• Providing temporary fuel storage tanks including resupplying of fuel during the construction period at each

A Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera became stuck in the sanitary sewer line located in the Old Keene Mill Shopping Center. Wastewater Design and Construction Division mobilized to the site with the on-call contractor to begin the 15-foot excavation to replace 50 feet of broken gravity sewer. Because the work was within a shopping center parking lot, the project team worked the night shift to limit disturbance to the community. After four days of work, the camera was retrieved, and the pit was backfilled. This project was substantially complete on August 27, 2021.

The Flatlick Branch Phase II Stream Restoration project included restoration of 4,600 linear feet of Flatlick Branch and its tributaries, provided a sustainable channel form, pattern and profile to meet today’s developed landscape, added in-stream habitat enhancement and flood plain restoration, rock structures to provide grade control throughout the channel and provide energy dissipation, and the planting of the stream areas with native vegetation.

The work on this project included investigation and repair to an 8-inch sewer line in Waterway Drive which had been previously lined with a plastic liner system. The project location was in Waterway Drive from Cavalier Court to the vicinity of Half Moon Circle. The project involved setting up a bypass system to remove sewage from the line so the pipe could be properly cleaned and inspected. Following this process, it was determined the plastic liner was causing capacity issues. It was determined that the liner could be repaired using internal methods and no excavation was needed. In addition, the five manholes associated with the segments of pipe in the project area were also rehabilitated. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

The Quander Road Walkway project was substantially completed on June 15, 2021. The project included construction of approximately 1,800 linear feet of five-foot wide concrete sidewalk along the west side of Quander Road with curb and gutter, refuge island with ramps, curb-cut ramps, driveway aprons, vast storm drainage improvements, utility relocations, asphalt pavement, pavement markings, and roadway widening to provide minimum lane widths of 11 feet between Emmett Drive and Stokes Lane.

The North Shore Drive Sidewalk Improvements project has been Substantially Completed. The overall project scope was to increase pedestrian safety along North Shore Drive . The new pedestrian walkway consists of 2,315 lineal feet of 5-foot wide concrete sidewalk and 224 lineal feet of 6-foot wide asphalt walking path. The project started approximately 500 feet West of Sycamore Valley drive and extended to approximately 400 feet East of Links Drive. Also, along with the improved pedestrian access, upgrades were made to the storm drain system, a new concrete pad was placed for the existing bus shelter and the Eastbound lane of North Shore Drive was milled and new asphalt and striping was installed.

This project included construction and rehabilitation of tertiary process facilities located at the Noman M. Cole Jr., Pollution Control Plant. The monomedia filters at the DD facility provide tertiary clarification after the secondary processes. The waste backwash water pump station at EE facility conveys waste backwash water from the DD and FF filters back to the start of the process at the flash mix building. This project was substantially complete on June 24, 2020.

This project included rehabilitation of the 21 MGD Little Hunting Creek Pump Station (LHCPS). Located at 8600 Stockton Parkway, Alexandria, Virginia, this pump station is the third largest pump station in the Fairfax County System. LHCPS is constructed on a 10-acre parcel that was previously utilized as the Little Hunting Creek Sewer Treatment Plant 44B. LHCPS was constructed and placed into service in 1983. Flow from LHCPS is pumped through a 30-inch force main across Little Hunting Creek to a receiving structure approximately 4,500 feet away on Surrey Court. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

Little Hunting Creek Pump Station Rehabilitation

This project included construction and rehabilitation of three equalization basins and ancillary facilities located at the Noman M. Cole, Jr. Pollution Control Plant. The basins temporarily store overflow wastewater resulting from heavy storm events that exceed the plant’s treatment capacity. Work included construction of a new concrete liner system for Equalization Basin QQ1, rehabilitation of existing pump stations and addition of a new underdrain pump station and stormwater pump station. Construction of a new flood protection system and addition of a new check dam and sluice gate in Hogge Run for emergency spill protection. The new liner system for QQ1 includes a concrete slab with an HDPE membrane liner constructed over a pipe underdrain collection system.

The Flatlick Sewer Rehabilitation Project included rehabilitation of approximately 2,500 linear feet of existing 24-inch diameter pipe and 650 linear feet of existing 15-inch diameter pipe using the Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining method. The lining was cured using UV Light. In addition, 11 manholes were rehabilitated throughout the Flatlick Branch stream valley in Chantilly, Virginia. This project was substantially complete on January 4, 2021.

During a routine Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera inspection by Wastewater Collection Division (WCD), it was found that 45 linear feet of 8-inch asbestos reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between MH-292 to MH-291 was within imminent danger of failing. The bottom of the RCP was missing within the 45 linear feet of repair and the pipe was on the verge of surcharging. After an immediate pre-construction meeting with Merrifield Nursery, it was agreed to work from 6pm-10am everyday of the week to avoid disruption and potentially placing patrons at risk during the biggest time of the year for Merrifield Garden Center. The contractor mobilized to the site and began the 20-foot excavation to replace 45 linear feet of broken gravity sewer. The project started on March 14th, 2022 and was substantially complete on March 23, 2022.

The Sully Basins Stormwater Pond Retrofits project was substantially completed on April 19, 2022. The project is located within the Cub Run watershed. The project consisted of repair and enhancement of multiple stormwater basins, 0326DP, 0964DP and 1484DP. The project also included construction of new stone cascades, stone weir basin structures and the construction of wetlands with high and low marsh areas. The project will facilitate improved sediment removal and improve downstream water quality using forebays and micro pools. Aquatic and natural habitat were also added within the three basins.

The Clarks Crossing Road Pedestrian Access Improvement project improved the pedestrian and bicycle access along Clarks Crossing Road and was substantially completed on March 23, 2022. This project completed the missing link between the existing sidewalk at Brookside Lane and the previously constructed sidewalk along Clarks Crossing Road. The scope of this project included construction of asphalt sidewalk, curb ramps, curb and gutter, drainage improvements along Brookside Lane and asphalt mill/overlay on Clarks Crossing and Brookside Lane.

The Lake Barton Dredging, Restoration, and Riser Modification project was substantially completed on December 29, 2021. The project is located within the Pohick Creek watershed. The project consisted of dredging and removal of approximately 19,100 cubic yards of sediment to restore the sediment trapping capacity and improve water quality. The project also included construction of new sediment forebays, in-lake haul roads, and riser modifications (new mid-level sluice gate and cold-water intake) to facilitate future maintenance, stabilize the shoreline, and improve downstream water quality. Project Details Long Branch and New Alexandria Pump Station Fuel Tank Replacement Capital Facilities/Wastewater Design and Construction Division/Collections Branch Project Overview: • Abandonment of the two existing underground fuel tanks, including coordination, notifications, sampling and reporting to regulatory authorities. • Removal of existing buried and exposed fuel lines, day tanks, pipes, electrical, associated appurtenances at two locations. • Furnishing and installation of two new aboveground fuel tanks, access platforms, day tanks, fuel polishing systems, pipes and appurtenances, electrical and associated appurtenances at two locations. • Providing temporary fuel storage tanks including resupplying of fuel during the construction period at each of the project sites. • Site cleanup and restoration. Project Description: This project included removal and replacement of fuel storage tanks for stand by generators at the Long Branch Sanitary Sewer Pump Station and New Alexandria Stormwater Pump Station. Existing underground storage tanks were replaced with new above ground fuel tanks. The project included installation of piping, valves, fuel polishing systems, day tanks, and appurtenances, as well as associated site work. This project was substantially complete on October 29, 2021.
