Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre
In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded,
killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people's homes searching for
Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the "Rape of
Nanking", or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always
taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be
remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for
political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help the
government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own views
on their history.
The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built
tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations.
The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre lasted
for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The title "Rape
of Nanking" is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 . Some
of the Chinese captives, some of which were Chinese soldiers, were forced to dig graves for groups
of other captives to be buried alive in, and then would be buried themselves when the next group of
captives dug a new grave .

How Does Matsuo Basho's Journey Affect Literature
Matsuo Basho's journey has a significant impact on literature due to his well–written journals that
reveal his lifestyle and experiences. In his first journal, The Records of a Weather–exposed
Skeleton, Basho conveys his spiritual thoughts and religious life that he experiences on a new
journey. Basho's journal contains several poems as he further reveals different people, traditions,
and significant places that made his journey more memorable. In Matsuo Basho's first journal he
reveals the several reasons on why he is travelling. Basho departs from his home into the North in
order to experience the culture aspects and nature of Japan. Throughout, the first journal, we see
Basho's search for enlightenment in his pilgrimage. We see the different locations that Basho has
gone to in order to learn more and to be part of the traditions. As stated by Basho, "...I left my
broken house on the River Sumida in the August of the first year of Jyokyo among the wails of the
autumn wind" (Basho 51). This quote explains that Basho leaves his home on a long pilgrimage in
order to discover more about religion and develop a better understanding about Japanese culture as
he is motivated to gain enlightenment. As he travels we readers realize how Basho becomes aware

As a poet Basho's phenomenal word choice and description allowed us readers to view his journey
as if we are there with him. It is amazing to see that Basho is such a religious person who has visited
various shrines, temples, and met many new and old friends and created new haiku's. In addition,
this reading was interesting to me because it shows Basho's motivation to become more enlightened
and his choice to live according to Buddha's life as expressed through his poems. Reading this
journal was one of the best pieces of literature that I have read because of what I got to learn as a

Iris Chang's The Rape Of Nanking And The Forgotten Holocaust
Nanking, now modern day Nanjing, was once the former capital of China, boasting a flourishing
economy. However, the tranquility of the populous city would soon collapse. In 1937, the Japanese
army attacked the capital, and for weeks bloodshed and rape ensued. In the midst of war, the city
became dilapidated and riddled with destruction. The aftermath resulted in a debatable death toll,
ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers. Despite the
atrocities and chaos that happened, there are little media representations on the Nanking massacre.
Mass media can tell the story of an event that official documents cannot share. The Holocaust, for
example, is internationally known to be a horrific, tragic event ... Show more content on

As a result, only the bombing of Nagasaki an Hiroshima became highlighted in history and
engrained into the memory of the public, while the Nanking massacre, which Chang describes as the
Forgotten Holocaust in the subtitle of her book, became lost in history. Japanese people who sought
justice for Nanking were silenced by death threats, burying the event more. On the other hand,
Germany, regarding the Holocaust, put the blame on not only the army, but also their own
government. The German government focused on their government's indirect participation in the
atrocities that ensued in the Holocaust– taking full responsibility for what happened. In the media,
there were respectable figures who spoke out against the existence of the massacre. Chang gives
many examples of political figures who spread the idea that the Nanking massacre was a falsified
event. In 1988, minister of education and prefectural Kempeitai director, told reporters at the
notorious Yasukuni shrine, where the lives of the cruellest war criminals are celebrated, that "there
was no intention of aggression" in China. Instead, he claimed that the "white race made Asia into a
colony, but only Japan is blamed". Later, after facing heated backlash in Asia, he changed his
argument, explaining he "didn't say Japan

Autry Museums
In Autry article, she stated that "how national histories marred by racial conflict can be translated
into narratives of group identity formation" (Autry, 57). Autry is trying to say that museums is a
sacred place of memory and trauma. When traveling through these museums the author notice that
the most common themes were "capture and displacement from Africa, enslavement, and racial
segregation" (Autry 64). When she notices that these were the three main topics being shown to the
public then it's a major problem. She felt that the museums had too much power because they were
choosing certain information to be displayed about the struggles of African Americans. The author
wants to show that over time that a museum can change and can interpret things in a new way in

Therefore, the museum can thrive. She explains that "identities are performed ideologies
interrogated and cultural symbols reinvented" (Autry 60). The author is trying to say that certain
items are displayed in a museum for a reason by trying to send a certain message. When she talks
about how cultural symbols are reinvented it shows that museums is trying to change the people's
perspectives by creating a new meaning for a certain symbol. Another problem that the author has
noticed is that some parts of the African American culture are disappearing because for example
there was a "city's decision to invest in a new commercial enterprise, rather than supporting smaller,
more locally–oriented museums." (Autry 75). The government does not support the local museums
than it causes issues because some of the history is lost. The memory is lost from the local regional
area, which could have added a new perspective towards a certain standpoint. While the new
museums don't necessarily tell the entire story and focuses on a specific issue that is selected by a

Compare and Contrast Kami and Shen, the Japanese and...
Compare and Contrast Kami and Shen, the Japanese and Chinese Words for God
The words kami in Japanese and shen in Chinese both are translated into English as the word god.
Although they both refer to somewhat similar supernatural elements, they are by no means identical
to each other. Chinese shen is an abstract term referring to spirits and relating to abstract thoughts
such as the heavens and the afterlife. In contrast, kami are very often related directly to a person or
actual object and are worshiped in a hope for more day–to–day help or this worldly benefits. In
order to help explain the relationship between kami and shen, I will first explore the similarities
between the two terms, then discuss the unique characteristics which ... Show more content on

All three of these concepts, especially the first and the third, are very abstract concepts. Because
they are difficult to understand through natural reasoning, they are seen as mystical.
The first category of shen, human spirits, can also include the human soul. These are spoken of in
Chinese literature such as "The Scripture of the Yellow Court" which documents specific deities
(shen) living within the human body. "The spirits of the liver, lungs, and spleen are above,
representing Heaven, as contrasted with the navel... representing the underworld of matter and
generation" (Kroll 362–3). This document goes on to cite the roles that many of the shen living
inside of you perform. "And the sacred estrade of the heart will prove an everlastingly impregnable
structure" (365). Of the spirits inside of you, the most important are those of the heart. The "Simple
Questions of the Yellow Emperor" also describes the heart as the most important: "The heart
functions as the prince and governs through the shen; the lungs are liaison officers who promulgate
rules and regulations; the liver is a general and devises strategies (qtd. in Schipper 100). This
passage again designates the heart as the ruler of the body and assigns specific roles to the

