1. What have you learned
from your audience
feedback?
By Jack Beale-Burchell
2. O After we showcased our documentary, radio trail
and double page spread article, to a group of
people, we streamlined the audience feedback
process by handing out a questionnaire with
open and closed questions in order to get a mix
of statistics and opinions. We believed a
questionnaire was the best way to collect results
as asking everyone individually and conducting
focus groups would take far too much time, and
wouldn’t give us any responses in the form of
quantitative data.
3. O To look at the results of the qualitative data, we
found out the many people believed that we did not
need to improve on either of the two ancillary tasks
in terms of content, but some people thought that
the background music on the radio trail wasn’t
suitable for the advertising of the documentary with
28% of the people we asked believing it wasn’t
suitable. But this doesn’t really teach us
anything, to justify that comment I believe that the
music wasn’t to other people’s preference, for
example other people like other genres and that
could be the cause of this response. But as 28% is
a minority, we feel the music was appropriate from
the responses of the rest of the group.
4. O Also from our feedback for the radio trailer yet again 28% said
that the trailer wasn’t effective in advertising the
documentary, in the sense that it didn’t make them want to
watch the documentary. This can be put down to a few
conclusive judgements, for example some people may have
found the actual content of the trailer itself dull or
boring, others could have found that the trailer didn’t actual
make any effect on them. Finally the last judgement could be
that the radio trailer itself isn’t an effective advertising
technique, and maybe other forms such as television
adverts, posters and magazine ads could have had a greater
effect. But yet again this is a minority percentage, which
draws the conclusion that radio trail itself was somewhat an
effective piece of advertising.
5. O When looking at the responses we
received from the documentary itself, they
were overall very positive, which to us as
a group was somewhat a
surprise, considering we asked the people
we had handed the questionnaires to, to
answer them honestly and truthfully, so
we could get a realistic set of data.
6. O The data we received from the documentary was
extremely positive 100% of the people we asked
thought it was edited in a coherent way and that the
narration was relevant and to the point. This shows
that key elements of the documentary were
extremely professional. Also 100% of the people we
asked thought it followed codes and conventions of
real documentaries, also they thought the
documentary was well structured and put together.
These results help us learn that the documentary
was extremely professional and was produced very
well. A further 94% thought that the opening
sequence of the documentary caught their attention
and looked very professional, which further shows
that we had edited it and produced it to a highly
professional level.
7. O Here is selection of the quantitative feedback that
we received, the responses were based on the
answers of Yes, No and No Answer.
8.
9. O To conclude we were surprised that the
documentary was as well received as it
was, and the feedback shows that a large
majority of the people we had asked thought it
was extremely professional and followed the
codes and conventions of current and existing
documentaries, which is what we had set out to
create. This teaches us that the documentary
was an overall success.
