The location is set in the middle of nowhere, this will tell the viewer its about survival
and that there is no civilization and no people. This makes the viewer feel immersed in
the experience as they understand or know some what situation he is in, as they will
feel for the host/character as he has nobody with him. This will also set the tonne for
the documentary as the tonne feels lonely and scared, this will create sympathy for the
viewer.
The angle:
The angle shows the island and his surroundings as all you can see is greenery, white
sand and the blue sea. This will tell the viewer the island is simple yet dangerous for any
one unexperienced. The angle also shows how skinny he is and that the island is
effecting him, because the lack of water and food he cant find. This will tell the viewer
its not that easy to survive on a deserted island as he is skinny and doesn't look like he's
well.
The Post-Production
The editor has used pictures of his journey to show the audience his progression
through out documentary. The reason the editor has done this is to show the audience
what the island has done to him and how dangerous the island can be. The editor has
also shown Ed Stafford in difficult times to suggests to the audience he's being effected
emotionally rather than physical. The editor has also added in graphics to help the
viewer understand what's the documentary about and what time its going to be on.
The music fits in with everything, the editor has done this because it makes the trailer
more rememberable and understandable.
Reflexive Documentary
This kind of documentary is called a reflexive documentary which is usually is a personal
documentary where the film maker might do pieces to camera. The reflexive
Documentary shows the film makers experiences through his journey and throughout
the documentary. This specific type of documentary will focus on realism and try to
show the subject as it happens. This may mean more raw and uncut footage than a
usual documentary. A good example of a reflexive documentary is Nick Broomfield, as
he makes his documentaries more personal. He does this by keeping to a limited crew
as its just him and a camera operator. The audience can sometimes get see behind the
scenes and how the documentary is recorded. This type of documentary tends to be
more experimental. A good example of a experimental documentary would be
supersize me. In this documentary we follow the life of a documentary film maker
Morgan Spurlock as he eats fast food every day for a month.
The documentary takes Morgan Spurlock on a journey to find out what happens to the
human body, when it has influx of fast food. It shows his personal journey through pain
as he eats from MacDonald's three times a day.

environment. This will suggests to the audience its about a documentary about the survival of other
animals and how they have to hunt and kill their prey to survive in the harsh wild land. The location has
no civilization as you can see in the image, this tells us there will be no people seen through out this
documentary as there will be just wild life and animals co-existing and have a front row seat as you
watch these beautiful animals walk around the earth.
Observational Documentary
The observational documentary is to attempt to simply observe the wildlife with minimum intervention
at all costs. They attempt to provide a faithful record of some activity, as a fly-on-the-wall, with little to
narration or music. An observational filmmaker should not have an opinion on the subject matter and
reflect the opinions of others. Observational documentaries have more of an intimacy with the subjects
as they often self shot by a single director. These types of documentaries are filmed with a mix of action
cameras and larger cameras. The use of action cameras such as go pros means that there are less
disruption throughout the story and they can cover more camera angles. This means more choice in the
edit and a smaller crew and budget is employed. Observational documentaries are interesting to the
viewer because they get an insight into a particular area or profession as they may have never seen
before.

planet. The angle shows the animals running away from something this suggests to the audience
something or someone is after these beautiful beasts. This will excite the viewer as they want to know
what's after the gigantic beasts, therefore they will watch the documentary. Connotation and

This tells us that BBC 1 has the most popular documentary and I can research what their target market is
and base their information with mine. With this information I can decide who to aim my documentary
at, therefore I can widen the target market.

season. It is also is the most watched nature show on Television right now as It has reached 9.2 million
viewers. Most watched natural history show for 15 years. There are also spin offs of the series such as

my documentary on similar and popular documentaries and pick the best parts of each one to fully
improve my documentary to widen the target market, to achieve the largest audience I can get.
The Costume
The costume tells us, the audience that they are wearing survival gear and clothing to protect them
from the heat and clothing to keep them cool, to stop them from overheating. This will excite the
viewer/audience as they will know what sort of climate there going to be facing, for example the
bandana is to protect them form the beating sun and could also be used for a source of filtering system
to clear out the horrible infested water from disease.