Visit Of The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir On Prescott Avenue
When it comes to the topic of understanding religions other than one's own, most are educated by
what they have learned through their reading, or have been taught by professors, colleagues, friends
and neighbors. Few have the curiosity, courage, and in my case a course requirement to attend a
service of another religion and dialogue with those practicing that particular religion. I chose to visit
the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir on Prescott Avenue mainly because of my curiosity regarding the
diversity of the practice of Hindusim. I attended two services, one being the celebration of Diwali,
the festival of lights, and the other being an ordinary Sunday ritual. These experiences have given

We began to take a seat as close to the rear as possible, when Mary Katherine pointed out that we
were clearly on the women's side of the temple. The other two male students and I realizing our lack
observational skill turned around and exited back through the shoe room, and into the lobby. There I
thought it would be best to stop in and inform the young man in the office (whose name has slipped
my memory) that we were visiting as part of our course. He welcomed us and explained that today
was their celebration of Dewali and that they were expecting close to 500 people. He came out of
the office and brought us down the center isle up to the shrine. I couldn't hear much of what he was
saying, partly due his accent, but also due to the loud music that was being played by a few
worshipers just a few feet away. The shrine was composed of three figures covered in brightly
colored decorative ornaments and clothing. The figures stood in a large altar that appeared to be
beautifully carved and finished wood that was lined with strips of lights that flickered colored
patterns throughout the service. Below the altar was an assortment of foods and fruits, which were
aesthetically prepared and plated. I took a few pictures as were many worshipers, the young man
then said he had to head to the back of the temple to grab something and my fellow students and I

The sociocultural role of sport in the country, including any political implications
South Korea loves sport, sport is not only a popular physical activity but is a significant social
practice. Sport operates as an important cultural resource and produces and disseminates
nationalism. Indeed, in recent years, south korea has shown competence in hosting, playing, and
managing sport. South Korean athletes have created notable results at major international sport
events. For example, since 1984, the national Summer Olympic team has unfailingly been ranked in
the top 10 nations on the medal table, with the only exception being the 2000 Sydney Olympic
Games. The country has also produced a number of major world sporting events, including hosting

This has had profound implications in the development of Korean society. Soon after the liberation
from Japan in 1945, the peninsula was sectioned into two parts and 5 years later, civil war broke out
in 1950. This war ended in 1953 without a peace treaty, which means the two countries still
technically are at war. More than 50 years of division has influenced the culture and national
opinions of the Korean people. The two Koreas see each other as political and military enemies, but
they also see themselves as an ethnically homogenous nation. So there is a strong desire on both
sides of the fence to reunify so that a unified Korean nation state can be created. The reunification of
the nation is one of the largest political projects in both South and North Korea. This ethnic
nationalism allows for occasional cooperation between the two countries such as North Korea and
South Korea marching together for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics and 2006
Turin Olympics. Sport in Korea has reflected these complicated relations. International competitions
created a symbolic battlefield between the two countries, at least until the 1980s. North and South
Korean governments invested heavily in developing skilled athletes and funded part of the
development of high performance sport in order to win more medals in international games. This

Shinto Research Paper
A Shinto shrine is a structure whose main purpose is to house one or more Shinto kami (spirit). A
shrine's most important building is used for the safekeeping of sacred objects rather than for
worship.
Although "shrine" is the only word used in English, Shinto shrines have a variety of many different
names used in Japanese. In particular, gongen, –gū, jinja, jingū, mori, myōjin, –sha, taisha, and
ubusuna oryashiro are the nonequivalent names for Shinto shrine.
A Shinto shrine is usually characterized by the presence of a honden, the most sacred building at a

It enshrines a kami called Ōkuninushi, translating to "Great Land Master". It is believed that he
shaped Japan before it was populated by Amaterasu's offspring, the Emperor's ancestors.
Due to its physical remoteness, Izumo has been eclipsed in fame by other sites. Although, there is
still a widespread belief that all Japanese gods meet there in October. For this reason, it is also
known as Month Without Gods (Kannazuki), while at Izumo Taisha alone it is referred as Month
With Gods (Kamiarizuki). The head shrine of the largest shrine network in Japan is Fushimi Inari
Taisha, which has more than 32 000 members (about a third of the total). Inari Okami worship
started in the 8th century and has continued ever since, expanding to the rest of the country. Located
in Fushimi–ku, Kyoto, the shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari. It also includes
trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines.
Together with Munakata Taisha, Itsukushima Shrine is at the head of the Munakata shrine network.

Japan: A Modern Day Nation Essays
Japan is an excellent example of a modern nation. "By identifying the modern as a cluster of related
principles rather than as merely a period, we are able to trace its occurrence in different periods in
different national or cultural settings" (Goto–Jones, 7). The idea of what is culture and what is
modern can be subjective. Time and setting are merely measurements showcasing a particular in
relation to everything else. Although Goto–Jones is critical of what it means to be "modern,"
reasons supporting his opinion on whether Japan is modern or not can be given by looking at some
of the changes Japan has made; observations of the dynamic and stagnant in Japan's past and
present. By comparing and contrasting through history the government, ... Show more content on

Within the short time frame, a significant transformation in political, industrial, and societal means
took hold, seeing Japan as a great power within the world. Emperor Meiji's death in 1912 saw in end
of an era at its own representation (Goto–Jones, 70). More change came as the Japanese social
environment felt to be continually bewildered by the western powers. In response, this drove Japan
to imperialize and eventually join World War II. After losing the war, Japan was subjected for
significant change once again. With the 1947 Constitution it is the people who hold sovereignty, as
opposed to The Emperor who did so in the Meiji Constitution (Goto–Jones, 96). A contribution and
push to Japan's unique adoption of modernization after World War II can be attributed to pressings
such as Article 9, which prohibits Japan from being able to declare war, and from possessing
military power other than the minimum necessary to defend the nation. This, along with the Reverse
Course. This helped Japan move more towards a modern democracy by having its foreign policy
based around its relationship with the US, which set Japan as a beacon of US policy in Asia (Goto–
Jones, 97). Joint to Japan's progression with modernity through history is the new found knowledge
and technology that developed. When the Westerners arrived with their technology of the toy train,
this represented a display of more advanced technology from a greater source of power

Shintaro Ishihara is the most well known neo–con. "Being an independent ?having shunned the

More Than Mere Trifles
During the Middle Ages, the English church's suggestions were spoken by God's own voice. The
Church encouraged pilgrimages to various holy places, or shrines, to search for spiritual
enlightenment and penitence from sin. This ideology says that if one were to pray at a shrine, one
could be forgiven of one's sins, thus increasing the chance of going to Heaven after an earthly death.
Those suffering from a plethora of aliments and other illnesses might also make a pilgrimage in the
hope of being healed of it. For whatever their reason, pilgrims made their way to the various
shrines; they were influenced, in part, by furthering their faith through religious relics. Pilgrims
sought out relics and saw these pieces of material as much more than ... Show more content on

"His wallet lay before him on his lap, / Brimful of pardons come from Rome, all hot," says Chaucer
in The Canterbury Tales. "The Pardoner's Tale" goes on to say that he even demonstrates the

