Representation Of African American Race In Movies Essay
Representation of African American Race in Movies Short Paper Two Natarsha Bassett Arth 204
Representation of African American Race in Movies Being an African American requires one to
understand the concept of self–esteem and self–identification. The history of mistreatment of blacks
created a platform for me to stand and express myself without fear of the whites. Notably, self–
belief and knowledge are important factors in establishing one's foundation in the society. As a
young child, my parents inculcated values such as courage, hard work and self–realization and
therefore understood that I had different skin and hair than my white neighbors. This however did
not mean that whites were superior and more intelligent than blacks were. I grew up knowing that I
had the same opportunities as white and therefore developed a strong personality. ... Show more

Understanding one's national identity contributes to patriotism of the country's ways of living and
the laws of the country. Notably, the social construction and factors such as crime and education
inflict the beliefs, values and ways of living hence their national identity. Importantly, exposure to
issues such ethnicity, immigration and globalization affect the national identity of an individual. The
scenes in Love and Basketball reveal the struggles of the majority of the black community and
explain how many people in the area work hard to embrace lifestyle of the whites. The movie
extends the cultural views on blacks as minorities to an important culture in national identity of the
country. The planets of apes however create images of blacks that are culturally and socially
disturbing and increases their views and role in the national government. However, this is reality of
majority of African Americans, who have to fight constantly to fit in the

Raisin In The Sun Compare And Contrast
You know that great feeling When you finally get done with that long book you read and are just
ready to watch the movie but realize the movie is so much different than the book. Although the play
A Raisin in the Sun is similar to the 2008 film A Raisin in the Sun by Kenney Leon with the main
idea of life plans and dreams they are also very different. Teachers must read the play before
watching the movie because it shows the differences in mood changes, character changes and scene
changes. To begin, there are a few similarities between the play and the movie. Both the movie and
the film talk about life plans for the family and their future. The movie and play repeatedly move
back and forth to the play talking abou there deferred dreams. Similar

TV Show Scandal Analysis
Why the TV Show Scandal is Relevant to Black Actresses Actress DeWanda Wise shared how the
evolution of black women in both television and film struck her and how she always saw actress
Kerry Washington and her show Scandal as the turning point. According to Wise, when Scandal
premiered in 2012, she noticed how the auditions started to change. She found herself being tested
on a lead character's role and no longer tied to the sidekick role she always auditioned for. When the
show ended after seven seasons, people were hearing about stories on how a number of black
actresses auditioned for the highly coveted role of Olivia Pope on Scandal. The show's creator
Shonda Rhimes confirmed the story on how every black actress wanted to get the role ... Show more

In fact, Gabrielle Union, another actress who auditioned for the role eventually got the lead part of a
television movie called Being Mary Jane. It became the highest rated series on BET. In 2014,
Rhimes once again, cast a black actress for another series. Viola Davis nabbed the role of Annalise
Keating in How to Get Away with Murder. Soon after, even Taraji P. Henson who also auditioned for
Scandal landed her own television series called Empire. Other shows that followed suit included
Queen Sugar starring Rutina Wesley, Bianca Lawson, and Dawn–Lyen Gardner. Regina King also
got her own series, American Crime while Sanaa Lathan grabbed the role in Shots Fired. The trend
for shows with black actresses as the leading role continue to grow. We have Issa Rae on Insecure,
Tracee Ellis Ross for Black–ish, and Yara Shahidi on Grown–ish. All of these black characters and
black actresses on television can thank Olivia Pope for paving way for the entry of female black–led
series. The success of the Scandal will live on the lives of the black actresses on television even as
the show has ended this year. Everyone will remember how the D.C. fixer has created more
opportunities and opened doors for black actresses to show their black girl magic on

A Raisin In The Sun: Play Analysis
A rendition of a play, poem, or piece of music is a performance of it. (Collins n.d.) This assignment
was an interesting review of the three different renditions of "A Raisin in the Sun", a ground
breaking thought provoking play that is relevant to various cultures, genders or groups that are
struggling to fight for their humanity and the play makes us identify our part of the struggle–good or
bad. The first two renditions, the written plan and the digital play had the unique exposure to the
author who was involved and alive to change and explain in real time her intent of the scenes and
interpretation by the actors. In the written version it read as if you were reading a story with a
readable dialogue and description that drew you in to

