The document discusses how poor time management can cause high school students to fail classes. It argues that many students do not develop good study habits in high school and instead procrastinate or take on too many responsibilities without leaving enough time for schoolwork. This can carry over into college and result in failing courses due to an inability to properly plan out one's time and prioritize schoolwork. Developing strong time management skills is presented as important for academic success.
1. High School Start Time Essay
A problem that burdens classrooms across the nation is a lack of energy and fatigue. Early start
times for school cause students to wake–up early, and the large amounts of homework cause them to
stay up late. The lack of sleep affects teenage student worst of all because their developing brains
need the most sleep possible. Consequently, students' grades could begin to suffer because they are
not retaining information. "I feel exhausted and unable to learn," says a student when asked how she
feels in her first–hour class. Research states that the average school start time is 8:00. To avoid this
dilemma, schools should start classes later, have a study period first–hour in lieu of an actual class,
or assign less homework so students can get to bed at a reasonable time.
One solution that could improve energy in the classroom is if classes started later. Even starting
thirty minutes later could allow students extra time to get ready and make their way to school. This
is especially a concern for students living in rural areas who, in many cases, need to travel long
distances to get to school. The same can go for inner–city students who may need to transfer buses
or trains. Starting classes thirty minutes later could benefit those students to leave earlier, and also
grant students who live closer more sleep. Many people argue that starting ... Show more content on

The students can study for that day's upcoming classes and extracurricular activities could hold
meetings. Some schools have started doing small enrichment classes at the beginning of the day that
allows students to choose classes, such as gardening, fantasy football, and so on to participate in.
These classes, while not graded, are a fun way to kick off the day with an easygoing activity, and
can help wake students up before they head to their more difficult

3. The Time I Gained To Read In High School
The earliest I have of myself reading is in early kindergarten. Vividly, I remember parking my butt
right in front of my decaying bookshelf. The white shelves was filled with skinny books placed in
our kitchen (at the time my family lived in a small apartment, so the entrance near the kitchen was
the only place to put it). At the time, I picked books of the bottom shelf and try to read the whole
stack. I absolutely loved reading when I was younger. Yet somehow, whether or not it was because I
was forced to read in school, or over a gradual slump– my passion died out. Nevertheless, my
younger self was infatuated with reading, and it might as well be worth sharing.
Since kindergarten the biggest push over the course of the year was to read, and being the young, ...

My class had a fantastic book selection for the English curriculum. During the ninety minutes spent
dedicated to either The BFG, Bridge to Terabithia, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, or the
Phantom Tollbooth, and I felt comfortable while my teacher read a chapter or two to us everyday. To
this day I have the books sitting on my shabby bookshelf. I haven't opened them in a long time, but I
refuse to give them away. Not only that but, my teacher once read an Encyclopedia Brown book,
and that got me interested in mystery books. In fact, the next time I went to the library, I got eight
Encyclopedia Brown books and read them all in two days.
By seventh grade, I didn't like to read as much as I used to. It's probably due to the fact that
throughout my school years, reading had to be done, and the type of reading was enjoyable. That
was the case for some of seventh grade, but two books I read in English class stood out to me. One
was a memoir, Red Scarf Girl and the other was a nonfiction book about the atomic bomb, simply
named Bomb. The way the author crafted each book, made me read them over and over in a few

5. High School Start Times
Beep Beep Beep Beep. It is 5:30 A.M, you were up late last night working on an atrocious math
assignment; and all you want is to roll over and ignore that you have to go catch the bus at 7:15
A.M. Sometimes, you're lucky enough to get a ride or drive to school and get an extra five or ten
minutes of sleep, while still making it to first hour in time for the pledge of allegiance. Then, by the
time second hour rolls around it is only 8:30 A.M. This example shows school start times are
affecting the teenagers and preteenagers of our generation. These early school start times are
beginning to create a decrease in students grades, concentration levels, tardiness, absences, and the
amount of sleep the students are getting each night. For the first time, the federal Center for Disease
Control and Prevention is urging education policy makers to start middle and high schools later in
the morning. The idea is to improve the students sleep and concentration levels during school. As
you can see, high schools and middle schools should start later in the morning. Unfortunately, many
students face the struggle of staying awake in classes and being able to concentrate on what is being
taught. The reason for this is many teens are not getting enough sleep at night. The amount of sleep
an average individual should be getting each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

