Psysics Behind Changes in Planetary Orbit
Physics behind changes in planetary orbit
April 07,2014
"Oh no, a small field of asteroid the size of Pluto is heading towards Earth on a direct collision
course!" The Earth and all of its inhabitants are now facing certain extinction. What are the Earth's
inhabitants to do? Is it possible to move the planet out of the way in time? Fortunately for humanity,
there are many ways to actually change the Earth's orbit both plausible and unrealistic, but one must
completely understand the physics behind each option so that no mistakes are made and we fully
avoid suffering any consequences. First background information on our planet needed, Earth has
been around for 4.54 billion years, it has a mass of 5.98x10^24 kg, a diameter of 12756 km, a
velocity of about 67000 mph, and is about 149,597,890 km away from the Sun. To most this doesn't
sound like a simple task, not knowing the trick is using Earth's orbit. An orbit is the gravitationally
curved path of an object around a point in space, for example the path of a planet around the center
of a star system, like in our Solar System (Encyclopedia). In order to change the orbit of a planet,
one must consider the difference forces that can influence the planet's orbit: direct contact,
gravitational assistance, solar sails, and the possible but not exactly plausible forces.
The thought of an object coming on a collision with Earth is quite frightening, but surprisingly it
could lead to our salvation. If an object of equal mass

The Discovery Of The Earth
It is inevitable that the Sun will turn into a red giant and eventually a black hole, thus, killing
everything that is left in our solar system. When this happens, the fate of the human race will either
survive or go extinct. If we as a species intend on surviving, we must develop ways to colonize
interstellar space. However, there is currently many limitations that don't allow humans to travel
vast distances in short periods of time. Since the space race, there have been countless proposed
propulsion solutions; however, with current technology one stands out. This being the solar sail.
Solar sails were proposed by Johannes Kepler nearly 400 years ago. He believed that since Europe
were still using naval exploration as their main means, that we could use sails to explore the galaxy.
Kepler noted that when observing a comet's tail, there was that it was being blown around by solar
breeze. With this theory, Kepler believed that we could use this breeze to propel this sail just like
how wind on Earth propels a ship in the ocean. This theory has been disproven by scientists
however.
A solar sail is a large piece of aluminized, temperature–resistant material known as CP–1. There is
another sail that is composed of aluminum reinforced Mylar. For a solar sail to work, it must have
be reflective. This allows for light particles to bounce off of it, thus, creating a thrust. This would
occur at a gentle rate giving the sail a gradual acceleration. Unlike other interstellar

Green Energy
In the environment there are many concerns on how to make this a better place to live. One of the
biggest issues is our energy and power sources. Green energy is a term used for sources of power
and energy that are environmentally friendly. Basically this includes anything that is renewable
energy. Renewable energy is considered energy that is constantly being replaced such as wood,
vegetable matter, and trash. Green energy 's main focus is to use sources that can cut down on
pollution. Some of these sources of power and energy are Biomass energy, geothermal energy,
hydropower, nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy and tidal energy. People hope that these will
help use more natural sources to produce energy. In several countries you ... Show more content on

Next time you get on your computer you can set up your computer to where the sleep mode is on
and also the hibernate comes on after thirty minutes. Another thing is taking control of the
temperature. During the winter you can set your thermostat at 68 degrees or less during the day and
55 degrees at night before you go to sleep. During the summer you can set it at 78 degrees or more.
Also you can set your thermostat on your water heater between 120 and 130 degrees. The only
drawback with this one is you can take really long hot showers. So with all these information you
can decide if you are for or against green energy. I believe we should start doing something about
our environment before we are too late. I personally am for green energy. You don 't necessarily
have to go out get green energy as your electricity source but doing little can always help our
universe. The good green energy is that there are several sources of energy that we can use and if
using these types of energy help clean up our air pollution and atmosphere I 'm all for

Essay about History of Solar Advancements
History of Solar Advancements
Our sun provides us with a virtually unlimited resource that we have used for centuries in a multiple
of ways. We use it to keep us warm, to grow our food and generate millions if kilowatts of
electricity. Everyday the sun showers the earth with more potential energy that we produce in that
day or even that week. According to the Go Solar Company (1999–2003), "on an acre of land with
the sun overhead is receiving more the four thousand horsepower, which is equivalent to a large
railroad locomotive, and in less than three days of the same intensity will match the estimated total
of all fossil fuels on the earth". Many of the visionaries I will be talking about explored almost all

The architecture used and in many cases was dependant on passive solar heating, which they used in
their, buildings, baths and especially homes. The Greeks were the first to use solar architecture.
"They oriented their houses to make use of the sun during winter, while obscuring its rays during
summer ... entire cities were built this way as early as 400 BC." (Perlin, 2000). The Greek also used
solar radiation in times of war, using reflective mirrors, they would concentrate the sun's energy on
raiding Roman ships, setting their fabric sails up in flame (Solar Energy Sci. 1999).
The Romans were the first to use window glass to efficiently capture the heat derived by passive
solar heating. A glass window allows the sunlight to come in, but traps the heat, much like your car
does when it is parked in the sun. According to John Perlin (2000), passive solar heating was so
important that there were laws passed prohibiting the blocking of someone's solar access.
It wasn't until the 18th century that someone experimented with the heat that accumulates in a glass
enclosed space; tanks filled with water were put inside the box that had a glass lid. The glass lid
propelled the water to reach very high temperatures, that would other wise be impossible. Water has
incredible latent heating potential and this was the basis for the heating system using in the glass–
enclosed box. In 1909 William J. Bailey was able to separate the water heating system with a water

Giant Butterflies Symbolism
Vladimir Kush on his beautiful oil canvas has depicted a three–masted sailing ship heading out to
the open sea on a windy day. The ship is very different than your everyday sailing ship what strike
out most is the giant butterflies that form the sails on the ship; it's as if these butterflies are catching
the heavy wind that is blowing out into the sea. The conditions on the sea look fairly calm but the
sea looks wavy and moving clouds show us the strong wind that is carrying the ship out. People on
the shore are seen holding windsock as an indication to show the strength of the wind. People are
also seen wind surfing across the seashore and there too butterfly wings have taken over the place of
traditional sails.
The beautiful painting is a visual treat to anyone laying eyes on it. The blue sky the wavy water the
sailboats all are ironic to any coastal shore. The moon on the distance is an indication that it's early
dusk or dawn. The sea looks windswept but calm and clear rather than stormy and angry. The ship is
setting out on a long journey but the butterflies are an indication to a positive spin on departure so
it's probably intended for people who have had or will have firsthand experience with departure and
those emotions.
Winged ship is portrayed to bring in a calming and cheering effect. And Kush has used his
imagination to depict the painting; he has used pure imagination in creating winged ship. And a lot
is dependent on the kind of condition that he was born in,

My Interest in a Career at Sea
I have always been interested in the sea, in particularly the merchant navy and have spent a lot of
time on the water. I live near two busy port towns and have always had an interest in the ships
coming and leaving the harbour. When I started looking into future career opportunities, this was
always the career path I wanted to pursue. It is exciting, unique and no two days are the same.
My interest in a career at sea really kicked off after joining the school sailing club, where I achieved
RYA level 1 and 2 in dinghy sailing. Eager to learn more, I joined a sailing club in Chichester
Harbour. I now enjoy social sailing and club racing. At the age of 15 I completed my RYA – Power
Boat Level 2, Safety Boat and First Aid qualifications and at 16 achieved a RYA Dinghy Instructor
qualification to teach on coastal waters.
I was a member of the 5th Chichester Scout group starting from Beavers, to Scouts, working up
through all the ranks. It was a great experience which helped me to build lasting friendships; to get
outdoors and to learn people skills. I spent some memorable times hiking on the South Downs,
learning to plan routes, map reading and working in teams.
As a member of the junior dinghy instructor team at Dell Quay Sailing club, I volunteer my time to
teach sailing and to support the junior race series, either by helming a safety boat or as an assistant
race officer. Each summer, the club runs a junior week where the junior instructors are encouraged
too take the lead.

