  3. 3. DEFINITION OF MATERIALS • The term ‘materials’ in the context of language learning, is commonly associated with textbooks or course books • Materials encompasses of various teaching/learning aid such CD-Roms, DVD, handouts, charts, websites • ‘Material’ refers to anything that teachers or learners use in teaching and learning the language (Tomlinson, 1998).

DEFINITION OF MATERIALS • Materials can be informative, instructional, experiential & exploratory • Commercially produced materials mostly focus on informing learners about language features & guiding them to practice those features – basically serves as language input • providing explicit teaching and practice of the target language
  5. 5. MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT • Process of producing and/or using materials for language learning that includes the evaluation, adaptation, design, production & research • All these process are crucial to be considered in making language learning materials
  6. 6. TUTORIAL 1 • Find out the number of categories of materials in ELT • List at least 3 examples of each category • Prepare a scrapbook containing pictures of materials used in ELT and provide step- by-step procedures to prepare it
