2. When conducting my audience research, I
contacted a people within my age target
audience (15-24) using different
technologies. I could learn from my target
audience what exactly they expect from a
horror film.
3. I heard directly from my target audience, what they would want to see
in a horror film. I made sure to mould my film around their
expectations.
I found out where the favourite sub-genre of horror is for my target
audience and why. This helped me to understand what appeals to
my audience in terms of genre. If they like zombie films, make sure
to include lots of make up and blood, if they prefer psychological,
make sure to include lots of atmospheric music and creepy
mysterious figures.
4. I went further and asked my audience what they would expect from a
psychological horror; as that was my chosen genre. There
responses involved:
• Play on the audiences mind
• Normal person or family experiencing something out f the ordinary
• Unseen horror, fear of the unknown, fear of what you can’t fight
back against
• Tense music, tilting shots, dark gloomy lighting
• Intense moments and special effects
I made sure to include these in my trailer.
5. Lastly, I asked my target audience what they thought was the most
important convention or horror. I received a mixture of comments:
• Creepy antagonist
• Low key lighting
• Sound
Scary sound was seen as the most important convention by 3/5 of my
audience members. They all agreed that sound makes horror more
atmospheric, builds tension and set the right tone. I will took all the
feedback into consideration, especially sound.
