Advantages Of Brakes
CHAPTER–1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION TO BRAKES
Brakes are mechanical devices that increase the frictional resistance that retards the turning motion
that is supplied to the wheels of the vehicle. In a vacuum assisted hydraulic brake system, a constant
vacuum is kept maintained in the brake booster using the engine. When the brake pedal is pushed
down, a poppet valve opens and air pushes/rushes into the pressure chamber on the driver's side of
the booster. In a vacuum braking system, vacuum is used for the application of brakes.
Braking the train is a very complex process, particularly to rail vehicles and is of great importance
because of essential contribution on the safety of the moving vehicle. This complexity comes into
picture from the fact, that during braking process various phenomena occurs, of ... Show more

it should be same as in the brake pipe, during brake release but that the connection to the brake pipe
is closed during a brake application. It is important to close the connection as soon as the brake pipe
vacuum is reduced so that a difference in pressure is created between the upper and lower sides of
the brake cylinder piston.
1.4 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VACUUM BRAKES:
ADVANTAGES:
1. It provides partial release, which the air brake could not.
2. It consists of accelerator valves which help to speed up the operation on each vehicle.
3. It consists of two pipe system, in which one is brake pipe and the second was provided to give an
additional supply to speed up the brake release.
4. It consists of an equalizing reservoir which helps to set the brake to the right level.
5. Door operation , whistles, warning horns, etc. can be operated using the vacuum supply.
6. It is simple in design.
DISADVANTAGES:–
1. It takes longer time to

Intoduction
A brake is a mechanical gadget which hinders movement, abating or halting a moving vehicle or
keeping its movement.
Most brakes ordinarily utilize rubbing between two surfaces squeezed together to change over the
dynamic vitality of the moving article into warmth, however different routines for vitality
transformation may be utilized. For instance regenerative braking changes over a great part of the
vitality toelectrical vitality, which may be put away for later

Report On Rocket Sled Catchment Arresting Systems
Written Report Concerning Rocket Sled Catchment Arresting Systems
QinetiQ, a defence technology company headquartered in Farnborough, have a problem regarding
their Pendine long test track facility located in South Wales. The test track is 1500m long and test
items are powered down the track on sleds pushed by rocket motors. QinetiQ are finding a variety of
engineering challenges in containing the rocket motor sleds in relatively short distances at the end of
the track on high velocity trials (600m/s – 700m/s). There is often significant damage caused to the
capture systems used on such trials and the damage caused to them mean that they cannot be reused.

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Pneumatics
Introduction
The technology of Pneumatics deals with the application and uses of a compressible gas such as air
or a suitable pure gas but hydraulics uses an incompressible liquid such as oil. The application
started to grow due to a gradual shift towards automated machines and equipment. The introduction
of pneumatics in manufacturing has introduced the cheaper mode of production in wide areas of
application such as Packaging machinery, Bottle filling Industry, artificial heart, logic control
systems and robotic materials handling devices etc. Due to several advantages, pneumatics is
preferred over hydraulics. The coming future technology in this field is further improving the
hydraulics in terms of cost and energy efficiency.
The early application ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first compressors were seen around 3000 B.C. to provide small blows of air to aid in starting
fire. In around 1500 B.C, these simple devices were evolved into larger units and used in metal
smelting. Around the 18th century, mechanical compressors were used to do useful work, any many
experiments were done to test the power and applicability of pneumatic systems. Pneumatics was
used to power a tunneling project in Mt. Cenis, located in the Alps. If traditional drilling methods
were used (manual) the project would have taken around 30 long years. By using pneumatic drills,
the tunnel was completed in just 14 years and was open to traffic in 1871. This project caught the
attention of many government agencies and they began to talk of compressor stations for city–wide
power consumption. (6)
Paris was actually the first city to try pneumatics in 1888 when a 65 horsepower (HP) rated
compressor fed 4 miles of main wire with 30 miles of branch circuits delivering 90 psi. By 1891 the
capacity of the motor was increased to 25,000 HP. Electricity would become the most convenient on
large–scale energy transmission while pneumatics were used in more industrial applications
including power, process, and control

Science Fair Project Report
This year, for my Science Fair Project I plan to do a study on how varying system parameters affect
the dynamics of a multi–tank liquid–level hydraulic system. The purpose of this type of system is to
maintain a constant fluid flow. In order to maintain this fluid flow the tanks have to preserve a
certain liquid level, this necessary level depends on the other variables. My system will consist of:
an inflow valve, the tanks, valves to go between the tanks, and an outflow valve. I want to do this
experiment because about two years ago, when I was in the seventh grade, I did a science fair
experiment where I tested how changing the variables in a mass–spring–damper system affected
system response. In that experiment, I changed the amount of mass,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Coupler
Buffers and chain coupler (also called buffers and screw, screw coupler, or English coupler) is the
standard train coupling system used in Europe, outside the former Soviet Union. It is also
occasionally used outside Europe.
The vehicles are coupled by hand using a hook and links with a turnbuckle that draws the vehicles
together. In Britain, this is called ascrew coupling. Vehicles have buffers, one at each corner on the
ends, which are pulled together and compressed by the coupling device. This arrangement limits the
slack in trains and lessens shunting shocks. By contrast, the semi–automatic Janney coupler usually
requires comparatively jarring encounters in order to engage the coupling fully. The earliest buffers
were fixed extensions of the wagon frames, but later spring buffers were introduced.
Inefficient and slow, the European system is also relatively unsafe because – like the link–and–pin
coupling used in North America (and especially the United States) before the end of the 19th
century, when the Janney ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These couplings followed earlier tramway practice but were made more regular.
This coupling is still the standard in European countries (except the former Soviet Union, where the
SA–3 automatic coupler is used). Coupling is done by a worker who must climb between the cars.
First he winds the turnbuckle to the loose position, and then he can hang the chain on the hook.
After hanging the chain on the towing hook the turnbuckle handle is stowed on the idle hook to
prevent damage to itself, the vehicle, or the brake pipes. Only shunting is permitted with a dangling
chain. Disconnected brake pipes must be stowed on dummy connectors, to allow proper operation of
the brakes. (The picture shows two coupled cars, with a single brake