Pardoner prays on people's need for a belief in God, a heaven, atonement, forgiveness––a belief in
something, anything. The Pardoner feeds off others' insecurities and grows stronger in his
businesses practice through the mockery of religious pilgrimages. Because of the popularity of
pilgrimages, King Henry VIII made an inquiry about the nature of pilgrimages in 1535. Once Henry
read the dispositions made by his research team, the king made the decision to close over 300
monasteries across the land. Among the results of this decision was the selling of the land formerly
held by the monasteries to smaller farmers. This effect of King Henry VIII's choice made the
decision a popular one among his constituency. Shortly after Henry's curiosity about the pilgrimages
began, he focused particularly on religious shrines throughout England. Until that point, many
flocked to religious shrines for the reason of religious fulfillment. Pilgrims who were financially

As China's military continues to grow, its neighbors follow closely behind. Japan deserves a special
attention in this case. Recently, China adds more pressure by having military drills on the

Technically Japan does not have a military force or to be specific military force to attack. Japan
constitution under article 9 states that Japan is a pacifist country and any military the country have is
for self–defense purpose only. However, many countries like India, Philippines, Vietnam, and
Australia support Japan military modernization, which gave Japan more reason to do so (Leaf,

China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict
China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict
Enchantria Fleming
Excelsior College
For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino–
Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino–Japanese war
nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to
constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun
to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence.
The First Sino– Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the
weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea
was already one of China 's most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic
positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology,
Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China.
Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued
the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries
by signing of the Li– Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894,
Kim Ok–kyun, a pro–Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and
assassinated. His body was then placed aboard a Chinese warship and directed back to Korea, where

Dispute between Japan and China
A dispute over islands in the East China Sea has inflamed relations between Japan and China for the
last two years – but they were tense even before. So I think in order to have a better understanding
of why Sino–Japanese relation is that much tense all the time, we need to know the background that
is history of two countries. I will start from the second Sino–Japanese War because it was the largest
Asian War and the most devastating War for the Republic of China. The Nanking Massacre, also
known as the rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops
against Nanking during the Second Sino–Japanese War, which also happened during the World War
Two. The massacre started from December 13, 1937 and it lasted six weeks. During this period, tens
of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants were murdered by soldiers of the
Imperial Japanese Army. And widespread rape and looting also occurred. There is not an accurate
estimation of the death roll in the massacre, because most of Japanese military records on the
killings were destroyed or kept secret for some reasons. Chang who published her book The Rape of
Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, wrote of the death toll estimates given by
different sources; "Chinese military specialist Liu Fang–chu proposed a figure of 430,000, officials

Germany 's Defeat During World War II Essay
In the year 1945 as a consequence of Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II the country was
forcibly split between four powers the Soviets in the East and Allies of the West in a period known
as the division of Germany. The country was stripped of its many spoils of war and lost all of its
territories in the east. At the Potsdam Conference Prime Minister Clement Attlee of Britain, Premier
Stalin, and President Truman put forth the guiding ethos for the Allied Control Council: Germany's
complete and total disarmament and demilitarization, destruction of its war potential rigid control
over it's industries, and the decentralization of the political and economic structure. Finally, for
purposes of Political control Germany was divided into four national zones to be occupied by the
allied forces. The occupation of West Germany by the allies would last well into the Cold War,
whilst East Germany, would remain under Soviet influence until after the Cold War had ended. It
should also be noted that West Germany adopted a more capitalistic model while the East side of
Germany remained a Communist society till after the Cold War. It can be said that post World War II
until after the Cold War Germany also shares a similar history, and restrictions with its former
wartime ally Japan. The defeat of the two countries by the allied powers forced them into a period of
foreign military occupation, demilitarization, to be stripped of war potential, a period of successful

Research Paper On Kitsune
Kitsune are from Japanese folklore and are Japanese foxes. A kitsune can have up to nine tails,
depending on its age, wisdom and power. The only way to kill a kitsune is to cut off all of its tails,
as it is said that one of the tails is its main tail and the source of all its power. Not knowing which
tail is the main one, one would have to cut off all its tails to kill it.One, five, seven, and nine tails are
the most common numbers in folk stories. When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white
or gold.

types. For example, a ninko is an invisible fox spirit that human beings can only perceive when it

supernatural abilities the kitsune possesses.
Physically, kitsune are noted for having as many as nine tails. These kyūbi no kitsune (九尾の狐,
nine–tailed foxes) gain the abilities to see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world.
Other tales attribute them infinite wisdom (Omniscence).
There are thirteen different kinds of Kitsune, each with a corresponding element, listed as follows:
Heaven (or Celestial or Prime), Void (or Dark), Wind, Spirit, Fire, Earth, River, Ocean, Mountain,
Forest, Thunder, Time and Sound. One of the most important things to a Kitsune is freedom. They
do not fare well to being locked away, and do not like to be forced to do something they don't want
to. Doing something like that would be likely to get you killed if they are freed. Kitsune love
playing tricks. They like to take things and hide them from people, or do just about anything else to

Minoan Art Landscapes Are Not Necessarily Indicators Of...
Anne Chapin argues that Minoan art landscapes are not necessarily indicators of shrines, but do hold
a religious context. She continues on to say that they exist for the elite, that few common people
would have seen them, at that if they ever did it would signify to them the elite's power and
connection to the gods. She begins her argument by introducing past interpretations and the issues
that arise from them, then explains the possible significance of the floral motifs in landscapes, and
finishes with her interpretation of their meaning to the Minoan people. Evans begun the debate of
what the landscapes mean in Aegean art when he declared that the Monkeys and Blue Bird Fresco
was for a secular use of just existing for its aesthetic. Marinatos observed that the existence of
crocuses and lilies are normally used as decoration for alters and offering tables, and that monkeys
and doves are often in connection with goddesses, giving the fresco a much more religious
connotation than Evans had originally believed. She also pointed out the inclusion of flowers from
all different seasons and environments which led her to believe it was more than just wall
decoration, and was contextualizing a room that was shrine. Another fresco from Room 14 of the
Royal Villa, has all stirred discussion. Originally viewed as a bedroom due to remains of a bed
found, now may be seen as a shrine due to a low platform found and its walls are covered in a
landscape. The Spring Fresco found in Delta

Remembering Nanjing for historic justice and morality The recognition of history can neither be
Japan's strategic card nor diplomacy. Dec.13 marks the third Remembrance Ceremony for Nanjing,
known as Nanjing Ji. An estimated 300,000 Chinese massacred during a six–week period 79 years
ago by the imperial Japanese army are remembered. Over the past few years, the world is gaining a
deepening recognition of the Nanjing Massacre, following the establishment of the National
Memorial Day, the historical documents of the Nanjing Massacre listed on the UNESCO Memory
of the World Register UNESCO, and exhibitions held around the world. "The Second World War

