CLIL Project: Healthy Diet.
Areas involved:
English – Natural Sciences.
School context:
School: Santo Tomas Bilingual Preschool.
Group: Kinder 4: 25 students (10 girls and 15 boys). Age: 4 years old.
Frequency of classes: Two sixty minutes classes a week.
Estimated length of the project: five to six lessons.
Aims:
* To review and learn vocabulary connected to food and drink.
* To study about healthy habits.
* To learn about the differences between junk food and healthy food.
*To cook a healthy snack.
Content:
Videos, songs, and flashcards.
Language:
Lexis: Fruits (apple, banana, orange, pear, plum, strawberry); vegetables (broccoli, carrot,
tomato, lettuce); junk food (pizza, cake, hot dog, hamburger, chips, french-fries, donut,
pancake, ice cream, candy, chocolate); healthy meals (spaghetti, soup, salad, fish, chicken
and rice); drinks (water, milk, chocolate milk, fresh fruit juice).
Grammar: -Do you like…? -Yes, I do/ No I don't.
-Which food is healthy?
Functions: Students talking about their favorite meals, answering questions about healthy
and junk food, and healthy drinks.
Macroskills: Listening and Speaking.

Preparation: prepare one copy of a worksheet for each student.
Procedure:
1. Inquire students for the meaning of healthy food, and prompt them to discuss about
the importance of eating it. Other questions will be asked as well:
-What is healthy food?
-What is junk food?
-Is junk food good for your body?
-Can drinks be healthy food?
2. Show students the videos ‘Do you like broccoli ice cream?’ and ‘Do you like spaghetti
yogurt?’ so as to introduce them to new vocabulary and to the structures ‘Do you like?’
‘Yes, I do/ No, I don’t’.
3. Show students flashcards of different food and drink items, and ask them which are
healthy and which are not.
4. Show students a food oval, and explain to them what is it and why is it important to
incorporate those different types of food in our diet.

5. Give out the worksheet to students, and ask them to draw a healthy meal and a healthy
drink.

Follow-up:
Divide the class in five groups of five members. Assign to each group different healthy
recipes which must cook at their homes. On the next class, each group will bring the
different meals so as to share them with the rest of the classmates.
RECIPES:
Fruit salad: 2 red apples, 2 bananas, 2 pears, squeezed orange juice.
Sandwich: 2 slices of white/brown bread, a slice of cheese, a slice of ham, a slice of
tomato.
Banana sticks: use only half of a banana, put a stick on it, and daub the fruit with a little
dulce de leche and spread some corn flakes on it.
Toast: toast white/brown slices of bread and spread them with light dulce de leche or with
white cheese and jam.
Smoothies: liquefy pieces of banana with skim milk and sweetener/sugar; or some
strawberries, canned pineapple and squeezed orange juice; or canned peach with water
and sweetener/sugar.