While boats are a lot of fun, there may be times when a boat owner has had enough, they may
decide that their sail boat is just taking up space and costing them money, yet, they aren't getting
much use out of it. Or perhaps the enjoyment you once got from your sail boat has been replaced by
your desire to take it easy. Sailing can be a rigorous sport. Maybe it's time to turn to a power boat, so
you can sit back and relax, while the engine does all the work. If either of these scenarios sound like

Renewable Energy : Solar Energy
The fossil fuels have been some of the primary sources of energy that we use in the world. There are
some negatives to them like they pollute the air and it would not be renewable. It also has bad
effects on the environment. This is where Alternative energies come into play. These sources are
very efficient. There are multiple of these Alternative energies like Solar, Wind, Geothermal,
Hydroelectricity, etc. These are some energies that will help us be more efficient with our energy
choices. The ones listed are the ones that I will talk about more in depth. The first energy that I will
talk about is Solar energy. Solar energy is from the sun. According to Conserve Energy Source, a
website dedicated about alternative Energy sources, "Solar is the first energy source in the world. It
was in use much earlier before humans even learn how to light a fire. The solar is mostly used in
generating light and heat (Rinkesh)." The sun radiates its heat and comes down upon the earth
producing heat from the sun's rays. This is where PV cells come in. PV cells collect the sun's energy
for you to power stuff in your home. Solar energy has two different types of energy, Active and
Passive solar energy. Active energy is when electrical technology and mechanical technology
convert energy for future use. Passive solar energy uses duration, position and the sun's intensifies it
in a certain place (Rinkesh). Some positives to Solar energies are that, "Solar energy does not create

Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus
In 1492, Christopher Columbus began the voyage that would earn him the name as the most
successful failure in modern history. Columbus began his voyage as a Spanish explorer seeking a
new trade route to the East Indies with two caravels and one flagship. Additionally, Columbus
armed his fleet with eighty–eight crewmen. Columbus arrived at his supposed destination in
approximately three months after he first set sail in Spain. Columbus' arrival on land marked a
monumental stepping stone for European nations, Columbus had discovered the new world. Without
a doubt, Christopher Columbus experienced difficulties on his voyage due to his lack of access to
modern technological tools. Christopher Columbus would have most benefited from better ships,
weather gauging tools, and any form of communication. Therefore, if Christopher Columbus had the
resources available today, perhaps he would have landed in his desired destination and the
decimation of native civilizations may have been prevented. Christopher Columbus crossed the
oceans in three ships that were ill–suited for the voyage across the Atlantic. For example, these
explorers were archaic compared to the technology of new ships of the 20th century. In fact, the
ships Columbus used could sail up to eight knots in speed which led to the slow trek across the sea
(Christopher Columbus Ship). Today's ships can travel up to twenty–five knots (Are Modern Ships
Slower Than Sailing Ships? Probably Not). Columbus would have arrived

Why Pluto Should Be Considered A Planet
Pluto should be considered a planet. According to Alan Stern a planetary scientist at the Southwest
Research Institute "No object in the solar system has entirely cleared its zone." so that means the
third rule rules out all the planets. It's consider a planet."The farther away a planet is from the sun,
the bigger it needs to be in order to clear its zone. If Earth circled the sun in Uranus' orbit, it
wouldn't be able to clear out its neighborhood and would not qualify as a planet." Stern Said. Why
should pluto be demoted on earth, we don't demote mammals or animals of their size if we have a
tiny mammal we wouldn't call it a dwarf mammal we would call it a Mammal not a dwarf mammal

When the water is stagnant and quiet, that is when the trouble comes. Storms aren't the cause of
most sailing crashes; it is the calmness that is dangerous (Lochhaas 1). The saying 'the calm before
the storm' might have actually been made for sailors. Jessica wanted waves to come so she could
learn and do something exciting. Many people were right in the danger side of sailing what they
failed to realize was the type of danger. Sailing has been part of Jessica's life since she can
remember and sailing has been around since mankind can remember.
Having her home on the water was not the only reason Jessica fell in love with sailing, it was also
the people who had sailed before her. Kay Cottee has been a role model for her since she started.
Kay Cottee has made history in the world of sailing achievements––the first woman to sail around
the world solo, unassisted and without stopping (Mundle 1). Cottee wanting to become the first
woman to accomplish this must have been a steep uphill battle. Sailing has been a male dominant
sport since the middle ages so Cottee is living proof that Jessica could do it too. Along with Cottee,
Jesse Martin influenced Jessica in a dramatic way. "I sat at the navigation table crying like a big
baby, sobbing and wailing. But they weren't tears of sadness or pity – they were tears of realization
at my new life" (Martin 116). Jessica knew her life would change after sailing around the world

The Old Man And The Sea
In The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway creates Santiago as a hero who demonstrates the
characteristics of determination, courage, endurance, and faith.
No amount of pain or physical abuse can bring Santiago from being determined or persistent.
Santiago is a fisherman who lives in Cuba and has gone eighty four days unable to catch a fish. The
first sentence of the book states: "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream
and he had gone eighty four days now without taking a fish." If a professional fisherman were to go
eighty four days without catching a fish that would be considered shameful, especially for an old
man. However, Santiago remains determined in order to earn a reputation as a "good" fisherman
from the other fisherman. In addition he does this to achieve what he has always wanted: a fish.
"But he thought, I keep them with precision. Only I have no luck anymore. But who knows? Maybe
today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck
comes you are ready." "Nothing happened. The fish just moved away slowly and the old man could
not raise him an inch. His line was strong and made for heavy fish and he held it against his hack
until it was so taut that beads of water were jumping from it. Then it began to make a slow hissing
sound in the water and he still held it, bracing himself against the thwart and leaning back against

"Should I send a teenager who has no experience with crisis out into the largest wilderness in the
world, completely surrounded on all sides by something that will kill them if they get in it?" Teens
should not sail because even though you can see the surface of the water, you don't know what lies
beneath. The water can be calm, but at the same time can be vicious.
The boaters passed the boating test, but the test doesn't put you in a real–life crisis. "Teenagers can
spend years on the water and still be emotionally and mentally unprepared to deal with emergency

example when you hit the water, you can barely move, because the water is cold and you're in

When a person boats, it's hard not to get caught up in the scene."You can see the shore, it's beautiful,
you can get caught up in the color of the water and the dolphins and the birds, and you feel so much

Voyages Of Columbus : The Voyage Of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus had three ships on his first voyage, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera on 3 August, 1492. His flagship, the Santa Maria had 52
men aboard while his other two ships, the Nina and Pinta were each crewed by 18 men.
The Santa Maria was a nao, was a bit of a tub, and was not able to go near the coastline. But was
able to carry a lot of cargo, and it was able to stand up well in bad weather. The Niña, the Pinta were
caravels, with a shallower draft than a nao, did not have much cargo space, but were able to explore
shallow bays and the mouths of rivers. A carvel was square–rigged on its foremasts and mainmasts,
but used a lateen sail on the mizzen to help in tacking. A caravel had about twenty crew members,
who slept on the deck and would go below only if the weather was bad.
The crew were gathered by Martín Alonso Pinzón (captain of the Pinta). They were experienced
sea–men, and four of them had taken an offer from the Spanish throne for amnesty from prison if
they took the voyage. Many of these sailors were from the nearby towns of Lepe and Moguer.
Over several days, ships of Columbus's day would average a little less than 4 knots. Top speed for
the vessels was about 8 knots, and minimum speed was zero. These speeds were quite typical for
vessels of the period. So overall, 90 or 100 miles in a day would be typical, and 200 phenomenal. Of
the three ships on the first voyage, the Santa Maria was the slowest,