But history should not be altered with the passing of time, and facts not erased by crafty denial.
Commemorating the Nanjing Massacre is not for hatred. It is consolation to the traumatized
survivors. The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe days earlier announced he will visit Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii to mourn the victims of the Japanese surprise attack 75 years ago. Abe was instantly
suggested by Japanese media that he should pay a visit to the the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall
in Nanjing. The above public opinion should be more accurately understood in the context of
Japan's deal over historical issues. Japan's right–wing forces have for decades kept making attempts
to deny the order established after the Second World War, such as visiting the notorious Yasukuni
Shrine and distorting history books. A few months ago, Japan revised a school text book which
distorted the history of Japanese atrocities in China and revised some references to the 1937 Nanjing
Massacre. It is hard to define Abe's visit to the Pearl Harbor as a "historical trip". Analysts say Japan
is extending a friendly hand to the United States, its former foe in war, in order to serve for its own

Stereotypes Against Racism
My dear friends and comrades on the Left, Let me start out by saying: thank you for saving my life.
And that's not hyperbole: it took me a while to find you, but when I did, you helped guide me in a
meaningful direction. Instead of drowning myself in booze or escaping into a world of drugs, I
found the antiwar movement and the world of progressive political activism. For that, I am
extremely thankful. When I was 18 years old, you might have found me on one of those YouTube
clips progressives post when they catch ignorant teenagers saying ignorant things on camera. You
know the sort of clips I'm referring to, I'm sure. Usually, someone with a camera confronts a couple
young people, asks them a series of questions and from there the laughs take care of themselves. At
that time, I didn't care about politics, or race, or culture or anything, really. I did care about sports
and working out. I cared about sex. And I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

would like my leftist friends, or at least those who identify as such, to rethink their position on
Bernie Sanders' U.S. Presidential campaign. To be clear, I don't work for his campaign, nor is

Yasukuni Shrine: Separation Of Church And State
In the modern world one of the most popular debate is that should there be a separation of church
and state. Majority of the people believe that the church and state should not be under the same
system. People argue that the leaders and its citizens are going to make irrational decisions that can
cause a lot of harm in the future. Yet there are a few countries in the modern world that have a
combination of the church and state in the nation. The countries argue that they want to preserve the
memory of their history and create a strong unity with its citizens. The nations believe that they are
upholding the values, culture and traditions. The Yasukuni Shrine is a prime example of how people

The Shrine is being openly expressed around the world. Many Prime Ministers of Japan still visit
the Shrine despite other world leaders showing disapproval. The Japanese people and government
know the importance of past traditions and memory because it made Japan into a powerful nation in
the past. The Japanese people and government officials realize it is important to keep religion and
politics together in some way because it can create a lot positive impact for a nation. It kept Japan
together despite the hardships they might have faced such as losing to the allies and their cities
being destroyed. Yet Japan overcame these problems and they are one of the top countries in the
world in technological advancement. It was because of their strong faith toward religion and the
political system, which motivated people to rebuild. Another country in the modern world for
example is Israel that has a strong religion and political system. Israel is located in the most
dangerous regions in the world, but they stood their ground against their neighboring countries. The
country was united by religion and politics to combat any issues they might have to face in the
future. The Israel flag includes religion because the flag has the symbol of "David Star", which

The Is A Japan 's Symbolic Image
Yasukuni shrine, is a Japan's symbolic image. Located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, this shrine is widely
recognized as a Shinto Shrine. Founded on June 1869 by the Emperor Meiji himself, its existence
has the purpose of commemorating those who have fallen for the Empire of Japan. Also the original
name is Tōkyō Shōkonsha, which means shrine to summon the soul. There would not be much to
say if it was one in many normal Shinto shrines in Japan which their existence do not concerned
politics. The difference is that the shrine "specifically honors 2.5 million fallen heroes – officers,
personnel which died during military service" and 14 "considered–war–criminals" (particularly
class–A war criminals) in the World War II – when Japan was a fascist regime – were being
enshrined (spiritually kept in the shrine through a sort of traditional Japanese ceremony).
Related to this topic is the article: "The Yasukuni Shrine dispute and the politics of identity in
Japan" by Daiki Shibuichi. From the beginning, the article started with the question: "Why all the
fuss". The fuss mentioning is the complexity of Japan's attitude toward the Yasukuni Shrine to
reconcile the nation's political identities through it. In general, the whole text is focused on the role
of Japanese rightist and the aspect of identity politics in Japan (as mentioned in the abstract).

Imperialism In Japan
I am interested the Imperialism because I thought it was a very important theory in Japan. The
imperialism included the features of extreme nationalism and militarism. The result of spread of
imperialism in Japan was the loyalty of Japanese toward government was extremely high. They
were willing to use their life to help the country. In fact, it was definitely one of the reasons that
cause the strong and hard to defeat of Japan in the WWII. Even at now, there are imperialists in
Japan. Their attitudes are still anti–Chinese. There are actually some anti–Chinese protests in Japan
nowadays too. Moreover, because of the rapid development of both China and Japan, there are some
conflicts between two countries. The imperialists stated Japan should show strong attitude in the
conflicts of oil field and Diaoyu Island. So, I want to know how the militarism actually affected the
Sino–Japanese relationship in the modern period. In fact, after the Second World War, the Sino–
Japanese relationship had some improvement. There were some conference and statements signed
between Japan and China. In 1972, there was a Japan–China Joint Statement which states that Japan
"keenly feels responsibility for" and deeply reflects upon the losses inflicted on the people of China
during the war. Moreover, Emperor Akihito's visit to China and said" In ... Show more content on

Introduction
This paper will analyze Shriners Hospital for children, a non–profit hospital system owned by
Shriners International, through the theoretical lens of Bolman and Deals Leadership Frameworks
(1997). This paper will define structural and symbolic aspects of the organization, analyze strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats through structural assessment to identify growth and risk
potential, and propose possible solutions for identified issues.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a non–profit hospital system that maintains 22 hospitals for
children in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. 18 of the hospitals provide orthopedic
specialization; three hospitals focus on burn care, and one hospital offers burn, spinal, and
orthopedic care. The first hospital was opened in Shreveport Louisiana, in 1922 by Shriners
International, a fraternal organization for men. The hospitals provide cutting edge care for a variety
of condition, actively engage in research for cures to childhood diseases and improvement to
orthopedic and burn treatments (Schumaker, 2005).

reflects a common response of hedging against China's rise. With the jury still out, on whether
China is seeking to establish a new regional order, the best strategy at the disposal of regional
countries remains to simultaneously balance against and engage with the rising power . The real
issue for the U.S. is the trilateral agreements do not include North Korea and their nuclear program

