted the best for us. Every time I see my brother he
succeeds at making me smile. He will crack the inappropriate joke or try and fight me like we are in
the Ultimate Fighting Championship league. I will always look up to my brother, I will never lose
my respect. Through thick and thin my brother has been there for me and I will always be there for
him. David gave me the guidance and will power to be who I truly am. From him I learn how to
overcome obstacles and how to succeed at life. I will take these lessons and apply them to my future
and everyday to make him proud of me. I will never let him down or ever give up on him just like
he never did for me. The man I am today was formed by the love and dedication of my big brother
David Gaipo Junior and I cannot thank him

The Importance Of Creative Games
"Happy birthday, kiddo," said my big brother Paul. My brother always had a tendency to smile, even
though he wasn't the most appealing, with crooked teeth, glasses, and black hair sticking out all
over. I opened the card, read the cute little message, (I'm forced to think it was some sort of pun, I
can't remember.) and the golden sheen of an American Express gift card did the first thing I decided
to do was hug my brother. Of course, what I did with this card was what I wanted to do since the last
time I was at my brother's house: get a new game, 'BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend'. And I did,
after waiting for the game to install, looking up character biographies, and figuring out how to
pronounce the character names. My first instinct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Honestly, I am so happy that there was a breather fight in between, between the characters
Hakumen, a warrior clad in white, and the Leader of the Six Heroes and Terumi, a man wearing an
orange and black cloak decorated with snake imagery, and my favorite character, due to his rather
despicable actions. Too bad it went by faster than a lightning bolt. In the second round, I had a
tougher time, but I knew what to do against the beast, so it evens out. What I did was a concept
called dominant strategy: Once you discover something that is good, you're always going to use that
thing. The strategy was press Jump, then A or B on the controller. Jump, A or B, Jump, A or B,
again, and again, and again. However, when his health meter was very low, the beast let out a giant
laser beam. The character that I was controlling was unfortunately defeated. I had the urge to throw
something. "OK, that was just one loss. No need to scream about it," said a voice in my head. And
so, after a day, and a nice warm shower, I decided to finish the job, and, thanks to indomitable spirit,
I won. Or, at least, for the second round. But the battle wasn't over yet. No breather this time. Just
right into the fight as Ragna. "And boy, is this going to be fun or what?" I asked myself, oozing with
sarcasm. "Ugh." I yelled, annoyed, as I get attacked by a series of flying swords. Lost again. "Grr!" I
screamed, angrier,

Personal Narrative Essay : The Best Days Of My Childhood
One of the best days of my childhood was the day my older brother rolled his sparkling new bike up
the driveway. I remember it fondly, it was a summers day and I sat on the front stoop of my small
little home with my mom watching my dad and brother unload the new bicycle from our family
minivan. Lime green hammerhead sharks wrapped around the cobalt blue aluminum framing and
silver hand breaks glittered in the sunlight. When my brother and I were kids, having a bike was a
gateway to freedom and more independence. I'd watch Kenneth race up and down the cracked
sidewalk on the silver Gremlin bike awaiting my turn to ride. My instincts to keep up with my big
brother would boil, I coveted that Gremlin and when I did get the chance to ride it, I felt brave.
Kenneth's new Hammerhead bike meant the Gremlin was finally mine, a hand me down that was
just out of reach for years. That evening we strapped on our helmets and raced down the sidewalks
together and followed my dad around the neighborhood. I remember peddling past the library,
stopping to get a donut at the supermarket, through parks and toward my tiny preschool, Evergreen
Christian. When I still lived in Alger Heights I was too young to understand the story of the
neighborhood and the social sciences involved in this community, so when my group chose this
neighborhood I was excited to learn more about the community I was raised in. I returned to the
neighborhood a few weeks ago and instead of exploring on my Gremlin

George Orwell And 1984 Book Comparison
I have started on my second book called "1984" and around 90 pages deep. For this reflection I am
doing a book comparison between my last book "How We Decide". Both books are totally different.
"How we Decide" shows the aspect of how the human mind makes choices. The author explained
how we decide from right to wrong and how this is triggered inside the mind. The book is classified
as non–fiction Psychology. There is no characters in the book besides the people that the author uses
in different studies. The author uses a group of people or he singles out a person to show an example
of how the brain works. However 1984 is political fiction and dystopian novel. I have never read
one before but watched the "Hunger Games" which is based off the

1984 Reflective Essay
The reading of 1984 shows that throughout our history man has sat and pondered the idea of what
our culture would look like if political control got out of hand. His book is written as a type of
warning and paints the picture of a dystopia. Where the government is the end all be all, with its
people having no say towards their own lives or laws that shape them. It reminded me of a modern
twist on a soviet dictatorship with the posters along the streets saying "big brother is watching you."
The cameras watching their every move, their thoughts and even matters of the heart can be
screened. This I found particularly unsettling. For I tried to put myself in Winston's shoes, imaging
that type of reality on myself. I feel as though I would be similar

1984 Doublethink Analysis
The Role of Doublethink in The Government of 1984 " War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance
is strength,". The following quote originates from the infamous novel, 1984 by George Orwell. The
significance of this popular quote was to display an example of the action of doublethink.
Doublethink is the act of having two contradictory thoughts at the same time and believing both are
true. Doublethink plays an influential role in the novel, 1984. The novel takes place in a super–state
by the name of Oceania which covers the entire continents of our America in reality. The main
character of this novel is Winston Smith, a thirty–nine year–old Party member who works at the

For the Party, the past not fixed and permanent; its reality is evident only in records," (Becnel 11).
Throughout the novel, it was often mentioned that the Party hired workers such as the main
protagonist, Winston, to alter history the way they wanted it. If the Party has control over what was
written down in history, they can easily manipulate their citizens to believe anything that they claim
is true. This ability of control over history has also opened up the opportunity to alter the memories
of the citizens of Oceania. Being able to control the memories of the people and causing them to
believe one thing and another is an example of doublethink. The Party used doublethink in order to
increase and strengthen their power over the citizens. Power is also a factor that revolves around the
action of doublethink. Becnel mentions the importance of doublethink and power in his critic upon
the novel, " Doublethink is the foundation on which the Party's power rests," (Becnel 11). Becnel's
claim basically states that in order to maintain and strengthen their power, the Party must resort to
doublethink in order to have better control of their citizens. Although the Party has taken actions
such as altering history and having a great amount of control over the people to express doublethink,
they have also done expressed doublethink in

Creative Writing: Lukas's Narrative Fiction
"Can I go home now?" Emil whined as Lukas led the two towards the entrance of the mall, the
noisiness and bustling Saturday crowd revealing itself as the automatic doors slid open for the
brothers.
"We just got here." Lukas replied, looking down at a small list he had scribbled down before they
left. "So, no."
Emil sighed and silently picked at the puffy sleeve of his hoodie. The platinum blond's outfit was
chosen with little thought or care, wanting his outward image to scream 'angsty teenager', something
he hoped would turn people away from talking to him that day. Lukas, who was dressed with much
more care– a nice button up paired with a pair of black slacks– compared to his little brother,
practically had to carry Emil out of the house ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leon, who had responded to the name Li– which was, to Emil's guess, was a nickname for him– had

man, who had the same apron on as the panda suit did, albeit a bit cleaner, grabbed Leon and gently
pushed him back behind, meeting Lukas as he, too, pulled Emil behind him. A slight heated
argument ensued between both angry men, catching the crowd's attention once more, who had just
began to disperse after seeing Emil hadn't fallen. Lukas was demanding an apology and the man,
whose name tag read 'Yao', was telling Lukas to keep an eye on his klutzy kid. Soon, Lukas had had
enough of this and turned around to grab Emil, dragging him towards the mall entrance. Emil was
glad that things were stopping before security came by and mortified Emil further, but he was also
disappointed that he was leaving the cute guy in the panda suit behind. Of course, he was too
nervous to talk to him, but maybe he could just awkwardly stand there around; yeah, that's probably
all he would be able to

My Big Brother Essay
If someone were to tell six year old me, my half brother, Nick, and I would one day have a good
relationship, I would think they were crazy. Growing up we had the worst connection; some days
were spent playing basketball or jumping on the trampoline; others we argued all afternoon about
what TV show or movie to watch. It went back and forth everyday, but everyday there was some
type of argument between us. Back then, I could never understand how one day my brother liked me
and the next, he hated me. Even to this day I still don't understand why our relationship was like
that. All I do know, is that since then, we have come a long way and now, at the ages of 17 and 23, I
can finally call my older brother a good friend. I came into Nick's life when he was six. My mom
says Nick was really excited that he was going to be a big brother; his first grade teacher even gave
him a Little Critter book called The New Baby because he talked about it so much during school. He
was a great, big brother when I was a baby. We have many pictures of him feeding and playing with
me in our baby books. I think he liked me back then because I was so young and couldn't mess with
all of his toys or talk his ear off yet. From my toddler years to about six, not much of our
relationship changed. I still didn't involve myself in his life much and he still enjoyed playing with
me, even as I learned how to stand, walk, and talk on my own. Our favorite things to do was
whatever Nick liked to do. If he

