Mass merchants generated 34% of the sales of best sellers, indicating that the readers were leaning towards low price options.
Information regarding purchasing power or income distribution of the readers is not available.
2.1.3 Social–Cultural environmentBook club was a trend in the United States and being a member of a book club meant commanding respect in the
society.
The society had a special place for the so called "badge" books. The works of James Patterson did not enjoy similar status which resulted in lower
readership amongst the group of omnivorous readers.
2.1.4 Technological environmentTechnologies used in book printing and publishing are hardcover, paperback, electronic books, audio books.
Hardcover books fetch the maximum profits for the publisher and author.
Demands for E–books are increasing as it is a low cost sales outlet. eBooks cost between $4.99 and $6.99 per book where as hardcover cost $21 to $27
and paperbacks about $7.99Internet and email usage has not affected the demand for books a great deal. Demand for books has been consistent at
about 1.1 billion over the past decade.
Technological advancement has lead to an increase in the average web surfing time. However, the online retailers have accounted for a mere 2% of
the sales of best seller fiction in the year 2004.

Non–Fiction Book: Hiroshima by John Hersey
Journal Entry #1: From whose point of view is the story told? What other voices could tell the story? Be sure to explain how the story would be
different from this other, new perspective.
Hiroshima by John Hersey is told from a narrator's point of view. Although many books are told this way, I feel that if the story was told from the
victim's point of the view it would make the book more meaningful. For example the narrator says "... and for a time the child had breathed normally
and seemed alright; then suddenly it had died" (Hersey 58). If the point of view of this sentence came from the mother who lost her child it would
make the seen much more dramatic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John Green structured this book by splitting it into two sections, before and after. For instance in the before section of the book Pudge says, "So I
walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." This quote
shows how the whole before section of the book was created to establish all the relationships with the main character, especially with Alaska. In the
after part of the section Pudge says "So I know she forgives me, just as I forgive her. Thomas Edison's last words were "It's beautiful over there." "I
don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere and I hope its beautiful." This quote shows how the main character realized his feelings and
fell in love with Alaska in the after part of the book. Overall the way John Green structured the book really made me feel like I was a part of Pudge's
life. Because the book it realistic I felt the happiness and sorrows of all the characters

Why We Should Banning Books Be Banned
Banning books has been happening for a very long time within the education system. Parents and other adults are demanding that specific books
stay out of the grasp of their innocent children, even high school students. This paper will be covering three reasons why certain books shouldn't be
banned just because parents don't agree with the material inside the pages. The main points I will cover are, first: knowledge shouldn't be kept from
one age group just because some people don't agree with the subject matter. Second: Many challenged books could help people get a abetter idea of
the world they live in and their place in it. Last: books are a portal to different life experiences and reading encourages empathy and social–emotional
development. Expanding on that first point is the fact that parents may control what their own children read, but don't have a right to restrict what
books are available to other people. You may ask others not to judge you for how you raise your kids, but that goes the same for books in school
libraries. Parents who don't like specific books can have their kids "opt out" of an assignment without infringing on the rights of others.... Show more

Robie H. Harris, author of frequently challenged children's books including It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing up, Sex, and Sexual
Health, stated, "I think these books look at the topics, the concerns, the worry, the fascination that kids have today... It's the world in which they're
living." Many books that have long been considered to be required reading to become educated about literature and American history are frequently
challenged, such as: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, and
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper

Ender's Game Analysis
It's Raining Books I embraced what it means to be a real reader at a young age. I didn't merely read books, I LIVED books. My second grade teacher
insisted her students write about their favorite books and why we chose that specific book. Easy peasy lemon squeezy Mrs. Laforte! Gazing down at
the paper on my beloved cubby desk, the choice was clear: Dinosaurs Days by Joyce Milton. "I love this book because I love dinosaurs. I even have
dinosaur toys!" (From an adorable little boy a.k.a. Bradley). It was around this time when I delved into solely fiction novels such as Narnia, which
undoubtingly influenced how I viewed the world and its inhabitants. Nearly everyone daydreams when there is a certain lack of stimulation, but I'd bet

Fortunately, there is always that flowing river of books from which I can fish out fresh stories. Over the past year, I've been unable to shake visions
of the giant sandworms (from Frank Herbert's Dune) erupting from the open desert, causing ripples that would cause the Tyrannosaurus Rex to shake
in its metaphorical boots. Oh how I yearned to embark on a journey of self–discovery like Bink in A Spell For Chameleon, encountering familiar yet
foreign mythological beasts originating from various legends (not excluding the bare–chested creatures of course). Holden Caulfield whispers "phony"
in my ear to this day whenever I'm presented with deceit. Books will wiggle their way into your mind, for they wield the power to change

Library Donation Books
This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted
through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are
given to the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages.
Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean
Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a
public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion's online library page using the term "handling gift or donated books". I
selected Kay Ann Cassell's article "Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US." Cassell's article provides an overview of guidelines to be
used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library's Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to
follow a policy that explains the purpose of the library's collection, what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials are

Kill A Mockingbird : A Historical Fiction Book Written By...
To Kill a Mockingbird To Kill a Mockingbird is a historical fiction book written by Harper Lee. Scout Finch and her brother Jem Finch live in
sleepy Maycomb County Alabama around the 1930s. The pair soon meet Dill, the nephew of Aunt Rachel, who becomes their summer friend. They
soon become obsessed with their mysterious neighbor who seldom is seen in public, named Boo Radley. Their father, Atticus, is one of the town
lawyers who takes on case that changes the children's lives. This culminates in their eventual understanding of the mysterious events in Maycomb
county that cause discord among its residents. Part one of the book focuses mostly on the adventures of Jem, Scout, and Dill as they become
intrigued upon hearing the town gossip about their neighbor Boo Radley. The kids end up creating a game based on Boo's supposed story and begin
to dare each other to touch his house and reenact his story based on rumors circulating through the town. Their father catches them, prompting them to
conceal their activities. Scout later learns Boo's true story from information relayed to her by Miss Maudie, one of her neighbors. Scout learns that
Boo's parents locked him in the house after had terrorized the community. Soon, summer fades away and Scout starts her first day of first grade where
she meets her new teacher, Miss Caroline, who doesn't allow Scout to read at home, despite this being one of Scout's favorite activities. Atticus makes a