7. It's Time To Get Involved In High School
High School can be a terrifying experience to a freshman, but what we need to understand, is that it
can be fun, if you let it be. If you join clubs and get involved then your highschool experience will
be a good one, also you need to keep good friends close, but still make new ones, and you have no
idea what a person is going through, be nice to everyone because it might be the worst day they've
ever had. To begin, high school will be much more fun if you get involved in activities. According to
Jessica Booth colleges like it when they see activities on your resume, you will also meet more
people, and make new friends that enjoy similar activities to you. Jessica Booth also said, "Your
grades shouldn't be the most important part of highschool." They are important, but if you don't join
clubs in order to keep your straight A's then you won't have very much fun during high school, you
should find a balance between grades and activities to have a great high school experience. Next,

Students in high school struggle with sleep so seriously that medical professionals call it an
epidemic, with 87% of students getting less than the recommended amount of sleep (Richter). It's
difficult to balance sports and extracurriculars with school and homework, and, come junior and
senior year, college applications and jobs as well. All these activities in students' lives leave them
little time for a good night's sleep. Unfortunately for them, sleep is actually crucial, as it has not only
been shown to improve GPA, but also help students with memorizing information (Hershner). Not

The goal of this restructuring would be to encourage students to go to sleep at an appropriate hour
and get enough sleep to function best the next morning. The tenets of the new schedule would be a
later school start time, which we hope would allow for students to sleep longer in the morning.
Schools that have implemented later start times have experienced both academic improvements and
better overall school climates ("Why Change"). Also, later school times are important for teenagers
as their circadian rhythms make them more inclined to go to bed later than adults (Hershner), so
more sleep in the morning would account for their different sleep habits. Furthermore, a limit would
be imposed on homework load. Students often stay up very late finishing their homework, so
limiting homework loads will curb this problem. Additionally, we would offer seminars for parents
at schools, teaching them about the recommending tactics to help their kids not only get more sleep,
but work more efficiently. Studies have been conducted that show improvements in kids sleeping
schedules when parents impose and enforce a sleeping schedule (Richter). Alongside teaching them
useful parenting practices, we would also teach them of the importance of sleep, and how it has been

It seems as if high school was meant to suck individuality and joy out of students. Go exactly
against the norm, and have as much fun as possible. Clearly, being lively as possible could not
benefit test scores at all. The fourth step is most definitely not putting forth any effort towards
studying. Don't even study the night before a test or quiz. That occasionally helps grades, so put
forth no effort at all. Don't ever bring work home to do, so you can have it done on time. Late grades
are always good as explained in the previous paragraphs. The number one rule with this step of
failing high school is absolutely, at any time, under any circumstances go to tutoring. Tutoring will
support test scores tremendously. This step may be the most important step in failing all classes. The
final step would be to lose as many papers or supplies avaliable. Not having a pencil or paper leads
to missed work also. It damages grades tremendously. Losing papers that was forced to do is also a
good idea. A teacher/professor cannot do anything about lost papers except put a big fat zero in the

I believe that the high school best represents the conflict theory. I think this because all there is in
the halls of Douglas high is conflict. Whether to go to class or hang with friends, go to school or

I really liked how the filmmakers followed all the problem down to the personal level. For example

Another problem facing the school is the lack of support from parents. I believe that the blame
extends beyond teachers and administrators. For example in the auditorium on Back to School
Night. The film shows the principal, at the podium enthusiastically welcoming the parents to the
school. But then, the camera pans back to reveal only a few parents in attendance. I was shocked
with the science teacher who said only one parent visited his classroom during the back–to–school