Eye Opening Trip To The Caribbean Essay
The Eye–Opening Trip to The Caribbean It was a Sunday morning in the middle of May when our
family was on our way to the Caribbean. With that being said, we had a long 14–hour flight ahead
of us, but the sky was blue and we were all filled up with excitement as to what would come next. I
had never been in the Caribbean before and I did not know what to except. As we sat impatiently
waiting to board our plane, I started writing my diary for the trip. Because we were going to be
away for a good month or even more, I had to write a diary of my experiences and what I learned so
that I could turn it in when I got back to school. As I began writing, I started to brainstorm of what I
thought it was going to be like being in a very different culture with people you had never seen
before. As a blond, young girl, I did not know much about different cultures as I am from a country
with very little diversity. The only thing I knew was that the Caribbean was far, ... Show more

country's major leaders have sent a team of the best scientists and engineers to one main facility

Elon Musk had just came from his big speech about what his company SpaceX has found. It
revealed that the Sun's gravitational field is about to unwind and travel in its opposite direction,
releasing all Sun Spots energies, transmitting tremendous amounts of coronal mass ejections
(CMEs) and galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). Those rays will be spread radially out from the Sun's
atmosphere. It would not destroy the Sun however, as the Sun's magnetic field is just unraveled
rather than split. This would cause tremendous amounts of energy to be sent throughout our
universe. Most CMEs are expected to travel towards Earth. Mars on the other hand, is on a course to
the least amount of Sun Spots, and thus the least amount of energy impacting Mars. The Earth's
magnetic field is not strong enough to withstand all particles being blasted at the field at the speed
of light, causing the magnetic field to compress to the breaking point. Massive super computers
have calculated that point. It generated a model of the sun, and projected the lifespan of the earth to
be about 200 years. 200 years to save the human race. No one took him seriously. Everyone laughed
in his face, with good reason. Others have claimed to calculate the end of Earth for years and years.

The Differences Between Mars And Earth
The atmosphere is defined as the envelope of gases surrounding the Earth or another planet
(Dictionary, 2017). The atmosphere is necessary for human life and without it, human life would not
be sustained. It acts as a protective shield that keeps the Earth warm. Not only does it act as a
protective shield however, it also protects all living things on Earth from the sun's extremely
damaging ultraviolet radiation. In addition to this, the atmosphere provides oxygen for both human
and animals to breathe, and it provides carbon dioxide for plants. Without the atmosphere, life
would not be sustained among all living things (Earth Rice, 2017).
Much to common disbelief, Mars and Earth have many things in common. Some of these factors
include similarities in size, inclination, structure, composition and the presence of water on their
surfaces (Universe Today, 2016). Mars is the next closest planet to Earth. It withholds all necessary
elements needed for life to exist. These include water, carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrogen
(HowStuffWorks, 2017). There are also unbelievable similarities between Mars' atmosphere and the
Earth's atmosphere from billions of years ago. Like Mars, when the Earth was first formed it had no
oxygen and its atmosphere was comprised of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Earth was not able to
produce oxygen until photosynthetic bacteria developed (HowStuffWorks, 2017). Mars' atmosphere
consists of 95.3% carbon dioxide, 2.7% nitrogen, 1.6% argon and 0.2% oxygen.

The Discovery Of The New World
Ship Improvements
What were the events and improvements in ship design that lead to the discovery of the New World
and enabled the subsequent expansion in global trade? In this paper I will examine the changes and
improvements in European ship design that allowed for the first transatlantic voyage to the New
World. Though the Europeans were not the first to develop the concept of the ship, they were the
first to take this concept and use it to cross the Atlantic. Even before Columbus sailed across the
Atlantic to the New World, Europe had a long maritime history. Before the 15th and 16th century
European ship design had been relatively slow to advance from its initial stages. But during the 15th
and 16th century European ship design accelerated at break neck speeds to advance to the point of
enabling the Age of Exploration. Dr. Edwards states, "The major difference in father oceanic sailing
was the length of the voyages between landfalls. Longer voyages meant larger crews to man
watches through twenty–four hours, the need to carry larger stores of food, wood and water, and the
need for more spare equipment such as anchors and cables, sails, line for rigging, lumber, metal
work and gear for all kinds of repairs at sea or on distant shores where such things are unavailable"
(Edwards. 443). To accomplish this feat many improvements were required on earlier ship designs
that were used in maritime activities along the coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean. Though

Alexander Grant Quaoar Case Study
On August 5th 2031, Alexander Grant was launched on a mission to the Kuiper Belt Object 50000
Quaoar. Quaoar ("Kwawar") is primarily a rocky planet with a density of 2.2 g/cm2, setting it apart
from its icy neighbors. Its small size and high density made it a prime target for extraterrestrial
mining. Grant's propose on Quaoar was to prospect the planet and set up autonomous miners for the
soon to be Tongva Mining Facility.
Alex Grant's 6 billion kilometer journey to the outer reaches of the solar system was to be the
longest continuous spaceflight on record. His spacecraft, Endeavor, was equipped with a solar sail,
which harnesses the radiation and particles shooting off the sun – known as solar wind – to propel
the ship. The sail, a mirrored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The explosion on the space station was caused by faulty connection between two modules. The
initial hole in the hull was small, and was blocked by a contingency water container. The container
opened a hole, the water inside boiled, and caused a larger explosion that separated the capsule and
killed the astronaut inside. Such an accident might have ended, or at least delayed, a mission under
normal circumstances. The planets were aligned. If there was to be a mission, it would be on
schedule.

Letters from the Samantha
An interesting short story is "Letters from The Samantha" by Mark Helpin. This story
tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled
sailing ship in 1909 by Samson Low, the ship's captain. Although the author makes a point to tell the
reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact,
"He stands for nothing" (280), several arguments can be made to contradict this. One
could argue that the ape symbolized the untamed and rarely used wild side of Samson Low through
a comparison of their personalities, appearances, and the way they are treated by others. Samson
Low was a captain of a ship owned by the Green Star Line. He ... Show more content on

He is listless " (280). For the first time the captain has headaches' on the same journey he has
taken aboard an ape. The heat my be partially to blame but the guilt he feels of not living his life as
he secretly wants to could also be a factor. The ape also imitates what Samson Low does. When
Samson offers his hand to the creature, "In imitation, he put out his arm, looking much less
fearsome." (277). The captain and the ape act as if they are communicating on a different,
more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change
throughout the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him.
"The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish to have the monkey shot, and those
who would put him in his boat". (274). Because they do not understand him they wish to be
rid of him. The next stage is acceptance and approval. After the creature comes down from the
rigging and takes the captain's hand, "the crew cheered and laughed" (277). Now that
they no longer fear him, they enjoy his novelty as a kind of pet. They write home and describe the
ape with some pride; they are the ones who have this animal and have conquered him. The next step
is indifference. The crew ignored the ape where they had had such

The Wonders Of Modern Science And Astronomy
This work is a celebration of the wonders of modern science and astronomy. I set out to make a
children 's book that would be fun and educational in order to further younger generation 's interest
in fields of science. The work of scientists makes a huge difference in everybody 's life regardless if
you become one or not.Science makes the future come to us, they bring us to the farthest spots in
time and space and teach us a process for establishing a truth and making wise decisions. I wanted a
book that makes people slow down, think a little more, and dream, even if it is only for a
moment. What is laid out here is the process of developing this book 's visuals and the research that
heavily influenced them. We are a species that are innately nomads. We strive to find that new green
pasture that is just over the hill we have not passed yet. In current times we have explored all
frontiers available on earth, but now we have a great opportunity to search deep into space. Deep
Space exploration is in the efforts to help give us a perspective on our place in the cosmos, inspire,
and help our civilization persist through time.
Despite this we are constrained to how far we can travel in theory, no longer can we travel unending
distances. We are constrained to a cluster of 54 Galaxies that are drifting away from other clusters.

