Why am I using this?
I have chosen to use the Canon EOS 60D as it is the most accessible to me. It is a piece of equipment that I
own myself and so I will be able to use it whenever it is needed, which should shorten production time. Not
only this, but I am confident that it will be able to shoot at an extremely high quality and its ability to work well
in low lighting will be very beneficial to me.

Why am I using this?
Like my chosen camera and lens, the SD card is also easily accessible
as it is one I own myself. It also has beneficial key features such as its
fast write speed that will help to extend battery runtime. This means
less time charging and more filming time.

Why am I using this?
A tripod is essential for my filming since it will allow me to gather steady shots and shots at different
heights. It will also give me the ability to steadily pan and tilt when filming certain scenes. I have
chosen to use this particular tripod (the Velbon DF-41 Tripod) since it is another piece of equipment
that is easily available to me.
5. PROPS
For the lip sync scenes, I have purchased a red flashlight to illuminate my actors face as he will
be sat in the dark. Similar set ups are seen in other trip hop music videos; the video for The
Spoils by Massive Attack (featured in my previous research) shows multiple close ups of faces
that are highlighted by coloured lights. I found this to be very visually pleasing and something
that I’d like to try and re-create. The flashlight is the only prop I will be needing.

I will also require the following:
• Fake blood
The violence between the two males will result in a bloody
face and hands for both actors. I will use fake blood for this.
• 6x4inch picture of missing girl
My leading male (male 2 played by Matt Holley) will set up
the narrative by going on a search for an old friend who has
gone missing. He will be carrying around a picture of the
missing girl which he will show at by passers to make it clear
why he is searching the streets.
6. ACTORS
For my music video I will require 3 main male actors. Male 2 will be showing the image of the
missing girl to bypasses, and I will take advantage of friends and locals to fill these roles on the
day of filming.
Male 1 (Lip Syncer)
Rory Giddings, a Ringwood School student, will be starring as the ‘artist’, completing the lip syncs
for my music video. I was keen to for Rory to perform the lip syncs as I was after a young male
who would be able to portray emotion successfully, particularly as Retrograde is such an
expressive song. I feel as if Rory will be able to show this required emotion so that the visuals can
run parallel to the meaningful lyrics of Retrograde. It is also an advantage that Rory is already
familiar with the song; this will minimise time spent on learning lyrics and so will cut production
time.
Male 2
Matt Holley, a Ringwood School student, will act as the male who goes searching for an old friend.
He will be involved in the fight scenes with my third male and will act as the video’s lead role.
Again, I feel he will be able to put on an expressive performance which is particularly important for
Retrograde. I know he will take the role seriously and will perform to a high standard.
Male 3
The character who Matt Holley (Male 2) stumbles across and argues with will be played by Josh
Brown, another Ringwood School student. Similarly to Matt, I am confident that he will put on a
great performance and will be a valuable asset to my music video.
7. COSTUMES
I have decided to stick with simple costumes for my 3 male actors. Anything too
extravagant may distract viewers from the video’s concepts and narrative, and may
also draw attention away from the song lyrics. Fancy clothing would simply not be
relative to the narrative and so would be unnecessary. I must also ensure that my
characters aren’t wearing anything too revealing which may allow them to be
sexualised. Again, this wouldn’t be relevant to the narrative. Having simple costumes
would also help to present my characters as normal and ‘everyday’ individuals,
allowing my audience to relate to the video. However, there will be a few noticeable
differences between the costumes. Male one, who features as the ‘artist’, will wear a
plain tee and jeans. His costume can be particularly simple since his lip syncing
scenes will be filmed in the dark with only a flashlight illuminating his face. As his
facial expressions are the focus, there is no need to place him in specific clothing.
Similarly male 2, played by Matt Holley, will be seen in a plain and simple costume
with the aim to present him as your ‘everyday guy’ and allowing audiences to relate.
Male 3 (Josh Brown) will be dressed slightly differently. He is to be presented as a
thug, willing to cause fights as demonstrated when he mocks the photo of the
missing girl. For this reason, he will be dressed in clothes stereotypically warn by
gangsters and troubled youths: tracksuit top and bottoms etc. The planned costumes
can be observed on the following slide.

These shots feature lip sync. The artist will be posed against a plain backdrop with a
light illuminating his face. I will take advantage of the photography studio at Ringwood
School to film these lip syncs.