Personal Narrative Analysis
Since childhood, I have been enamored with reading. This passion comes from my mother who advocates literacy to my siblings and me. Elementary
school teachers regularly admonished me for hiding a novel behind a textbook, or in my lap, and sneaking glances whenever possible. When school
dismissed, my nose would be buried inside a book, and I read anything I could get my hands on: my brother's books, my mom's Women's Day
magazines, and even the backs of cereal boxes. Snuggled up in blankets, I grabbed the latest Magic Treehouse and plunged into magical worlds for
countless hours. Every summer break, I checked out numerous paperbacks for my library's Reading Program.

The Essay 'Book War' By Wang Ping
Today, no one seems to give much value of literary works or reading. Not because it doesn't give anything beneficiary, but because not everyone had
the urged to at least finish a book. We now live in a world where social medias almost dominates our daily activities. It's unlikely to have a place for us
to consume a non–fiction or fiction book. As absurd as it sounds but that's how people often think. We now live in an egalitarian society, where
everyone is given the freedom and right of its own.
An essay titled "Book War" by Wang Ping tackles about thetime where reading is banned, and how dangerous it is to posses any types of books. It
didn't exactly tackles the benefits of reading, but it did portray the essence of finishing a book and the

Catcher In The Rye Should Not Be Banned Essay
Controversial books are normally challenged to preserve a safe idea of the world around us to kids and young adults specifically, who may find it
hard to process strenuous ideas that imply the world is not as easy and wonderful as it seems. Books such as The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
are constantly challenged due to the profanity and inappropriateness of the book. Many parents and teachers are concerned that upon reading the book,
students will change their perspective on life, authority, and non–conformity for the worst. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned because it's
very relevant to teens this day and age and it has a strong impact with a powerful theme and delivered in a manner that teens are familiar with and can
understand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Catcher in the Rye is realistic in the sense that it does not deprive the reader of the protagonist's true thoughts and it does not shield the reader
from the depressing and negative state the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, is in most of the time. This book digs deep beneath the surface of a teen
that is struggling just like many teens in real life do as well. Holden does not know what he wants to do and he is trying to find a purpose in life for
him since he feels alone, depressed, angry, and resentful all the time. The article (Cart): "A Literature of Risk: Teens Dealing with Violence and Other
Risky Behaviors Can Get Help From Young Adult Fiction" states that "Risky behaviors remain very real factors in the daily lives of 21st

teens." Which is why reading a book such as The Catcher in the Rye is beneficial because it has to do with what goes on in the teen society today.
Teens are involved in drugs, alcohol, and violence like the article states and even though The Catcher in the Rye is fiction, it is not too far off on
depicting what a teen goes through, therefore making the story

NON–FICTION BOOK REPORT "The powerful and the strong are not always what they seem." David and Goliath – Underdogs, Misfits and the Art
of Battling Giants is an informative and thought–provoking non–fiction book written by Malcolm Gladwell. This 305–page book begins with the
Biblical story of David and Goliath, followed by an explanation of how society views this classic battle the wrong way, which prepares readers for its
message. This introductory story is followed by nine chapters, each one telling a symbolic story of modern battles between "David and Goliath", in

In a broad sense, the audience of David and Goliath is any person who enjoys reading and is knowledgeable about popular books. However, this
group is quite different than Gladwell's intended audience. Every chapter addresses a different group of people, and since they are directly
mentioned, these groups have the most to gain from this book. The groups are given specific examples of people with similar lives and issues as
them, and Gladwell proposes ideas that would benefit them. Specifically, these groups are immigrants, minorities, college students, parents, people
with disabilities, war victims, civil rights advocates, and victims of traumatic experiences. Malcolm Gladwell tries to change people's opinion of
underdogs, and he tries to help groups in difficult situations. Malcolm Gladwell uses the Biblical story of David and Goliath and other modern–day
versions to demonstrate his three main points; that there are disadvantages to advantages, advantages to disadvantages, and that there are some
desirable disabilities. Gladwell states that what he "was trying to do with his book was get people to take a step back from easy assumptions about
what makes the most sense." (2) Another purpose of Malcolm Gladwell's book is to convince people never to underestimate any group or individual
with a forced weakness or disadvantage. In all nine chapters, there are underdogs facing difficult challenges. The ending of each chapter's story has

Analyzing Fiction Book 'The Brave'
Fiction books have helped me know why people are so worried about bullying. I have read a book called The Brave when I was in eleventh grade for a
free read that showed me how common and serous bullying can be. It has also showed me that our generation needs to learn to have respect for each
other in and outside of school so bullying will start to go away. In books that I have read in school in the past that dealt with bullying were far worse
than what people consider bullying today. In most cases the bullying is on a very serious level in books now a days and could cause the victim a lot of
physical, mental, and emotional harm from what the characters say and do. Bullying inside and outside of school is very serious in this generation both

point? What kind of message are you putting in the innocent minds of young people who read your book? Visions of murder I do not find appropriate
for my children or any children–even adults to read. Are we to be entertained by murder which is immoral and sinful?" Wortis questions the
originality of the author of the letter given his or her confusion of the plot, failure to recognize Jonas's horror to the possibility of the baby's