Essay On Ship Of Theseus
I think that the Ship of Theseus is an interesting idea. Every summer since 2002, my family has
gone to Hale Reservation. About ten years ago, I began to take sailing lessons there, and I continued
to take them until I started working there two years ago. Then, I started teaching some of the
lessons. During my time at Hale, many of the parts of the sailboats have changed. They are
constantly switched between the different boats. All of the sailboats are very old, and the parts break
frequently, or sometimes they are just lost. I remember about five years ago, one of the ropes fell off
and sank. This is just one of the many parts that has needed to be replaced. I never realized how
frequently the pieces broke, until I had to figure out what they needed to buy so the boats would
work. Although the parts of the boat themselves are always different, I still feel that they are still the
same as when I started taking sailing lessons there. I feel that they are the same as ... Show more

When I started going there, I was just a little kid. As I have grown up, Hale has changed. The things
I liked to do there, and the people that worked there are two of the noticeable things to me, and

there anymore. I know next year, assuming I work there again, will be very different. My brother
had worked there for the last seven years, and for the two years that I work there, he was the head
lifeguard. It is going to be strange with him not there, since he just graduated college and isn't going
to be back. In the fifteen years of going to Hale, he was always been there, either with my family, or
working there. Everything at Hale is changing. I thought it was kind of weird a couple years ago
when someone who used to work at Hale and taught me sailing lessons had to ask me if they could

Solar energy is transferred to the earth through radiation and the energy reaching the top of the
earth's atmosphere is estimated at 1400watts/m2. It is used directly for a wide range of human life
activities including simple domestic use – drying cloths, crop and providing hot water for home use;
commercial generation of electricity using photovoltaic equipment; and heating water to drive
turbines in thermal electric generators. In recent times photovoltaic cells are used to convert sunlight
into electricity with 40 percent efficiency Another method of using solar energy to generate
electricity also used in recent times is to convert the sun's energy into heat which is then stored in
thermal tanks. The thermal tanks contain molten salts or paraffin wax which can absorb tremendous
amount of heat energy without changing state. The heat can then be used as a heat source in steam
engines to drive electric generators. Such thermal tanks usually have capacities of up to 1.44 Tera

electricity can then be stored or used directly with solar inverters for AC

With a great vigor, humanity delights in escaping reality, even if only for a short time. Some choose
to play sports, some watch TV, and others still choose to spend their time reading. Withdrawal from
reality links all hobbies together. Likewise, I like to achieve this liberation by sailing. Imagine the
wind gusting across your body, the smell of the strong scent of water in your nostrils, and the thrill
of the breeze thrusting your boat along. Personally, I was astounded when I discovered this
microcosm twenty minutes away in the middle of the scorching desert.
Immediately upon exiting the car, the familiar tell–tale smell of the lake hit me. The lake smelled
like a combination of a fish and algae scent that seemed slightly putrid nevertheless, it did not
detract from the experience. On blustery days, I felt the zephyr blow through my hair and saw the
telltale whitecaps forming on the water's surface. On sunny days I saw the afternoon sun make the
greenish–brown water glimmer majestically and reflect off of the glass in the high rise buildings.
Nonchalantly, I ambled to the gated boatyard adjacent to the parking lot to retrieve my boat.
Casually, I sauntered just beyond the middle of the yard to the section where my class stored the
boats. Following a cursory inspection, I culled one that appeared to be in satisfactory shape and
pushed it out of the yard towards the lake. If I had luck on my side a friend would also help me with

Electricity Via Natural Sources : Solar And Wind Energy
ELECTRICITY VIA NATURAL SOURCES – SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY
SOLAR ENERGY:
INTRODUCTION –HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
As we all know that, history of solar energy is as old as the humans. Since last two centuries human
beings started to use it in order to generate electricity. We get electricity form the sun, directly by
some simplest processes or else we can get it without any processes too. 'Many materials produce
small amount of electricity when they are exposed to the light' – this was discovered by Alexandre
Edmond Becquerel in 1839. Photovoltaic (PV) converts sunlight into electricity. Sunlight based
power is apparently the cleanest, most dependable type of renewable energy accessible, and it can
be utilized as a part of a few structures to control your home. Sun powered controlled photovoltaic
(PV) boards change over the sun 's beams into power by energizing electrons in silicon cells
utilizing the photons of light from the sun. This power can then be utilized to supply renewable
energy to our homes. Solar panels are the devices that convert light to electric energy, which are
called "solar" panels. The powerful source of light is available from the Sunlight, which are called
Sol in technical world.
Solar electricity is a reusable form of energy. Solar panels are called as modules which contain
photovoltaic cells, which are made up of silicon that emits incoming sunlight into electricity instead
of heat. According to the recent studies from the World Energy Council,

The Complexity Of A Manufacturing Business
Part 1
Q: The video overview suggests the considerable complexity in PT Sails manufacturing. Do you
think the complexity of a manufacturing business is less for a small business than a large one?
Explain why or why not?
Answer: No, I do not think the complexity of a manufacturing business is less for a small business
than a large one. Because a large manufacturing business has a more standardized and formalized
rules, business process which can break down into many pieces. Large manufacturing businesses
can also become departmentalized which would make each work process more accurate and easier.
The most important reason is that a large manufacturing business could build and afford for a
relatively perfect information system compared to small manufacturing businesses. Information
system is a system which is composed of five components (hardware, software, data, process,
people) that interact to produce and interpret information (www.wikipedia.com). From the video, we
can see that Port Townsend does not have a formal and complete information system rather than just
saving customer and product information in paper documents. Actually, it is usually very expensive
for a small business to build a complete information system so that some small business even do not
have an information system (Cost Benefit Analysis of Information System, PG Sassonell, 1988). But
having an information system can simplify and facilitate many business process with accuracy, and

My Grandmother
We sat in my grandparent's living room. The large white curtains were drawn to keep the sun from
shining through. My grandpa sat in a red chair with an extra pillow behind him to support his back
as I sat in the red wheelchair that had been given to him after he had broken his hip. His face was
tanned and his hair was the same as it always was; a halo of white around his head with wispy
strands on top that I remember playing with from my childhood.. He had crinkles at the corners his
eyes and smile lines near his mouth from years of laughter. My grandma was nestled in the corner to
my right with Hillary Clinton's biography in hand. The pictures of my family that my grandma had
taken added a homey feeling to the room. Before the interview there was confusion as to how we
would go about it. My grandma said, "Why don't you ask the question and then..." her voice fell as
she didn't finish her question. She looked at us and began to listen as I asked my first question. My
grandpa was first inspired to begin sailing when he bought a small twelve foot sailboat while he was
living in Syracuse, New York with my grandma, my dad, and aunt. It had a lateen sail, which meant
that it did not have a sail on the mast in front of the boat. When they moved to Durham, New
Hampshire he would sail it on the Oyster River. He bought his boat at a store that sold boats called
sunflowers. When I asked how old he was when he got his first boat, a long pause filled the air

Personal Narrative: The International Space Rocket
Fear is an emotion caused by a prediction of the unknown. I have done many things in my life to
counteract my fears, yet no matter what I did fear was always present at home. In college, I saw an
advertisement that had bold letters written on it "Leave everything behind and look up to the stars"
by NASA. After graduation, I pursued to fulfill all the requirements to become an astronaut. I
obtained a BA in engineering, reached a minimum of 1,000 hours of flight time, and had regular
body checkups to see if I was fit enough. It took a while but I was eventually sent to the
International Space Station for a mission. When my time in the ISS was up my superiors told me I