A Hydraulic Crane : The Present Work Is Carried Out On...
1.1 Telescopic crane: The present work is carried out on telescopic crane. A telescopic hydraulic
crane has a boom that consists of a number of tubes fitted one inside the other. A hydraulic or other
powered mechanism extends or retracts the tubes to increase or decrease the total length of the
boom. It uses one or more simple machines to create mechanical advantage and thus moves loads
beyond the normal capability of human. These types of booms are often used for short term
construction projects rescue jobs, lifting boats in and out of the water, etc. The relative compactness
of telescopic booms makes them adaptable for many mobile applications. Boom play objective role
in the load lifting operation and the maximum direct effect of the stress is initializing from it and
effects to another attached assemblies of crane. Sometimes this crane is truck mounted to travel on
highway and eliminating the need of the special transportation for crane. The telescopic boom is
composed of a series of rectangular shaped symmetrically cross–sectional segments which are fitted
with one inside the other. The boom base section is the largest segment while the boom tip section is
the smallest. In between there are six sections exist in the telescopic crane boom. There are different
types of Telescopic booms which may be pinned boom, full powered boom, or a combination of
both pinned boom and full powered boom. A pinned boom is one in which sections are pinned in the

.2. Maintenance Communication My maintenance duties consist of a myriad of working knowledge
of power tools, hand tools and heavy equipment. I am required to have a working knowledge and to
be proficient in the use of precision tools like multi–meter, volt meter, dial calipers, and
micrometers. I must also possess the skills to train others to use them. Basic knowledge of drawings,
prints, and schematics is required. I conduct or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quality communication was essential in each of these situations not only for the repair but the safety
of everyone. The maintenance part of my job requires me to research where to find replacement
parts for an aging system or like parts of the existing system every time something breaks or needs
preventative maintenance. I must read and research prints and plans for circuits and piping. There is
not a perfect manual for everything so, I must research and test hypothesis –to troubleshoot
mechanical, lighting, hydraulic pumps etc. The data is then input into FEMS (Facilities and
Equipment Maintenance System) to track hours worked and non–routine maintenance. Maintenance
is consistently monitored and stored in the FEM system which has a record everything the operator
needs to do to keep the facility running such as storing work orders. An example of data we store
beyond maintenance hours and scheduling, is the gap in the bull nose, which is an opening in the
concrete at the end of the guard wall where the boats enter. The guard wall keeps the boat from
moving over and hitting the dam. This crack is frequently measured and recorded for repair and
safety purposes.

and nonverbal communication. I have given on the job training and taught numerous classes in the

The Sampling Interval For The Current Clamps
The sampling interval for the current clamps can be changed depending on what we want to know.
For the air compressor we may log more frequently, for example every five seconds, if we find that
the compressor is switching mode very frequently, otherwise logging at 60–second intervals may be
enough. The purpose of the continuous measurement will also affect the logging interval. If the first
visit gives us the impression that the compressed air system is an important part of the energy use,
we may measure more carefully to have enough information to suggest detailed measures. The
drawing of the electric
(Table 3. Example of plan for energy measurements to allocate electricity use to unit processes.)
In this case we will have a measurement from a switchgear cabinet that covers several unit
processes, for example lighting and forklift charging for a garage and picking stock, as shown in
Figure 8. The data from clamp no. 1 in the switchgear must be complemented by simulta‐ neous
measurements from clamps 2 and 3 in the distribution board, where clamp 2 measures the total
incoming current to the Central Garage board and clamp 3 measures the outgoing current to the
forklift chargers. Later, the data from clamp 2 in the Central Garage distribution board can be
subtracted from clamp 1 in the switchgear to get a picture of the energy use in Central Picking Stock
and Central Large Hall. At the same time you have parallel measurements of the air compressor

All About the Brake-Assist System Essay
The Brake Assisted System
The purpose of the brake assisted system
The purpose of the brake assisted system is assist when the user applies force to the brake pedal that
is not sufficient enough to stop the vehicle. Based on the speed and force to which the brake pedal is
pressed, the brake assisted system will detect if an emergency is taking place or could have taken
place. The brake assist system increases the brake pressure until the ABS regulation intervenes to
prevent the wheels from locking. This way the greatest possible braking effect can be achieved and
the brake path can be shortened significantly.
There are two types of brake assist system which are as follows:
1. The hydraulic brake assist system
2. The mechanical brake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trigger threshold is presented in the graph. In the green area above this trigger threshold, the
brake assist system is active. 1. Calculate the benefits of using brake assisted system.
Using brake assisted system can prevent your brakes and wheel from locking and furthermore
causing an accident to occur. In situation where the vehicle in front of you stop suddenly; the
function of the brake assisted system is to prevent you from losing control.
2. How much actually exert in the brake when using manual braking system?
If we were to take a look at a situation where the piston in the master cylinder is pushes 40mm with
10N force. It is understood that the slave piston will then move 10mm with a force of 40N. Now,
that force can be further increased by inserting a lever connected between piston, pedal and pivot
point. Note that, if the distance from the pedal to the pivot is 3 times the distance from the pivot to
the connected piston, then it multiplies the pedal force by a factor of 3, as the user is pushing down
on the pedal.
In case of a user who pushes pedal 120mm down with 10N force, 30N force will be applied to the
master piston and slave piston move the brake pad by 10mm of a force of 120N.
3. How much actually exert in the brake when using power system?
When the diaphragm moves towards the lower pressure chamber it creates a force in relation to the
area of the diaphragm and the differential pressure. This force that has

Why Cars Are Bad
I think we can all agree cars are great fun to drive. We also like comparing cars side by side, lining
up the specs: horse power, torque ratios, top speed, and especially 0–60 times. One spec, just as
important as the rest that is often overlooked is 60 – 0 times, or stopping times. But the fact is that
cars must stop. Many of today's cars do that function using something called Antilock Braking or
ABS. ABS uses sensors to monitor the wheel speed in order to determine if a wheel, or multiple
wheels, are about to lock up. If the sensors determine this is happening, a series of hydraulic valves
limit or reduce the braking on that or those wheels. ABS works on all four tires. Good braking is
vital for first and foremost safety, and on more of