American Assassin Thesis
When author Vince Flynn lost his life to prostate cancer in 2013, he was the author of 11 books
chronicling the adventures of undercover C.I.A. operative Mitch Rapp. Many of them performed
well on the New York Times Best Sellers List and for 2010's "American Assassin" novel, Flynn
wrote a prequel of sorts, an origin story that took everyone back to the beginning of the series and
detailed Rapp's ascent into the upper reaches of the C.I.A. That prequel serves as the source material
for the first Rapp story to land on the big screen in American Assassin, a new action thriller from
acclaimed director Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger, L.I.E.). Starring Dylan O'Brien in his first
"adult" leading role, the film feels rooted in the 1990s, when generic action movies, featuring
potential new breakout stars paired with actors who had seen better fame and prosperity in years
gone by, lined video store shelves as far as the eye could see. To be ... Show more content on

Once training is complete, Rapp is sent out into the field, Hurley is his support, and we are trying to
stop a nuclear detonation and subsequent World War III. And tonight, I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
In all seriousness, we have all the elements of a movie from 20 years ago and American Assassin
feels dated from the outset. The scene on the beach is violent, jarring, and effective, but what
follows for the next 45 minutes or so is a fitfully boring and insipid tale of scenes we have seen
countless times in other, better movies. Dylan O'Brien is a good actor, but he takes some getting
used to here – buffed up, unpolished, and ready to brawl. Once a potential new women enters the
picture, Annika (Shiva Negar), an agent tasked to help in the operation plan, an attraction is teased
and the movie starts to give us something intriguing to

Raisin In The Sun Comparison
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality (Lennon)". In
Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play, A Raisin in the Sun, the African– American Younger family lives in
a small rugged apartment. They are faced with the struggles of racism, self–pride, and dreams
deferred. Young Walter Lee Younger dreams of being a respectable man able to provide for his
family but is set back by his family's heritage and lack of wealth. Hansberry's renowned play has
been transformed into an ABC production, in which, she would have likely praised. Although her
play was altered, the movie symbolized everything Hansberry stood for. Kenny Leon's recreation of
A Raisin in the Sun evolved Hansberry's masterpiece through the inclusion of developed settings,
themes of money versus pride, and characters played by astounding actors. ... Show more content on

In the story, the characters are placed in many different settings, such as the Clybourne Park house,
the Green Lantern bar, and the back room abortion clinic (Lloyd). Not only were new scenes added,
but some were elevated. The original scenes that take place in the dreary tarnished apartment seem
to portray the apartment to be much less dilapidated than in the play (Toto). Kenny Leonś
representation of A Raisin in the Sun was modified throughout, yet, Hansberryś vision was still
preserved (Taylor).
Walter Lee Younger's yearn for wealth ultimately results in a difficult decision for his family. In the
play, Walter expresses his desires to his son, Travis, in a very important scene that was left out of the
movie. Without the interaction of Walter and Travis, the importance of money is not recreated in the
movie as it was in the play. In A Raisin in the Sun, the Youngers are forced to choose between
financial stability or five generations of pride. As in the play, Leon kept the same idea as Hansberry
by allowing the Youngers to be prideful (A Raisin in the

Prejudice and Discrimination are Alive and Well Essay
Discrimination is Not Dead
White (adj.)– very lightest color, like snow or common salt; colorless Black (adj.)– like coal or soot,
dismal, sullen, hostile, evil, wicked; soiled with dirt
These two words are not only seen as colors to the people of America, but as who a person is,
whether or not they can be trusted, if they are clean, or even if they are considered to be a "heathen",
an unenlightened person who lacks moral principles. From the beginning of time these two colors
have determined your life and what you are able to achieve. Many choose to believe that the times
of inequality are over, and that equality is given to all, but evidence is presented daily that America

In fact, Hattie McDaniel, in 1939, played a maid in Gone With the Wind, and although she was one
of the "stars" of the show, it did not change the assumptions that black women should be
representatives as servants to white women. Some contemporary films that also distorts the view of
black women are, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Passion Fish, these two films "offered viewers
progressive visions of white females, still image black women in the same way– as servants."(568)
"While superficially appearing to present a portrait of racial social equality, mass media actually
work to reinforce assumptions that black folks should always be cast in supporting roles in relation
to white characters."(Hooks 568) Not all roles that have been given to blacks have been those of
servants, however, the roles are always subordinate to whites. Two examples are the black FBI agent
in Silence of the Lambs, whose only job was to boost the ego of the lead female star, Jodie Foster.
Also, Danny Glover is and example, his character in all of the lethal weapon movies, was "to be the
buddy who because he is black and therefore subordinate can never eclipse the white male star."
(Hooks 568) This act of subordination is "made to appear "natural" because most black characters
are consistently portrayed as always a little less ethical and moral than whites, not given to rational
reasonable action."(568) Until America open its eyes