Yasukuni Issue Summary
Japanese Prime Minister Junichi Koizumi brought relations between China and Japan to a standstill
with his annual visits to Yasukuni Shrine. John Breen's edited volume, Yasukuni, the War Dead and
the Struggle for Japan's Past (2008) explores this political break, and fills a gap in the literature with
balanced debate. His text is a timely contribution, which not only debates Koizumi's Yasukuni issue,
but also highlights the challenges facing the incoming Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, by bringing to
the fore the intersection of politics, history, and religion, and highlighting the ways in which
reconciliation can be wielded as a political tool. Yasukuni is a compilation of varied, and detailed
articles, which intimately address the various perspectives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Yasukuni is a product of the Meiji Restoration's State–Shinto, rather than the traditional shinto
practice native to Japan. Takahashi Tetsuya supports Breens claims arguing that the Yasukuni
ideology was "essential and instrumental in raising the morale of the Japanese military, and in the
spiritual mobilization of the entire populace for war." (pg 110) These arguments prove that the
purpose of Yasukuni is fundamentally based in political rhetoric. Wang Zhixin argues that China has
recognised the political foundation of Yasukuni from the beginning of the 20th Century, and
Caroline Rose explores the political ramifications of Prime Ministerial shrine visits. Her chapter
highlights the dichotomous nature of Yasukuni shrine, as a representation of Japanese aggression in
neighboring countries, and a tool of spiritual healing within Japan. Although the Yasukuni issue is
one small part of a broader East Asian reconciliation problem, Breen's volume highlights the way
memory of conflict has been utilised as a tool of

Modern Day China
Throughout World War II, China had faced a cruel and humiliating occupation by the Empire of
Japan. A time where the Japanese held control over vast areas of Chinese land for 8 long years. After
the defeat of the Japanese by allied forces, China had always had its own way of celebrating these
occasions. Today in the 21st century, the Leader of modern day China, President Xi Jinping, has
proposed an interesting and relatively new way to celebrate the Chinese 70th anniversary victory
over Japan. In the article "Beijing risks a no–show at WWII events as Western leaders fear
jingoism", The Japan Times, show how President Xi is making as many attempts as possible to
strengthen foreign relations as much as possible, by inviting all the major western powers to
celebrate. President Xi even went as far as inviting the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the
event located at Beijing along with several other Asian nations. Usually, the celebration of the
ending of World War II is not as big in China compared to the many other nations who were
victorious. He even invited the other nation's military forces to march in China's parade. ... Show

The Fallen Hero "Wake up, Riku, wake up." "Who are you?" Riku yawns while he slowly gets up.
"Wake up, young hero, it is time for you to stand up to darkness once more. You have been in deep

After the voice stopped, Riku got out of the sleeping chamber he was in. He walked out of the

The Yasukuni Shrine and the Rise of Japan
The Yasukuni Shrine and the Rise of Japan's New Nationalism The Yasukuni Shrine is a Shinto
shrine established in 1869 in Tokyo. It was constructed in order to honor and worship the soldiers
who have died for their country in the Boshin Civil War that brought about the Meiji restoration and
sacrificed their lives in the service of their emperor to build a firm foundation for Japan to become a
truly peaceful country. For some Asian countries such as China and South Korea, which had been

For the leftist and liberals, the Rape of Nanking is a key symbol of cruel Japanese militarism. They
used the sympathy for civilian casualties to substantiate Article 9 of the constitution, which is
essential to avoid another Nanking Massacre and to prevent Japan from waging wars in the future,
and they viewed that the presence of Yasukuni proves the resurgence of Japanese militarism and the
continual existence of feudalism in modern Japanese society. However, the rightist conservative
camp in Japan is rising to prominence on a wave of patriotic assertiveness, and their influence is
evident in the rewriting of Japanese textbooks to deny imperial Japan's conquest in China.
Therefore, in addition to its militaristic history and ideology chasm between political camps, the
symbolism of Yasukuni adds external political pressure on Japanese government to re–examine the
articulation of its wartime past. Not only does the Yasukuni controversy generated disapproval from
Japan's Asian neighbors, it also created domestic debate between the leftist and rightist political

The Pros And Cons Of Nationalism
Nationalism is a powerful force that can unite people working towards a common goal, but when it
is taken to the extreme it can cause major disharmony in society, evident in the numerous genocides
during the Age of Imperialism, the Fascist party's rise to power, and the Japanese's unwillingness to
surrender during World War II. Nationalism is dangerous, because it warps the minds of the
individuals in the organization, creates prejudice and discrimination, and can be easily manipulated
into a weapon against humanity.
Nationalism has many benefits such as, consolidating a group of people into dynamism and "[Based
on the psychological perspective] it fulfills economic, sociocultural, and political needs, giving
individuals a sense of security, a feeling of belonging, and prestige"(Druckman). The point of view
is supported by past historical events, such as how the European nations expanded their trade by
creating colonies around the world during the Colonial Era, and how the Germans' pulled
themselves out of economic depression after World War I. To many Germans, "economic growth
was a strong motivation to join the Nazi Party" (Ghostlaw). This led to the formation of fanaticism
for their own country, as they were all focused on a common objective. Additionally, nationalism
also promoted the growth of Europeans during the Age of Imperialism in forms of Social
Darwinism. Social Darwinism is the concept of "Survival of the fittest" (Editors of Encyclopædia
Britannica). Based on

Analysis Of Buddha In The Land Of Kami
Buddha in the Land of Kami reviews Japan on a historical account. It revisits the story of the Kami
and elaborates on the country's uniqueness. Significant to Japanese culture, this film recognizes
Chinese culture as the primary influence on Japan formation. The film given categorizes as a
historical documentary that appears to be in the setting of Japan from the seventh and twelfth
centuries. Although World History; Culture, States and Societies, explore a different time frame
(500 B.C.E– Seventh century), there are still many similarities as compared to the documentary;
such as the importance of the Kami, and the role Chinese culture play on the development of Japan.
Shintoism: The Way of the Kami. Israel defines Kami as spirits that affiliate with natural objects
such as the sun and the moon. In the opening of Buddha in the Land of the Kami, the narrator shares
the historical background of the Kami, stating that a spiritual duo came down to Earth to stir up the
sea waters, creating the archipelago of Japan. The sprits figure out reproduction and multiply,
inhabiting the chain of Islands known as Japan. The narrators also mention the Kami in mountains,
wind, grass and other natural entities. According to the film, spiritual rituals performed in earlier
eras show continuity in Shinto shrines today. Israel explains that later, during the Asuka–Nara

building with paintings of a hero vanquishing evil. Then a mysterious man, yet somewhat felt
familiar to Riku walked towards him. "Hey, check this out, Riku. It's a part of the prophecy that's to
come and it says the hero will vanquish evil when it comes. I wonder who the hero will be. Who
ever it is, they will be the greatest hero of them all," said the mysterious man while smiling at Riku.
After that, Riku came back to his senses, and the statue began to flash. Riku walk towards the statue.
The light from the statue then blinded Riku and the area around the temple. When the blinding light
disappear, in Riku's hand was a device. Then, the old man from before appeared at the entrance of
the temple. "That device right there can serve as your map, it is made of ancient technology. Around
this land, you will find shrines similar to the