Is The Proof Aliens Exist?
It was late at night, and all I could see were beams of light flashing before my eyes. When suddenly
out of nowhere swooped a mysterious shaped object falling out of the sky. I wonder; could it be? Is
this proof aliens exist? Are they attacking earth, right now? If so, that means I have been right all
along. My friends and family never believed in aliens, but I did. They would always pick on me and
tell me to "get real," but I never listened to them. The mysterious object that passed me brought me
out of my thoughts. I got a closer look to see what it was and it was a UFO. I turned to see what it

Still sleeping, I sprung from my bed. I looked around my trashed room, but that was normal.
Nothing was out of place. I guess it was a dream after all. I stumbled back to bed and turned on my
side; my clock read 2:20 A.M. I was about to doze back off when I felt a horrible vibration right
outside my house. It was so strong and intense that it knocked me from my bed. It felt like my
dream. I scurried up off the floor and looked out of the window to see a gigantic, enormous UFO
outside my window – just like the one in my dreams.
"What are you doing just standing there? Get dressed, then pack food and water!" my mom's stark
voice startled me out of my stupor. She sounded panicked and afraid.
I wondered if my mom was scared of aliens, or was she scared that I might have been right. I

1984 Privacy Analysis
What Role Does Privacy Play in 1984? Don't we all love our privacy? (go on about how we get to
do things discreetly and how ppl in the book don't have that) Privacy plays a main role in 1984
because of how there are telescreens and cameras everywhere giving the people of Oceania a false
sense of peace and security. In 1984, Big Brother doesn't like the idea of privacy so that's when all

They look like the rest of the people so if you commit "thoughtcrime", or "facecrime", you would
get arrested by the Thought Police. How do they invade people's privacy? Well, I'm not a hundred
percent sure but I think that they have this thing where they, of course, read individual's thoughts.
"Your worst enemy, he reflected, was your own nervous system. At any moment the tension inside
you was liable to translate itself into some visible symptom" (pg 64). If someone was to make an
undesirable face that displayed their emotions or thoughts, for example, " if you find something that
you here sad, or gruesome, like the government of 1984 killing thousands of enemies, then you may
instinctively flinch. This is a facecrime because it shows that you disagree with the party's actions,
which is considered a crime." ( that is "facecrime". Those who commit this are punished with
torture, then the party brainwashes them to believe that they, the party, is good. After all that is done,
the party sends the 'criminal' to Room 103 where the person there dies. Works Cited

Descriptive Essay About My Brother
My brother is not just someone I share blood with but someone I can rely on and look up to. Patrick,
my seventeen year old brother, has been by my side since I was a little baby. My youngest memories
are of Patrick and I running around in our backyard laughing. As he grew older, I began to look up
to him. He was everything I aspired to be: intelligent, passionate, and athletic. Patrick always
seemed to know what he wanted in life, and I admired how he chased down his goals. There were
points in my life when I was very unmotivated, especially when I was seven years old. Insecure and
unsure, I did not believe in myself from a very young age, and Patrick was there for me when no
one else was. He made me believe in myself and my own abilities above anything else. I have my
big brother to thank for finding the strength to persevere through my struggles and overcoming my
obstacles.
At nine years old my brother began playing travel baseball. Watching baseball in the summer heat
for hours on end arouse something in me. I was only seven years old, but I knew I wanted to find
the passion for something like what my brother had for baseball. I remember one evening when me
and my brother were sitting on our lawn after dinner talking. The sun had just set, and the sky was
still pastel pink and orange.
"Patrick, why do you play baseball?" I asked, looking over at him.

My Big Brother
Maxfield Reinhardt was inspiring, creative, caring, unique, kind, and most importantly served as a
big brother to me. On August 17, 2016, he left the world, or as his parents like to say "unfurled his
butterfly wings". I never faced the loss of someone truly important to me, and even though coping in
the beginning was difficult I learned many things and also grew as a person in the end. From
grieving Max's loss, to meeting the people that meant most to him from his life, and also learning
from them, losing a friend to suicide taught me how to deal with emotions in a healthy way, how to
get out of my comfort zone, and most importantly to cherish whatever time spent with someone you
care about. After hearing Max committed suicide I couldn't figure out how to handle my emotions or
talk about my feelings. While driving home from school one day during my sophomore year, my
Mom suddenly said these words, "Max committed suicide last night". Hearing this I thought it was
totally out of the blue and surprising, and a huge rush of guilt ran over me because I hadn't seen him
since I was younger. Suddenly, our memories together spilled into my mind all at once. Max and I
were introduced as children, but he always was older than me, because of this and the fact that I was
an only child he basically served as my big brother all throughout our childhood. I remembered trips

1984 Freedom Quotes
One of my favorite quotes from 1984 is "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two equals
four. If that is granted, then all else follows." This quote, from main character Winston Smith, shows
how if people are given the truth, they are also given the right to say whatever they want. This quote
is very important to the story. In 1984, the government changes the past in order to make the present
and future seem more correct and accurate. One of Winston's fears is that the past will be so
changed that even basic facts that everyone agrees to, such as two plus two equals four, will no
longer be the truth. I like this quote because it captures the idea of the totalitarian government
controlling literally everything. Another quote I like is "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance
is strength." This quote is the motto of the English Socialist party, which reminds me of the
Communist party in countries such as North Korea. This quote displays how the English Socialist
party, or Ingsoc, brainwashes its people. For example, in today's world, we would recognize that ...

Mr. Charrington owns an antique shop that Winston visits often. The reason why I would trade
places with him over the other characters is that he is old enough to remember life before the
Revolution and Big Brother. I believe that having those memories surrounding me would make the
outside world seem more comforting. Another reason why I believe Mr. Charrington is altogether
the best character to live as is that he does not own a telescreen. A telescreen is a screen almost like
a television or computer monitor that constantly records your facial expressions, movements, and
words and blares propaganda. Life in such a strict world would be a lot easier if I was not being

Fear In 1984 George Orwell
Good Morning/ Afternoon class, today I will be discussing the cultural fear that totalitarian
governments bring and how that influenced George Orwell's writing of 1984 as well as how that
contextual understanding has influenced my interpretation of the novel.
The society in 1984, although fictional, mirrors the political weather of the societies that existed all
around George Orwell. Orwell's Oceania is a terrifying society reminiscent of Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Soviet Union where he witnessed the danger of absolute political authority in an age of
advanced technology. A society where there would be complete repression of the human spirit,
absolute governmental control of daily life, constant hunger, and the systematic "vaporization" of
individuals who do not, or will not, comply with the government's values. Orwell, tried to illustrate
that peril harshly in his novel, In an effort to convince readers to avoid any path that might lead
towards such social degradation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, both regimes consistently demonized their enemies, just as the Party and Big Brother do
in 1984, through the Two minutes Hate, Hate week and daily mass propaganda. Other aspects
include the Thought Police as a reinvention of Gestapo which were the secret police of Nazi
Germany that orchestrated large scale purges and terror. The spies and Youth league was a
reinvention of the Hitler Youth, which indoctrinated young people to the Party and encouraged them
to report disloyalty observed in their elders and among family members. This is similar to the case
when Parsons is convicted for thoughtcrime after his daughter reported him for saying "Down with
Big Brother" in his

Fall Of Big Brother Essay
The Fall of Big Brother In the novel 1984, there is an appendix at the end of the book called "The
Principles of Newspeak". In this appendix it explains how newspeak was devised and how people
speak it. But the most interesting thing about the appendix is that it is written in past tense, hinting
that someone rebelled against or took over Big Brother, and that it no longer rules Oceania. Some
ways that Big Brother could have fallen are that the proles rose up and rebelled or that the
Brotherhood was real and finally gathered up enough strength to fight and bring down Big Brother.
The first way that I believe that Big Brother could of fallen is that the Proles rose up and rebelled. I
believe this because the proles make up about 85% of the population in Oceania. Also there is no
way that the Thought police can control the minds of every single person in airstrip 1. So I think that
formed a mob and attacked and killed most if not all of the members of the inner party. I think this
because in "The Principles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This could have happened because in the book it said that all the powers were equally matched, but
if two of the powers were to team up against Oceania then it would not be able to hold its own
against the combined might of both the East Asian and Eurasian Army's. In the Appendix of the
book 1984, it is written in past tense which is hinting that the rule of Big Brother has fallen. Some
ways that the government could have fallen are that the proles grew restless with the rule, the
Brother Hood was real and attacked in an coordinated attack against Oceania, and the war was real
and the two super powers teamed up attacked the helpless Oceania. But in my opinion I think that