6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
They both have survival in all the documentaries I have researched, therefore my target market is going to be survival aspects for example
adventure and the out doors. Another common feature is the style as they both are filmed in a specific style to create the survival vibe to the
viewer. Another common feature is that they both show greenery to the viewer which suggests straight away its to do with the great
outdoors, therefore you know/suggests its to do with survival. It also has similar features through out my research for example the design of
the front covers show the wildlife or some sort of harsh environment. The reason they have done this is because it gives the idea to the
viewer they are going up against harsh environments for your entertainment. The connotation of the landscapes represents the harshness
and despair that they have to face inside themselves to accomplish great achievements. Another connotation is the filter in the “dual
survivor” image, the sandy filter of the image shows/suggests what environment they are going to face. The denotation of the images are
survival typically hot climates and scare amount water. Another denotation is that they are all gorgeous climates with clear blue skies. The
iconography of the images scream out survival documentaries as they include all the characteristics of a documentary. A common feature
seen through out the product I have researched is the Observational Documentary. This type of documentary feature is where the filmmaker
s neutral observer, for example David Attenborough. They will focus on life and how it is observed, it can focus on peoples lives and also
animal lives. They will also film on how they react to different situations. The filmmaker is mostly out of the shot and will focuses more on the
wildlife or people and will not influence on what is happening. Nothing is rehearsed or staged, this means the camera crew have to rush
around, resulting in poor shaky looking footage.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
The aspects of my work I will include are the designs of the front cover, I will add this in because they are all eye catching and I can use it for
my DVD/poster front cover. I will include narration in my final product because it will describe information to the viewer so therefore it will
make the documentary more understandable for the viewer. I will include effects in my final product such as making the screen with a slight
green tinge. I will do this because it will make the viewer feel as if they are in the documentary and as if there surviving with the host. I will
choose the same target audience which is 16-34, therefore it will be easy to attract audiences straight of the bat. I will also teach ways on
how to survive in the English forest and also use a humour to entertain as well, I will do this because the research I have found suggests doing
this makes the audience more comfortable and makes the documentary less boring.

• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
• The strengths of this method is that it describes the image in detail, so therefore in a later date it will come in handy. However this method was very
time consuming.
• The strengths of the method show how the genre is created for the image and gives a new look into the work. However it is worthless as it doesn’t
give me any ideas for my final product.
– Questionnaires
• The strengths of using this method are that it gives you others feed back on your work which is very helpful. Another strength is that gives you ideas
for other opportunities for a different style of documentary.
• The weakness are that the feed back can be biased as it can be sometimes from your friends or family who don’t want to make you upset.
• Other peoples opinions can change your final design into something different and even for the worse.
– Interviews
The interview is great because it also gives you feed back on your final design therefore you can change the design for better
than rather for worse.
The weakness of this is that its time consuming, this can change your quality of your work.
Another weakness is that the you only interview 2 people and this doesn’t give you a wide range of opinions.
– Quantitative research
Quantitative research is made with closed questions as you can get information on both subjects, however the disadvantage of using
quantitative research is that the closed the question is short and to the point, this will mean you are given a small amount of
information. My quantitative survey told me both sides of my documentary trailer with information on both sides of the questions.
– Qualitative research
The advantages of Qualitative research it is more in depth and is more useful finding out about peoples opinions, beliefs and
reasoning. It is most seen in a text or a discussion format or seen when a person has to reflect and expand on their answer. Another
advantage is Qualitative research is presented with open questions. A disadvantage is that the open questions require the
interviewee to explain and expand their answer because of this, the answer needs a lot of detail and reasons why. This can be time
consuming as you will need a detailed answer. My qualitative interview told me a lot of information however this extended the
interview as I had to ask more detail.
26. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
The responses I got were very sensible and mature, this is great because you can see
the possible opportunities you product can go. However there were a minimal of 10
questions which gives a small amount of opportunities to take. Another problem was
it was time consuming and it was hard to come up with questions. This was dreadful
because I couldn’t write enough information about other slides because I was wasting
my time creating questions. Another problem was the questions weren't that specific
which limited my answers and opinions.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
• I disrupted my survey through my friends the advantage of this was quick and simple as
they would be happy to answer my questions. However they could be biased towards
my questions. This would change my idea for my documentary for the worse. An
advantage would be it was quick to create 10 questions however they lack detail and
character. This would effect my final product as the information was not enough for my
analyse. The problem distributing was that its sometimes hard for people who cant find
enough people and therefore you don’t get enough information.
