Stormwater Wastewater Consolidation
Stormwater Planning Division (SWPD):
• Oversees the MS4 (Municipal Separate Stormwater Sewer System) permit, stream monitoring programs,
and stormwater project designs.
Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division (MSMD):
• Maintains over 1,300 miles of stormwater conveyance system, about 2,000 County owned stormwater
management facilities, inspects and enforces about 4,000 private stormwater management facilities, and
maintains County-owned trails, sidewalks, pedestrian bridges, public street name signs and designated
transportation facilities and snow removal at County facilities.
Wastewater Collection Division (WCD):
• The county’s wastewater collection and conveyance system includes more than 3,330 miles of sanitary
sewer lines, 65 pumping stations, and 57 flow metering stations. The county monitors these components
and provides a 24-hour trouble response service for sewer backups.

• Fairfax County outdoor
lighting standards
designed to:
– Reduce the impacts of
glare, light trespass and
overlighting.
– Promote safety and
security.
– Encourage energy
conservation.
The Ordinance requires the use of full cutoff lighting
fixtures for all walkways, parking lots, canopy and
building/wall mounted lighting and all lighting fixtures.
Fixtures adjacent to residentially zoned properties must
conform to fixed mounting heights and provide
supplemental opaque shielding to further reduce glare.

Building Design and Construction Division Background 4 Stormwater Wastewater Consolidation Stormwater Planning Division (SWPD): • Oversees the MS4 (Municipal Separate Stormwater Sewer System) permit, stream monitoring programs, and stormwater project designs. Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division (MSMD): • Maintains over 1,300 miles of stormwater conveyance system, about 2,000 County owned stormwater management facilities, inspects and enforces about 4,000 private stormwater management facilities, and maintains County-owned trails, sidewalks, pedestrian bridges, public street name signs and designated transportation facilities and snow removal at County facilities. Wastewater Collection Division (WCD): • The county’s wastewater collection and conveyance system includes more than 3,330 miles of sanitary sewer lines, 65 pumping stations, and 57 flow metering stations. The county monitors these components and provides a 24-hour trouble response service for sewer backups. Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) Stormwater Planning Division (SWPD) Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division (MSMD) Wastewater Collection Division (WCD)
