This document contains pitches for two documentary film ideas. The first is called "Lost Locations" and would explore hidden locations in Sheffield through cinematic style footage and historical facts as well as local myths. It lists potential locations like Shepherd's Wheel and influences like Samsara that showcase everyday beauty. The second is called "Estranged Students" and would share stories of university students who are estranged from their families, interviewing subjects and the support staff at Sheffield Hallam University. It notes contacts already made to participate.
2. PITCH 1 – LOST LOCATIONS
• Exploring the hidden history of Sheffield that many outsiders would not think to
consider, this film would discover these locations in a cinematic style. Some of
these locations may include: shepherds wheel, manor castle and bishops house.
While the majority of the dialogue will be factual, myths and legends surrounding
these locations could easily be incorporated.
4. INTERVIEWS
• At many of these locations there are experts on hand that, with permission, could
provide more detail on the locations than what is available in our research.
• Even without these sources, we would still be able to narrate over our images to
create a factual documentary
5. INFLUENCES
• Samsara & Baraka (D: Ron Fricke) – Cinematic style of every day events or
locations that take your breath away in awe at the beauty of the subjects they
choose to shoot.
• Buzzfeed Unsolved (True Crime Series) – How it is presented in a form of slowly
telling the story behind the crime to then go to the location where it happened
and what occurred. They sometimes ask professionals what they know.
6. PITCH 2 – ESTRANGED STUDENTS
• ‘Estrangement’ is a term mostly used by student finance providers to describe a
student who has no relationship with, or support from, their parents.
• This documentary would include talking to some of these students sharing their
stories and experiences and talking to some of the support team at Sheffield
Hallam as this area is new this year as these students are often unnoticed. This
would have a more typical documentary layout of facts and interviews.
7. CONTACTS
• Within this documentary we would require contact with the
support team at Sheffield Hallam to present some facts
about the percentage of estranged students they’ve had this
year and the kind of help they can offer. I regards to this I
have emailed the team.
• We would also need some estranged students themselves to
share aspects of their stories and experiences to a degree
they’re comfortable with. For this we have a few contacts in
mind who are likely to share.
8. INFLUENCES
• Kicked out: From Care to Chaos – The overall presentation of this documentary as
being presented by a young girl who has experienced the care system, sharing
her story as well as others. BBC documentaries in general also follow a very
formulaic design to present facts and stories.