Analysis Of Half A Day By Naguib Mahfouz
Time was a system created to help us organize our lives, but isn't it just a ticking clock telling us
how much we have left? In order to the get the most out of our lives, we use must use it wisely. In
"Half a Day" by Naguib Mahfouz, he shows the reader that you must live life because it will quickly
pass you by. He demonstrates this by having the character experience new things, time passing
quickly, and showing evolution. When the young boy doesn't want to go to school, he is forced to
experience something new. As he approaches the new school he is attending his father tells him
"Today you truly begin life."(Mahfouz 85). The significance of this quote is that the young boy is
trying something new. If he wouldn't push himself to experience this new thing, he wouldn't be
taking advantage and using what all life has to offer. "Go in by yourself."(Mahfouz 85) says his
father. Because his father is trying to push him to do new things, this shows that the author was
trying to convey that you have to venture out, even if on you own. You have to experience new
things to truly live life before the clock stops ticking and you run out of time. "Dry your tears and
face life joyfully."(Mahfouz 86). When one of the woman at the new school make this comment, it
shows the young boy that he has to face life and enjoy it rather than shy away from the new things.
She direct states that you must live "joyfully", so that shows me that the author wanted the boy to
realize he must live life

Title IX (9) Essay
Introduction " No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from
participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education
program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance (Patricia, 1977, p. 15)."
What you have just read above is the "Prohibition of Sex
Discrimination", also known as Title IX. Title IX has been effective in the realm of education for
nearly three decades, but has been a source a controversy in collegiate sports. Since the beginning of
time, women were believed to be inferior to men in every way. Women were socialized to bear
children and take care of the household when, and only when, the men were out hunting. ... Show

Each university had to cut a men's athletic program of unlimited funding and Title IX. Title IX has
also hit close to home. Cal Poly has felt the affects of Title IX. The most devastating being the
incident with John Madden donating $10 million to Cal Poly football. Madden was unable to give
his donation just to football. Administration said it would be divided up evenly among all sports.
Madden was so upset with this, he severed all ties with the university. This was a huge let down.
The money John Madden nearly donated would have been used to rebuild Mustang Stadium and the
athletic weight room. All athletic programs at Cal Poly, not to mention the local high school
championship games, use both of these facilities. This money would have benefited Cal Poly as well
as the community. Yes, the left over funds were for the football program to help with scholarships
and equipment. Other Cal Poly women's sports were allowed to receive donations from alumni, but
not football, because of the size of the donation. It is not the football program's fault, they happen to
have one of the most famous football icons of all time as alumni. The amount of the donation should
have nothing to do with whether or not a team is able to accept a donation. Title IX presence in a
college setting is well known, but women athlete do not have the best opportunities after their
collegiate careers to move up into the

Raisin In The Sun Comparison
The significance behind Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun was it was the first play
made by a black woman to be produced on Broadway. The play was written to create a picture of the
lives of a black family struggling everyday to make it in life. The play making different impacts on
those who viewed it led to three remakes of the work. 1961 produced the remake with the original
cast of the play with the script written by Lorraine Hansberry herself. The next adaptation would be
the 1989 version which was written in honor of the 25th anniversary of the original play. The last
adaptation of the play A Raisin in the Sun would be in 2008 written by Parris Qualles completely

The remakes are not changing the story itself, but are providing different aspects of the story. The
similarities of the original play and the 2008 remake are found in the plots of the story, symbolism
throughout the story, thematic importance, and character emotional significance. The head of the
Younger Family is Lena mother of Walter Lee and Beneatha. Ruth is Walter Lee's wife and Travis is
their son finishing the main cast of the play. Lena the head of the family a role that is a major part of
the feminist role, as well as her daughter Beneatha Hansberry's most intriguing character, and
brother Walter a man that feels he must do anything necessary to provide for his family. The 1961
play opened displaying the living arrangements of the Youngers, and opening up with confrontation
between Walter and Ruth. Walter is well aware that the insurance money will be arriving soon, and
he wants Ruth to pitch the idea to Lena about investing the money. The response he gets from Ruth
isn't what Walter wanted to hear so he states "That's what's wrong with the coloured woman. You
don't build your men up.Make them feel they're somebody and can do something. There are
coloured men who do things. No thanks to the coloured woman."(Hansberry