The role that Big brother play within the novel is the it was winston `s character in his book that
winston`s wrote about. The effect that big brother had on winston`s effect is that he was a character
and he was explaining about the party. Winston is obsessed with big brother more because he's a
good friend than O`brien because when winston was at work he would talk more with big brother
than O`brien because O'brien would be a little bit mean. The evidence that I found this at is when
the first chapter is about to finish or in the second chapter. When I was reading the book 1984

1984 Controlling The Mind Analysis
In 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother uses fear and lies to control its citizens and their thoughts.
They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by
Big Brother and used against them. O'Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into
believing there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O'Brien tells Winston that
his thoughts and memories are delusions that never occurred. O'Brien later explains that Big Brother
controls all, including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it's possible
that Big Brother controls reality by controlling the mind. Reality is what is perceived to be true, but
what exactly is the truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a theoretical notion
of understanding that can never be proven. In the Copenhagen Interpretation from the school of
quantum mechanics, reality does not exist without an observer to observe it so in relation to 1984,
by controlling the observer (the proles) Big Brother can control what they observe. "We control

continuously in fright can lead to hopelessness and depression. Big Brother relentlessly keeps its
populace in fright resulting in them feeling helpless and worthless. "In our world there will be no

My Childhood Memories Without Gary
Little girls usually request princess gowns and Barbie dolls for their birthday each year. Growing
up, for my birthday, I asked my parents for a little sister. A bit of an unconventional gift. I wanted
nothing more than someone to share closets with, to help me get ready for dates, and to gossip
endlessly with. My wish was never granted. Instead, I got something I did not realize I needed.
Something I would not immediately realize how life changing it would be. God graced me with two
older brothers, Alex and Gary. The twist in this story is, I am now older than one of them.
Confusing, I know. What is even more confusing, they are the same age yet their birthdays are 11
days apart. There are few scenarios that make this possible. Alex is my ... Show more content on

That woman was not my mother. I immediately asked her, "Mom what's wrong?" The conversation
that followed I imagine is one my mother wished never would have occurred in her lifetime. Her
words forever imprinted in my mind, "Gary passed away."
"No he didn't mom." I could not fathom that being true. To make something like that up would be
cruel. My mom was not lying. Life from that moment on has never been the same. The loss of a
family member creates a void that will never be filled. Never had I imagined that at the age of 18
with the world at my heels, I would be leaving my freshman college dorm to travel home to bury my
20 year old brother.
Nearly six years later, at the age of 24 I am now older than my older brother. I have surpassed many
milestones he will never have the pleasure of experiencing. Gary will eternally remain the young
age of 20. However, my life continues, on April 24th every year I add 365 days to my roster. I am
the type of person that searches for a silver lining in almost every situation possible. How does one
find a silver lining in death? You don't. The only way I can fathom dealing with it is knowing I have
a guardian angel safeguarding all those in my life as well as me. That is not to say I have not gained
anything from this tragedy.
First and foremost my last words to Gary were "I love you." Those are also the last words in any
conversation I have with my friends and family. Second, this life

A Student Of Lebanon Valley College Essay
As a student of Lebanon Valley College, I have found that this school is home for me. With my very
first step on campus, I knew this is where I belonged. Now, after just a short enjoyable semester I
am faced with the dilemma that I may not be here next semester. Understand, when I was in the
sixth grade I knew college is where I wanted to be, even though no one in my family saw it as a
possibility. I was that little kid with big dreams, but now I am being subjected to my own true faults.
To begin, in the third grade my parents got a divorce and everything I knew was torn into two. I
understand this divorce was a decade ago, but I never understood the rippling effect of it. We kids
had to commute back and forth between two parents who were barely keeping their heads above
water financially. I was a little person who had to deal with multiple occasions in a house with no
heat, no power, and no source of food. Times were tough, but my internal drive to become
something, trumped everything else. As a result of my parents' finances, college funds were never a
possibility. This impossibility hit home for me, which allowed a little third grader to fight tooth and
nail for a simple honor roll or distinguish honor roll in hopes of becoming something one day. As
the years went on I kept this status because I wanted to make myself proud, but most of all, I wanted
to make my mother proud. For my mom, colleges was never an option, she had too many setbacks
to even make it through high

Big Brother 1984 Isolation Quotes
P: In Winston's and others everyday lives, they are being watched by Big Brother. Every move that
one makes is being seen and one wrong facial expression can lead to being vanished. E: An example
of this is when the narrator says "It was one of those poster with the enormous face gazed from the
wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you
move. Big Brother is watching you, the caption beneath it ran" (Book one, page 1). Also it goes on
to show how much the government is watching the citizens with their telescreens when the narrator
says, "The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above
the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However this changes in book 3 when he is thinking about all the physical violence he knew he was
about to encounter. The narrator says, "... He saw himself groveling on the floor, screaming for
mercy through broken teeth. He hardly thought of Julia. He could not fix his mind on her. He loved
her and would not betray her; but that was only a fact, known as he knew the rules of arithmetic. He
felt no love for her and he hardly even wondered what was happening to her" (204). Additionally,
the narrator says, "If I could save Julia by doubling my own pain, would I do it? Yes, I would... But
that question was not answerable yet" (pg. 212–213). And then near the end of this chapter, it is said
that "... Never, for any reason on earth, could you wish for an increase of pain. Of pain you could
wish only one thing: that it should stop... In the face of pain there are no heroes, no heroes, he
thought over and over as he writhed on the floor, clutching uselessly at his disabled arm" (213). This
is clear evidence that the moment Winston is faced with physical pain/violence; his love for Julia is
questioned. He starts to say he never loved Julia when he starts to think about the pain he may
encounter. His love starts to deteriorate as more pain is inflicted upon him. Therefore, he makes
himself believe that there will never be a hero when there's pain and this gives him courage to betray

Simulation Of The Book 1984 By George Orwell
The simulation of 1984 really brought the book 1984 to life . While playing the game my classmates
and I were able to experience the horrors of the thought police, doublethink, and ingood. Playing the
game I ultimately felt trapped by Big Brother.
First , Big brother and the thought police were almost inevitable. There was no way to commit any
crimes only goodthink was prohibited. Throughout , the book Winston, describes the surveillance of
BB and how strong it was. For instance he states, . After you are caught by the thoughtpolice you
are at risk of being unpersoned or "cured " by the party. The trick was that everyone had their own
interpretation of what the rules meant. Therefore, the thought police could take anyone into custody.

about this – for about 2 seconds – before stating that I thought Donald had been more a source of
perspiration than inspiration. But I'd hate for you all to think he didn't make an impression upon me.
Those at the front should just about be able to make out the two–inch scar on my head, caused by
Donald practicing his fast–bowling against his seven year–old brother.

Winston's Protests Against Big Brother
My first event was when Winston wrote down anti–Big Brother thoughts in his diary. I chose this
event because this was Winston's first act of defiance against Big Brother that is shown in the book.
This was where readers can first see that WInston hates Big Brother. The second event was when
Winston meets and talks to Julia. This sets in motion the rest of the plot. This meeting leads to
Winston starting to work against Big Brother. The third event is when Winston and Julia meet in the
Golden Country. This showed a moment when Winston and Julia were free from Big Brother. The
fourth event was when Winston revealed to Julia that he was afraid of rats. This event foreshadows
that Winston's fear is going to be used against him. The fifth event is when Winston and Julia talk to

A RANDOM CHRISMAS STORY I MADE THAT IDK WHAT THE TITTLE SHOULD BE SO
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE (._.)/
I woke up to my dog barking, I slowly sat up half asleep. I could not see anything. I clumsily
walked to the light switch and turned it on. My eyes have not gusted yet, I seen black spots and
everything was blurry. I rubbed my eyes hopeing it would help, it did. I looked outside my window,
it was still dark out. It was snowing out, and on the news it said it's supposed to snow a lot
tomorrow. My dog started to bark again, I forgot that's the reason I woke up. The barking was
coming from down stars so I slowly opened my door and walked in the pitch black hallway. I had to
have one of my hands on the wall so I knew where I was going. When I did not feel the wall
anymore that must have been where the stars were. I carefully put one foot down to make sure I was
right. I could feel the cold stars with my foot. I grabbed on to the railing and walked on my toes. At
the bottom I could see my dog growling at something, it looked like a shadow. I said "hello, is
someone there?" I was expecting to hear my mom's or dad's voice but I heard nothing at all. I
walked to my dog wondering what he could be growling at, and to be onset I was a little scared. The
only light I had was from the Christmas tree, and it was not even the bright. My legs started to shake
with fear. Is this thing even human, or even something alive, could I just be seeing things? I was