Zoroastrian Culture
1– One of the easiest and most typical theories about the origin of these sacred sites is to rely on
their myth, with some adjustments, as a real historical event. Based on this theory, we can assume
that the family of the Yazdegerd III, with their treasures, was fleeing from the Arab invaders to a
safer place far away from Pars, the heartland of the Sasanians, towards Xorāsān in the northeast of
Iran. According to the shrines' legend, when Yazdgerd's family reached to a mountainous area,
called Aghdā, the pursuers got closer to them. Therefore, they separated and tried to find shelter in
different mountains. Then, the legend says that when each of them was near to be captured, they
prayed to the God for help and consequently they were miraculously ... Show more content on

38–40) assumes that the Zoroastrian shrine of Pīr–e Bānū–Pārs 'lady of Pārs' was originally a shrine
dedicated to Ānāhid as the Lady patron of Pārs region. Then, the priests of this shrine became aware
of the story adjusted for Ānāhid's old shrine at Ray. Therefore, a similar belief gradually grew
among them that the shrine they served was dedicated to a historical figure linked with the
Yazdgird's family. Furthermore, it is probable that Muslim's coercion expedited the Zoroastrian's
tendency to believe this story in order to protect the former Ānāhid's Shrine.
Finally, Boyce (1967, p. 40–42) poses that, at an early stage, the legend of Bānū Pars was imitated
for Pīr–e Sabz, probably because it was also a shrine of Ānāhid. Later, at late nineteenth century and
during the time of literacy, variants of the original legends, developed for the other major shrines.
As it is mentioned before, lack of evidence enters us into the realm of speculation in which all of the
above theories can be partially true. Here, I do not want to support or refute any of these hypotheses
but rather, I want to remind one important point; there is no necessity to find the origin of something
in a glorious ancient past. For instance, when you speak with Zoroastrian villagers they confess that
many of their smaller local or garden–type shrines have developed from simple one room buildings,
which were used by farmers as temporary

Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre

  • 1. Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded, killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people's homes searching for Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the "Rape of Nanking", or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help the government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own views on their history. The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations. The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre lasted for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The title "Rape of Nanking" is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 . Some of the Chinese captives, some of which were Chinese soldiers, were forced to dig graves for groups of other captives to be buried alive in, and then would be buried themselves when the next group of captives dug a new grave . • 2. How Does Matsuo Basho's Journey Affect Literature Matsuo Basho's journey has a significant impact on literature due to his well–written journals that reveal his lifestyle and experiences. In his first journal, The Records of a Weather–exposed Skeleton, Basho conveys his spiritual thoughts and religious life that he experiences on a new journey. Basho's journal contains several poems as he further reveals different people, traditions, and significant places that made his journey more memorable. In Matsuo Basho's first journal he reveals the several reasons on why he is travelling. Basho departs from his home into the North in order to experience the culture aspects and nature of Japan. Throughout, the first journal, we see Basho's search for enlightenment in his pilgrimage. We see the different locations that Basho has gone to in order to learn more and to be part of the traditions. As stated by Basho, "...I left my broken house on the River Sumida in the August of the first year of Jyokyo among the wails of the autumn wind" (Basho 51). This quote explains that Basho leaves his home on a long pilgrimage in order to discover more about religion and develop a better understanding about Japanese culture as he is motivated to gain enlightenment. As he travels we readers realize how Basho becomes aware at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a poet Basho's phenomenal word choice and description allowed us readers to view his journey as if we are there with him. It is amazing to see that Basho is such a religious person who has visited various shrines, temples, and met many new and old friends and created new haiku's. In addition, this reading was interesting to me because it shows Basho's motivation to become more enlightened and his choice to live according to Buddha's life as expressed through his poems. • 3. Iris Chang's The Rape Of Nanking And The Forgotten Holocaust Nanking, now modern day Nanjing, was once the former capital of China, boasting a flourishing economy. However, the tranquility of the populous city would soon collapse. In 1937, the Japanese army attacked the capital, and for weeks bloodshed and rape ensued. In the midst of war, the city became dilapidated and riddled with destruction. The aftermath resulted in a debatable death toll, ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers. Despite the atrocities and chaos that happened, there are little media representations on the Nanking massacre. Mass media can tell the story of an event that official documents cannot share. The Holocaust, for example, is internationally known to be a horrific, tragic event ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, only the bombing of Nagasaki an Hiroshima became highlighted in history and engrained into the memory of the public, while the Nanking massacre, which Chang describes as the Forgotten Holocaust in the subtitle of her book, became lost in history. Japanese people who sought justice for Nanking were silenced by death threats, burying the event more. On the other hand, Germany, regarding the Holocaust, put the blame on not only the army, but also their own government. The German government focused on their government's indirect participation in the atrocities that ensued in the Holocaust– taking full responsibility for what happened. In the media, there were respectable figures who spoke out against the existence of the massacre. Chang gives many examples of political figures who spread the idea that the Nanking massacre was a falsified event. In 1988, minister of education and prefectural Kempeitai director, told reporters at the notorious Yasukuni shrine, where the lives of the cruellest war criminals are celebrated, that "there was no intention of aggression" in China. Instead, he claimed that the "white race made Asia into a colony, but only Japan is blamed". Later, after facing heated backlash in Asia, he changed his argument, explaining he "didn't say Japan ... • 4. Autry Museums In Autry article, she stated that "how national histories marred by racial conflict can be translated into narratives of group identity formation" (Autry, 57). Autry is trying to say that museums is a sacred place of memory and trauma. When traveling through these museums the author notice that the most common themes were "capture and displacement from Africa, enslavement, and racial segregation" (Autry 64). When she notices that these were the three main topics being shown to the public then it's a major problem. She felt that the museums had too much power because they were choosing certain information to be displayed about the struggles of African Americans. The author wants to show that over time that a museum can change and can interpret things in a new way in order to attract ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the museum can thrive. She explains that "identities are performed ideologies interrogated and cultural symbols reinvented" (Autry 60). The author is trying to say that certain items are displayed in a museum for a reason by trying to send a certain message. When she talks about how cultural symbols are reinvented it shows that museums is trying to change the people's perspectives by creating a new meaning for a certain symbol. Another problem that the author has noticed is that some parts of the African American culture are disappearing because for example there was a "city's decision to invest in a new commercial enterprise, rather than supporting smaller, more locally–oriented museums." (Autry 75). The government does not support the local museums than it causes issues because some of the history is lost. The memory is lost from the local regional area, which could have added a new perspective towards a certain standpoint. Compare and Contrast Kami and Shen, the Japanese and Chinese Words for God The words kami in Japanese and shen in Chinese both are translated into English as the word god. Although they both refer to somewhat similar supernatural elements, they are by no means identical to each other. Chinese shen is an abstract term referring to spirits and relating to abstract thoughts such as the heavens and the afterlife. In contrast, kami are very often related directly to a person or actual object and are worshiped in a hope for more day–to–day help or this worldly benefits. Because they are difficult to understand through natural reasoning, they are seen as mystical. The first category of shen, human spirits, can also include the human soul. These are spoken of in Chinese literature such as "The Scripture of the Yellow Court" which documents specific deities (shen) living within the human body. "The spirits of the liver, lungs, and spleen are above, representing Heaven, as contrasted with the navel... representing the underworld of matter and generation" (Kroll 362–3). This document goes on to cite the roles that many of the shen living inside of you perform. "And the sacred estrade of the heart will prove an everlastingly impregnable structure" (365). Of the spirits inside of you, the most important are those of the heart. The "Simple Questions of the Yellow Emperor" also describes the heart as the most important: "The heart functions as the prince and governs through the shen; the lungs are liaison officers who promulgate rules and regulations; the liver is a general and devises strategies (qtd. in Schipper 100). Visit Of The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir On Prescott Avenue When it comes to the topic of understanding religions other than one's own, most are educated by what they have learned through their reading, or have been taught by professors, colleagues, friends and neighbors. I chose to visit the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir on Prescott Avenue mainly because of my curiosity regarding the diversity of the practice of Hindusim. There I thought it would be best to stop in and inform the young man in the office (whose name has slipped my memory) that we were visiting as part of our course. He welcomed us and explained that today was their celebration of Dewali and that they were expecting close to 500 people. He came out of the office and brought us down the center isle up to the shrine. I couldn't hear much of what he was saying, partly due his accent, but also due to the loud music that was being played by a few worshipers just a few feet away. The shrine was composed of three figures covered in brightly colored decorative ornaments and clothing. The figures stood in a large altar that appeared to be beautifully carved and finished wood that was lined with strips of lights that flickered colored patterns throughout the service. Below the altar was an assortment of foods and fruits, which were aesthetically prepared and plated. More than 50 years of division has influenced the culture and national opinions of the Korean people. The two Koreas see each other as political and military enemies, but they also see themselves as an ethnically homogenous nation. So there is a strong desire on both sides of the fence to reunify so that a unified Korean nation state can be created. The reunification of the nation is one of the largest political projects in both South and North Korea. This ethnic nationalism allows for occasional cooperation between the two countries such as North Korea and South Korea marching together for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics and 2006 Turin Olympics. "By identifying the modern as a cluster of related principles rather than as merely a period, we are able to trace its occurrence in different periods in different national or cultural settings" (Goto–Jones, 7). The idea of what is culture and what is modern can be subjective. Time and setting are merely measurements showcasing a particular in relation to everything else. Although Goto–Jones is critical of what it means to be "modern," reasons supporting his opinion on whether Japan is modern or not can be given by looking at some of the changes Japan has made; observations of the dynamic and stagnant in Japan's past and present. Within the short time frame, a significant transformation in political, industrial, and societal means took hold, seeing Japan as a great power within the world. Emperor Meiji's death in 1912 saw in end of an era at its own representation (Goto–Jones, 70). More change came as the Japanese social environment felt to be continually bewildered by the western powers. In response, this drove Japan to imperialize and eventually join World War II. After losing the war, Japan was subjected for significant change once again. With the 1947 Constitution it is the people who hold sovereignty, as opposed to The Emperor who did so in the Meiji Constitution (Goto–Jones, 96). A contribution and push to Japan's unique adoption of modernization after World War II can be attributed to pressings such as Article 9, which prohibits Japan from being able to declare war, and from possessing military power other than the minimum necessary to defend the nation. This, along with the Reverse Course. This helped Japan move more towards a modern democracy by having its foreign policy based around its relationship with the US, which set Japan as a beacon of US policy in Asia (Goto– Jones, 97). The Church encouraged pilgrimages to various holy places, or shrines, to search for spiritual enlightenment and penitence from sin. This ideology says that if one were to pray at a shrine, one could be forgiven of one's sins, thus increasing the chance of going to Heaven after an earthly death. Those suffering from a plethora of aliments and other illnesses might also make a pilgrimage in the hope of being healed of it. Because of the popularity of pilgrimages, King Henry VIII made an inquiry about the nature of pilgrimages in 1535. Once Henry read the dispositions made by his research team, the king made the decision to close over 300 monasteries across the land. Among the results of this decision was the selling of the land formerly held by the monasteries to smaller farmers. China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict Enchantria Fleming Excelsior College For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino– Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino–Japanese war nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence. The First Sino– Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea was already one of China 's most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology, Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China. Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries by signing of the Li– Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. So I think in order to have a better understanding of why Sino–Japanese relation is that much tense all the time, we need to know the background that is history of two countries. I will start from the second Sino–Japanese War because it was the largest Asian War and the most devastating War for the Republic of China. The Nanking Massacre, also known as the rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanking during the Second Sino–Japanese War, which also happened during the World War Two. The massacre started from December 13, 1937 and it lasted six weeks. During this period, tens of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. And widespread rape and looting also occurred. There is not an accurate estimation of the death roll in the massacre, because most of Japanese military records on the killings were destroyed or kept secret for some reasons. Chang who published her book The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, wrote of the death toll estimates given by different sources; "Chinese military specialist Liu Fang–chu proposed a figure of 430,000, officials at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and the procurator of the District Court of Nanjing in 1946 stated at least 300,000 were killed, ... Germany 's Defeat During World War II Essay In the year 1945 as a consequence of Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II the country was forcibly split between four powers the Soviets in the East and Allies of the West in a period known as the division of Germany. The country was stripped of its many spoils of war and lost all of its territories in the east. At the Potsdam Conference Prime Minister Clement Attlee of Britain, Premier Stalin, and President Truman put forth the guiding ethos for the Allied Control Council: Germany's complete and total disarmament and demilitarization, destruction of its war potential rigid control over it's industries, and the decentralization of the political and economic structure. Finally, for purposes of Political control Germany was divided into four national zones to be occupied by the allied forces. The occupation of West Germany by the allies would last well into the Cold War, whilst East Germany, would remain under Soviet influence until after the Cold War had ended. It should also be noted that West Germany adopted a more capitalistic model while the East side of Germany remained a Communist society till after the Cold War. It can be said that post World War II until after the Cold War Germany also shares a similar history, and restrictions with its former wartime ally Japan. She continues on to say that they exist for the elite, that few common people would have seen them, at that if they ever did it would signify to them the elite's power and connection to the gods. She begins her argument by introducing past interpretations and the issues that arise from them, then explains the possible significance of the floral motifs in landscapes, and finishes with her interpretation of their meaning to the Minoan people. Evans begun the debate of what the landscapes mean in Aegean art when he declared that the Monkeys and Blue Bird Fresco was for a secular use of just existing for its aesthetic. Marinatos observed that the existence of crocuses and lilies are normally used as decoration for alters and offering tables, and that monkeys and doves are often in connection with goddesses, giving the fresco a much more religious connotation than Evans had originally believed. There would not be much to say if it was one in many normal Shinto shrines in Japan which their existence do not concerned politics. The difference is that the shrine "specifically honors 2.5 million fallen heroes – officers, personnel which died during military service" and 14 "considered–war–criminals" (particularly class–A war criminals) in the World War II – when Japan was a fascist regime – were being enshrined (spiritually kept in the shrine through a sort of traditional Japanese ceremony). Related to this topic is the article: "The Yasukuni Shrine dispute and the politics of identity in Japan" by Daiki Shibuichi. From the beginning, the article started with the question: "Why all the fuss". The fuss mentioning is the complexity of Japan's attitude toward the Yasukuni Shrine to reconcile the nation's political identities through it. In general, the whole text is focused on the role of Japanese rightist and the aspect of identity politics in Japan (as mentioned in the abstract). The author wrote that it is a must to visit the Yasukuni Shrine for anyone who is interested in Japan's society and politics. So that the shrine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The result of spread of imperialism in Japan was the loyalty of Japanese toward government was extremely high. They were willing to use their life to help the country. In fact, it was definitely one of the reasons that cause the strong and hard to defeat of Japan in the WWII. Even at now, there are imperialists in Japan. Their attitudes are still anti–Chinese. There are actually some anti–Chinese protests in Japan nowadays too. Moreover, because of the rapid development of both China and Japan, there are some conflicts between two countries. The imperialists stated Japan should show strong attitude in the conflicts of oil field and Diaoyu Island. So, I want to know how the militarism actually affected the Sino–Japanese relationship in the modern period. In fact, after the Second World War, the Sino– Japanese relationship had some improvement. There were some conference and statements signed between Japan and China. In 1972, there was a Japan–China Joint Statement which states that Japan "keenly feels responsibility for" and deeply reflects upon the losses inflicted on the people of China during the war. John Breen's edited volume, Yasukuni, the War Dead and the Struggle for Japan's Past (2008) explores this political break, and fills a gap in the literature with balanced debate. His text is a timely contribution, which not only debates Koizumi's Yasukuni issue, but also highlights the challenges facing the incoming Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, by bringing to the fore the intersection of politics, history, and religion, and highlighting the ways in which reconciliation can be wielded as a political tool. Yasukuni is a product of the Meiji Restoration's State–Shinto, rather than the traditional shinto practice native to Japan. Takahashi Tetsuya supports Breens claims arguing that the Yasukuni ideology was "essential and instrumental in raising the morale of the Japanese military, and in the spiritual mobilization of the entire populace for war." (pg 110) These arguments prove that the purpose of Yasukuni is fundamentally based in political rhetoric. Wang Zhixin argues that China has recognised the political foundation of Yasukuni from the beginning of the 20th Century, and Caroline Rose explores the political ramifications of Prime Ministerial shrine visits. Her chapter highlights the dichotomous nature of Yasukuni shrine, as a representation of Japanese aggression in neighboring countries, and a tool of spiritual healing within Japan. A time where the Japanese held control over vast areas of Chinese land for 8 long years. After the defeat of the Japanese by allied forces, China had always had its own way of celebrating these occasions. Today in the 21st century, the Leader of modern day China, President Xi Jinping, has proposed an interesting and relatively new way to celebrate the Chinese 70th anniversary victory over Japan. It was constructed in order to honor and worship the soldiers who have died for their country in the Boshin Civil War that brought about the Meiji restoration and sacrificed their lives in the service of their emperor to build a firm foundation for Japan to become a truly peaceful country. They used the sympathy for civilian casualties to substantiate Article 9 of the constitution, which is essential to avoid another Nanking Massacre and to prevent Japan from waging wars in the future, and they viewed that the presence of Yasukuni proves the resurgence of Japanese militarism and the continual existence of feudalism in modern Japanese society. However, the rightist conservative camp in Japan is rising to prominence on a wave of patriotic assertiveness, and their influence is evident in the rewriting of Japanese textbooks to deny imperial Japan's conquest in China. • 32. The Pros And Cons Of Nationalism Nationalism is a powerful force that can unite people working towards a common goal, but when it is taken to the extreme it can cause major disharmony in society, evident in the numerous genocides during the Age of Imperialism, the Fascist party's rise to power, and the Japanese's unwillingness to surrender during World War II. Nationalism is dangerous, because it warps the minds of the individuals in the organization, creates prejudice and discrimination, and can be easily manipulated into a weapon against humanity. Nationalism has many benefits such as, consolidating a group of people into dynamism and "[Based on the psychological perspective] it fulfills economic, sociocultural, and political needs, giving individuals a sense of security, a feeling of belonging, and prestige"(Druckman). The point of view is supported by past historical events, such as how the European nations expanded their trade by creating colonies around the world during the Colonial Era, and how the Germans' pulled themselves out of economic depression after World War I. To many Germans, "economic growth was a strong motivation to join the Nazi Party" (Ghostlaw). This led to the formation of fanaticism for their own country, as they were all focused on a common objective. Additionally, nationalism also promoted the growth of Europeans during the Age of Imperialism in forms of Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is the concept of "Survival of the fittest" (Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica). Based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on this theory, we can assume that the family of the Yazdegerd III, with their treasures, was fleeing from the Arab invaders to a safer place far away from Pars, the heartland of the Sasanians, towards Xorāsān in the northeast of Iran. According to the shrines' legend, when Yazdgerd's family reached to a mountainous area, called Aghdā, the pursuers got closer to them. Then, the priests of this shrine became aware of the story adjusted for Ānāhid's old shrine at Ray. Therefore, a similar belief gradually grew among them that the shrine they served was dedicated to a historical figure linked with the Yazdgird's family. Furthermore, it is probable that Muslim's coercion expedited the Zoroastrian's tendency to believe this story in order to protect the former Ānāhid's Shrine. Finally, Boyce (1967, p. 40–42) poses that, at an early stage, the legend of Bānū Pars was imitated for Pīr–e Sabz, probably because it was also a shrine of Ānāhid. Later, at late nineteenth century and during the time of literacy, variants of the original legends, developed for the other major shrines. As it is mentioned before, lack of evidence enters us into the realm of speculation in which all of the above theories can be partially true. Here, I do not want to support or refute any of these hypotheses but rather, I want to remind one important point; there is no necessity to find the origin of something in a glorious ancient past. For instance, when you speak with Zoroastrian villagers they confess that many of their smaller local or garden–type shrines have developed from simple one room buildings, which were used by farmers as temporary ...