Defective Linear Tires
The objective of this tutorial is to instruct the reader how to swap a defective car tire for a spare.
Spare tires can be used as a makeshift fix so that the driver can safely make it to a repair shop. Basic
knowledge of tools and fasteners is needed for this tutorial. Failure to follow instructions closely
may lead to personal injury, damage to your vehicle, or can cause an accident on the road. If you are
in doubt whether or not you can handle the tutorial, call a professional or a towing company to assist
you. Changing a car tire requires a set of basic tools. Many of these can be found in the average
emergency car kit, but some parts need to be purchased extra. A crucial tool to the process is a car
jack. This will hold the car up while you are working. Also, some form of a wrench to tighten and
loosen the lug nuts will be necessary. There are many options for this, such as a pneumatic or
hydraulic powered wrench. However, since this tutorial is focused mainly on emergency situations,
the most common form of wrench is called a tire iron. Most hardware and auto shops have these.
While it may be the most difficult way to tighten lug nuts, tire irons are easily stored and are the
cheapest form of wrench. Assuming you are on the road when a blow out were to occur, the first
step of changing a tire is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

hubcap upside down and place each lug nut in there to prevent losing them. Continue the process for
all five or six lug nuts, depending on the car model. After all nuts have been removed, the tire and
rim should slide off of the pins that the tire rests

Aging Brakking System
Losing your brakes doesn't happen that often but it is possible in old cars with aging braking
systems. The most important thing that will get you safely through such an event is knowing in
advance what to do because you won't have enough time to figure things out. This means reading
and thinking about the proper steps to take. As your automobile insurance agency, we are concerned
about your safety and would like to provide this step–by–step guide for bringing your car to a stop if
its braking system should ever fail:
Remain Calm
Panic will make your situation worse. As we mentioned above, it's all about knowing what to do and
automatically going through the steps.

Or is the pedal jammed? If it goes to the floor, pump the brakes and you may build up some
hydraulic pressure that will give you braking action. Push the pedal as far as you can and repeat.
With ABS brakes, you should apply a steady and firm pressure to the brake pedal. If the brake feels
jammed, there may be an object beneath the pedal. Check for this with your foot.
Downshift and Use the Parking Brake
The choice between down shifting or using your parking brake depends on your speed. If you are
going at slow speeds such as in your driveway or are about to reach an intersection, you can
aggressively use your parking brake. However, using them too hard at higher speeds will lock up
your rear wheels and make your car fish–tail.
At higher speeds, downshift first to a slower speed, then use the parking brake to stop. Successively
downshift to lower gears, letting in the clutch slowly with each downshift until you are in first gear,
then use the parking brake. Some automatic transmissions allow you to manually downshift. When
coming to a stop with your parking brake, put the transmission in neutral. Note: if pumping the
brake in the previous step gives you sufficient braking power, there's no need for using the parking
brake. Downshifting combined with brake pumping is

Uses And Techniques Of A Brake
INTRODUCTION
A brake is a mechanical gadget which represses movement, moderating or ceasing a moving
question or keeping its movement. Most generally brakes use contact between two surfaces
squeezed together to change over the dynamic energy of the moving object into warmth, however
different techniques for vitality transformation may be utilized. For example regenerative braking
changes over a great part of the vitality to electrical vitality, which may be put away for later utilize.
Different techniques change over dynamic vitality into potential vitality in such put away structures
as pressurized air or pressurized oil. Vortex current brakes use attractive fields to change over
dynamic vitality into electric current in the brake circle, balance, or rail, which is changed over into
warmth. Still other braking strategies even change active vitality into diverse structures, for instance
by exchanging the vitality to a pivoting flywheel.
COMPONENTS:
DRUM BREAKS:
For drum brakes they use special iron and this iron should be heat conductive. This work while rear
wheels of vehicle rotate. Drum brakes can only applies in rear wheels of vehicles. Drum brakes
helpful for making friction and when driver applies brakes then friction work. This friction helpful
for slow down the wheel. This brake system has one problem that it produces too much heat in the
friction area. Some drum brakes system use 2 wheel cylinders and each cylinder has one piston. In
both cylinders they

chicken goes about its business completely oblivious, safely making it to the other side of the road.
Heart pounding, you carry on with your drive, shaking your head at the close call and the chicken's

The final part of the braking system is one that is easy to overlook, a lot of people don't associate
with braking at all. The tires. Tires are, as a major brand's advertisment says, "the only safety feature
on the road that actually touches the road." Stopping the brake rotors, and thus the wheels and tires
does little good, and is usually of some detriment if trying to make a controlled stop. This is because
when the tires stop moving, or "lock up" their grip on the road changes because the static friction
between the tire and the road changed to dynamic friction. The easiest way to imagine this is if you
were trying to push a heavy box across the floor. While the box is stationary there is static friction
between itself and the floor, once it starts to move it becomes dynamic friction. You might have
noticed before if you have ever tried to slide something heavy that it takes more effort to get the
object to move initially, than it does to keep it moving. This is because static friction takes more
force to overcome than dynamic friction. Similarly, once the tires are sliding on the road, there is
less friction, and thus a reduction in braking force relative to the vehicle and the road, not to mention
the possibility of spinning out of control. The tires gripping the road is what actually slows the
vehicle down and brings it to a controlled

The initial, a parallel hydraulic powered mixture, basically unites the cross breed segments to a
traditional transmission and driveshaft. While this permits the framework to help the fuel motor in
speeding up (when the gas motor is working its hardest), it doesn't permit the gas motor to close off
when the vehicle isn't in movement. That implies the vehicle is continually smoldering gas (not at
all like gas/electric half and halves, which have motors that close off at moderate paces or amid a
stop). This is the principle disservice, when straightforwardly contrasted and the gas/electric half

ABSTRACT This paper will identify some prerequisites for brake actuation circuit design,
describe three basic types of brake actuation circuitry, and will point out some common problems to
be avoided in brake actuation circuit design for off–highway vehicles and equipment. It will deal
only with the actuation of service brakes (as opposed to parking brake). Service brake selection,
pneumatic, and vacuum powered brake systems are beyond the scope of this paper.

The designer needs to know the minimum, nominal, and maximum volume of fluid required.
Different types of actuation operate in different ranges of volumetric displacements.
1
Input Pedal Force Input pedal force is generally expressed as a maximum force allowed to
generate the desired maximum brake line pressure. Again, there are governing agencies that make
recommendations to assist in identifying this value. BRAKE ACTUATION CIRCUITS The system
designer can accomplish brake actuation in different ways. The use of a direct means of actuation,
such as hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes is but one method of brake actuation. Another type of
actuation is reverse modulation or negative braking as it is referred to in the European community.
Reverse modulation uses hydraulic pressure to release a spring apply brake. Maximum torque is
produced when hydraulic pressure is absent either intentionally or due to system failure. The subject
of reverse modulation requires further detailed explanation beyond the scope fo this paper. Also
beyond the scope of this paper are pneumatic and vacuum boosted hydraulic circuits as it is felt that
the trend is clearly away from them toward full hydraulic circuits. This paper will discuss three
broad categories of hydraulic pressure actuation circuits, these are:
cylinder bore closing off the compensating port, see Figure 1 (E). This completely seals the
hydraulic system.