Winston's Character Comparison With Big Brother
Winston Character Response Like all people, fictional or not, Winston is a complex and
multifaceted character. However, by viewing his choices, I can easily decide how I perceive his
character. Winston is a person I generally admire even though there are some aspects of him that I
disfavor. Winston constantly makes the decision to rebel against Big Brother in little ways. Some
examples of this are when he wrote "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" multiple times in a journal,
meeting with and having a relationship with Julia, and by involving himself with the Brotherhood. I
admire the rebellious nature of Winston because I believe it takes courage and deep thought to
diverge from what your government and society wants you to do. Being rebellious shows

Why Does Winston Use The Paperweight In 1984 By George Orwell
Winston uses inanimate objects to help him cope with his life today. Orwell uses this as a way to
show how hopeful and somewhat sad Winston's character is. Winston uses these objects as a way for
him to reminisce the days he loved life. The days were Big Brother was not in complete control.
One of the main objects throughout the story is the paperweight. The paper weight is a small motif a
reader may miss, but when interpreted it has a lot of meaning. The paperweight symbolizes
Winston's hopes and dreams of his time with Julia. He got the paperweight early in his
relationship/affair with Julia because it was very old and beautiful. This symbolizes hope in a way
that he wants life to be back the way it was before the Party. He felt that the

Reflection About Divorce
Divorce is difficult on the children involved. When my parents finalized their divorce, it was
decided that for the majority of the summer we would stay with our mother. The divorce occurred
when my brothers and I were very young. My mother lived in a small, unremarkable town named
Evart that is north of Lansing. Our grandmother lived in the outskirts of nearby Reed City. We spent
most of our time during the summer at her cramped little trailer. The trailer she lived in was on a
decently–sized plot of land. Her home was situated on a hill that leveled out quickly as the path led
to the road. The yard was expansive with hard brown grass covering a small portion with dirt
covering the rest. On one side of the trailer was a large red barn with chipped paint. On the other
side was an old brown camper that held two beds and an old television with an antenna resting on
the top. There was no backyard as the trailer was a few feet from a wooden fence that had barbed
wire across the top to stop the neighbor's horses from entering the property. The camper is where my
brother and I slept while with my grandmother. The property where my brother Sabastian and I
stayed at shaped some of the ways my personality developed. When our mother left us at my
grandmother's she would take my oldest brother Andrew with her, leaving my older brother
Sabastian and I with our grandma. We were mostly independent; we were not allowed in the house
so we roamed the property playing with the dogs

George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four 1984
In 1984 the world was transformed into an imaginable place which everything was bad and
unpresentable. The three most powerful "states" were Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia, who fight in
various configurations for power in a war which governments, in common sense spend resources to
maintain the populations morale and nationalism.
The Big Brother is the chief of the state Oceania, and he has almost a godly position in the society.
He is the chairman in a part, the only one with their motto clear as water – "War is peace, freedom is
slavery, ignorance is strength." The book addresses the ever increasing control by the government
over the people. This also reduce the freedom of individuality is reduced and the state gained more
and more power. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The outstanding character of Winston is his personal tendency to resist the boiling of the
individuality. His abilities to cause resistance are another one outstanding personality. Through him,
it gives the reader a chance to understand the harsh oppression that the Party along with Big Brother
and the Thought Police Institution inflict on the society. Winston is the only one that seems to
remember the time before the Party took over the power shift in Oceania. He also seems to always
discover new aspects of the society he lives in, and little by little he starts to question the way the
politicians rule the society.
Orwell wrote the book 1984 in 1948, it was shortly after the World War II had ended. The book is
somewhat inspired by the time's society, and a big part is inspired by the Soviet Union. For instance,
Big Brother is more or less alike Stalin, and this can be backed by the description of his moustache
and his ruthless.
In my opinion the statement Orwell is trying to make in the book is a society which the individual is
sidelined and their values are decreased. The other conclusion Orwell draws is a parallel between
knowledge and power by showing the readers how easy it is to manipulate people by limiting and
control their rights and acts. And the government twists and manipulates the information as they like

Descriptive Essay On Funerals
Helena Iero
Loving daughter and sister
1977 – 2004
27 yrs old
"So long and goodnight." I heard Gerard sing loud and proud. It was my funeral and I'm laying with
my eyes closed, not able to see my best friends. I could feel Gerard's tears without even looking at
him. Funerals are sad but I could never deal with having my best friend like this. The only thing I
never got about funerals is why they dress you up to be pretty. I mean, you're dead for Pete's sake.
Nobody in heaven or hell is going to judge you on what you're wearing, well I hope not. The dress I
wore was pretty though. It had red and black lacing on it. I don't know who picked it out but this
dress was from the party that I first met the boys at and that was pretty fun.

It was a very sunny October morning, but it wasn't any morning, it was Halloween morning. It was
also graduation morning. Why on Halloween? Well, I don't know. Anyways, I put on a white dress
that reached my knees and put on black flats. I braided my dark hair and threw on a necklace. The
necklace was one my mother gave me when I was little before she passed. I looked in the mirror and
I gripped the charm on the necklace. My brother then walked into the room and placed a calming
hand on my shoulder. I looked at him through the mirror and smiled.
"Mother and father would be proud if they were here," My brother said. I sighed.

My brother is not just someone I share blood with but someone I can rely on and look up to. Patrick,

I have are of Patrick and I running around in our backyard laughing and playing. As he grew older, I
began to look up to him. He was everything I aspired to be: intelligent, passionate, and athletic.
Patrick always seemed to know what he wanted in life, and I admired how he chased down his

Patrick had said the high pitched screeches were too much for his ears to handle.

"You know it is," he argued, "but don't be discouraged. If you really want to be a musician or an
artist, you can be. You can do anything you want if you work hard enough." In hindsight, I should
have listened to his advice, but changing a stubborn seven year old's mind is as tough as nails.
Finally, summer came to an end. The days were shorter, the temperatures cooler, and school
consumed most of my time. I watched the crisp, dead leaves flutter to the ground along with my
dreams. I had completely given up and not even Patrick could cheer me up.
"What about volleyball?" Patrick asked one day after school, "We never gave that a shot."
"There's no point in even trying," I answered.
"Come on, maybe you'll like it."
"Fine," I snapped. Little did I know that this conversation would change my childhood. Volleyball
would become an outlet for my problems, a source of excitement, and a way to make new, lifelong

holding on with all my might. I could just imagine how he must have felt, but he never said a word.
As we were making our way to his class line, I heard a loud screeching voice pierce my ears with
pain. "Excuse me boy, you need to get to your class line right now." Not realizing she was speaking
to me, I continued to stay with my brother. Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing I did. The old, thin,
wrinkled skin lady started marching in my direction holding a piece of bamboo in her hands. She
glared at me and repeated even louder with more authority. "Get to your class line at once." My
world began to crumble before my eyes, and darkness quickly overshadowed me, until daylight was

was in vain. The bright start of the day became the darkest hour of my life. Surrounded by strangers

How Does Orwell Create A Dystopian Novel 1984
The scene is London, Oceania, the year is most likely 1984, but the main character Winston is never

where Big Brother is always watching. The main character is a middle aged man named Winston.
His journal is the beginning, there are no laws, but free thinking can get you killed. He believes he
has found a spot in his apartment that the telescreen cannot see him if he is quiet. His neighbors are
stereotypical citizens: the husband too naïve to get killed, the wife overworked and scared of her

1984 Big Brother Essay
In the novel 1984, by George Orwell Big Brother does not appear in the reading but still has a
significant presence in the novel. Although Big brother never appears physically in the novel he is
considered the ruler of Oceania. All over Oceania you can find propaganda posters with his face on
it. The poster says, "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". Big brothers face is also on coins and
telescreens. Even though the ideas and views of Big brother and the party have brainwashed most

