ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
What is Culture:
Culture is a system of values, beliefs, shared
meanings, norms and traditions that
distinguish one group from another.
 Based on:
1. identity
2. nationality
3. social class
4. gender
5. Racio-ethnicity
6. the organizational itself
ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
 Definition of Organizational Culture:
Socially acquired and shared rules of
conduct that are manifested in the
organization’s artifacts, perspectives,
values, and assumptions.
 Organizational culture serves as a
foundation for the management system
and its behaviors and practices
Effects of Organizational Culture
 Impacts employee motivation
 Affects group productivity and
performance
 Constrains or supports organizational
strategies and goals
 May foster or hinder innovation
 Provides meaning and direction for
employees
Assumptions of Innovative Versus
Stable Cultures
INNOVATION:
•People are proactive
and can be trusted
•Truth is found by
personal investigation
and testing
•Future oriented
•We can master the
environment
•Relationships are
based on mutual
respect and equality
STABILITY:
•People are lazy and
can’t be trusted
•Truth resides in the
Boss
•Oriented to the past or

ORGANIZATIONAL
SOCIALIZATION
The process of conveying the organization's
goals, norms and preferred ways of doing
things to members.
This is done by the:
 development of work abilities
 acquisition of appropriate role behaviors
 adjustment to work group’s norms and
values

ACCULTURATION
 Acculturation is the process for resolving
cultural differences and of accomplishing
cultural change and adaptation between
groups.
– Usually there is a merger with a dominant
culture.
– Often it is a process of cultural exchange
between entering members and the
organizational culture of their employers

  • 3. ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE What is Culture: Culture is a system of values, beliefs, shared meanings, norms and traditions that distinguish one group from another.  Based on: 1. identity 2. nationality 3. social class 4. gender 5. Racio-ethnicity 6. the organizational itself

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE  Definition of Organizational Culture: Socially acquired and shared rules of conduct that are manifested in the organization’s artifacts, perspectives, values, and assumptions.  Organizational culture serves as a foundation for the management system and its behaviors and practices
  • 5. Effects of Organizational Culture  Impacts employee motivation  Affects group productivity and performance  Constrains or supports organizational strategies and goals  May foster or hinder innovation  Provides meaning and direction for employees
  • 6. Assumptions of Innovative Versus Stable Cultures INNOVATION: •People are proactive and can be trusted •Truth is found by personal investigation and testing •Future oriented •We can master the environment •Relationships are based on mutual respect and equality STABILITY: •People are lazy and can’t be trusted •Truth resides in the Boss •Oriented to the past or present •We are controlled by our environment •Relationships are based on authority
  • 7. ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIALIZATION The process of conveying the organization's goals, norms and preferred ways of doing things to members. This is done by the:  development of work abilities  acquisition of appropriate role behaviors  adjustment to work group’s norms and values
  • 8. ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIALIZATION SOCIALIZATION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY:  Rituals  Stories  Language  Role Modeling  Formal Methods Training Performance Appraisal Promotion Decisions

ACCULTURATION  Acculturation is the process for resolving cultural differences and of accomplishing cultural change and adaptation between groups. – Usually there is a merger with a dominant culture. – Often it is a process of cultural exchange between entering members and the organizational culture of their employers