I could feel and hear the thunderous roar of the rocket engine, imagining that just behind my chair
two huge tanks with fuel and oxygen connected by a series of pipes that intersect at a specific point
where they would have a controlled combustion chamber. In order for this rocket to successfully
launched we planned out that the thrust (2)(the force which moves an object through the air which is
from the propulsion system of the object) needed to be much more powerful (using F=ma) than the
forces pointing back to earth; weight force and drag force (Newtons third law on forces must be
equal for every action and reaction). I remembered with my time flying a jet we often had to realize
the relationship with thrust (thrust is the motion going in the direction and the other forces that can
point in other directions are lift, drag, and weight). I realized during my time doing these
calculations how grateful I was during my time with planes. For thrust we calculated that we needed
more speed than the weight force is the mass times gravity (3) (The force given off by a planet or
other another body that draws an object toward it). We had to keep in account of the earth's gravity
(earths gravitational force is 9.81 m/S^2) to be able to leave. The rockets speed needed to be at least
40,000 km/h otherwise the earth would pull me and my rocket back to earth. during the calculation

Using A Spinning Centrifuge On Earth
gradually heating the ship and leading to a host of mechanical issues that could have an effect the
steering, spinning, or integrity of the ship itself. This theoretical example was actually tested to see
the effects of simulating gravity for humans through use of a spinning centrifuge on Earth. The
experiment's design was to determine whether or not the subjects would develop an symptoms of
AMS or acute motion sickness. (Antonutto, 1992) The researchers discovered that none of the
subjects developed any symptoms as a result of the substitution of centripetal force for gravitational
force.(Antonutto, 1992) This gives a lot of hope for that method of combatting muscular atrophy,
spinal disk elongation, and the other previously mentioned effects, but this seems very resource
intensive to implement on all future designs, there is also very low practicality in this design. Every
portion of the ship would need to be build orientated along the interior curve of the ship. This would
be very disorientating for taking off and landing with proper orientation to the ground. There is
another method of ensuring an astronaut's simulation of gravity to prevent the reversible side effects
of weightlessness. Instead of making the entire vessel emulate gravity through centripetal force,
there is available technology that can create a force to act on the individual. It is an exercise method
and accompanying apparatus that claims to reduce muscular atrophy and loss of bone density more

Moor Research Paper
The derivation of the English term, "Moor," is the Greek word, "μαυρο" or "mavro" which
accurately means "black, blackened or charred", says taneter.org. They go on to then say, how this
English term 'Moor' has been used to describe black or very dark things such as, "Mavri Thalassa"
which refers to the Black Sea. Ancient Greeks used this term to describe the complexion of Africans
or objects of that matter. The origination of the term 'Moor' is even used in various terms that
describe the color 'black'. For example the Spanish word 'blackberry', is translated in Spanish as
'zaramora' , which carries the root word 'mor'. The term 'Moor', also define a partial part of our
postsecondary education, and example of this can be Morehouse College. The college itself describe
itself as, "The only all–male historically black institution of higher learning in the United States."
They go on to even then designate it as, "the college of choice for black men." It is now evident of
the trend that initiated from Renaissance ages in Europe to our everyday lives today. Therefore it
creates a proposal asking us, what was the influential things the Moors brought to Europe during the

General purpose: To inform
Specific purpose: To inform audience members on both modern and forthcoming capabilities of
space travel.
Thesis Statement: The current space travel capabilities do not allow for travel into interstellar space
and beyond. With the creation of laser beamed nanochips travelling at 100 million miles per hour,
we could reach the nearest star, Alpha Centauri in 20 years, gaining pictures and data from some
place far, far away.
Introduction:
Currently, it is very difficult to send humans and spacecraft anywhere in space, let alone out of our
own solar system. The cost and risk involved in sending people and objects into space have not
stopped humans from achieving impressive missions over the past 70 years. We have sent humans
248,655 miles deep into space and space craft 11.7 billion miles from the Earth. Although we are
making strides in furthering our space exploration, there are still steps being taken to travel further
than ever imaginable. With new and improving technology, scientists and others, are trying to find
ways to make it into interstellar space and beyond. Stephan Hawking and a Russian billionaire
unveiled their plan for an interstellar nanochip that could make it to Alpha Centauri in 20 years. This
may seem very exciting, but there are a few road bumps in the way to get the technology where it

Back on earth I loved to spend time in the gym to work out. This not only made my muscles healthy
but it was a good distraction from the realities of my classes in college, my jobs after college, and
other things. Working out also gave me a healthy mindset, which is perfect for travelling in space.
Looking out the window into space was truly mesmerizing. Seeing the infinite darkness with specs
of light from the stars gave me a whole new perspective. My first mission in space was a six month
stay on the International Space Station. From the ISS I could see an amazing sunrise, but this new
mission made me feel so disconnected from my home. Travelling where no man has ever gone gave
me new inspiration and courage.
As my destination approached I began to refresh my studies on Europa. Europa is a moon (11) (a

surface is fairly new due to the lack of crater impacts. The surface has many crevices and cracks
making it look like glaciers compressing and stretching. This is what brought scientists so curious.