Persuasive Essay: Why Books Should Not Be Banned
Book banning has been around for hundreds of years. We need to stop it now! Books should not be banned because it is hard to find books that kids
want to read, parenting, and it can stop people from learning. Some may say that banning books is good so we can protect our children from bad
contact such as racism, bad language, "anti ethic", and "anti family" but kids need to learn about the real world at some point. First off, Kids might
love reading certain books such as Captain Underpants, that might not be as serious but at least they are reading. The books that are banned are the ones

Banning Of Slaughterhouse-Five
Banning a book is when a person or group takes away a book from the public or a majority group (Wilson, 844). Books taken from the public are
mostly banned for its materials or controversial topics, however, a handful of novels were able to avoid being taken off shelves. A novel that was able
to avoid this is Slaughterhouse–Five, the book is banned in schools around the United States and the reason for this is sexual situations, violent content,
and strong language within the story, but a majority of schools currently allow it (Paulson, 07A). However, this novel shouldn't be banned because
people have freedom to read, content shouldn't be filtered or controlled and any topic should be free to the public. The banning of books goes back ...

When Billy, the protagonist, explains to the Tralfamadorians how humans are horrible creatures, he says "And I have lit my way in a prison at
night with candles from the fat of human beings who were butchered by the brothers and fathers of those school girls who were boiled" (
Vonnegut, 116). Billy explains what horrors humans do to one another, but he's only laughed at because the aliens consider that as a stupid joke.
As Billy travels in time, the book shifts from morbid scenes to sexual scenes that leave the reader feeling uncomfortable. One example is Billy on
his honeymoon and the author wrote " Across the water were lights of Gloucester. Billy was on top of Valencia, making love to her" (Vonnegut,
118). The story describes the sexual situation until the two characters fall asleep, in addition to this the profanity in the story can be found on almost
every other page throughout the entire story. The strong language within the paragraphs can be found in the moments Billy is back in World War 2
as a prisoner. During the train ride to the prison camp, Billy tries to sleep but his fellow soldiers tell him " Not with me, you son of a bitch"
(Vonnegut, 78). Billy's fears cause him to whimper while he sleeps, and it cause the other people to hate him for waking them up.

Free College Admissions Essays: My Interest In Reading
My interest in reading started at an early age, before kindergarten. I have my mom to thank for reading a book or two to me at night before bed.
My mom has told me that because she was a stay at home mom before I started school, it was her main goal to teach me as much as she could by
herself, before any teachers had the chance to, and that included reading a couple children's books to me every night. My grandpa had a hand in this
too; he bought me a Dick and Jane storybook and before long, I had the entire book read by myself.

Literary Devices Utilized in Thomas Foster's Book "How to...
The only real way to truly understand a story is to understand all aspects of a story and their meanings. The same goes for movies, as they are all
just stories being acted out. In Thomas Foster's book, "How to Read Literature Like a Professor", Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients
of a story. He discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The devices discussed in Foster's book can be found in
most movies as well, including in Quentin Tarantino's cult classic, "Pulp Fiction". This movie is a complicated tale that follows numerous characters
involved in intertwining stories. Tarantino utilizes many devices to make "Pulp Fiction" into an excellent film. In this essay, I will demonstrate how...

His reason to go there is that he was asked by his boss. He faces trials and tribulations along the way, including having to enter and win a dance
competition with Mia and Mia overdosing on heroine, which she found in Vincent's jacket pocket. In the end, Vincent asks Mia is the events of the
evening can stay between them and Mia agrees. The final outcome of Vincent's quest is that the two form a friendship with trust and respect. This
mini story is just one example of how quests are used in "Pulp Fiction". Archetypes or symbols are described in Foster's book as being easy to
identify but almost impossible to define. According to Foster, everyone wants a symbol to mean something incredibly specific (Foster 97). In "Pulp
Fiction", the most prominent archetypes are the briefcase and the band–aid. Throughout the film, Marsellus Wallace wears a band–aid on the back of
his neck and seeks out a briefcase which has been taken from him. The contents of the briefcase and the reason for the band–aid are never revealed
throughout the movie. Whenever Marsellus does not have his briefcase, he is shown with the band–aid on the back of his neck and whenever he has
his briefcase, the band–aid is gone. Anytime the briefcase is opened, the only thing seen is a bright golden light emanating from the case. Each
character who sees what is inside of the case appears enthralled and amazed with the contents. A very popular theory about the meaning of the case and
band–aid is that perhaps the

I can not recall any memories before learning how to read. I feel like the moment that I learned to shape the world with my mouth and my mind, I was
brought to consciousness. The earliest memories I have of enthusiastically reading mesh, and loop, and intertwine with each other. The sensations of
thumbing through small wooden–like books of simple nursery rhymes, coincide with the clean scent of what libraries smell like. I remember the
sunlight hitting the leather car seats as my dad drove me to the neighborhood library and the tilting wobble of the world as I made a fast pace through
the building's looming glass doors. I have memories of day–minutes and split–second afternoons spent in a cozy grey–walled library partitioned only
by a long wooden table, surrounded by people reading books. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ever since I was a child, my favorite type of books to read were novels. I was never really fond of picture books and moved onto chapter books as
soon as I could get my hands on them. I specifically enjoy fiction novels. Supernatural (not fantasy), realistic, action, drama, and comedy are my favorite
genres. What attracts me to fiction is the way fictional stories challenge my imagination. Fiction stretches my mind to create new worlds, meet
non–existent people, and entertain previously unfathomable situations. I enjoy writing fiction in order to further elaborate on the experiences that
reading fiction has given me.
Outside of fiction, I enjoy reading about different cultures, mostly on their varying practices and lores. I want to understand the actions of others and
the cultural origins and implications of their actions. Often times, I use the knowledge I gain on different cultures as a basis for the stories I