19. Time Management In High School
Time Management
What would make a student fail a class? There are many reason why someone could fail.
Students from every college across the nation struggle with financial problems, transportation,
picking the wrong major, etc. A major problem with many students, including myself, is poor time
management. Not the most well–known reason to fail a class and is mostly thought of to be a small
problem, but it causes smart people to slip up in college a lot. Either it be having a full plate of
responsibilities and not having enough time for school or just pure procrastination, it can very easily
lead someone to flunk a college course.
With most students it's that they don't make good study habits in high school and it carries into
college. Students don't bother with planning out their time and wait till the last minute to study for
an exam or to finish an essay. This may have worked sometimes in high school, but in college it is
impossible to be successful with horrible habits with the workload students receive in college
compared to high school. In "The Student Fear Factor" Melanie says
"I never realized how fast college would be, comparing one year of high school with one semester
of college. It's really fast pace." (Cox 24). With way more information to learn and exams to take

21. High School Is An Exciting Time Essay

is an exciting time. It is the beginning of the end, their last hurrah before they go off on their own as
college students. While students may be ecstatic to experience all that high school has to offer, some
parents are apprehensive. They know the next four years will play a vital role in their child's future.
Parents wonder whether their local high school will prepare their child for the difficult transition
from high school to college. This type of thinking may lead parents to seek out other academic
options for their children. Marian High School, a private school located in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan, draws in approximately 120 incoming freshman every year; they attain this number
through the use of powerful rhetorical appeals on their website. Marian entices parents looking for
an alternative to their local high school by tugging on emotions that are entangled with religion,
using convincing numerical statistics and by exhibiting the accomplishments of their graduates. As a
result of the US Constitution's ambiguity, national laws are perplexing when it comes to religion in a
public high school. In terms of speaking on religion teachers are frequently walking a fine line
between legality and illegality, and for this reason public schools tend to abstain from any religions
conversation. For most, religion is a profoundly personal and consequently emotional topic. Some

school student, which most people can relate to. It then makes the point of how very crammed the
average day for a young adolescent is with a severe lack of down time and the slew of negative
consequences because of this. This rushed school day, in combination with the average number of
students per class which is twenty or so, causes students and staff members to miss the opportunity

country start before the recommended time of 8:30 am, particularly high schools which start the

concentration, which results in poor academic achievement and safety issues. High schools in the

By the time they travel and arrive at school most of the year, it is still dark out, which is another
factor that can lead to fatigue and feeling tired for the duration of the day, and end up affecting
academic performance. According to a 2017 study published by Jennifer Heissel, an assistant
professor of Human Development and Social Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School, and Samuel
Norris, a professor of economics: " We find that moving start times one hour later relative to sunrise
increases test scores by 0.08 and 0.06 standard deviations for adolescents in math and reading". The
improvements may not seem like much, but over a large scale of students it adds up and becomes
quite significant. These scores affect both students' chances for college acceptance and overall
district ratings. Shouldn't we do all we can to improve? The study, published by Heissel and Norris
covers multiple institutions and school districts and shows increases in test scores when students had
an additional hour of daylight; however, students should have an additional hour of daylight
consistently throughout the year, not simply on exam days, in order for them to be impacted entirely
(Heissel and Norris). The reason being is students have "dips" in their sleep–wake cycles that cause

27. Free Time For Students In High School And College
Over half of the students in the United States struggle with grades, thus resulting in an unhappy
experience in high school and college. Patience, effort, and preparation for needs are an essential
key to knowledge and success. Before such steps can be followed, a student must set self–goals of
what they desire to achieve in school over a period of time. Not all students are born naturally gifted
with intelligence in this universe, but following the most helpful directions in life will in no doubt
assist any lost student in achieving his or her self–desire. The negligence of studying and completing
homework is the first and main reason why students continue to struggle with their grades and life in
general. Free time between classes and after school should contribute towards studying and
homework instead of time to associate with friends and/or a significant other. Of course, students do
not have to shelter themselves away from what makes them most happy, however, free time should
be divided up so that a proper amount is spent preparing for tests or finishing assignments. Just one
to two hours a day spent studying can boost a grade from a seventy percent to a ninety percent, and
this will significantly relieve stress and boost confidence.

also desire to divide it up between extracurricular activities and/or a job. Most people want to