Oil Change Essay
How to Get a Good Oil Change
People need to understand how to get a good oil change. Many car owners believe that this is a
simple service. They also think that anybody can do it. Although these statements contain a few
glimmers of truth, it's not as easy as it sounds. Yes it's a simple service on some automobiles.
However, on some cars and trucks the maintenance procedure becomes more complicated. Auto
repair shops might have to remove belly pans and stone guards to gain access to the drain plug and
filter. In some cases the oil filter is located over the top of electrical components like alternators or
starter motors. In this situation you don't want oil to drip on these electrical devices. Sidebar: a good
mechanical sees this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regular maintenance remains necessary to keep the engine clean inside. Use of high quality filters
and the correct viscosity of oil becomes another critical component of the oil change. This also
becomes one of the rare opportunities that a professional gets to look over the vehicle. Any
outstanding maintenance or safety problems can be discovered during the short time the automobile
is in the shop. A consumer needs to understand what the shop includes in a lube oil and filter
maintenance service. Then they need to make sure they get what they paid for.
Things Included in a Good Oil Change
A good oil change includes checking all the tire pressure including the spare tire. Car makers hide
the space saver spare away to maximize cargo space and reduce weight. When something is out of
sight it's often out of mind of both the driver and the mechanic. A flat tire from debris on the road
remains a common occurrence.
Digging out the space saver spare and discovering that there's no air in it or that it's low is an
aggravating experience. Therefore, a good oil change service will include properly inflating the
spare tire. Many people don't realize, because of its small size, that a space saver spare has twice the
pressure of a regular tire. This means that 60 to 70 psi inflation is necessary for the spare to operate
correctly.
The higher the pressure the more likely a slow bleed down occurs. A really conscientious mechanic
will go one step further and make

Introduction
A brake is a mechanical gadget which hinders movement, abating or halting a moving vehicle or
keeping its movement.
Most brakes ordinarily utilize rubbing between two surfaces squeezed together to change over the
dynamic vitality of the moving vehicle into heat, however different routines for vitality
transformation may be utilized. For instance regenerative braking changes over a great part of the
vitality toelectrical vitality, which may be put away for later

Invention of the Automobile Essay
Invention of the Automobile
In the beginning, man's only form of transportation was his own feet. Later, to comfort his journey
on foot, was the invention of footwear. Through envy of the speed of other animals he would learn
to tame these animals. People who live in the desert ride atop camels. The people who live in the
frigid climates travel by dogs. Some people from places like India ride elephants. But the must
widely used form of transportation by animal power was by horse. Man would soon develop boats
and ships to travel long distances over water and time would flow like the rivers and hundreds of
years later, in the late 1700s steam power became the new craze. Steam power got the wheels
turning amongst many inventors who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interesting to note is that the only invention he made was a two–cycle internal combustion engine.
The automobile today has items that are critical to have. If a major car company were to produce a
car powered only by Lenoir's engine it would never sell because of the essentials.
THE ESSENTIALS The essentials are the necessary parts for an automobile to be an automobile in
today's world. If someone were to build an automobile like that of Lenoir's today it would be
nothing more than a go–kart. No one would call it an automobile. Automobiles need certain things
other than just an engine and a horse carriage to be considered an automobile today for two reasons.
One reason is so someone will actually buy it and another is because it's the item is required by law.
In 1861 a German engineer named Nikolaus August Otto built his first gasoline–powered engine.
Three years later he would team up with Eugen Langen to form the Deutz Gas Engine Factory.
Otto's engine was based on the same principles of Lenoir's. It was also a two–stroke engine with one
cylinder but it used the different type of fuel, gasoline rather than coal gas. Otto and Langen learned
of a way to gain more efficiency by compressing the gas before combustion in 1867. This led them
to production of the first four–stroke

Anti Lock Braking System
Chapter Four ABS Training
4.1 What is ABS?
Anti–Lock Brake System (ABS) is a combination of vehicle hardware and software that work
together to maintain steering control and vehicle stability during hard braking. Initially developed as
a special option for topof–the–line models, today's ABS units are compact, easy to service,
inexpensive and widely available. Now every major automotive manufacturer offers some form of
ABS vehicle control that provides safe, maximum braking under all weather conditions and road
surfaces.

The ABS components include wheel speed sensors, an electronic control module, and a hydraulic
modulator assembly that includes electrically–operated solenoid valves.
THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM
Everything starts with the wheel speed sensors. Wheel sensors consist of a magnetic pickup and a
toothed sensor ring or a slotted collar. In some applications, the sensor is an integral part of the
wheel bearing and hub assembly. In others, the sensor ring(s) may be mounted on the axle hub
behind the brake rotor, on the brake rotor itself, inside the brake drum, on the transmission
YOU CAN DO IT!
Many repair technicians are turning away ABS equipped vehicles because they perceive these
systems as too complex, too tough to diagnose, or requiring special tools and repair skills. What
these technicians don't realize is that the same brake components they've worked on for years still do
the job of stopping the vehicle. It's simply the addition of the ABS unit and its components that
make the system special. Service technicians had the same reaction when ECM controlled vehicles
first appeared. What we quickly learned was that 80% of the driveability problems were still engine
related. The same will hold true for ABS systems. Proper training to recognize and understand the
differences between ABS systems and how they function will be necessary, and some special test
equipment and

Automobiles Then and Now Essay
Automobiles Then and Now
The automobile has become an important part in our nations economy. In fact such an important part
that is has called for many changes through out its history. One of the main changes is the body. In
the 1950's the body was made mostly of steel. This was okay if you like bulky, heavy, gas guzzling
cars. The main reason why steel was so widely used is that the steel industry was so huge and steel
was so cheep that it was the logical thing to use. However with all the advances in plastics it did not
make sense to use steel when a lighter more durable substitute became readily available and much
cheaper. Steel is still used though today because of its strength and protection to the passengers.