Historical Fiction Book Report of The Hope by Herman Wouk
Historical Fiction Book Report:
The Hope by: Herman Wouk
The book The Hope is the story of Zev Barak, Benny Luria, Sam Pasternak, Kishote, four of Israel's army officers during the major battles and
struggles of Israel from 1948 until 1967. The War of Independence, The Six Day War, and the 1956 Sinai Campaigns were all major events that had
major effects on Israel.
The book starts out with the war of independence in the town of Latrun with the Haganah 7th brigade. The battle of Latrun was a battle that took place
in beginning phases of the war. This battle was a failure to the Haganah 7th brigade, which was newer formed unit. The main road between Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem which was commanded by the Latrun fortress. Arab forces were trying to take over the fortress and deny jews from entering into
Jerusalem. This particular battle and the events depicted around and about the battle in the book are events and occurrences of actual history but it
is a simplified version of the events, of course. But the things that are not actual or real things in history are the characters. Sam Pasternak is the
fictional character used to illustrate the tasks of Colonel Chaim Herzog which was a Israeli army officer who became an army general, later a
popular historian of the military, and then took on Israel's envoy to the UN, he even took on two terms as President of Israel. The story of "Burma
Road" in the book, like the battle of Latrun, is simplified. All though, in the

The Pros And Cons Of Banning Of Books In High Schools
Censoring challenged books in high schools falsified constitutional freedom and robs young adults of potentially enriching literature. Some believe
they can deceive today's youth. Controlling what students read in their learning environment is not up to parents, it is up to the individuals in charge
of the school district. Another key point is people who ban books with content that tell the truth about the real world are only blinding people of the
truth. Lastly, books, to the readers, can be an escape to the diverse experiences of life and social–emotional growth. Banning of books is not for the
benefit of the common good, it is to blind society of the First Amendment and the real world. Parents may be able to control what their own children
read, but they do not have the right to restrict what books are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Creativity is stifled by the strict censorship and regulation of books – as only books that conform to the ideals and beliefs of the censoring party are
published" ("What are the pros and cons of censoring books?"). Young readers learn from gathering information from books. If their selection of
reading is limited to the minds of those providing them, how will they learn to be creative thinkers? Furthermore, creativity is often a means of
understanding the world. It is a means of exploring and understanding the world around us. George Orwell shared that putting pieces together and
seeing things more clearly was one of the four ways we pursue creativity. "To see things as they are," George Orwell wrote, "to find out true facts and
store them up for the use of posterity." "There is something called the First Amendment"

The Sixth Extinction Elizabeth Korlbert Summary
The non–fiction book that I decided to read was, "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History" by Elizabeth Kolbert. What led me to picking this book
was that it seemed the most interesting out of all of the non–fiction book selections. Since I already knew most of the reasons why animals went
extinct, this book didn't have an impact me. But when I previously learned about animals extinction, I was impacted because it let me know what
happened to dead species species. Examples of this could include learning about the dinosaurs when I was younger or learning about climate change
and hunting when I was in middle school. There weren't really any emotions that were evoked during or after the reading. Since this book was a

But, this book has 13 chapters each explaining evidence of extinction, theories, or animals that had been extinct. Animals that were talked about
included the Great Auks and Mammoths. Reasons for the extinctions were the obvious ones such as hunting and global warming. In a summary,
Kolbert explains the extinctions of a variety of different major animal species that became extinct. She also explains that if trends in the environment
continue that the biggest extinction in history will occur soon. If global warming, deforestation, and glaciers continue to melt she says that more and
more species will continue to become extinct. She explains how humans need to be more conservative and careful with what they're doing to prevent
extinction. Overall, I did not enjoy reading this book. Since I knew about most of the information being stated in the book, such as Darwin's theory
and global climate change, it was kind of like listening to a lecture of something that you already know a lot about. Also, the fact that this book was
straight facts and knowledge didn't lead me to liking it either. It was just throwing so much knowledge at you that it had you wondered what you had
just read after reading just one page. Because of this, the book got confusing and especially boring. Also the book had no structure and was put into
chapters that made the reading more confusing. So in conclusion, I would not recommend this

Eighteenth Century Americans were mainly interested in reading books about practical arts, religious and the politics as well. American does have a
long tradition on reading habits since long back. Thus they are proved to be improved in vocal, public expressions both towards and against throughout
reading skills. Novels are the entertaining seldom read by Americans in the 18th century. The nation's first novel was published in the late 18th

contributed to the success of Novels, Such writers were Susuana Rowson for her novel "Charlotte: A tale of truth". This navel was re–issued under the
title of Charlotte Temple, which sold more than million and half copies. The growth of novel reading grew rapidly towards the end of the year
1750.The main reason for the growth of novel readers was the rapid growth of the source of book materials such as book seller, public library and
lending library. An average person was able to obtain their reading materials from booksellers, public libraries as well through lending libraries
which were a cheaper option since they were able to rent the books for a small fee. Due to the vast number of readers between the year 1773 and

Should Books Be Taught In Schools
Throughout the course of education, certain books are an informative resource to develop and learn new knowledge in progressing the brain ability to
understand fundamental issue. The United States educational school boards and professors have the responsibility for protecting their student's mind
and cover the appropriate material for their students' decision. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of no dignity from challenging
certain books in the school library or public library? The repetition of censoring books in school has been widespread due to the explicit content of
inappropriateness. Oftentimes books are challenged without literally understand the content by judging the author's covers. When a book consists of
offensive or sexual material, then parents would challenge the schools to prevent their children from reading them. Certain kinds of books are being
challenged, challenge or banned books infringed upon the student's freedom to read what they want in school which leads to ignorance on controversial
topics.