29. High School Is A Time Of Great Fun
Sophomore year at my school, Greenbrier School District, is our first year of High School. We are
the dreaded underclassman of the school. We get the boos at the pep–rallys, we get the worst lunch

Everyone experiences in their life the time of being the "Sophomore" the rookie and when you mess
up at that time it seems to affect you more than any other time. We feel the most vulnerable when
we are the weaker people, even the smallest things seem to hurt us the most.
High School is suppose to be a time of great fun. In my small town of Greenbrier, Arkansas with a
population of about five thousand people, our Friday night sports are everything. First Security, a
local bank, tailgates before most games, people line up to get good seats, they deck out in "panther"
gear, and everyone is always smiling and having a good time. At school before the games we have
huge pep–rally's where all 3 grades come together and yell and support the Panthers. A person from
the team playing that night speaks about the games and how hard everyone has worked for tonight.

33. Analysis Of Fast Times At Ridgemont High
In Fast Times at Ridgemont High, characters engage in many expressive relationships that weaken
the status hierarchy often found in the high school setting. "The mall is the common gathering place
for characters outside of school, and status relations are easily visible here" (Heckerling, 1982).
Since the mall is such an integral part of the film, one witnesses the shift of status relations over
time. According to a 2000 study, "For these young people the mall was a social magnet that drew
them away from the hassles encountered at home and school towards a haven of warmth and safety.
He describes the mall as a kind of 'neutral ground'" (Matthews, 2000). Mark 'Rat' Ratner works in
the mall as 'assistant to the assistant manager' at the movie theater, which is clearly not the most
prestigious job on that side of the mall. Stacy Hamilton, on the other hand, works at Perry's Pizza
Parlor, a seemingly higher–ranked job. With a bit of help from Damone, however, Mark approaches
Stacy at the mall to ask her on a date. This begins the friendship and future romance between them,
establishing an expressive relationship that connects the slightly awkward Mark to the popular
Stacy. The strict status hierarchy associated with high schools is diminished when popular
individuals like Stacy do not mind interacting with and creating strong relationships with those
viewed as less popular, such as Mark. Additionally, Stacy's brother Brad contributes to the

Emily Sellers
Composition 1301–332
Mrs. Kinkead
24 September 2017 Wasted time in High School
Public high schools tend to waste a lot of time in class doing things that aren't related to school at
all. It has been reported that in many schools, teachers make students do chores for them for extra
credit points, while others are learning new things. Jay Mathews wrote "A startling waste of
precious classroom time," published in 2014 in the Washington Post, and he argues that so much
time is wasted in low–income schools due to teachers and it makes it very difficult for students to
learn in that environment. Mathews begins to establish pathos by stating the names of two girls that
go to Compton High School and want to learn, but their school is unable to give them the education
they desire. Mathews established ethos a little later in his article by stating facts about programs he
has encountered with inner city schools; however, toward the end of his article, he uses facts to
establish logos, which is the appeal of logic, while stating that schools have been sued because low–
income students have not been given the right education.
Mathews explains that "Wasting time is common in the nation's low–income schools. Class
schedules can be a mess at the beginning of the year, forcing students to wait days in the library for
their assignments" (Mathews). Mathews establishes ethos through stating the facts of wasted time in
low–income schools. Mathews states that at Compton High

39. High School Start Time Essay
School Start Time
High school students spend seven hours a day in school, five days a week. To put this into a greater
perspective that is 35 hours a week, 154 hours a month and approximately 1,358 hours a year.
Numerous high school students feel that delaying the school start time by one hour would benefit
their grades and mood because of sleep gained. It is important for those challenging the current start
time to take into consideration that one who spends 35 hours a week in school may be sleep
deprived due to other reasons, such as time management. High school starting an hour later would

extra activities. There are various alternatives for tired students other than a later start time.
In Douglas County most of the high schools are currently start at 7:45 am and end at 2:50 pm. This
start time is very helpful to parents that drop off their children at school before work. According to
the U.S. Department of Labor most Americans that work full time arrive to work at eight o'clock in
the morning. With school starting an hour later most working parents would find transporting their
children to school onerous because they would already be at work. Of course, one could argue that
students could drive themselves or take the bus. Though, not all families can afford a third car for
their teenager. According to Heritage.org 31 percent of American families have two or more