Psysics Behind Changes In Planetary Orbit

  • 1. Psysics Behind Changes in Planetary Orbit Physics behind changes in planetary orbit April 07,2014 "Oh no, a small field of asteroid the size of Pluto is heading towards Earth on a direct collision course!" The Earth and all of its inhabitants are now facing certain extinction. What are the Earth's inhabitants to do? Is it possible to move the planet out of the way in time? Fortunately for humanity, there are many ways to actually change the Earth's orbit both plausible and unrealistic, but one must completely understand the physics behind each option so that no mistakes are made and we fully avoid suffering any consequences. First background information on our planet needed, Earth has been around for 4.54 billion years, it has a mass of 5.98x10^24 kg, a diameter of 12756 km, a velocity of about 67000 mph, and is about 149,597,890 km away from the Sun. To most this doesn't sound like a simple task, not knowing the trick is using Earth's orbit. An orbit is the gravitationally curved path of an object around a point in space, for example the path of a planet around the center of a star system, like in our Solar System (Encyclopedia). In order to change the orbit of a planet, one must consider the difference forces that can influence the planet's orbit: direct contact, gravitational assistance, solar sails, and the possible but not exactly plausible forces. The thought of an object coming on a collision with Earth is quite frightening, but surprisingly it could lead to our salvation. If an object of equal mass ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Discovery Of The Earth It is inevitable that the Sun will turn into a red giant and eventually a black hole, thus, killing everything that is left in our solar system. When this happens, the fate of the human race will either survive or go extinct. If we as a species intend on surviving, we must develop ways to colonize interstellar space. However, there is currently many limitations that don't allow humans to travel vast distances in short periods of time. Since the space race, there have been countless proposed propulsion solutions; however, with current technology one stands out. This being the solar sail. Solar sails were proposed by Johannes Kepler nearly 400 years ago. He believed that since Europe were still using naval exploration as their main means, that we could use sails to explore the galaxy. Kepler noted that when observing a comet's tail, there was that it was being blown around by solar breeze. With this theory, Kepler believed that we could use this breeze to propel this sail just like how wind on Earth propels a ship in the ocean. This theory has been disproven by scientists however. A solar sail is a large piece of aluminized, temperature–resistant material known as CP–1. There is another sail that is composed of aluminum reinforced Mylar. For a solar sail to work, it must have be reflective. This allows for light particles to bounce off of it, thus, creating a thrust. This would occur at a gentle rate giving the sail a gradual acceleration. Unlike other interstellar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Green Energy In the environment there are many concerns on how to make this a better place to live. One of the biggest issues is our energy and power sources. Green energy is a term used for sources of power and energy that are environmentally friendly. Basically this includes anything that is renewable energy. Renewable energy is considered energy that is constantly being replaced such as wood, vegetable matter, and trash. Green energy 's main focus is to use sources that can cut down on pollution. Some of these sources of power and energy are Biomass energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy and tidal energy. People hope that these will help use more natural sources to produce energy. In several countries you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Next time you get on your computer you can set up your computer to where the sleep mode is on and also the hibernate comes on after thirty minutes. Another thing is taking control of the temperature. During the winter you can set your thermostat at 68 degrees or less during the day and 55 degrees at night before you go to sleep. During the summer you can set it at 78 degrees or more. Also you can set your thermostat on your water heater between 120 and 130 degrees. The only drawback with this one is you can take really long hot showers. So with all these information you can decide if you are for or against green energy. I believe we should start doing something about our environment before we are too late. I personally am for green energy. You don 't necessarily have to go out get green energy as your electricity source but doing little can always help our universe. The good green energy is that there are several sources of energy that we can use and if using these types of energy help clean up our air pollution and atmosphere I 'm all for ... • 4. Essay about History of Solar Advancements History of Solar Advancements Our sun provides us with a virtually unlimited resource that we have used for centuries in a multiple of ways. We use it to keep us warm, to grow our food and generate millions if kilowatts of electricity. Everyday the sun showers the earth with more potential energy that we produce in that day or even that week. According to the Go Solar Company (1999–2003), "on an acre of land with the sun overhead is receiving more the four thousand horsepower, which is equivalent to a large railroad locomotive, and in less than three days of the same intensity will match the estimated total of all fossil fuels on the earth". Many of the visionaries I will be talking about explored almost all the renewable energy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The architecture used and in many cases was dependant on passive solar heating, which they used in their, buildings, baths and especially homes. The Greeks were the first to use solar architecture. "They oriented their houses to make use of the sun during winter, while obscuring its rays during summer ... entire cities were built this way as early as 400 BC." (Perlin, 2000). The Greek also used solar radiation in times of war, using reflective mirrors, they would concentrate the sun's energy on raiding Roman ships, setting their fabric sails up in flame (Solar Energy Sci. 1999). The Romans were the first to use window glass to efficiently capture the heat derived by passive solar heating. A glass window allows the sunlight to come in, but traps the heat, much like your car does when it is parked in the sun. According to John Perlin (2000), passive solar heating was so important that there were laws passed prohibiting the blocking of someone's solar access. It wasn't until the 18th century that someone experimented with the heat that accumulates in a glass enclosed space; tanks filled with water were put inside the box that had a glass lid. The glass lid propelled the water to reach very high temperatures, that would other wise be impossible. Water has incredible latent heating potential and this was the basis for the heating system using in the glass– enclosed box. In 1909 William J. Bailey was able to separate the water heating system with a water storage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Giant Butterflies Symbolism Vladimir Kush on his beautiful oil canvas has depicted a three–masted sailing ship heading out to the open sea on a windy day. The ship is very different than your everyday sailing ship what strike out most is the giant butterflies that form the sails on the ship; it's as if these butterflies are catching the heavy wind that is blowing out into the sea. The conditions on the sea look fairly calm but the sea looks wavy and moving clouds show us the strong wind that is carrying the ship out. People on the shore are seen holding windsock as an indication to show the strength of the wind. People are also seen wind surfing across the seashore and there too butterfly wings have taken over the place of traditional sails. The beautiful painting is a visual treat to anyone laying eyes on it. The blue sky the wavy water the sailboats all are ironic to any coastal shore. The moon on the distance is an indication that it's early dusk or dawn. The sea looks windswept but calm and clear rather than stormy and angry. The ship is setting out on a long journey but the butterflies are an indication to a positive spin on departure so it's probably intended for people who have had or will have firsthand experience with departure and those emotions. Winged ship is portrayed to bring in a calming and cheering effect. And Kush has used his imagination to depict the painting; he has used pure imagination in creating winged ship. And a lot is dependent on the kind of condition that he was born in, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. My Interest in a Career at Sea I have always been interested in the sea, in particularly the merchant navy and have spent a lot of time on the water. I live near two busy port towns and have always had an interest in the ships coming and leaving the harbour. When I started looking into future career opportunities, this was always the career path I wanted to pursue. It is exciting, unique and no two days are the same. My interest in a career at sea really kicked off after joining the school sailing club, where I achieved RYA level 1 and 2 in dinghy sailing. Eager to learn more, I joined a sailing club in Chichester Harbour. I now enjoy social sailing and club racing. At the age of 15 I completed my RYA – Power Boat Level 2, Safety Boat and First Aid qualifications and at 16 achieved a RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification to teach on coastal waters. I was a member of the 5th Chichester Scout group starting from Beavers, to Scouts, working up through all the ranks. It was a great experience which helped me to build lasting friendships; to get outdoors and to learn people skills. I spent some memorable times hiking on the South Downs, learning to plan routes, map reading and working in teams. As a member of the junior dinghy instructor team at Dell Quay Sailing club, I volunteer my time to teach sailing and to support the junior race series, either by helming a safety boat or as an assistant race officer. Each summer, the club runs a junior week where the junior instructors are encouraged too take the lead. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sailing Persuasive Essay While boats are a lot of fun, there may be times when a boat owner has had enough, they may decide that their sail boat is just taking up space and costing them money, yet, they aren't getting much use out of it. Or perhaps the enjoyment you once got from your sail boat has been replaced by your desire to take it easy. Sailing can be a rigorous sport. Maybe it's time to turn to a power boat, so you can sit back and relax, while the engine does all the work. • 10. Renewable Energy : Solar Energy The fossil fuels have been some of the primary sources of energy that we use in the world. There are some negatives to them like they pollute the air and it would not be renewable. It also has bad effects on the environment. This is where Alternative energies come into play. These sources are very efficient. There are multiple of these Alternative energies like Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Hydroelectricity, etc. These are some energies that will help us be more efficient with our energy choices. The ones listed are the ones that I will talk about more in depth. The first energy that I will talk about is Solar energy. Solar energy is from the sun. According to Conserve Energy Source, a website dedicated about alternative Energy sources, "Solar is the first energy source in the world. It was in use much earlier before humans even learn how to light a fire. The solar is mostly used in generating light and heat (Rinkesh)." The sun radiates its heat and comes down upon the earth producing heat from the sun's rays. This is where PV cells come in. PV cells collect the sun's energy for you to power stuff in your home. Solar energy has two different types of energy, Active and Passive solar energy. Active energy is when electrical technology and mechanical technology convert energy for future use. Passive solar energy uses duration, position and the sun's intensifies it in a certain place (Rinkesh). Some positives to Solar energies are that, "Solar energy does not create any ... • 12. Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus In 1492, Christopher Columbus began the voyage that would earn him the name as the most successful failure in modern history. Columbus began his voyage as a Spanish explorer seeking a new trade route to the East Indies with two caravels and one flagship. Additionally, Columbus armed his fleet with eighty–eight crewmen. Columbus arrived at his supposed destination in approximately three months after he first set sail in Spain. Columbus' arrival on land marked a monumental stepping stone for European nations, Columbus had discovered the new world. Without a doubt, Christopher Columbus experienced difficulties on his voyage due to his lack of access to modern technological tools. Christopher Columbus would have most benefited from better ships, weather gauging tools, and any form of communication. Therefore, if Christopher Columbus had the resources available today, perhaps he would have landed in his desired destination and the decimation of native civilizations may have been prevented. Christopher Columbus crossed the oceans in three ships that were ill–suited for the voyage across the Atlantic. For example, these explorers were archaic compared to the technology of new ships of the 20th century. In fact, the ships Columbus used could sail up to eight knots in speed which led to the slow trek across the sea (Christopher Columbus Ship). Today's ships can travel up to twenty–five knots (Are Modern Ships Slower Than Sailing Ships? Probably Not). Columbus would have arrived ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No amount of pain or physical abuse can bring Santiago from being determined or persistent. Santiago is a fisherman who lives in Cuba and has gone eighty four days unable to catch a fish. The first sentence of the book states: "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty four days now without taking a fish." If a professional fisherman were to go eighty four days without catching a fish that would be considered shameful, especially for an old man. However, Santiago remains determined in order to earn a reputation as a "good" fisherman from the other fisherman. In addition he does this to achieve what he has always wanted: a fish. Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera on 3 August, 1492. His flagship, the Santa Maria had 52 men aboard while his other two ships, the Nina and Pinta were each crewed by 18 men. The Santa Maria was a nao, was a bit of a tub, and was not able to go near the coastline. But was able to carry a lot of cargo, and it was able to stand up well in bad weather. The Niña, the Pinta were caravels, with a shallower draft than a nao, did not have much cargo space, but were able to explore shallow bays and the mouths of rivers. A carvel was square–rigged on its foremasts and mainmasts, but used a lateen sail on the mizzen to help in tacking. A caravel had about twenty crew members, who slept on the deck and would go below only if the weather was bad. The crew were gathered by Martín Alonso Pinzón (captain of the Pinta). They were experienced sea–men, and four of them had taken an offer from the Spanish throne for amnesty from prison if they took the voyage. Many of these sailors were from the nearby towns of Lepe and Moguer. Over several days, ships of Columbus's day would average a little less than 4 knots. • 21. The Differences Between Mars And Earth The atmosphere is defined as the envelope of gases surrounding the Earth or another planet (Dictionary, 2017). The atmosphere is necessary for human life and without it, human life would not be sustained. It acts as a protective shield that keeps the Earth warm. Not only does it act as a protective shield however, it also protects all living things on Earth from the sun's extremely damaging ultraviolet radiation. In addition to this, the atmosphere provides oxygen for both human and animals to breathe, and it provides carbon dioxide for plants. Without the atmosphere, life would not be sustained among all living things (Earth Rice, 2017). Much to common disbelief, Mars and Earth have many things in common. Some of these factors include similarities in size, inclination, structure, composition and the presence of water on their surfaces (Universe Today, 2016). Mars is the next closest planet to Earth. It withholds all necessary elements needed for life to exist. These include water, carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrogen (HowStuffWorks, 2017). There are also unbelievable similarities between Mars' atmosphere and the Earth's atmosphere from billions of years ago. Like Mars, when the Earth was first formed it had no oxygen and its atmosphere was comprised of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Earth was not able to produce oxygen until photosynthetic bacteria developed (HowStuffWorks, 2017). Mars' atmosphere consists of 95.3% carbon dioxide, 2.7% nitrogen, 1.6% argon and 0.2% oxygen. ... The Discovery Of The New World Ship Improvements What were the events and improvements in ship design that lead to the discovery of the New World and enabled the subsequent expansion in global trade? In this paper I will examine the changes and improvements in European ship design that allowed for the first transatlantic voyage to the New World. Though the Europeans were not the first to develop the concept of the ship, they were the first to take this concept and use it to cross the Atlantic. Even before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to the New World, Europe had a long maritime history. Before the 15th and 16th century European ship design had been relatively slow to advance from its initial stages. But during the 15th and 16th century European ship design accelerated at break neck speeds to advance to the point of enabling the Age of Exploration. Dr. Edwards states, "The major difference in father oceanic sailing was the length of the voyages between landfalls. Longer voyages meant larger crews to man watches through twenty–four hours, the need to carry larger stores of food, wood and water, and the need for more spare equipment such as anchors and cables, sails, line for rigging, lumber, metal work and gear for all kinds of repairs at sea or on distant shores where such things are unavailable" (Edwards. 443). To accomplish this feat many improvements were required on earlier ship designs that were used in maritime activities along the coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean. Though ... This story tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled sailing ship in 1909 by Samson Low, the ship's captain. Although the author makes a point to tell the reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact, "He stands for nothing" (280), several arguments can be made to contradict this. The captain and the ape act as if they are communicating on a different, more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change throughout the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him. "The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish to have the monkey shot, and those who would put him in his boat". After the creature comes down from the rigging and takes the captain's hand, "the crew cheered and laughed" (277). Now that they no longer fear him, they enjoy his novelty as a kind of pet. Electricity Via Natural Sources : Solar And Wind Energy ELECTRICITY VIA NATURAL SOURCES – SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY SOLAR ENERGY: INTRODUCTION –HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT As we all know that, history of solar energy is as old as the humans. Since last two centuries human beings started to use it in order to generate electricity. We get electricity form the sun, directly by some simplest processes or else we can get it without any processes too. 'Many materials produce small amount of electricity when they are exposed to the light' – this was discovered by Alexandre Edmond Becquerel in 1839. Photovoltaic (PV) converts sunlight into electricity. Sunlight based power is apparently the cleanest, most dependable type of renewable energy accessible, and it can be utilized as a part of a few structures to control your home. Sun powered controlled photovoltaic (PV) boards change over the sun 's beams into power by energizing electrons in silicon cells utilizing the photons of light from the sun. This power can then be utilized to supply renewable energy to our homes. Solar panels are the devices that convert light to electric energy, which are called "solar" panels. The powerful source of light is available from the Sunlight, which are called Sol in technical world. Solar electricity is a reusable form of energy. Because a large manufacturing business has a more standardized and formalized rules, business process which can break down into many pieces. Large manufacturing businesses can also become departmentalized which would make each work process more accurate and easier. The most important reason is that a large manufacturing business could build and afford for a relatively perfect information system compared to small manufacturing businesses. After I removed the boat from the boatyard, The instructor would either tell me to help someone transport another boat out of the boatyard After all the boats were out and ready to be rigged, the instructor would tell the other students and me to start rigging the boats. Normally, I take about ten minutes to rig a boat myself and five with help from a friend. It is a pretty simple process and involves checking the boat for any damage, making sure the drain plug is screwed in tight, and hoisting the sails halfway up. Next, the instructor launches the boats with his truck and I rushed to the boat to prepare it to sail. I would lower the keel and rudder, raise the sails to the top of the mast. At last, I was sailing. When I first set the sail and feel the wind just start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. My Grandmother We sat in my grandparent's living room. The large white curtains were drawn to keep the sun from shining through. My grandpa sat in a red chair with an extra pillow behind him to support his back as I sat in the red wheelchair that had been given to him after he had broken his hip. His face was tanned and his hair was the same as it always was; a halo of white around his head with wispy strands on top that I remember