The Big brother propaganda did work for Winston. Instead of having respect for face of Big Brother
like other citizens of Oceania do Winston questioned the existence of him. Eventually at the end of
the book Winston is tortured into believing that Big Brother is real. Matter of fact he begins love
Big Brother. Big brother is also on the face of telescreens at times. Telescreens keep an eye out for
people committing crimes and thought crimes. "The telescreen received and transmitted
simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked
up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque
commanded, he could be seen as well as heard". In theory Big Brother is in the telescreens listening
and watching everything you do. By having telescreens and propaganda in homes and on the street
it directly affects the actions of the citizens. Now people are less likely to commit thought crime or
rebell because they are always being watched. Throughout most of the book Winston has hated big
brother. This quote is an example of his hatred. "His eyes re–focused on the page. He discovered

Self Reflection Paper
Self– Reflection and Discussion Questions
1. What are some of your earliest memories? Are they mainly joyful or painful? Identify one
specific early memory and reflect on the significance this early recollection has for you. What value
do you see in the Adlerian technique of having group members recall their earliest memories? Can
you think of ways to use this technique in groups you may lead?
My earliest recollections are mainly painful due to my eldest brother getting in trouble at an early
age of 9. Also, him being taken out of the household and into the system. Unfortunately, throughout
his entire life.
As a child, we spent our summers in the country with our grandma and grandpa, in Muskogee,
Oklahoma. My grandmother would cook big meals and my entire family would indulge. We went to
church nearly every day it was open. My cousins, siblings and myself looked forward to going to
"Big Momma's" house and therefore, it was in my opinion, a joyous occasion.
As a result, of my brother being incarcerated for the majority of, his life it was a significant
recollection because I had to take the role of being the responsible child and I had to help my
mother with all my siblings.
The value I see in the Adlerian technique of having group members recall their earliest memories is
because it can have an effect of the individuals in the way they think and behave in the present. If an
individual is isolated they can become self– absorbed and in my opinion, this is when individuals

My Favorite Memories
Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood were born and raised in a military housing
neighborhood located off the base in Warminster, Pennsylvania. My favorite memory however, was
the time my brother and I met one of our childhood best friends. I still remember it as if it happened
yesterday, no matter how much dust it collects in the back of my head, I can always blow it off and
replay it in my mind as if it was the first time seeing it through my eyes. One humid summer day my
older brother and I were outside in the backyard. I want to say I was 6 and my brother was 8, but we
were probably younger. The small fenced in space was just on the edge of the forest which allowed
the ground to be covered in dead pine needles that the trees would cast to the wind. We were bored
as ever, discontent with the neglected pair of swings and lonely slide that had been untouched for
most of the summer. They called to us, but our boredom, unable to be satisfied by such a simple fix,
declined their invitation. We sat in a pair of lawn chairs that were set up against the white fence
dividing our yard from the neighbors'. That's when I heard the sound of springs on a trampoline only
a few backyards down. It was a girl. The first thing I thought: cooties. She looked to be my brother's
age, and she was. With that being said, we decided to mess with this poor girl by calling out to her,
only to quickly duck down behind the safety of our fence. We were hooligans. This was probably

