This document discusses the film opening that was created. It uses conventions from horror films such as Blair Witch Project and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The opening features a black title screen with white text and static noise to set the mysterious tone. It shows the rural setting of a field and barn to introduce the lonely location. Costumes of typical camping gear add realism, and a hammer is used as the villain's weapon. Camerawork includes handheld shots to follow characters like Blair Witch. The opening sets up the storyline of teens getting lost in the barn and introduces characters similarly to Trainspotting.

1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCT? (I.E. OF FILM
OPENINGS)
2. TITLE OF THE FILM
For the title of our film we have used a simple black
background with white text. This is accompanied by a
sharp flickering effect along side the noise of static.
This creates an ending to the dream and a start to the
rest of the film and indulges into the mysterious and
chilling film. This is similar to the title or paranormal
activity with the flickering effect
3. SETTING/LOCATION
For our setting we used a field and a pathway to the drive of the
barn, this looks likes a typical Duke of Edinburgh route and has
a good view of the barn from the field. This gives the audience a
good idea of the surroundings and location. The field is deserted
and creates a feel of loneliness for the 4 characters.
4. COSTUMES AND PROPS
For the costumes, we have used typical Camping clothes and
rucksacks. This adds to the realism of the film and is similar to
the costumes the characters wear in “The Blair Witch Project”.
Our choice of weapon for the villain was a hammer because it is a tool that
is used everyday in a rural setting that can we used to make serious
damage. We compared this with the iconic weapon from the “Texas
Chainsaw Massacre”.
5. CAMERAWORK AND EDITING
For the camera work we have used a range of different shots
that fit the convention of a typical Horror film. Using a mixture of
hand-held and establishing and panning shots. We have edited
the shots with added contrast and brightness to create a subtle
dream-like effect. Below is a hand-held POV shot we used to
create the effect of the dairy farmer following the teens. We got
inspiration also from the “Blair Witch Project” with their hand-
held shots following their characters.
6. TITLE FONT AND STYLE
For the title of the film we used a rustic font that would
represent the rural setting and compliment our horror
film. For the titles throughout the opening we used a
similar but slightly different font that would go well
with the shots we
have used.
7. STORYLINE AND SETTING UP THE OPENING
The story line follows the 4 teenagers on there Duke of
Edinburgh walk when they get lost and find a mysterious barn.
The opening sequences is a dream by Ben the main character
and lightly foreshadows the goings on in the rest of the film. This
makes Ben extremely paranoid which he then begins to fall out
with the rest of the group. This is typical of a lot of horror films
when one character is the cautious one and the other characters
do not trust him. For example in “The Cabin in the Woods” one
character is particularly paranoid which stirs up the group a lot.
8. SFX
To make a large quantity of milk to be used in our
opening we using a mixture of water and corn flour.
To make our blood to accompany the shot of the
hammer we used good old fashioned ketchup.
9. GENRE
One way the opening suggest the genre of horror is
by the tension building music used through the dream
sequence. It also is reinforced by the dark mysterious
setting and the hand-held shots accompanied by the
voice of the villain.
10. HOW CHARACTERS ARE INTRODUCED
We introduced the main 4 characters with medium shots of
the characters accompanied by their titles. We chose the
timings for when the characters are speaking so the
audience can identify who is who. This is similar to the
opening of the film Trainspotting which gave us inspiration
for our own titles.