playing with from my childhood.. He had crinkles at the corners his eyes and smile lines near his mouth from years of laughter. My grandma was nestled in the corner to my right with Hillary Clinton's biography in hand. The pictures of my family that my grandma had taken added a homey feeling to the room. Before the interview there was confusion as to how we would go about it. My grandma said, "Why don't you ask the question and then..." her voice fell as she didn't finish her question. She looked at us and began to listen as I asked my first question. My grandpa was first inspired to begin sailing when he bought a small twelve foot sailboat while he was living in Syracuse, New York with my grandma, my dad, and aunt. It had a lateen sail, which meant that it did not have a sail on the mast in front of the boat. When they moved to Durham, New Hampshire he would sail it on the Oyster River. He bought his boat at a store that sold boats called sunflowers. When I asked how old he was when he got his first boat, a long pause filled the air before finally he said he ... • 33. Personal Narrative: The International Space Rocket Fear is an emotion caused by a prediction of the unknown. I have done many things in my life to counteract my fears, yet no matter what I did fear was always present at home. In college, I saw an advertisement that had bold letters written on it "Leave everything behind and look up to the stars" by NASA. After graduation, I pursued to fulfill all the requirements to become an astronaut. I obtained a BA in engineering, reached a minimum of 1,000 hours of flight time, and had regular body checkups to see if I was fit enough. It took a while but I was eventually sent to the International Space Station for a mission. When my time in the ISS was up my superiors told me I was to get prepared for another mission. "what kind of mission" I asked. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I could feel and hear the thunderous roar of the rocket engine, imagining that just behind my chair two huge tanks with fuel and oxygen connected by a series of pipes that intersect at a specific point where they would have a controlled combustion chamber. In order for this rocket to successfully launched we planned out that the thrust (2)(the force which moves an object through the air which is from the propulsion system of the object) needed to be much more powerful (using F=ma) than the forces pointing back to earth; weight force and drag force (Newtons third law on forces must be equal for every action and reaction). I remembered with my time flying a jet we often had to realize the relationship with thrust (thrust is the motion going in the direction and the other forces that can point in other directions are lift, drag, and weight). I realized during my time doing these calculations how grateful I was during my time with planes. For thrust we calculated that we needed more speed than the weight force is the mass times gravity (3) (The force given off by a planet or other another body that draws an object toward it). We had to keep in account of the earth's gravity (earths gravitational force is 9.81 m/S^2) to be able to leave. The rockets speed needed to be at least 40,000 km/h otherwise the earth would pull me and my rocket back to earth. during the calculation phase of the mission ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Using A Spinning Centrifuge On Earth gradually heating the ship and leading to a host of mechanical issues that could have an effect the steering, spinning, or integrity of the ship itself. This theoretical example was actually tested to see the effects of simulating gravity for humans through use of a spinning centrifuge on Earth. The experiment's design was to determine whether or not the subjects would develop an symptoms of AMS or acute motion sickness. (Antonutto, 1992) The researchers discovered that none of the subjects developed any symptoms as a result of the substitution of centripetal force for gravitational force.(Antonutto, 1992) This gives a lot of hope for that method of combatting muscular atrophy, spinal disk elongation, and the other previously mentioned effects, but this seems very resource intensive to implement on all future designs, there is also very low practicality in this design. Every portion of the ship would need to be build orientated along the interior curve of the ship. This would be very disorientating for taking off and landing with proper orientation to the ground. There is another method of ensuring an astronaut's simulation of gravity to prevent the reversible side effects of weightlessness. Instead of making the entire vessel emulate gravity through centripetal force, there is available technology that can create a force to act on the individual. It is an exercise method and accompanying apparatus that claims to reduce muscular atrophy and loss of bone density more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Moor Research Paper The derivation of the English term, "Moor," is the Greek word, "μαυρο" or "mavro" which accurately means "black, blackened or charred", says taneter.org. They go on to then say, how this English term 'Moor' has been used to describe black or very dark things such as, "Mavri Thalassa" which refers to the Black Sea. Ancient Greeks used this term to describe the complexion of Africans or objects of that matter. The origination of the term 'Moor' is even used in various terms that describe the color 'black'. For example the Spanish word 'blackberry', is translated in Spanish as 'zaramora' , which carries the root word 'mor'. The term 'Moor', also define a partial part of our postsecondary education, and example of this can be Morehouse College. The college itself describe itself as, "The only all–male historically black institution of higher learning in the United States." They go on to even then designate it as, "the college of choice for black men." It is now evident of the trend that initiated from Renaissance ages in Europe to our everyday lives today. Therefore it creates a proposal asking us, what was the influential things the Moors brought to Europe during the age of the Renaissance? • 36. Personal Statement : Space Travel Name: Austin Autry Title: Space Travel General purpose: To inform Specific purpose: To inform audience members on both modern and forthcoming capabilities of space travel. Thesis Statement: The current space travel capabilities do not allow for travel into interstellar space and beyond. With the creation of laser beamed nanochips travelling at 100 million miles per hour, we could reach the nearest star, Alpha Centauri in 20 years, gaining pictures and data from some place far, far away. Introduction: Currently, it is very difficult to send humans and spacecraft anywhere in space, let alone out of our own solar system. The cost and risk involved in sending people and objects into space have not stopped humans from achieving impressive missions over the past 70 years. We have sent humans 248,655 miles deep into space and space craft 11.7 billion miles from the Earth. Although we are making strides in furthering our space exploration, there are still steps being taken to travel further than ever imaginable. With new and improving technology, scientists and others, are trying to find ways to make it into interstellar space and beyond. Stephan Hawking and a Russian billionaire unveiled their plan for an interstellar nanochip that could make it to Alpha Centauri in 20 years. This may seem very exciting, but there are a few road bumps in the way to get the technology where it needs to be. Body: 1. • 37. Research Paper On Europa's Gravity remember asking my team members why we did not need to calculate as much for the return trip thinking about the moon Europa's gravity? "Of course, it is a factor but the gravity of earth compared to Europa is very different (Europa's gravity is very like our moon, which is 5/6 less than earth's gravity)." A team member responded. The escape velocity (4) (the velocity required for an object to leave the gravitational field) to leave earth was one that my space craft needed to beat in order for my mission to be a success. (the escape velocity for earth is 11.2 km/s) The escape velocity takes in account the gravitational force, the mass of the object, and the radius (the distance of from the center of the earth) (the escape velocity is the sum ... This not only made my muscles healthy but it was a good distraction from the realities of my classes in college, my jobs after college, and other things. Working out also gave me a healthy mindset, which is perfect for travelling in space. Looking out the window into space was truly mesmerizing. Seeing the infinite darkness with specs of light from the stars gave me a whole new perspective. My first mission in space was a six month stay on the International Space Station. From the ISS I could see an amazing sunrise, but this new mission made me feel so disconnected from my home. Travelling where no man has ever gone gave me new inspiration and courage. As my destination approached I began to refresh my studies on Europa. Europa is a moon (11) (a celestial body that orbits around a planet) (Jupiter has 63 moons) (moons can also be described as a natural satellite) of the Galilean family orbiting Jupiter. Europa is similar in the size of the earth's moon but slightly smaller (Europa's mass 4.8 * 10^22 kg compared to the moon 7.3*10^22 kg). The surface is fairly new due to the lack of crater impacts. The surface has many crevices and cracks making it look like glaciers compressing and stretching. This is what brought scientists so curious. The stretching due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Alpha Centauri Research Paper The nearest star to our solar system is Alpha Centauri which is about 4.37 light years away from our Earth, which equates to about 25 trillion miles from our Earth. Using traditional spacecraft, it would take us about 165,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri. Now I will be planning a trip to the star to observe if there is any life on one of its planets and will be providing step by step details of my journey. I will travel to Alpha Centauri by myself, not with a spaceship, but with a Solar Sail. Solar Sails are a cost effective way of traveling to stars and planets outside of the solar system. The biggest benefit with a Solar Sail is that it does not require any rockets to propel it nor any fuel. It uses radiation pressure from stars to push ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In planning this trip I would need to have enough food for me to survive for 8.74 years. An average human needs about 2500 calories a day so that would mean they need a total of 8 million calories for my total time in space. I will buy space food packs from NASA which each one fulfilling all of my daily calorie and nutrition requirements. In order for me to survive that trip I will need to buy 3193 space food packs. For water an average person needs about 2 liters of water a day and for my trip that would be a total of 1700 gallons. So to begin my journey I would pack 3196 NASA space food packs and 1700 gallons of water in my Solar Sail. I will escape from Earth's gravity at the speed of light and it will take me approximately 4.37 years to reach Alpha Centauri. One I am near Alpha Centuari I will descend on one of its planets and take a sample of its outer crust to bring back to earth for testing for life.