Since the text was much more advanced, it had storylines that younger children could not understand. The book talked about controversial issues such as

Analysis of the Gothic Fiction Books, The Cask of...
Analysis of "The cask of Amontillado" and "A Rose for Emily" In this paper, I choose the Gothic fictions "The Cask of Amontillado" and "A Rose
for Emily" to compare. I like them as these two works are very exciting with suspense. Next I will compare them on three aspects. The first is the
theme. "A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner, is a short story about the life and death of Miss Emily Grierson. The reader is told the story
in flashback. Its structure is broken down into five individual sections, which make up a masterpiece. It presents the change of Southern society after
the American Civil War. This novel has its own special features in the characterization and description of the themes. "Compassion and Forgiveness"
is a major theme that we can find in the story, it might not be apparent at first. We almost have to be told that these sentiments are behind "A Rose for
Emily" before we can see them. The story is also about love, maybe it's not romantic and passionate, but it always inadvertently revealed a trace of
love in some details. Emily's father thought isolating her from the outside world is the best protection for Emily, so he protected her with arrogant
mentality. Emily might have thought of resistance, but month after month and year after year, it had become a habit for her to stay in his father's
tower. When her father died, the tower she depended on came down. She might have open her heart and no longer live lonely day and day, but

The Importance Of Banning Books
Should Schools Be Able To Ban Books? "Now somewhere in America, there is a child holding a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" and there is a child
holding a gun But only one of these things have been banned by their state government And it's not the one that can rip through flesh It's the one that
says "f you" on more pages than one Because we must control what the people say, and how they think and if they want to become the overseer of
their own selves, then we'll show them a real one. And somewhere in America, there's a child sitting at his mother's computer, reading the homepage
of the KKK's website, and that's open to the public but that child will never have read "To Kill a Mockingbird" because the school has banned it for it's

It's Me Margaret, based on the unsuitability for the targeted age group begs the question: When is the best time to challenge young adult issues such as

topics that educate them and help them gain understanding of something they care about. Leigh also added, " If your child's first encounter with a
swear word is in an eleventh–grade reading assignment, or if their exposure to violence by the age of, say, ten is limited solely to The Hunger
Games, I hereby accuse you of invoking supernatural parenting powers." In making this comment Leigh's point is that in a world filled with media
there is little to chance your child doesn't know what violence is or the basis of a controversial topic such as drug use. Maybe your child doesn't know
much about these topics but knowledge is our greatest weapon and without it your child could stumble into a bad situation with no defenses. Leigh
finally stated in her conclusion, "The Feminine Mystique was the spark that ignited second–wave feminism, and The Jungle prompted the passage of
the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The founding of evolutionary biology in Darwin's On the Origin of Species continues to impact scientific theory
across the globe, and the African–American Civil Rights Movement can find roots in Native Son." The essence of Jamie

The Book ' Drive Is A Non Fiction Book By Daniel Pink
Drive is a 2009 non–fiction book by Daniel Pink. Pink, a law student and former speech writer for Vice President Al Gore, explores widely accepted
social science research, but he also claims it is widely ignored. Throughout the book, Pink compares the evolution of people's motivation over time to
the evolution of computer operating systems. He asserts that people have progressed from Motivation 2.0 (carrots and sticks) to a new operating
system, Motivation 3.0, of whose main elements are autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Pink also explores the dangers not upgrading from Motivation
2.0 as well as some how–to's on developing, honing, and harnessing Motivation 3.0.
Pink provides a well laid out case highlighting the gap between what science knows and what organizations do. Showcasing the mid–century work of
Harry Harlow and Edward Deci , Pink explains how human motivation seems to run counter to what most scientists and citizens believe. For
decades, we have believed that we know what motivates people: rewards. Rewards are supposed to intensify interest and enhance performance. But
Harlow and Deci found different results. Deci wrote, "When money is used as an external reward for some activity, the subjects lose intrinsic interest
for the activity." Like a shot of espresso, rewards can give you a jolt of energy, but the boost wears out, moreover, it can erode a person's longer–term
motivation to engage in the task. As we continue to incentivize our staff and students,

Chris Krakauer 's Non Fiction Book Into The Wild
Imagine this: a young adult vanishes without a trace to venture off into the wild and "discover" himself. With the bearings of a modern–day
bildungsroman, such a story may not seem uncommon; after all, young adult novels and films have both glorified and censured the youthful adventure
tale, perpetuating an image of adolescents (particularly young males) as courageous yet foolhardy individuals who adamantly desire self–discovery.
Such depictions may not be far from reality, as demonstrated by the story of Chris McCandless in Jon Krakauer's non–fiction book Into the Wild.
Krakauer presents a relatively objective account of 24–year–old McCandless's brief sojourn in the Alaskan wilderness and the events leading to his
death, offering opinions from individuals who criticized the young man's arrogance and foolhardiness as well as those who extolled McCandless as a
noble, brave hero. To establish an extreme and unyielding stance on Chris McCandless – viewing him as either a righteous idealist or an inexperienced
dunderhead – would disregard McCandless's nuanced personality and his sensitive familial circumstances. When one takes into account McCandless's
estrangement from his family and his worship of author Jack London's The Call of the Wild, it becomes clear that while McCandless was an ignorant
and overconfident hypocrite who was unable to survive in the wild, he genuinely adhered to his beliefs and was not wholly responsible for his own
death. McCandless's unusual family

Marketing James Patterson Books
Executive Summary:
Over the last decade James Patterson has published an unprecedented number of best–selling books, cemented a powerful brand image amongst a loyal
following, and redefined the process by which authors create content to meet reader demand. From November 2000 through June 2003, Patterson had
cumulative sales of over six million dollars, trailing only John Grisham during that time frame. He has generated the majority of his sales through a
loyal readership that consistently lines up to buy his next installment. Keenly aware of this dedicated following, Patterson successfully sought to

With an exclusive pre–release to a carefully pre–determined list of customers, Patterson would instead be proactively creating a buzz, and potentially, a
blockbuster.
In terms of channel management, this pre–release should satisfy all members of the channel. Certainly, the book clubs would embrace the idea of being
able to market an exclusive release of a Patterson novel, and with exclusive rights, should be able to retain club members for longer commitments.
More importantly, this would not have to come at the expense of the retail chains because club members generally would buy books through the club
channel anyways. The retail stores, instead, could benefit from the buzz created by club members, as non–club members may now be clamoring to buy
the book their friends have already been talking about as soon as it is released in stores. A true blockbuster would increase the size of the "pie" for all
channel members.