In the 1950's the automobile hade drum brakes all the way around. The problem with drum brakes
was that they heated up easily and by heating up that would cause failure to the brakes, (Coates Del,
Brake System 1). Drum brakes would mostly heat up when traveling down hill, as one would have
to apply the brake often and there being no ventilation it was a accident waiting to happen. Most
drum brakes where mechanically actuated (Coates, Brake systems 2). This means that the brakes
where actuated by a cable and caused them to lock up very easily. The hydraulic brake was
introduced in the 1950's (Coates Brakes Systems 3). This new braking system used fluid to apply
pressure and greatly reduced lock up. Disc Brakes have become the premiere stopping system on
cars today. Disc brakes do not trap water as drum brakes tend to do which causes them to slip and
fail. Disc brakes also allow more surface area to accept pressure from the brake pads making
stopping faster. In addition to disc brakes ABS (Anti–lock Braking System) was introduced on
motor vehicles in the United States as a safety feature (Coates ABS Brake Systems). ABS brake
system uses wheel speed sensors, a computer and a modulator unit to prevent loss of tire adhesion
during braking. ABS is now available on over 90 percent of all new vehicles. The ABS brake system
does not operate when you apply the brake unless one ore

Speech 251 has built my communication skills up to the point where I can clearly communicate,
with my team members, while conducting hydraulic tests. As the year is coming to an end,
Hydraulics is experiencing another slow period. As work slows down, I continue to educate myself
by reading step processes in technical manuals and by studying drawings to continue my growth in
aspects that pertain to my job. Moreover, as a second–year apprentice, communication has proven to
be one of the most valuable skills, both written and verbal. Speech 251 has lent me a hand. Dr.
Halbert's persistence in the value of public speaking has been beneficial in establishing
communication skills. In example, we regularly hold board meetings where job statuses and injury
reports are discussed with upper management. Having the confidence to speak professionally, in a

I. LANDING GEAR SAFETY DEVICES
Most airplanes with a retractable landing gear have a gear warning horn that will sound when the
airplane is configured for landing and the landing gear is not down and locked. Normally, the horn is
linked to the throttle or flap position, and/or the airspeed indicator so that when the airplane is below
a certain airspeed, configuration, or power setting with the gear retracted, the warning horn will
sound. Accidental retraction of a landing gear may be prevented by such devices as mechanical
downlocks, safety switches, and ground locks. Mechanical downlocks are built–in components of a
gear retraction system and are operated automatically by the gear retraction system. To prevent
accidental operation of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What happens is that atomic hydrogen found in such substances interacts chemically with the high
tensile steel in the gear, causing the affected areas to transform chemically into a brittle alloy with a
risk of fracturing. "The only way to counteract hydrogen embrittlement is to remove the affected
component and bake it in a special oven at 375 F for 23 hours," Lind tells AMT. "This allows the
hydrogen atoms to migrate to the surface and then escape."
Maintenance best practices
When damaged aircraft landing gear comes into the shop, it costs more to overhaul than landing
gear that has been maintained properly. Here is what you can do to keep your landing gear costs
down. The first step is lubrication. It may sound simple, but insufficient lubrication during regular
usage causes unnecessary wear–and–tear in many of the system's components. "Lubrication is
critical to the movement of all articulated parts and joints of landing gear," says Lind. "Proper
lubrication ensures smooth functioning, less friction and wear, and the appropriate transfer of forces
throughout the gear during use. Lubrication is key to keeping out water, de–icing fluid, and other
corrosion–causing substances. Make no mistake; corrosion is a real problem for landing gear."
Before you lubricate, be sure to check the aircraft's manual to find out what substances you can and
cannot use. "In some cases, using the

The increasing demand of CMC material in Aerospace Industry [5] MANUFACTURING
PROCESS: There are many different processes and techniques used to manufacture CMC. Some
common processes are as follow:– COLD PRESSING AND SINTERING The method of cold press
sintering is similar in making monolithic ceramics. The process is done by adding the ceramic
matrix powder with water to create slurry. An organic binder is added to the slurry to hold the
compound together. The adhesive is burnt off during the sintering process. The composite whiskers
are place into the mix where the compound is pressed under high pressure. Sintering is a process of
heating the material below its melting point where the compound is held in place by self–adhesion.
In sintering the matrix is subject to shrinkage that could result in cracking. Altering the sintering
temperature and ensuring compatibility between thermal expansion of matrix and composite
materials can avoid cracking. [6] LIQUID SILICON INFILTRATION (LSI) LSI is a fast, low cost
method of forming C/C–SiC. This process involves driving liquid silicon into a porous Carbon–

Rudi Volti 's Cars And Culture
Marilynn Bach
STS.001 Technology in American History
Professor Merritt Roe Smith
17 March 2015 Rudi Volti's Cars and Culture: The Life Story of a Technology (Greenwood Press,
2004) examines the evolution of the automobile, starting from 1765, with Nicholas Cugnot's steam–
powered vehicles, to the present day. The goal of the book, as stated by Volti in the introduction, is
to "pay particular attention to the automobile's technical evolution while at the same time
delineating the cultural, social, and political context in which that evolution has taken place" (xi).
Thus, Volti also demonstrates the cultural and societal effects that resulted from the emergence and
mass production of automobiles. Volti divides the history of automobiles into seven time periods,
each a separate chapter that achieves his goal. He accomplishes his objectives by stating the
technological advances and societal context under different headings, occasionally linking the two
topics together. Drawing from mostly secondary sources, Volti brings together different
interpretations of the historians before him and presents his perceptions in a way that seems very
factual. For example, he often spoke of the relationship between automobiles and women; in chapter
three, he states that "the automobile thus served as a key artifact in . . . women's liberation" (62),
making his judgment seem much more unbiased than it really was. In addition, he uses statistics and
data from secondary sources; the only two