41. High School Is The Best Time Of My Life
My time throughout high school was the best time of my life, I wished I would have realized sooner
how terrible of a student I was. I look back and think how much harder I could have tried, things I
could have done different, and how it has changed me. I don't have a single regret, because not only
was it a lesson learned but it was humorous along the way. I was never the best person at studying,
in fact I was terrible at it. I am the biggest procrastinator, the phrase, "due tomorrow, do tomorrow" I
know all too well. I knew I would have an upcoming assignment due, a test to study for, and I would
still wait until the very last second to get it done it never failed. While the teacher was going around
giving points for homework I was still scrambling to get all of mine complete. I would always get
the question "Corey, did you forget to do your homework? Last minute, scrambling to get it done?" I
didn't realize until much later how important it is to limit yourself from distractions. One of the
funniest moments I can remember was an afternoon in my English class. I sat right beside of my
best friend Emily, sometimes I wonder how she done it, how she put up with me and my
shenanigans. There wasn't a time I wasn't asking her for answers to a test, or an assignment, or just
talking while distracting her at the same time. This one day in particular I was really out of it, my
teacher was instructing and here I am just completing disregarding what she was saying. It was after

43. High School Years Were The Worst Time For Me
High school years were the worst time for me. I have absolutely no idea how I made it through to
graduation, but I did. My learning style was to cram everything in my mind right before a test
because my mentality was that if I did that I would recall everything. Well, I was wrong. School
work has always been difficult for me because I find it hard to pay attention and do not understand
everything I am being told. I have this learning block that does not allow me to process information
until I understand every thought or action behind it and if I do not comprehend the details then the
information is not retained. That might be a side effect of my traumatic brain injury or it could just
be because of how I was raised or my own personal way of thinking, whatever the case may be, the
disability is tormenting.
Additionally, when I was little my parents and I continuously got into fights about schoolwork. I
could never explain why my grades were as low as they were or why I still needed help with
homework even after they clarified it fifteen times. In middle school it took me four hours to do
thirty minutes' worth of homework because I was not retaining what I had learned in class. My dad
asked me how it was possible for me to know every lyric known to mankind but remembering my
multiplication tables was a struggle. Thus, bringing me to the discovery of a learning style known as
kinesthetic. Upon this detection I decided to research what that meant. Astonishingly it is very

45. School Start Times And High Quality Sleep
The American education system is diverse and unique, and one aspect that varies wildly across the
country is school start times. Deciding the start times for schools is dependent on many factors
including bus schedules (Edwards, 2012), biological development (Borlase, Gander, & Gibson,
2013; Perkinson–Gloor, Lemola, & Grob, 2013), and parental preference (Edwards, 2012;
Perkinson–Gloor et al., 2013). School start times are considered one aspect that can affect sleep
duration, since they affect wake time. Adequate, high quality sleep is extremely important for
adolescents and inadequate sleep can lead to a number of negative outcomes including poorer
physical and mental health, as well as poorer academic performance (Borlase et al., 2013; Edwards,
2012; Keller, Smith, Gilbert, Bi, Haak, & Buckhalt, 2015; Paksarian, Rudolph, Jian–Ping, &
Merikangas, 2015; Perkinson–Gloor, et al., 2013). Therefore, school start times are important to the
field of education, because start times affect sleep and sleep, or lack thereof, can affect cognitive
ability and performance. We are always looking to improve our schools and better educate our
children, and the adjustment of the start time is a small change that may have a big impact.
Overall, the results of these studies suggest that early school start times are detrimental to all
students, as elementary, middle, and high school students were examined in at least one of the five
studies. Students at schools with early school start times

