UNIVERSAL DESIGN
 A design that allows a wide variety of people to be able to
accomplish or use something to its fullest extent.
 The place or thing is designed for a diverse population from
the very beginning, and doesn’t need adaptation in order to
accommodate certain people.
 The Universal design benefits everyone!
WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN?
 Lesson plans and curriculum are
designed to be universal and reach a
large variety of kids from the
beginning.
 Multiple options and approaches for
accomplishing tasks and learning are
built into the curriculum from day
one.
 Curriculum is no longer based off of
one “average” learner, but rather all
learners; therefore generating more
success for more students.
UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
 Provide multiple means of representation.
 Making sure that the information is perceivable for every child
and that they can understand the information.
 Provide multiple means of action and expression.
 Providing different ways for children to express what they really
know. Through physical activity, expression through drawing or
writing, and/or through executive functions like monitoring
success and setting goals.
 Provide multiple means of engagement.
 Motivate different children in different ways, making what they
are learning or doing a meaningful and relatable experience.
THREE PRINCIPLES OF UDL
 Allow for choices and different paths to accomplish a task, or
learning.
 Present things in different ways in order to accommodate
everyone.
 When planning how to teach a lesson, the teacher must look
at all the barriers or obstacles each of their diverse students
will face, and find ways to get over or around all of these.
 Everyone in the class should be able to communicate and
participate with each other.
HOW TO ACCOMPLISH UDL
 GOALS
 Everyone has their own, achievable goals, and
not everyone’s have to be the same.
 MARERIALS
 Providing everyone with the variety of materials
that they need to succeed.
 METHODS
 The varying ways that a teacher presents
information in order to reach everyone.
 MEANS OF ASSESSMENT
 Assessing children in different ways is also
important.
 CURRICULUM
 Making sure that the curriculum applies to and
can be related to and understood by all children.
WHAT PARTS OF THE CLASSROOM