Advantages Of Brakes

  • 1. Advantages Of Brakes CHAPTER–1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 INTRODUCTION TO BRAKES Brakes are mechanical devices that increase the frictional resistance that retards the turning motion that is supplied to the wheels of the vehicle. In a vacuum assisted hydraulic brake system, a constant vacuum is kept maintained in the brake booster using the engine. When the brake pedal is pushed down, a poppet valve opens and air pushes/rushes into the pressure chamber on the driver's side of the booster. In a vacuum braking system, vacuum is used for the application of brakes. Braking the train is a very complex process, particularly to rail vehicles and is of great importance because of essential contribution on the safety of the moving vehicle. This complexity comes into picture from the fact, that during braking process various phenomena occurs, of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... it should be same as in the brake pipe, during brake release but that the connection to the brake pipe is closed during a brake application. It is important to close the connection as soon as the brake pipe vacuum is reduced so that a difference in pressure is created between the upper and lower sides of the brake cylinder piston. 1.4 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VACUUM BRAKES: ADVANTAGES: 1. It provides partial release, which the air brake could not. 2. It consists of accelerator valves which help to speed up the operation on each vehicle. 3. It consists of two pipe system, in which one is brake pipe and the second was provided to give an additional supply to speed up the brake release. 4. It consists of an equalizing reservoir which helps to set the brake to the right level. 5. Door operation , whistles, warning horns, etc. can be operated using the vacuum supply. 6. It is simple in design. DISADVANTAGES:– 1. It takes longer time to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Report On Rocket Sled Catchment Arresting Systems Written Report Concerning Rocket Sled Catchment Arresting Systems QinetiQ, a defence technology company headquartered in Farnborough, have a problem regarding their Pendine long test track facility located in South Wales. The test track is 1500m long and test items are powered down the track on sleds pushed by rocket motors. QinetiQ are finding a variety of engineering challenges in containing the rocket motor sleds in relatively short distances at the end of the track on high velocity trials (600m/s – 700m/s). There is often significant damage caused to the capture systems used on such trials and the damage caused to them mean that they cannot be reused. Contents 1. Introduction 1.1. Brief 1.2. • 8. Advantage And Disadvantage Of Pneumatics Introduction The technology of Pneumatics deals with the application and uses of a compressible gas such as air or a suitable pure gas but hydraulics uses an incompressible liquid such as oil. The application started to grow due to a gradual shift towards automated machines and equipment. The introduction of pneumatics in manufacturing has introduced the cheaper mode of production in wide areas of application such as Packaging machinery, Bottle filling Industry, artificial heart, logic control systems and robotic materials handling devices etc. Due to several advantages, pneumatics is preferred over hydraulics. The coming future technology in this field is further improving the hydraulics in terms of cost and energy efficiency. The early application ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first compressors were seen around 3000 B.C. to provide small blows of air to aid in starting fire. In around 1500 B.C, these simple devices were evolved into larger units and used in metal smelting. Around the 18th century, mechanical compressors were used to do useful work, any many experiments were done to test the power and applicability of pneumatic systems. Pneumatics was used to power a tunneling project in Mt. Cenis, located in the Alps. If traditional drilling methods were used (manual) the project would have taken around 30 long years. By using pneumatic drills, the tunnel was completed in just 14 years and was open to traffic in 1871. This project caught the attention of many government agencies and they began to talk of compressor stations for city–wide power consumption. (6) Paris was actually the first city to try pneumatics in 1888 when a 65 horsepower (HP) rated compressor fed 4 miles of main wire with 30 miles of branch circuits delivering 90 psi. By 1891 the capacity of the motor was increased to 25,000 HP. Electricity would become the most convenient on large–scale energy transmission while pneumatics were used in more industrial applications including power, process, and control ... • 12. Science Fair Project Report This year, for my Science Fair Project I plan to do a study on how varying system parameters affect the dynamics of a multi–tank liquid–level hydraulic system. The purpose of this type of system is to maintain a constant fluid flow. In order to maintain this fluid flow the tanks have to preserve a certain liquid level, this necessary level depends on the other variables. My system will consist of: an inflow valve, the tanks, valves to go between the tanks, and an outflow valve. I want to do this experiment because about two years ago, when I was in the seventh grade, I did a science fair experiment where I tested how changing the variables in a mass–spring–damper system affected system response. In that experiment, I changed the amount of mass, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Coupler Buffers and chain coupler (also called buffers and screw, screw coupler, or English coupler) is the standard train coupling system used in Europe, outside the former Soviet Union. It is also occasionally used outside Europe. The vehicles are coupled by hand using a hook and links with a turnbuckle that draws the vehicles together. In Britain, this is called ascrew coupling. Vehicles have buffers, one at each corner on the ends, which are pulled together and compressed by the coupling device. This arrangement limits the slack in trains and lessens shunting shocks. By contrast, the semi–automatic Janney coupler usually requires comparatively jarring encounters in order to engage the coupling fully. The earliest buffers were fixed extensions of the wagon frames, but later spring buffers were introduced. Inefficient and slow, the European system is also relatively unsafe because – like the link–and–pin coupling used in North America (and especially the United States) before the end of the 19th century, when the Janney ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These couplings followed earlier tramway practice but were made more regular. This coupling is still the standard in European countries (except the former Soviet Union, where the SA–3 automatic coupler is used). Coupling is done by a worker who must climb between the cars. First he winds the turnbuckle to the loose position, and then he can hang the chain on the hook. After hanging the chain on the towing hook the turnbuckle handle is stowed on the idle hook to prevent damage to itself, the vehicle, or the brake pipes. Only shunting is permitted with a dangling chain. Disconnected brake pipes must be stowed on dummy connectors, to allow proper operation of the brakes. A telescopic hydraulic crane has a boom that consists of a number of tubes fitted one inside the other. A hydraulic or other powered mechanism extends or retracts the tubes to increase or decrease the total length of the boom. It uses one or more simple machines to create mechanical advantage and thus moves loads beyond the normal capability of human. These types of booms are often used for short term construction projects rescue jobs, lifting boats in and out of the water, etc. The relative compactness of telescopic booms makes them adaptable for many mobile applications. Boom play objective role in the load lifting operation and the maximum direct effect of the stress is initializing from it and effects to another attached assemblies of crane. Sometimes this crane is truck mounted to travel on highway and eliminating the need of the special transportation for crane. The telescopic boom is composed of a series of rectangular shaped symmetrically cross–sectional segments which are fitted with one inside the other. The boom base section is the largest segment while the boom tip section is the smallest. In between there are six sections exist in the telescopic crane boom. There are different types of Telescopic booms which may be pinned boom, full powered boom, or a combination of both pinned boom and full powered boom. For the air compressor we may log more frequently, for example every five seconds, if we find that the compressor is switching mode very frequently, otherwise logging at 60–second intervals may be enough. The purpose of the continuous measurement