Propaganda In The Book 1984 By George Orwell

  • 1. Propaganda In The Book 1984 By George Orwell "War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength" (Orwell). This mantra was burned into the minds of the citizens of Oceania, or future London, where Winston Smith, the protagonist, lives. The citizens of Oceania are constantly being bombarded with propaganda in favor of Big Brother and the Party, who leads and governs them, which brings the majority of them into complete submission. In the book, 1984, George Orwell shows how technology is used by the Party to monitor, brainwash, and provoke fear in the people of Oceania in order to control them. In Oceania, every little thing everyone does is monitored at all times, which proves the saying, "Big Brother is watching", which is hung up everywhere. This is done mainly through the telescreens, which are set up in everyone's homes and are similar to televisions except for the fact that they can never be completely turned off, and instead of just transmitting information, they also receive it by recording your sound and movements. Winston ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The telescreens which are constantly going on are filled with propaganda geared toward infatuation with the Party, and hating the enemy. Each day at Winston's workplace, a period of time called the Two Minutes Hate is held, where everyone is shown a video which glorifies Big Brother and denounces Goldstein, the enemy and rebel of the Party. Because it is burned in their minds, the people are passionate about their hatred for Goldstein and love for Big Brother. It is clear how enraged they are by Goldstein when it says, "Before the Hate had proceeded for thirty seconds, uncontrollable exclamations of rage were breaking out from half the people in the room...In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from [Goldstein]" (Orwell ... • 2. College Admissions Essay: Everything I Ever Needed Everything I Ever Needed I remember the rattling and squeaking of the bunk beds as we jumped around laughing. My room was basic except the bunk beds that I found fun in many different ways from jumping off the top into pillows to pretending the floor was lava with my siblings, those memories will never leave my mind. With my brother, David Gaipo Junior, being ten years older than me it was hard to connect at times, but I could look up to him and learn without him even knowing. One difference was that, my brother and I had different mothers with that obstacle I only saw him every weekend if I felt lucky. Having a big brother is every little boy's dream. To have someone to look up to and also just have a great time with is unbeatable. My brother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... David has taught me how to overcome these obstacles and to become a man. Also, he has taught me that life is not easy he has had his ups and downs and times where he did not know what he was going to do. Seeing my brother go through the adversity he faced and to have a great career, a home, and a woman he loves gives me the motivation and strength that drives me today. He showed his true character by being there for his young brother and sister and not even doing it because he was forced to, he did it because he loved us and wanted the best for us. Every time I see my brother he succeeds at making me smile. He will crack the inappropriate joke or try and fight me like we are in the Ultimate Fighting Championship league. I will always look up to my brother, I will never lose my respect. Through thick and thin my brother has been there for me and I will always be there for him. David gave me the guidance and will power to be who I truly am. From him I learn how to overcome obstacles and how to succeed at life. I will take these lessons and apply them to my future and everyday to make him proud of me. I will never let him down or ever give up on him just like he never did for me. The man I am today was formed by the love and dedication of my big brother David Gaipo Junior and I cannot thank him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Creative Games "Happy birthday, kiddo," said my big brother Paul. My brother always had a tendency to smile, even though he wasn't the most appealing, with crooked teeth, glasses, and black hair sticking out all over. I opened the card, read the cute little message, (I'm forced to think it was some sort of pun, I can't remember.) and the golden sheen of an American Express gift card did the first thing I decided to do was hug my brother. Of course, what I did with this card was what I wanted to do since the last time I was at my brother's house: get a new game, 'BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend'. And I did, after waiting for the game to install, looking up character biographies, and figuring out how to pronounce the character names. My first instinct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Honestly, I am so happy that there was a breather fight in between, between the characters Hakumen, a warrior clad in white, and the Leader of the Six Heroes and Terumi, a man wearing an orange and black cloak decorated with snake imagery, and my favorite character, due to his rather despicable actions. Too bad it went by faster than a lightning bolt. In the second round, I had a tougher time, but I knew what to do against the beast, so it evens out. What I did was a concept called dominant strategy: Once you discover something that is good, you're always going to use that thing. The strategy was press Jump, then A or B on the controller. Jump, A or B, Jump, A or B, again, and again, and again. However, when his health meter was very low, the beast let out a giant laser beam. The character that I was controlling was unfortunately defeated. I had the urge to throw something. "OK, that was just one loss. No need to scream about it," said a voice in my head. And so, after a day, and a nice warm shower, I decided to finish the job, and, thanks to indomitable spirit, I won. Or, at least, for the second round. But the battle wasn't over yet. No breather this time. Just right into the fight as Ragna. "And boy, is this going to be fun or what?" I asked myself, oozing with sarcasm. "Ugh." I yelled, annoyed, as I get attacked by a series of flying swords. Lost again. "Grr!" I screamed, angrier, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Personal Narrative Essay : The Best Days Of My Childhood One of the best days of my childhood was the day my older brother rolled his sparkling new bike up the driveway. I remember it fondly, it was a summers day and I sat on the front stoop of my small little home with my mom watching my dad and brother unload the new bicycle from our family minivan. Lime green hammerhead sharks wrapped around the cobalt blue aluminum framing and silver hand breaks glittered in the sunlight. When my brother and I were kids, having a bike was a gateway to freedom and more independence. I'd watch Kenneth race up and down the cracked sidewalk on the silver Gremlin bike awaiting my turn to ride. My instincts to keep up with my big brother would boil, I coveted that Gremlin and when I did get the chance to ride it, I felt brave. Kenneth's new Hammerhead bike meant the Gremlin was finally mine, a hand me down that was just out of reach for years. That evening we strapped on our helmets and raced down the sidewalks together and followed my dad around the neighborhood. I remember peddling past the library, stopping to get a donut at the supermarket, through parks and toward my tiny preschool, Evergreen Christian. When I still lived in Alger Heights I was too young to understand the story of the neighborhood and the social sciences involved in this community, so when my group chose this neighborhood I was excited to learn more about the community I was raised in. I returned to the neighborhood a few weeks ago and instead of exploring on my Gremlin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. George Orwell And 1984 Book Comparison I have started on my second book called "1984" and around 90 pages deep. For this reflection I am doing a book comparison between my last book "How We Decide". Both books are totally different. "How we Decide" shows the aspect of how the human mind makes choices. The author explained how we decide from right to wrong and how this is triggered inside the mind. The book is classified as non–fiction Psychology. There is no characters in the book besides the people that the author uses in different studies. The author uses a group of people or he singles out a person to show an example of how the brain works. However 1984 is political fiction and dystopian novel. I have never read one before but watched the "Hunger Games" which is based off the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. 1984 Reflective Essay The reading of 1984 shows that throughout our history man has sat and pondered the idea of what our culture would look like if political control got out of hand. His book is written as a type of warning and paints the picture of a dystopia. Where the government is the end all be all, with its people having no say towards their own lives or laws that shape them. It reminded me of a modern twist on a soviet dictatorship with the posters along the streets saying "big brother is watching you." The cameras watching their every move, their thoughts and even matters of the heart can be screened. This I found particularly unsettling. For I tried to put myself in Winston's shoes, imaging that type of reality on myself. I feel as though I would be similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. 1984 Doublethink Analysis The Role of Doublethink in The Government of 1984 " War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength,". The following quote originates from the infamous novel, 1984 by George Orwell. The significance of this popular quote was to display an example of the action of doublethink. Doublethink is the act of having two contradictory thoughts at the same time and believing both are true. Doublethink plays an influential role in the novel, 1984. The novel takes place in a super–state by the name of Oceania which covers the entire continents of our America in reality. The main character of this novel is Winston Smith, a thirty–nine year–old Party member who works at the Ministry of Truth correcting "errors" in past publication who has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the Party, the past not fixed and permanent; its reality is evident only in records," (Becnel 11). Throughout the novel, it was often mentioned that the Party hired workers such as the main protagonist, Winston, to alter history the way they wanted it. If the Party has control over what was written down in history, they can easily manipulate their citizens to believe anything that they claim is true. This ability of control over history has also opened up the opportunity to alter the memories of the citizens of Oceania. Being able to control the memories of the people and causing them to believe one thing and another is an example of doublethink. The Party used doublethink in order to increase and strengthen their power over the citizens. Power is also a factor that revolves around the action of doublethink. Becnel mentions the importance of doublethink and power in his critic upon the novel, " Doublethink is the foundation on which the Party's power rests," (Becnel 11). Becnel's claim basically states that in order to maintain and strengthen their power, the Party must resort to doublethink in order to have better control of their citizens. Although the Party has taken actions such as altering history and having a great amount of control over the people to express doublethink, they have also done expressed doublethink in ... • 9. Creative Writing: Lukas's Narrative Fiction "Can I go home now?" Emil whined as Lukas led the two towards the entrance of the mall, the noisiness and bustling Saturday crowd revealing itself as the automatic doors slid open for the brothers. "We just got here." Lukas replied, looking down at a small list he had scribbled down before they left. "So, no." Emil sighed and silently picked at the puffy sleeve of his hoodie. The platinum blond's outfit was chosen with little thought or care, wanting his outward image to scream 'angsty teenager', something he hoped would turn people away from talking to him that day. Lukas, who was dressed with much more care– a nice button up paired with a pair of black slacks– compared to his little brother, practically had to carry Emil out of the house ... A slight heated argument ensued between both angry men, catching the crowd's attention once more, who had just began to disperse after seeing Emil hadn't fallen. Lukas was demanding an apology and the man, whose name tag read 'Yao', was telling Lukas to keep an eye on his klutzy kid. Soon, Lukas had had enough of this and turned around to grab Emil, dragging him towards the mall entrance. Emil was glad that things were stopping before security came by and mortified Emil further, but he was also disappointed that he was leaving the cute guy in the panda suit behind. • 10. My Big Brother Essay If someone were to tell six year old me, my half brother, Nick, and I would one day have a good relationship, I would think they were crazy. Growing up we had the worst connection; some days were spent playing basketball or jumping on the trampoline; others we argued all afternoon about what TV show or movie to watch. It went back and forth everyday, but everyday there was some type of argument between us. Back then, I could never understand how one day my brother liked me and the next, he hated me. Even to this day I still don't understand why our relationship was like that. All I do know, is that since then, we have come a long way and now, at the ages of 17 and 23, I can finally call my older brother a good friend. I came into Nick's life when he was six. My mom says Nick was really excited that he was going to be a big brother; his first grade teacher even gave him a Little Critter book called The New Baby because he talked about it so much during school. He was a great, big brother when I was a baby. We have