Is The Book 'The Giver' By Louis Lowry: Science Fiction Or...
The Giver by Louis Lowry is an exceptional book that is indeed science fiction, which fits in the genre of modern fantasy. According to Tunnell and
Jacobs, "Science fiction differs from fantasy not in subject matter but in aim, and its unique aim is to suggest real hypotheses about mankind's future or
about the nature of the universe...Science fiction also concerns the way in which scientific possibilities might affect societies of human or alien beings
or both. Therefore, it is sometime called futuristic fiction" (2016, p.129). The Giver fits in this futuristic fiction category, because there is a dystopia
society that is very different from the society that we live in today. The society that Jonas the main character in the story lives in has many rules that
are not used in our society. Such that the government chooses the types of job you will have at the age of twelve, no one in your community has the

You Say You Want A Resolution Analysis
A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. In Heidi Pollock's essay, "You Say You Want a Resolution" she describes the true
meaning of a New Year's resolution. A lot of people might pick only one resolution for New Year's. They might say they want to lose a certain amount
of weight or to stop drinking soda. According to Pollock though, that is not the correct way. In Pollock's words , "A trueresolution should be an
addition to your life, should expand your horizons and help you grow as a person". Her view is that people should have three resolutions; one from
the Health & Lifestyle category, another from the Education/Practice category, as well as one from the Project/Task category. The reason for the three
is to increase the odds in being successful in fulfilling at least one of the resolutions. So my three New Year's resolutions for next year arewashing my
face every night before bed, reading a book I would not normally read at least once a month, and finally finding a job for myself. My first resolution
will definitely be hard to achieve, especially every night. The reason for this is because I like to stay up late till I become so tired that I end up going to
sleep before washing my face first. Another reason is that I usually come home late and by that time I am so exhausted that I once again go straight
to bed before washing my face that is full of makeup. A way I can break this habit of going to sleep before washing my face, is for me to