47. High School : The Best Of Times
"High school: the best of times, the worst of times!" Schools today are vastly different from the
schools that our parents attended or in some cases even the ones we attended. In fact, racism,
violence, and abuse are just some of the barriers that students and teachers face throughout their day
at most high schools across America. However, we have to understand that most of those issues are
caused by the lack of understanding about the diverse group of young adults we see on a daily basis.
My understanding of diversity is different groups of people with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
With this in mind, teachers need to model for students and peers what positive learning communities
look like. One thing that needs to be addressed early ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These students are victims of their environment and yet they seem to be judged as if they have a
choice in their situation. According to Milne and Plourde (2006), these are the students who have
consistent attendance issues and their lifestyles affect how long it will take them to complete their
education. Factors that affect their ability to learn include: little access to educational materials, low
parent involvement, marital conflicts within the home, lack of discipline, lack of parental
involvement, and absent parents. Any one of these issues can cause a child to fail and some kids deal
with more than one of these issues on a daily basis. Another group that is affected by circumstances
out of their control is the English Language Learners. These students not only face the issues that
every high school student faces, but they also have to adjust to the language barrier, which at times
can be insurmountable. These students are placed in general education classes with the same
expectations as their monolingual peers. They are learning the same content and taking the same
standardized tests as every other student. Teachers have to wonder how they can reach these
students who barely understand what they are saying. Perez and Holmes (2010) introduce us to the
several strategies to help our "culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD)" students. Some
suggestions include: building on prior knowledge to help them make connections, teaching them to

Something I chose not to do probably could have made my time in highschool much more fun and
exciting. I decided not to get involved more in high school, maybe it was cause I was nervous to try
new things, and it's made me wonder what else I could have experienced. nI also think that maybe it
would help me get into the college I want to go to if I got more involved. However, I also really like
how my high school years are going for me now, but I feel as if it could have been better. To begin
with, I was a freshman and I felt that I was pretty nervous to join new things my first year in high
school. Maybe this led to me not getting involved my sophomore year either because I was not
comfortable with people in certain clubs or sports. I also felt like I got lazy because of the school
work and dealing with my social life. I also didn't know what I would be interested in, so I did not
think it was necessary to join things I would not have liked. Another reason is that I did not want to
join anything if my friends were not a part of it with me.
As a result, me not becoming more involved in school is one of my favorite regrets. There are a

I would like to start out with a little Bible verse from Proverbs 20:15, it goes like this "There is gold
and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel." This verse is saying
that people are surrounded daily by tons of things that we believe are precious and costly. Yet the
people with real understanding, knowledge, of value are the most precious and rare of all. But what
is real understanding of value? In today's society people are taught to believe that knowledge is
getting a diploma and going to a four–year university. To get your diploma you must make good
grades in school. For college, high test scores and good high school grades are the things that dictate
what college you can get into. But why? Why should a grade in subjects most students don't even

The problem is people don't have enough "game time" for example people don't have enough in

When they have 2 games a week they can only play for a limited time and not have much play time.

The reason this is important is because they players and subs so when someone gets hurt they won't

The Effects of High School Start Times on Teens
According to a 2015 CDC study 72% of high school students felt they were not getting enough
sleep. We've all been there. But many medical associations agree that the effect of prolonged sleep
deprivation could be detrimental to teen health. This is why the AMA suggests that middle schools
and high schools should start no earlier than 8:30 in the morning. Unfortunately, the average starts
time for high–schools is 7:59A.M and for middle schools it's 8:04A.M (NCES).Middle schools and
high schools should follow the AMA's recommendations because it will improve student's health,

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teenagers need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep.
However, only 34% of teens report getting 8 hours of sleep on a school night (Ming, Koransky,
Kang, Buchman, Sarris, and Wagner). If we started schools later student's health would improve. It
could also potentially help prevent some bad conditions that the CDC associates with prolonged
sleep deprivation. People who do not get enough sleep are at a higher risk of diabetes, problems
with obesity and poor mental health. This would also minimize crashes during morning commutes.
This is because many teens drive themselves to school are inexperienced. If they are drowsy when
driving, they could endanger themselves and the people around them. According to an article by
Fred Danner and Barbra Phillips, delaying school start times may decrease the risk of motor vehicle
crashes.
Secondly, many students' academic scores would improve. This is because sleep deprived students
are more likely to have attention and behavior issues. Plus, students will absorb more information in
class because they are more focused or at the very least not falling asleep in class. As a result
students would be more productive and learn the material in class so they will be less likely to pull
all–nighters the night before tests causing students to lose more sleep. This will make the classroom