many pictures of him feeding and playing with me in our baby books. I think he liked me back then because I was so young and couldn't mess with all of his toys or talk his ear off yet. From my toddler years to about six, not much of our relationship changed. I still didn't involve myself in his life much and he still enjoyed playing with me, even as I learned how to stand, walk, and talk on my own. Our favorite things to do was whatever Nick liked to do. • 11. Is The Proof Aliens Exist? It was late at night, and all I could see were beams of light flashing before my eyes. When suddenly out of nowhere swooped a mysterious shaped object falling out of the sky. I wonder; could it be? Is this proof aliens exist? Are they attacking earth, right now? If so, that means I have been right all along. My friends and family never believed in aliens, but I did. They would always pick on me and tell me to "get real," but I never listened to them. The mysterious object that passed me brought me out of my thoughts. I got a closer look to see what it was and it was a UFO. I turned to see what it was doing and all of a sudden a..... Still sleeping, I sprung from my bed. I looked around my trashed room, but that was normal. Nothing was out of place. I guess it was a dream after all. I stumbled back to bed and turned on my side; my clock read 2:20 A.M. I was about to doze back off when I felt a horrible vibration right outside my house. It was so strong and intense that it knocked me from my bed. It felt like my dream. I scurried up off the floor and looked out of the window to see a gigantic, enormous UFO outside my window – just like the one in my dreams. "What are you doing just standing there? Get dressed, then pack food and water!" my mom's stark voice startled me out of my stupor. She sounded panicked and afraid. (go on about how we get to do things discreetly and how ppl in the book don't have that) Privacy plays a main role in 1984 because of how there are telescreens and cameras everywhere giving the people of Oceania a false sense of peace and security. In 1984, Big Brother doesn't like the idea of privacy so that's when all the telescreens, little TVs that can see what you're doing and what you're saying. Well, I'm not a hundred percent sure but I think that they have this thing where they, of course, read individual's thoughts. "Your worst enemy, he reflected, was your own nervous system. At any moment the tension inside you was liable to translate itself into some visible symptom" (pg 64). If someone was to make an undesirable face that displayed their emotions or thoughts, for example, " if you find something that you here sad, or gruesome, like the government of 1984 killing thousands of enemies, then you may instinctively flinch. • 13. Descriptive Essay About My Brother My brother is not just someone I share blood with but someone I can rely on and look up to. Patrick, my seventeen year old brother, has been by my side since I was a little baby. My youngest memories are of Patrick and I running around in our backyard laughing. As he grew older, I began to look up to him. He was everything I aspired to be: intelligent, passionate, and athletic. Patrick always seemed to know what he wanted in life, and I admired how he chased down his goals. There were points in my life when I was very unmotivated, especially when I was seven years old. Insecure and unsure, I did not believe in myself from a very young age, and Patrick was there for me when no one else was. He made me believe in myself and my own abilities above anything else. I have my big brother to thank for finding the strength to persevere through my struggles and overcoming my obstacles. At nine years old my brother began playing travel baseball. Watching baseball in the summer heat for hours on end arouse something in me. I was only seven years old, but I knew I wanted to find the passion for something like what my brother had for baseball. I remember one evening when me and my brother were sitting on our lawn after dinner talking. The sun had just set, and the sky was still pastel pink and orange. "Patrick, why do you play baseball?" I asked, looking over at him. Pausing, he replied, "I play because it excites me, and because I enjoy the feeling I get from swinging the bat and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On August 17, 2016, he left the world, or as his parents like to say "unfurled his butterfly wings". I never faced the loss of someone truly important to me, and even though coping in the beginning was difficult I learned many things and also grew as a person in the end. From grieving Max's loss, to meeting the people that meant most to him from his life, and also learning from them, losing a friend to suicide taught me how to deal with emotions in a healthy way, how to get out of my comfort zone, and most importantly to cherish whatever time spent with someone you care about. After hearing Max committed suicide I couldn't figure out how to handle my emotions or talk about my feelings. While driving home from school one day during my sophomore year, my Mom suddenly said these words, "Max committed suicide last night". Hearing this I thought it was totally out of the blue and surprising, and a huge rush of guilt ran over me because I hadn't seen him since I was younger. Suddenly, our memories together spilled into my mind all at once. Max and I were introduced as children, but he always was older than me, because of this and the fact that I was an only child he basically served as my big brother all throughout our childhood. • 17. 1984 Freedom Quotes One of my favorite quotes from 1984 is "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two equals four. If that is granted, then all else follows." This quote, from main character Winston Smith, shows how if people are given the truth, they are also given the right to say whatever they want. This quote is very important to the story. In 1984, the government changes the past in order to make the present and future seem more correct and accurate. One of Winston's fears is that the past will be so changed that even basic facts that everyone agrees to, such as two plus two equals four, will no longer be the truth. I like this quote because it captures the idea of the totalitarian government controlling literally everything. Another quote I like is "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength." This quote is the motto of the English Socialist party, which reminds me of the Communist party in countries such as North Korea. This quote displays how the English Socialist party, or Ingsoc, brainwashes its people. For example, in today's world, we would recognize that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that having those memories surrounding me would make the outside world seem more comforting. Another reason why I believe Mr. Charrington is altogether the best character to live as is that he does not own a telescreen. A telescreen is a screen almost like a television or computer monitor that constantly records your facial expressions, movements, and words and blares propaganda. • 18. Fear In 1984 George Orwell Good Morning/ Afternoon class, today I will be discussing the cultural fear that totalitarian governments bring and how that influenced George Orwell's writing of 1984 as well as how that contextual understanding has influenced my interpretation of the novel. The society in 1984, although fictional, mirrors the political weather of the societies that existed all around George Orwell. Orwell's Oceania is a terrifying society reminiscent of Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union where he witnessed the danger of absolute political authority in an age of advanced technology. A society where there would be complete repression of the human spirit, absolute governmental control of daily life, constant hunger, and the systematic "vaporization" of individuals who do not, or will not, comply with the government's values. Orwell, tried to illustrate that peril harshly in his novel, In an effort to convince readers to avoid any path that might lead towards such social degradation. ... The spies and Youth league was a reinvention of the Hitler Youth, which indoctrinated young people to the Party and encouraged them to report disloyalty observed in their elders and among family members. • 19. Fall Of Big Brother Essay The Fall of Big Brother In the novel 1984, there is an appendix at the end of the book called "The Principles of Newspeak". In this appendix it explains how newspeak was devised and how people speak it. But the most interesting thing about the appendix is that it is written in past tense, hinting that someone rebelled against or took over Big Brother, and that it no longer rules Oceania. Some ways that Big Brother could have fallen are that the proles rose up and rebelled or that the Brotherhood was real and finally gathered up enough strength to fight and bring down Big Brother. The first way that I believe that Big Brother could of fallen is that the Proles rose up and rebelled. I believe this because the proles make up about 85% of the population in Oceania. Also there is no way that the Thought police can control the minds of every single person in airstrip 1. Some ways that the government could have fallen are that the proles grew restless with the rule, the Brother Hood was real and attacked in an coordinated attack against Oceania, and the war was real and the two super powers teamed up attacked the helpless Oceania. Winston is obsessed with big brother more because he's a good friend than O`brien because when winston was at work he would talk more with big brother than O`brien because O'brien would be a little bit mean. • 21. 1984 Controlling The Mind Analysis In 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother uses fear and lies to control its citizens and their thoughts. They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by Big Brother and used against them. O'Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into believing there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O'Brien tells Winston that his thoughts and memories are delusions that never occurred. O'Brien later explains that Big Brother controls all, including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it's possible that Big Brother controls reality by controlling the mind. Reality is what is perceived to be true, but what exactly is the truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a theoretical notion of understanding that can never be proven. In the Copenhagen Interpretation from the school of quantum mechanics, reality does not exist without an observer to observe it so in relation to 1984, by controlling the observer (the proles) Big Brother can control what they observe. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Big Brother is watching you, the caption beneath it ran" (Book one, page 1). He loved her and would not betray her; but that was only a fact, known as he knew the rules of arithmetic. He felt no love for her and he hardly even wondered what was happening to her" (204). Additionally, the narrator says, "If I could save Julia by doubling my own pain, would I do it? Yes, I would... But that question was not answerable yet" (pg. 212–213). And then near the end of this chapter, it is said that "... Never, for any reason on earth, could you wish for an increase of pain. Of pain you could wish only one thing: that it should stop... In the face of pain there are no heroes, no heroes, he thought over and over as he writhed on the floor, clutching uselessly at his disabled arm" (213). This is clear evidence that the moment Winston is faced with physical pain/violence; his love for Julia is questioned. He starts to say he never loved Julia when he starts to think about the pain he may encounter. His love starts to deteriorate as more pain is inflicted upon him. • 31. Why Does Winston Use The Paperweight In 1984 By George Orwell Winston uses inanimate objects to help him cope with his life today. Orwell uses this as a way to show how hopeful and somewhat sad Winston's character is. Winston uses these objects as a way for him to reminisce the days he loved life. The days were Big Brother was not in complete control. One of the main objects throughout the story is the paperweight. The paper weight is a small motif a reader may miss, but when interpreted it has a lot of meaning. The paperweight symbolizes Winston's hopes and dreams of his time with Julia. He got the paperweight early in his relationship/affair with Julia because it was very old and beautiful. This symbolizes hope in a way that he wants life to be back the way it was before the Party. He felt that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Reflection About Divorce Divorce is difficult on the children involved. When my parents finalized their divorce, it was decided that for the majority of the summer we would stay with our mother. The divorce occurred when my brothers and I were very young. My mother lived in a small, unremarkable town named Evart that is north of Lansing. Our grandmother lived in the outskirts of nearby Reed City. We spent most of our time during the summer at her cramped little trailer. The trailer she lived in was on a decently–sized plot of land. Her home was situated on a hill that leveled out quickly as the path led to the road. The yard was expansive with hard brown grass covering a small portion with dirt covering the rest. On one side of the trailer was a large red barn with chipped paint. On the other side was an old brown camper that held two beds and an old television with an antenna resting on the top. There was no backyard as the trailer was a few feet from a wooden fence that had barbed wire across the top to stop the neighbor's horses from entering the property. The camper is where my brother and I slept while with my grandmother. The property where my brother Sabastian and I stayed at shaped some of the ways my personality developed. When our mother left us at my grandmother's she would take my oldest brother Andrew with her, leaving my older brother Sabastian and I with our grandma. We were mostly independent; we were not allowed in the house so we roamed the property playing with the dogs ... • 33. George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four 1984 In 1984 the world was transformed into an imaginable place which everything was bad and unpresentable. The three most powerful "states" were Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia, who fight in various configurations for power in a war which governments, in common sense spend resources to maintain the populations morale and nationalism. The Big Brother is the chief of the state Oceania, and he has almost a godly position in the society. He is the chairman in a part, the only one with their motto clear as water – "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength." The book addresses the ever increasing control by the government over the people. This also reduce the freedom of individuality is reduced and the state gained more and more power. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The outstanding character of Winston is his personal tendency to resist the boiling of the individuality. His abilities to cause resistance are another one outstanding personality. Through him, it gives the reader a chance to understand the harsh oppression that the Party along with Big Brother and the Thought Police Institution inflict on the society. Winston is the only one that seems to remember the time before the Party took over the power shift in Oceania. He also seems to always discover new aspects of the society he lives in, and little by little he starts to question the way the politicians rule the society. Orwell wrote the book 1984 in 1948, it was shortly after the World War II had ended. The book is somewhat inspired by the time's society, and a big part is inspired by the Soviet Union. For instance, Big Brother is more or less alike Stalin, and this can be backed by the description of his moustache and his ruthless. In my opinion the statement Orwell is trying to make in the book is a society which the individual is sidelined and their values are decreased. The other conclusion Orwell draws is a parallel between knowledge and power by showing the readers how easy it is to manipulate people by limiting and control their rights and acts. And the government twists and manipulates the information as they like and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Descriptive Essay On Funerals Helena Iero Loving daughter and sister 1977 – 2004 27 yrs old "So long and goodnight." I heard Gerard sing loud and proud. It was my funeral and I'm laying with my eyes closed, not able to see my best friends. I could feel Gerard's tears without even looking at him. Funerals are sad but I could never deal with having my best friend like this. The only thing I never got about funerals is why they dress you up to be pretty. I mean, you're dead for Pete's sake. Nobody in heaven or hell is going to judge you on what you're wearing, well I hope not. The dress I wore was pretty though. It had red and black lacing on it. I don't know who picked it out but this dress was from the party that I first met the boys at and that was pretty fun. 11 yrs earlier It was a very sunny October morning, but it wasn't any morning, it was Halloween morning. It was also graduation morning. Why on Halloween? Well, I don't know. Anyways, I put on a white dress that reached my knees and put on black flats. I braided my dark hair and threw on a necklace. The necklace was one my mother gave me when I was little before she passed. I looked in the mirror and I gripped the charm on the necklace. My brother then walked into the room and placed a calming hand on my shoulder. I looked at him through the mirror and smiled. "Mother and father would be proud if they were here," My brother said. I sighed. "Yeah, but I'm glad I'm getting taken care of by my big brother," I turned around and gave my brother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. My Eulogy Essay My brother is not just someone I share blood with but someone I can rely on and look up to. Patrick, my seventeen–year–old brother, has been by my side since I was a little baby. The earliest memories I have are of Patrick and I running around in our backyard laughing and playing. As he grew older, I began to look up to him. He was everything I aspired to be: intelligent, passionate, and athletic. Patrick always seemed to know what he wanted in life, and I admired how he chased down his goals. There were points in my life when I was extremely unmotivated, one time being when I was seven years old. Insecure and unsure, I did not believe in myself from a remarkably young age, and Patrick was there for me when no one else was. He made me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patrick had said the high pitched screeches were too much for his ears to handle. "I could be an artist." "You can't even draw in the lines of a coloring book." "That's not true." "You know it is," he argued, "but don't be discouraged. If you really want to be a musician or an artist, you can be. You can do anything you want if you work hard enough." In hindsight, I should have listened to his advice, but changing a stubborn seven year old's mind is as tough as nails. Finally, summer came to an end. The days were shorter, the temperatures cooler, and school consumed most of my time. I watched the crisp, dead leaves flutter to the ground along with my dreams. I had completely given up and not even Patrick could cheer me up. "What about volleyball?" Patrick asked one day after school, "We never gave that a shot." "There's no point in even trying," I answered. "Come on, maybe you'll like it." "Fine," I snapped. Little did I know that this conversation would change my childhood. Volleyball would become an outlet for my problems, a source of excitement, and a way to make new, lifelong friends in the years that followed. But for seven year old me, volleyball was just another box to check off. My mom signed me up for a volleyball camp along with my neighbor and best friend, Ava. Surprisingly, we both had a great time at the camp. It felt like a blindfold had been lifted from my eyes, and I could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. When Daylight Became a Mere Spark Anthony Brathwaite February 13, 2014 Narrative Essay When Daylight Became a Mere Spark In some weird way parents always think that first day after the summer vacation is very exciting for their kids. They buy clothes all summer long searching for that right outfit for the first day. You could hear the many conversations between the adults, who is wearing what and how cute their little one are. I came to realize quickly that this event caused more excitement for them than for the kids. I remember my first day like it was yesterday and I can't relate to the excitement that many parents have today. It was a normal day in Barbados. Sunrise was very beautiful, as it rides just beyond the cliff of the sea. A bright orange just five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I knew if anything happened he'd be there to protect me. Just at that moment I was feeling some what comfortable in my skin, there was a startling clanging of the bell in the distance that made my heart want to race back home. Fear rushed into my body as I wrapped my arms around my brother holding on with all my might. I could just imagine how he must have felt, but he never said a word. As we were making our way to his class line, I heard a loud screeching voice pierce my ears with pain. "Excuse me boy, you need to get to your class line right now." Not realizing she was speaking to me, I continued to stay with my brother. Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing I did. The old, thin, wrinkled skin lady started marching in my direction holding a piece of bamboo in her hands. She glared at me and repeated even louder with more authority. "Get to your class line at once." My world began to crumble before my eyes, and darkness quickly overshadowed me, until daylight was a mere spark. I remembered yelling to my brother, "Selwyn, Selwyn, please help me." But my plea was in vain. The bright start of the day became the darkest hour of my life. Surrounded by strangers as these foreign eyes stared at me as the tears continued to stream down the cheeks. My heart was thumping in my body like a bass drum in a school band parade. • 37. How Does Orwell Create A Dystopian Novel 1984 The scene is London, Oceania, the year is most likely 1984, but the main character Winston is never quite sure. George Orwell created a dystopian novel that warns against a totalitarian government where Big Brother is always watching. The main character is a middle aged man named Winston. His journal is the beginning, there are no laws, but free thinking can get you killed. He believes he has found a spot in his apartment that the telescreen cannot see him if he is quiet. His neighbors are stereotypical citizens: the husband too naïve to get killed, the wife overworked and scared of her children, the children are blood thirsty little creatures. • 38. 1984 Big Brother Essay In the novel 1984, by George Orwell Big Brother does not appear in the reading but still has a significant presence in the novel. Although Big brother never appears physically in the novel he is considered the ruler of Oceania. All over Oceania you can find propaganda posters with his face on it. The poster says, "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". Big brothers face is also on coins and telescreens. Even though the ideas and views of Big brother and the party have brainwashed most people except a few like Winston until the end of the novel. With that the party requires citizens to conform to the ideas of Big Brother. The citizens are also required to praise and love Big Brother and if you are caught going against him you will be vaporized. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Big brother propaganda did work for Winston. Instead of having respect for face of Big Brother like other citizens of Oceania do Winston questioned the existence of him. Eventually at the end of the book Winston is tortured into believing that Big Brother is real. Matter of fact he begins love Big Brother. Big brother is also on the face of telescreens at times. Telescreens keep an eye out for people committing crimes and thought crimes. "The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard". In theory Big Brother is in the telescreens listening and watching everything you do. By having telescreens and propaganda in homes and on the street it directly affects the actions of the citizens. Now people are less likely to commit thought crime or rebell because they are always being watched. Throughout most of the book Winston has hated big brother. This quote is an example of his hatred. "His eyes re–focused on the page. He discovered that while he sat helplessly musing he had also been writing, as though by automatic action. And it was no longer the same cramped, awkward handwriting as before. His pen had slid voluptuously over the smooth paper, printing in large neat capitals DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH ... • 39. Self Reflection Paper Self– Reflection and Discussion Questions 1. What are some of your earliest memories? Are they mainly joyful or painful? Identify one specific early memory and reflect on the significance this early recollection has for you. What value do you see in the Adlerian technique of having group members recall their earliest memories? Can you think of ways to use this technique in groups you may lead? My earliest recollections are mainly painful due to my eldest brother getting in trouble at an early age of 9. Also, him being taken out of the household and into the system. Unfortunately, throughout his entire life. As a child, we spent our summers in the country with our grandma and grandpa, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. My grandmother would cook big meals and my entire family would indulge. We went to church nearly every day it was open. My cousins, siblings and myself looked forward to going to "Big Momma's" house and therefore, it was in my opinion, a joyous occasion. As a result, of my brother being incarcerated for the majority of, his life it was a significant recollection because I had to take the role of being the responsible child and I had to help my mother with all my siblings. The value I see in the Adlerian technique of having group members recall their earliest memories is because it can have an effect of the individuals in the way they think and behave in the present. If an individual is isolated they can become self– absorbed and in my opinion, this is when individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. My Favorite Memories Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood were born and raised in a military housing neighborhood located off the base in Warminster, Pennsylvania. My favorite memory however, was the time my brother and I met one of our childhood best friends. I still remember it as if it happened yesterday, no matter how much dust it collects in the back of my head, I can always blow it off and replay it in my mind as if it was the first time seeing it through my eyes. One humid summer day my older brother and I were outside in the backyard. I want to say I was 6 and my brother was 8, but we were probably younger. The small fenced in space was just on the edge of the forest which allowed the ground to be covered in dead pine needles that the trees would cast to the wind. We were bored as ever, discontent with the neglected pair of swings and lonely slide that had been untouched for most of the summer. They called to us, but our boredom, unable to be satisfied by such a simple fix, declined their invitation. We sat in a pair of lawn chairs that were set up against the white fence dividing our yard from the neighbors'. That's when I heard the sound of springs on a trampoline only a few backyards down. It was a girl. The first thing I thought: cooties. She looked to be my brother's age, and she was. With that being said, we decided to mess with this poor girl by calling out to her, only to quickly duck down behind the safety of our fence. We were hooligans. This was probably not ...