  • 3. Non-Fiction Book: Hiroshima By John Hersey Rohan Bhatia August 9, 2015 Lehman Summer Reading Non–Fiction Book: Hiroshima by John Hersey Journal Entry #1: From whose point of view is the story told? What other voices could tell the story? Be sure to explain how the story would be different from this other, new perspective. Hiroshima by John Hersey is told from a narrator's point of view. Although many books are told this way, I feel that if the story was told from the victim's point of the view it would make the book more meaningful. For example the narrator says "... and for a time the child had breathed normally and seemed alright; then suddenly it had died" (Hersey 58). If the point of view of this sentence came from the mother who lost her child it would make the seen much more dramatic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Green structured this book by splitting it into two sections, before and after. For instance in the before section of the book Pudge says, "So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." This quote shows how the whole before section of the book was created to establish all the relationships with the main character, especially with Alaska. In the after part of the section Pudge says "So I know she forgives me, just as I forgive her. Thomas Edison's last words were "It's beautiful over there." "I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere and I hope its beautiful." This quote shows how the main character realized his feelings and fell in love with Alaska in the after part of the book. Overall the way John Green structured the book really made me feel like I was a part of Pudge's life. Because the book it realistic I felt the happiness and sorrows of all the characters ... • 4. Why We Should Banning Books Be Banned Banning books has been happening for a very long time within the education system. Parents and other adults are demanding that specific books stay out of the grasp of their innocent children, even high school students. This paper will be covering three reasons why certain books shouldn't be banned just because parents don't agree with the material inside the pages. The main points I will cover are, first: knowledge shouldn't be kept from one age group just because some people don't agree with the subject matter. Second: Many challenged books could help people get a abetter idea of the world they live in and their place in it. Last: books are a portal to different life experiences and reading encourages empathy and social–emotional development. Expanding on that first point is the fact that parents may control what their own children read, but don't have a right to restrict what books are available to other people. You may ask others not to judge you for how you raise your kids, but that goes the same for books in school libraries. Parents who don't like specific books can have their kids "opt out" of an assignment without infringing on the rights of others.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robie H. Harris, author of frequently challenged children's books including It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing up, Sex, and Sexual Health, stated, "I think these books look at the topics, the concerns, the worry, the fascination that kids have today... It's the world in which they're living." Many books that have long been considered to be required reading to become educated about literature and American history are frequently challenged, such as: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Ender's Game Analysis It's Raining Books I embraced what it means to be a real reader at a young age. I didn't merely read books, I LIVED books. My second grade teacher insisted her students write about their favorite books and why we chose that specific book. Easy peasy lemon squeezy Mrs. Laforte! Gazing down at the paper on my beloved cubby desk, the choice was clear: Dinosaurs Days by Joyce Milton. "I love this book because I love dinosaurs. I even have dinosaur toys!" (From an adorable little boy a.k.a. Bradley). It was around this time when I delved into solely fiction novels such as Narnia, which undoubtingly influenced how I viewed the world and its inhabitants. Nearly everyone daydreams when there is a certain lack of stimulation, but I'd bet I spent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fortunately, there is always that flowing river of books from which I can fish out fresh stories. Over the past year, I've been unable to shake visions of the giant sandworms (from Frank Herbert's Dune) erupting from the open desert, causing ripples that would cause the Tyrannosaurus Rex to shake in its metaphorical boots. Oh how I yearned to embark on a journey of self–discovery like Bink in A Spell For Chameleon, encountering familiar yet foreign mythological beasts originating from various legends (not excluding the bare–chested creatures of course). Holden Caulfield whispers "phony" in my ear to this day whenever I'm presented with deceit. Books will wiggle their way into your mind, for they wield the power to change ... • 6. Library Donation Books This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are given to the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages. Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion's online library page using the term "handling gift or donated books". I selected Kay Ann Cassell's article "Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US." Cassell's article provides an overview of guidelines to be used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library's Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to follow a policy that explains the purpose of the library's collection, what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials are ... Elementary school teachers regularly admonished me for hiding a novel behind a textbook, or in my lap, and sneaking glances whenever possible. When school dismissed, my nose would be buried inside a book, and I read anything I could get my hands on: my brother's books, my mom's Women's Day magazines, and even the backs of cereal boxes. Snuggled up in blankets, I grabbed the latest Magic Treehouse and plunged into magical worlds for countless hours. Not because it doesn't give anything beneficiary, but because not everyone had the urged to at least finish a book. We now live in a world where social medias almost dominates our daily activities. It's unlikely to have a place for us to consume a non–fiction or fiction book. As absurd as it sounds but that's how people often think. We now live in an egalitarian society, where everyone is given the freedom and right of its own. • 10. Catcher In The Rye Should Not Be Banned Essay Controversial books are normally challenged to preserve a safe idea of the world around us to kids and young adults specifically, who may find it hard to process strenuous ideas that imply the world is not as easy and wonderful as it seems. Books such as The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger are constantly challenged due to the profanity and inappropriateness of the book. Many parents and teachers are concerned that upon reading the book, students will change their perspective on life, authority, and non–conformity for the worst. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned because it's very relevant to teens this day and age and it has a strong impact with a powerful theme and delivered in a manner that teens are familiar with and can understand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Catcher in the Rye is realistic in the sense that it does not deprive the reader of the protagonist's true thoughts and it does not shield the reader from the depressing and negative state the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, is in most of the time. This book digs deep beneath the surface of a teen that is struggling just like many teens in real life do as well. Holden does not know what he wants to do and he is trying to find a purpose in life for him since he feels alone, depressed, angry, and resentful all the time. The article (Cart): "A Literature of Risk: Teens Dealing with Violence and Other Risky Behaviors Can Get Help From Young Adult Fiction" states that "Risky behaviors remain very real factors in the daily lives of 21st –century teens." Which is why reading a book such as The Catcher in the Rye is beneficial because it has to do with what goes on in the teen society today. Teens are involved in drugs, alcohol, and violence like the article states and even though The Catcher in the Rye is fiction, it is not too far off on depicting what a teen goes through, therefore making the story ... David and Goliath – Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants is an informative and thought–provoking non–fiction book written by Malcolm Gladwell. This 305–page book begins with the Biblical story of David and Goliath, followed by an explanation of how society views this classic battle the wrong way, which prepares readers for its message. This introductory story is followed by nine chapters, each one telling a symbolic story of modern battles between "David and Goliath", in order to persuade... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a broad sense, the audience of David and Goliath is any person who enjoys reading and is knowledgeable about popular books. However, this group is quite different than Gladwell's intended audience. Every chapter addresses a different group of people, and since they are directly mentioned, these groups have the most to gain from this book. The groups are given specific examples of people with similar lives and issues as them, and Gladwell proposes ideas that would benefit them. Specifically, these groups are immigrants, minorities, college students, parents, people with disabilities, war victims, civil rights advocates, and victims of traumatic experiences. Malcolm Gladwell tries to change people's opinion of underdogs, and he tries to help groups in difficult situations. Malcolm Gladwell uses the Biblical story of David and Goliath and other modern–day versions to demonstrate his three main points; that there are disadvantages to advantages, advantages to disadvantages, and that there are some desirable disabilities. Gladwell states that what he "was trying to do with his book was get people to take a step back from easy assumptions about what makes the most sense." • 14. Analyzing Fiction Book 'The Brave' Fiction books have helped me know why people are so worried about bullying. I have read a book called The Brave when I was in eleventh grade for a free read that showed me how common and serous bullying can be. It has also showed me that our generation needs to learn to have respect for each other in and outside of school so bullying will start to go away. In books that I have read in school in the past that dealt with bullying were far worse than what people consider bullying today. In most cases the bullying is on a very serious level in books now a days and could cause the victim a lot of physical, mental, and emotional harm from what the characters say and do. In "Lois Lowry's The Giver," Avi, Edward Irving Wortis, explains that " The Giver" depicts social criticism through its portrayal of murder and euthanasia. He criticizes "The Giver" to be "a work of contemporary social criticism presented as a work of fiction," as it is a fantasy and a "cautionary tale." Are we to be entertained by murder which is immoral and sinful?" Wortis questions the originality of the author of the letter given his or her confusion of the plot, failure to recognize Jonas's horror to the possibility of the baby's murder, and Jonas's motivation to save Gabriel. Wortis criticizes the writer of the letter by reasoning the attack on "The Giver" to be that "those who feel threatened by it are precisely the kind of people who would create the society portrayed in the book." He attacks those who try to control their children who can "discover the hypocrisy of adult culture," as is shown to Jonas. The story describes the sexual situation until the two characters fall asleep, in addition to this the profanity in the story can be found on almost every other page throughout the entire story. "A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner, is a short story about the life and death of Miss Emily Grierson. The reader is told the story in flashback. Its structure is broken down into five individual sections, which make up a masterpiece. It presents the change of Southern society after the American Civil War. This novel has its own special features in the characterization and description of the themes. "Compassion and Forgiveness" is a major theme that we can find in the story, it might not be apparent at first. We almost have to be told that these sentiments are behind "A Rose for Emily" before we can see them. The story is also about love, maybe it's not romantic and passionate, but it always inadvertently revealed a trace of love in some details. Emily's father thought isolating her from the outside world is the best protection for Emily, so he protected her with arrogant mentality. Pink also explores the dangers not upgrading from Motivation 2.0 as well as some how–to's on developing, honing, and harnessing Motivation 3.0. Pink provides a well laid out case highlighting the gap between what science knows and what organizations do. Showcasing the mid–century work of Harry Harlow and Edward Deci , Pink explains how human motivation seems to run counter to what most scientists and citizens believe. For decades, we have believed that we know what motivates people: rewards. Rewards are supposed to intensify interest and enhance performance. But Harlow and Deci found different results. Deci wrote, "When money is used as an external reward for some activity, the subjects lose intrinsic interest for the activity." Like a shot of espresso, rewards can give you a jolt of energy, but the boost wears out, moreover, it can erode a person's longer–term motivation to engage in the task. • 36. Chris Krakauer 's Non Fiction Book Into The Wild Imagine this: a young adult vanishes without a trace to venture off into the wild and "discover" himself. With the bearings of a modern–day bildungsroman, such a story may not seem uncommon; after all, young adult novels and films have both glorified and censured the youthful adventure tale, perpetuating an image of adolescents (particularly young males) as courageous yet foolhardy individuals who adamantly desire self–discovery. Such depictions may not be far from reality, as demonstrated by the story of Chris McCandless in Jon Krakauer's non–fiction book Into the Wild. Krakauer presents a relatively objective account of 24–year–old McCandless's brief sojourn in the Alaskan wilderness and the events leading to his death, offering opinions from individuals who criticized the young man's arrogance and foolhardiness as well as those who extolled McCandless as a noble, brave hero. To establish an extreme and unyielding stance on Chris McCandless – viewing him as either a righteous idealist or an inexperienced dunderhead – would disregard McCandless's nuanced personality and his sensitive familial circumstances. When one takes into account McCandless's estrangement from his family and his worship of author Jack London's The Call of the Wild, it becomes clear that while McCandless was an ignorant and overconfident hypocrite who was unable to survive in the wild, he genuinely adhered to his beliefs and was not wholly responsible for his own death. • 37. Marketing James Patterson Books Executive Summary: Over the last decade James Patterson has published an unprecedented number of best–selling books, cemented a powerful brand image amongst a loyal following, and redefined the process by which authors create content to meet reader demand. From November 2000 through June 2003, Patterson had cumulative sales of over six million dollars, trailing only John Grisham during that time frame. He has generated the majority of his sales through a loyal readership that consistently lines up to buy his next installment. Keenly aware of this dedicated following, Patterson successfully sought to augment the proliferation of his titles with co–authors familiar with his brand that could share the workload, creating a virtual ... With an exclusive pre–release to a carefully pre–determined list of customers, Patterson would instead be proactively creating a buzz, and potentially, a blockbuster. In terms of channel management, this pre–release should satisfy all members of the channel. Certainly, the book clubs would embrace the idea of being able to market an exclusive release of a Patterson novel, and with exclusive rights, should be able to retain club members for longer commitments. More importantly, this would not have to come at the expense of the retail chains because club members generally would buy books through the club channel anyways. The retail stores, instead, could benefit from the buzz created by club members, as non–club members may now be clamoring to buy the book their friends have already been talking about as soon as it is released in stores. A true blockbuster would increase the size of the "pie" for all channel members. Shoes Are Untied If I lived in Jonas' community I would have a hard time leaving behind some of my favorite books, because inside the community you are only allowed three books a dictionary, rule book, and a book full of all the jobs in the community. My favorite books are How To Outrun A Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied, Ice Dogs, and Lara's Gift. I enjoy thebook How To Outrun A Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied written by Jess Keating, this is an interesting book with the genre of realistic fiction. I enjoy this book because of the relatability; this is about a girl who is struggling to get through middle school. Because of her odd family and her now not–so best friend she is being bullied, and moving into to a zoo isn't helping her situation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Is The Book 'The Giver' By Louis Lowry: Science Fiction Or... The Giver by Louis Lowry is an exceptional book that is indeed science fiction, which fits in the genre of modern fantasy. According to Tunnell and Jacobs, "Science fiction differs from fantasy not in subject matter but in aim, and its unique aim is to suggest real hypotheses about mankind's future or about the nature of the universe...Science fiction also concerns the way in which scientific possibilities might affect societies of human or alien beings or both. Therefore, it is sometime called futuristic fiction" (2016, p.129). The Giver fits in this futuristic fiction category, because there is a dystopia society that is very different from the society that we live in today. The society that Jonas the main character in the story lives in has many rules that are not used in our society. Such that the government chooses the types of job you will have at the age of twelve, no one in your community has the same name; color and music are not visual or known in this society. • 42. You Say You Want A Resolution Analysis A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. In Heidi Pollock's essay, "You Say You Want a Resolution" she describes the true meaning of a New Year's resolution. A lot of people might pick only one resolution for New Year's. They might say they want to lose a certain amount of weight or to stop drinking soda. According to Pollock though, that is not the correct way. In Pollock's words , "A trueresolution should be an addition to your life, should expand your horizons and help you grow as a person". Her view is that people should have three resolutions; one from the Health & Lifestyle category, another from the Education/Practice category, as well as one from the Project/Task category. The reason for the three is to increase the odds in being successful in fulfilling at least one of the resolutions. So my three New Year's resolutions for next year arewashing my face every night before bed, reading a book I would not normally read at least once a month, and finally finding a job for myself. My first resolution will definitely be hard to achieve, especially every night. The reason for this is because I like to stay up late till I become so tired that I end up going to sleep before washing my face first. Another reason is that I usually come home late and by that time I am so exhausted that I once again go straight to bed before washing my face that is full of makeup. A way I can break this habit of going to sleep before washing my face, is for me to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