will also affect the logging interval. If the first visit gives us the impression that the compressed air system is an important part of the energy use, we may measure more carefully to have enough information to suggest detailed measures. All About the Brake-Assist System Essay The Brake Assisted System The purpose of the brake assisted system The purpose of the brake assisted system is assist when the user applies force to the brake pedal that is not sufficient enough to stop the vehicle. Based on the speed and force to which the brake pedal is pressed, the brake assisted system will detect if an emergency is taking place or could have taken place. The brake assist system increases the brake pressure until the ABS regulation intervenes to prevent the wheels from locking. This way the greatest possible braking effect can be achieved and the brake path can be shortened significantly. There are two types of brake assist system which are as follows: 1. How much actually exert in the brake when using manual braking system? If we were to take a look at a situation where the piston in the master cylinder is pushes 40mm with 10N force. It is understood that the slave piston will then move 10mm with a force of 40N. Now, that force can be further increased by inserting a lever connected between piston, pedal and pivot point. Note that, if the distance from the pedal to the pivot is 3 times the distance from the pivot to the connected piston, then it multiplies the pedal force by a factor of 3, as the user is pushing down on the pedal. In case of a user who pushes pedal 120mm down with 10N force, 30N force will be applied to the master piston and slave piston move the brake pad by 10mm of a force of 120N. 3. We also like comparing cars side by side, lining up the specs: horse power, torque ratios, top speed, and especially 0–60 times. One spec, just as important as the rest that is often overlooked is 60 – 0 times, or stopping times. But the fact is that cars must stop. Many of today's cars do that function using something called Antilock Braking or ABS. ABS uses sensors to monitor the wheel speed in order to determine if a wheel, or multiple wheels, are about to lock up. If the sensors determine this is happening, a series of hydraulic valves limit or reduce the braking on that or those wheels. ABS works on all four tires. Most generally brakes use contact between two surfaces squeezed together to change over the dynamic energy of the moving object into warmth, however different techniques for vitality transformation may be utilized. For example regenerative braking changes over a great part of the vitality to electrical vitality, which may be put away for later utilize. Different techniques change over dynamic vitality into potential vitality in such put away structures as pressurized air or pressurized oil. Vortex current brakes use attractive fields to change over dynamic vitality into electric current in the brake circle, balance, or rail, which is changed over into warmth. Still other braking strategies even change active vitality into diverse structures, for instance by exchanging the vitality to a pivoting flywheel. COMPONENTS: DRUM BREAKS: For drum brakes they use special iron and this iron should be heat conductive. This work while rear wheels of vehicle rotate. Drum brakes can only applies in rear wheels of vehicles. Drum brakes helpful for making friction and when driver applies brakes then friction work. This friction helpful for slow down the wheel. The final part of the braking system is one that is easy to overlook, a lot of people don't associate with braking at all. The tires. Tires are, as a major brand's advertisment says, "the only safety feature on the road that actually touches the road." Stopping the brake rotors, and thus the wheels and tires does little good, and is usually of some detriment if trying to make a controlled stop. This is because when the tires stop moving, or "lock up" their grip on the road changes because the static friction between the tire and the road changed to dynamic friction. The easiest way to imagine this is if you were trying to push a heavy box across the floor. While the box is stationary there is static friction between itself and the floor, once it starts to move it becomes dynamic friction. You might have noticed before if you have ever tried to slide something heavy that it takes more effort to get the object to move initially, than it does to keep it moving. This is because static friction takes more force to overcome than dynamic friction. Similarly, once the tires are sliding on the road, there is less friction, and thus a reduction in braking force relative to the vehicle and the road, not to mention the possibility of spinning out of control. The tires gripping the road is what actually slows the vehicle down and brings it to a controlled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The use of a direct means of actuation, such as hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes is but one method of brake actuation. Another type of actuation is reverse modulation or negative braking as it is referred to in the European community. Reverse modulation uses hydraulic pressure to release a spring apply brake. Maximum torque is produced when hydraulic pressure is absent either intentionally or due to system failure. They also think that anybody can do it. Although these statements contain a few glimmers of truth, it's not as easy as it sounds. Yes it's a simple service on some automobiles. However, on some cars and trucks the maintenance procedure becomes more complicated. Auto repair shops might have to remove belly pans and stone guards to gain access to the drain plug and filter. Use of high quality filters and the correct viscosity of oil becomes another critical component of the oil change. This also becomes one of the rare opportunities that a professional gets to look over the vehicle. A consumer needs to understand what the shop includes in a lube oil and filter maintenance service. Then they need to make sure they get what they paid for. Things Included in a Good Oil Change A good oil change includes checking all the tire pressure including the spare tire. Car makers hide the space saver spare away to maximize cargo space and reduce weight. When something is out of sight it's often out of mind of both the driver and the mechanic. A flat tire from debris on the road remains a common occurrence. Digging out the space saver spare and discovering that there's no air in it or that it's low is an aggravating experience. Therefore, a good oil change service will include properly inflating the spare tire. Many people don't realize, because of its small size, that a space saver spare has twice the pressure of a regular tire. This means that 60 to 70 psi inflation is necessary for the spare to operate correctly. The higher the pressure the more likely a slow bleed down occurs. • 59. Anti Lock Braking System Chapter Four ABS Training 4.1 What is ABS? Anti–Lock Brake System (ABS) is a combination of vehicle hardware and software that work together to maintain steering control and vehicle stability during hard braking. Initially developed as a special option for topof–the–line models, today's ABS units are compact, easy to service, inexpensive and widely available. Now every major automotive manufacturer offers some form of ABS vehicle control that provides safe, maximum braking under all weather conditions and road surfaces. "FULL" Fig. 1 Integral. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ABS components include wheel speed sensors, an electronic control module, and a hydraulic modulator assembly that includes electrically–operated solenoid valves. THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM Everything starts with the wheel speed sensors. Wheel sensors consist of a magnetic pickup and a toothed sensor ring or a slotted collar. In some applications, the sensor is an integral part of the wheel bearing and hub assembly. In others, the sensor ring(s) may be mounted on the axle hub behind the brake rotor, on the brake rotor itself, inside the brake drum, on the transmission YOU CAN DO IT! Many repair technicians are turning away ABS equipped vehicles because they perceive these systems as too complex, too tough to diagnose, or requiring special tools and repair skills. What these technicians don't realize is that the same brake components they've worked on for years still do the job of stopping the vehicle. It's simply the addition of the ABS unit and its components that make the system special. Service technicians had the same reaction when ECM controlled vehicles first appeared. What we quickly learned was that 80% of the driveability problems were still engine related. The same will hold true for ABS systems. Proper training to recognize and understand the differences between ABS systems and how they function will be necessary, and some special test equipment and