61. Changing Time In High School
A problem with changing the time that schools starts is parent work schedules. When school starts at
7:30, most parents can see their kids before they go to school. If that time was changed, most
parents won't be able to still drive their kids to school and get to work on time. A main a problem for
parents of young children, who need supervision while getting ready for school and waiting for the
bus. For teenagers, later starting time may lead to more responsibility such as getting themselves up
on their own and getting their own breakfast.
Another issue is bus schedules and other transportation. Lots of school districts use the same buses
to get the elementary and high school students. Delayed school times would affect this because if the
same bus driver drops students off at the high school and then has to pick up elementary school
students. Schools would have to delay both high school times and all elementary schools times or
maybe get more buses to drive the elementary school students. ... Show more content on

Adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily
physical activity, suffer from depressive symptons, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as
drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs. (Schools Start Too Early) Therefore, if we can
make the school start time later, then the students will have more time to sleep which is good for
their health. Some people may argue that students can go to bed earlier so that they can still get
enough sleep. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics states that adolescents have unique
sleep rhythms that make it harder for them to go to sleep and wake up earlier than other people, so
they issued a new policy statement recommending that middle and high schools start class no earlier
than 8:30 a.m. (Strauss) Because of this unique sleep rhythm among teenagers, we need to delay
school start time to give them time to get more sleep and a better health. In addition, making schools
start later can help solve safety issues such as reducing car accidents risks. 2008 Study found that, in
one town, delaying the school day by an hour reduced car crash rates among teens by over 16

67. Effects Of High School Start Time Essay
Several high schools all around the United States start school before the recommended time of 8:30
or later and there is nothing being done to help prevent this. Although it seems that it is just a time,
waking up too early is very detrimental, not only to teenagers, but people of all ages. According to
Zuckerman from the National Center for Health Research, "By 2000, many high schools were
starting at 7:30 or earlier". Waking up at this earliest of times can lead to increased depression, drug
use, obesity, conflict, and car accidents in the average teenager. Simply increasing the start time of
school by a single hour can reduce the rate of the effects stated above by at least 70%. Also,

There are already many campaigns and solutions to help end this problem, however, no person has

leading cause of drug use because drug use is prevented by depression and depression may be
happening because of lack of sleep. Researchers have found that after making the start time of
school more reasonable, the use of drugs decreased and almost disappeared completely. For
example, according to the Teen Rehab Center, people aged 12–20 drink a total of 11% of the
consumed alcohol in the US. However, when teens are less sleep deprived, it may make the
percentage decrease. According to some National data recorded by CASAColumbia, a study found

69. The Habits Of Time Management In High School
Time management had always been a problem for me. Stemming back to high school, I would
procrastinate on everything I had to do. From studying for exams to getting my drivers license,
procrastination always took over my responsibilities. While it was a terrible habit to have, I was able
to bounce back from my stupid mistakes back in high school. This, unfortunately, was not the same
story in college.
In my first quarter at UCSB, I vowed to change my nasty habits of procrastinating on all my
responsibilities. Throughout the course of the quarter, I was doing fairly fine; getting decent grades
on exams, doing my homework, and even finishing readings before they were due. While I was
doing better than I expected, it was primarily due to the fact that I was fairly dedicated to my work,
and not that I was managing my time any better than I did in high school. In other words, I was still
procrastinating, but the topics were not yet too difficult to truly affect my GPA. That is, until my
first finals came around. One thing that future first year students need to understand is that finals
weeks is not just one week; the grind starts on week ten, otherwise known as "dead week". This is
one bit of information that did not come across to me on my first attempt at my college finals. As
one could easily guess, I spent my entire dead week having fun, sleeping, and watching television.

Throughout my time growing up I have had a lot of people tell me that high school will be the time

club, yearbook, running for student council, homecoming court, being nominated best personality,
and Distinguished Young Women.
My time in high school have been some of the greatest times I have had thus far, with as little bumps

student was not trying my hardest. I never really had to try much in elementary and middle school. It
