2. Extra note
• Me and my partner from our coursework
group Taslima Begum did this survey together
but we are analysing it separately.
3. The first question on our survey was do you enjoy listening to newscasts and this is a good
first question as it sets a base of what is to come next and if someone doesn’t enjoy
newscasts then we either have to create something for them to enjoy or leave them be. The
13 out of the 20 who did the survey do enjoy listening to newscasts and the rest of the 7 do
not. This gives us a rough idea of how many people actually will listen to our newscast.
4. The second question was how
long do you prefer an entire
newscast to be and this
question was asked so we
know how long our newscast
to be. We need an idea of this
because if we run it for too
long it would not match the
answers of our target
audience as the majority was
40 % and they said their ideal
broadcast should be 1-5
minutes long. We need to
know this information so we
have an idea of how long our
broadcast should be. If its too
long for our audiences
preference then they will lose
interest in it so we should do
what will make our viewers
happy and what can
potentially increase our views
as well.
5. The third question was what topics do you think should be mentioned on a newscast
and we need to know this so we know what sort of news to base our newscast off. The
majority both with 60% chose crime and weather so we should ideally base our
newscast on those topics.
This is important because we
need to know what interests our
target audience so we can
broadcast items of their interest
and not things the minority like.
6. The fourth question was how long
would you like the duration of a
single article on the newscast to be
and these results allow us to take
into consideration of how much
time we should spend on a single
topic. 60% chose 2 minutes so that
would be the ideal duration. We
need to take this into consideration
because if the majority of the
audience don’t want a long
broadcast on one topic then they
will lose interest and not watch it
anymore. By listening to what
they want it will increase our views
along with pleasing the audience.
7. The fifth question asked how many presenters the audience preferred, this is useful for
us as we know how many the majority want and from our results we can see that the
majority voted for two presenters at 75%. It is important for us to know this as we want
the audience to enjoy it as much as possible and if they prefer two presenters we should
give them what they please. It can also increase our viewers.
8. The sixth question we asked was what types of radio stations they prefer. We asked this
because it gives us a clear understanding of what style of radio they enjoy and we could
get a few ideas from those stations to guide us on how to lead ours. The stations with
the highest percentage of 50% was BBC Radio 1 so this gives us a clear path on how we
should direct our newscast and maybe incorporate some of their ideas into our one and
maybe do the same news choice.
9. Our seventh question was
where do you listen to the
radio the most. We asked
this because it would give us
a idea of what sort of news
to broadcast depending on
where someone is for
example the highest
percentage we had was for
car at 45% and when many
people are driving they
either tend to listen to
gossip or if they're going
somewhere important they
would like to listen to either
weather reports or any road
mishaps. We can infer what
sort of news to talk about.
10. Our eighth question asked would you rather a newscast to inform or entertain you. We
asked this so we would get an idea of whether to inform or entertain our target audience.
The largest percentage was for both and only 2 out of 20 chose either inform or entertain.
This clearly shows us that in our newscast we have to inform and entertain for the benefit
of our audience. If we don’t do both then our audience may not be pleased.
11. Our ninth question asked if the audience prefers discussions and interviews to be on a
newscast. The majority of the people we asked said yes (13 out of 20). We wanted to know
this information so we could include interviews and discussions based on our audiences
feedback. If they said no we would know not to include them as it would bore the audience
and stop the from listening to our newscast. If we do include discussions and interviews it
will please our current target audience.
12. Our last question was a little additional question that asked if the audience would prefer
to join in on discussions via phone/social media. The response we got was 70% said yes.
We asked this so we could get an idea of how many people would be willing to interact
with us and we can also make sure we are able to allow them to contact us. The
discussions can be easy to discuss so our audience aren’t too flustered to be on air and
we can also make them interesting so other listeners dot get bored.
