This project demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses related to elderly transportation accessibility on the University of Georgia's campus. The project described accessible components that the elderly experience while visiting campus. While working as an occupational therapist, I will have to take into account the accessibility offered and work with the patients to restore functional independence in their daily living skills, such as transportation.
1. Strengths
Flashing Pedestrian Crossings
There are many flashing pedestrian crossings across the campus of the University of Georgia.
These alert the drivers coming down the street and allow older individuals to feel safe walking
across the street. The older adults do not feel rushed to get across the street due to being worried
about drivers not seeing them or having enough time to slow down.
Helping Hand
It is important to have handrails to help with guidance and balance for an elderly person. These rails are
scattered around campus to support those walking through campus. Having these rails on inclines and
stairs is important to support those transporting themselves by foot around campus.
2. Informative sign
Some bus stops around campus have these helpful signs. These could be helpful if an elderly student did
not know what bus to get on.
A Place to Rest
Walking around campus can be very tiring. Luckily, UGA has many benches in the shade and in the sun
where elderly could rest if they get too tired walking around.
3. In Case of Emergency
This can be a dangerous crosswalk for elders because there is no ramp for being able to cross here if
needed. The blue sign is there and says in case of emergency or a problem call the number labeled. This is
important in case of an emergency at this crosswalk.
4. Weaknesses
No Plane Train
The University of Georgia buses give no direction to the next stops while on the bus. Without the
app or prior knowledge, it is hard to know where the bus will arrive next. The “Plane Train” in
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport has a train that takes you to different terminals and baggage
claims. On the interior of the train is a map of the direction the train goes and the name of each
stop. The UGA bus system needs this so older individuals will not have to worry about having
gotten on the wrong bus.
OH, WHERE ARE THE DIRECTIONS?
Oh, where are the buses going to be there is no road near here. Where are the bus routes or anything? The
only thing this is helpful for is not getting wet from the rain. Who knows where or when a bus is coming?
5. What do you do here?
For someone that may not be familiar with campus or may not understand the rules, this can be very
dangerous. Why is this here? The railroad is no longer in service but can still be dangerous to cross as it is
unstable. I think that this is dangerous because some people may not understand what to do in this
situation and there is no guidance.
Dangerous Step Down
The roads around UGA’s campus are not structured perfectly. At the end of this curb, the concrete is
starting to break apart. This could be very dangerous for older people as they step down, and could result
in a loss of balance and injury.