  • 68. Automobiles Then and Now Essay Automobiles Then and Now The automobile has become an important part in our nations economy. In fact such an important part that is has called for many changes through out its history. One of the main changes is the body. In the 1950's the body was made mostly of steel. This was okay if you like bulky, heavy, gas guzzling cars. The main reason why steel was so widely used is that the steel industry was so huge and steel was so cheep that it was the logical thing to use. However with all the advances in plastics it did not make sense to use steel when a lighter more durable substitute became readily available and much cheaper. Steel is still used though today because of its strength and protection to the passengers. Changes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1950's the automobile hade drum brakes all the way around. The problem with drum brakes was that they heated up easily and by heating up that would cause failure to the brakes, (Coates Del, Brake System 1). Drum brakes would mostly heat up when traveling down hill, as one would have to apply the brake often and there being no ventilation it was a accident waiting to happen. Most drum brakes where mechanically actuated (Coates, Brake systems 2). This means that the brakes where actuated by a cable and caused them to lock up very easily. The hydraulic brake was introduced in the 1950's (Coates Brakes Systems 3). This new braking system used fluid to apply pressure and greatly reduced lock up. Disc Brakes have become the premiere stopping system on cars today. Disc brakes do not trap water as drum brakes tend to do which causes them to slip and fail. Disc brakes also allow more surface area to accept pressure from the brake pads making stopping faster. In addition to disc brakes ABS (Anti–lock Braking System) was introduced on motor vehicles in the United States as a safety feature (Coates ABS Brake Systems). ABS brake system uses wheel speed sensors, a computer and a modulator unit to prevent loss of tire adhesion during braking. ABS is now available on over 90 percent of all new vehicles. The ABS brake system does not operate when you apply the brake unless one ore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a member of the Hydraulics Team, I learned what it is like to handle some of the largest Hydraulic components in existence. I am specially trained to disassemble, clean, rebuild, and test hydraulic components according to required specifications. Speech 251 has built my communication skills up to the point where I can clearly communicate, with my team members, while conducting hydraulic tests. As the year is coming to an end, Hydraulics is experiencing another slow period. As work slows down, I continue to educate myself by reading step processes in technical manuals and by studying drawings to continue my growth in aspects that pertain to my job. Moreover, as a second–year apprentice, communication has proven to be one of the most valuable skills, both written and verbal. Speech 251 has lent me a hand. Dr. Halbert's persistence in the value of public speaking has been beneficial in establishing communication skills. In example, we regularly hold board meetings where job statuses and injury reports are discussed with upper management. Having the confidence to speak professionally, in a public setting, helps the production move on schedule. Being able to update those, who manage the projects, allows future planning to flow accordingly. In my opinion, a sense of pride can be seen in my work. • 72. Aircraft Hydraulic Systems I. LANDING GEAR SAFETY DEVICES Most airplanes with a retractable landing gear have a gear warning horn that will sound when the airplane is configured for landing and the landing gear is not down and locked. Normally, the horn is linked to the throttle or flap position, and/or the airspeed indicator so that when the airplane is below a certain airspeed, configuration, or power setting with the gear retracted, the warning horn will sound. Accidental retraction of a landing gear may be prevented by such devices as mechanical downlocks, safety switches, and ground locks. Mechanical downlocks are built–in components of a gear retraction system and are operated automatically by the gear retraction system. To prevent accidental operation of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What happens is that atomic hydrogen found in such substances interacts chemically with the high tensile steel in the gear, causing the affected areas to transform chemically into a brittle alloy with a risk of fracturing. "The only way to counteract hydrogen embrittlement is to remove the affected component and bake it in a special oven at 375 F for 23 hours," Lind tells AMT. "This allows the hydrogen atoms to migrate to the surface and then escape." Maintenance best practices When damaged aircraft landing gear comes into the shop, it costs more to overhaul than landing gear that has been maintained properly. Here is what you can do to keep your landing gear costs down. The first step is lubrication. It may sound simple, but insufficient lubrication during regular usage causes unnecessary wear–and–tear in many of the system's components. "Lubrication is critical to the movement of all articulated parts and joints of landing gear," says Lind. "Proper lubrication ensures smooth functioning, less friction and wear, and the appropriate transfer of forces throughout the gear during use. Lubrication is key to keeping out water, de–icing fluid, and other corrosion–causing substances. Make no mistake; corrosion is a real problem for landing gear." Before you lubricate, be sure to check the aircraft's manual to find out what substances you can and cannot use. "In some cases, using the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The increasing demand of CMC material in Aerospace Industry [5] MANUFACTURING PROCESS: There are many different processes and techniques used to manufacture CMC. Some common processes are as follow:– COLD PRESSING AND SINTERING The method of cold press sintering is similar in making monolithic ceramics. The process is done by adding the ceramic matrix powder with water to create slurry. An organic binder is added to the slurry to hold the compound together. The adhesive is burnt off during the sintering process. The composite whiskers are place into the mix where the compound is pressed under high pressure. Sintering is a process of heating the material below its melting point where the compound is held in place by self–adhesion. In sintering the matrix is subject to shrinkage that could result in cracking. Altering the sintering temperature and ensuring compatibility between thermal expansion of matrix and composite materials can avoid cracking. [6] LIQUID SILICON INFILTRATION (LSI) LSI is a fast, low cost method of forming C/C–SiC. This process involves driving liquid silicon into a porous Carbon– Carbon preform. Rudi Volti 's Cars And Culture Marilynn Bach STS.001 Technology in American History Professor Merritt Roe Smith 17 March 2015 Rudi Volti's Cars and Culture: The Life Story of a Technology (Greenwood Press, 2004) examines the evolution of the automobile, starting from 1765, with Nicholas Cugnot's steam– powered vehicles, to the present day. The goal of the book, as stated by Volti in the introduction, is to "pay particular attention to the automobile's technical evolution while at the same time delineating the cultural, social, and political context in which that evolution has taken place" (xi). Thus, Volti also demonstrates the cultural and societal effects that resulted from the emergence and mass production of automobiles. Volti divides the history of automobiles into seven time periods, each a separate chapter that achieves his goal. He accomplishes his objectives by stating the technological advances and societal context under different headings, occasionally linking the two topics together. Drawing from mostly secondary sources, Volti brings together different interpretations of the historians before him and presents his perceptions in a way that seems very factual. For example, he often spoke of the relationship between automobiles and women; in chapter three, he states that "the automobile thus served as a key artifact in . . . women's liberation" (62), making his judgment seem much more unbiased than it really was. In addition, he uses statistics and data from secondary sources; the only two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
