The document proposes a participatory observational documentary about an isolation experiment confining a participant to a single area alone. 2. Our idea
• We plan on basing our participatory observational documentary around an
isolation experiment, such as the one presented in the Island with Bear
Grylls and the movie ‘Old boy’. We want to see what happens to people
when they confined to one area by themselves; how does it effect them
mentally and physically?

3. • We plan on basing the documentary in a group members scout hut, if
possible. We plan on doing it there as it feels very remote and the inside is
fairly empty.
• If we cannot get the scout hut we will use another room i.e.: a members
house or a clearing in the woods.

4. • We also plan on giving ‘trials’ to the participant to complete on a “weekly”
basis to ‘measure their psychological and physical wellbeing’

5. How will it be set out
• We plan to use ‘fly on the wall’ style footage, with cameras placed around the
room in a fashion that is similar to security cameras in the style of layout.

6. • Our editing will be more slow paced, changing mainly from different
angles of the events, with occasional cutaways to interviews and people
outside of the room such as the presenters giving a live reaction to what
is happening inside, family members talking about participant etc. there
may also be cutaways to the participant giving a video diary either
during the experiment or in retrospect.

7. • For mise en scene it will mainly be casual wear, similar toTIWBG in that
they wear the clothes that they arrive in for the entirety of the
documentary.

8. Audience Appeal
• We believe that this will appeal to our audience as this is a fairly new topic to
investigate in a documentary.
• This may appeal to them as it can indicate dysfunctions that can arise from
long term social isolation, something that young people may experience

9. • A majority of our target audience liked the similar programme ‘the island
with Bear Grylls’ which suggests that they will enjoy what we plan on
doing.
• Shows involving trials, such as ‘I’m a celebrity…’, are also popular among
our target audience so the trial aspect of our documentary should also be
appealing to them
