The document discusses research methods for developing new media products. It defines four main research methods - primary, secondary, quantitative, and qualitative research - and outlines their advantages and disadvantages. Primary research involves collecting first-hand data, while secondary research examines existing research. Quantitative research uses statistical analysis and projections, while qualitative research seeks to understand people's opinions and motivations through discussion. The student responses indicate they used secondary and primary research for their year 10 assignments, storing information digitally. They gathered information through online research and videos to develop ideas and would consider additional research methods like quantitative and qualitative for future projects.

Unit 1 research methods worksheet
1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
ā¢ To find out if your target audience would buy your product
ā¢ To find out how much you could sell your product for
ā¢ To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
ā¢ To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Acquiring first-hand data -Address specific issues
-Greater control
-Efficient spending for
information
-Proprietary information
-cost
-time consuming
-not always feasible
Secondary
Examining or reading
someone elseās research
such as in a library
-Ease of access
-Low cost to acquire
-Clarification of research
question
-May answer research question
-Quality of research
-Not specific to researcherās
needs
-incomplete information
-not timely
Quantitative
Quantitative research uses
data collection for statistical
formulas and future
projections
-precise and easy to analyse
-more efficient picture of
results
- can be used to test
hypothesis in experiments
because of its ability to
measure data using statistics.
- a large sample of the
population must be studied in
order for it to be more
statistically accurate.
- context of the study or
experiment is ignored
Qualitative
Qualitative research is about
finding out not just what
people think but why they
think it. Itās about getting
people to talk about their
opinions so you can
understand their motivations
and feelings
-useful
-freedom
- does not need a strict design
plan before it begins.
-gains more detailed
information
-requires more evaluation
-the researcher interprets the
research according to their
own biased view, which skews
the data gathered.
-time consuming
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos) and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
Throughout both units I used primary and secondary research. I used secondary research for specific details/information I
needed to know and for inspiration and ideas. I also used primary for finding out about feedback on my final projects,
asking students for their opinions on my final pieces. I also used primary data for creating my own ideas for each unit.
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 10 units? (e.g. did you book
mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
I typed up important information that I needed for my projects onto a word document and saved it or put it on the
document that I needed that information for and put it onto my blogger. Any important websites I needed I would add
them to the word document in case I needed to access this website again for any additional information.
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos)
and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
For unit 5 I mostly watched videos and reading information on crime drama to help develop our own crime drama/music
video. By doing this it helped to get ideas and inspiration for our videos and what we may want to include in them e.g. a
green screen etc.
For unit 7 I used the internet a lot because I needed to find out all information about my chosen festival (the Isle of Wight
festival) like the line-up, contact, how to get there so that I had valid information to present on my bag to make it look more
professional and it made me more knowledgeable about the festival.
If you didnāt use some of the methods in year 10, would use you them if you were to do your projects again? How
and why would you do this?
Yes I would use them because it will help to develop and improve what I create and add more detail to my projects.
Maybe using quantitative and qualitative research because I didnāt use these types of research in my other units and using
these might develop my ideas more.