Black Masculinity In Love And Basketball By Mark Anthony Neal
My film analysis is about the film Love & Basketball. This film includes some examples of what we
have talked about in class. Controlling images and black masculinity are two topics that come to
mind when I watched this film. Controlling images are images in which hold black women into four
categories: "mammies, matriarchs, welfare recipients, and hot mommas". In the Black masculinity
case, Mark Anthony Neal's "New Black Man" brings up Black Masculinity when he talks about the
"strong black man."
The film, Love & Basketball, is about two people, whom which lived next door to each other, name
Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps). They both had a dream of playing
basketball in the NBA. Monica's road to that dream would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Quincy is a guy that is very good in basketball and whom, which looks up to his father, Zeke
McCall (Dennis Haysbert). For most of the film, the notion that the "strong black man" affected
Quincy, which is discussed in Mark Anthony Neal's book "New Black Man", is true. Quincy wanted
to be just like his father and play in the NBA. Zeke, however, was messing around on Quincy's
mother, Nona McCall (Debbi Morgan) and the situation affected Quincy horribly. His parents would
get a divorce and during that process Quincy's play in basketball fell off. He played terrible in his
final games at University of Southern California, which led to him going in the draft. Once the star
on his high school basketball team and a star at USC in the early part of his freshman season,
Quincy found himself bouncing around the NBA from team to team, trying to find a team for him to
stay on. The effect that Zeke had on Quincy was tremendous and the fact that he cheated on his wife
hurt Quincy deeply. Zeke's inconsideration towards his family led him to cheating and his family's
break up. In Neal's book, he basically says the typical "strong black man" today is not good for
black people and that it should be changed. Quincy's father falls into the category of being a "strong
black man" because of his role of being a father towards Quincy. He was not fulfilling his role well
as a father; rather, he was more of a provider for the family

Should The Government Carry A Concealed Weapon Affect Our...
When a matter of seconds count between living and dying; the only option is living. Gun control has
evolved tremendously over the years. First guns were prohibited. However, now the use of guns is
permitted in several states and countries. Different people use guns for different reasons, whether
they are good reasons or bad reasons. In my opinion the right to carry a concealed weapon has saved
lives. The momentous of gun control is prodigious. There have been many situations where the use
of a gun has had a major impact on one's life. When someone is languished or going through a great
cause of tribulation one's first instinct is to regress to safety. On an early Wednesday morning, a

In The Perfect Guy, actress Sanaa Lathan was placed in an undesirable situation with actor Michael
Ealy. Ealy was hidden in Lathan's home upon her arrival. However, Lathan had already expected
Ealy, so earlier that day she went out and purchased a gun. As Lathan found Ealy they immediately
got into a physical altercation. Lathan held Ealy at gun point and told Ealy you have three warnings

Lathan in her own home. So Lathan shot Ealy once with the warning shot, and she shot again until
all warning shots were gone. Ealy suspected Lathan to not shoot anymore so there he was still in her
house jumping on her trying to forcibly hurt her. So Lathan shot one last time and that last shot
killed Ealy. Not only those the right to carry to a concealed weapon take place in real life, but there
are also situations in movies where having that right is as much as important as the next. Lathan had

Textual Analysis Of The Perfect Guy
The Perfect Guy (2015), by David M. Rosenthal, was a very interesting movie. The main characters
who makes the movie interesting are: Leah, who was plays by Sanaa Lathan; Carter, who was plays
by Michael Ealy; and Dave, who was plays by Morris Chestnut. Of course, there are more
characters within the film, but the story was mainly about the three listed above. In other words, the
story was mainly about Leah, who was a professional woman that was dating Dave for two years,
who wants to take his time with her, he does not want to get married or have kids at the moment.
Leah leaves her boyfriend for two years, Dave, and starts dating Carter, whom she passionately gets
involve with who seems almost too good to be true. The two things that I will be critiquing about the
film are: the actors and the editing. To being with, the characters plays their roles comfortably which
makes the movie look realistic. Leah and Dave plays as a couple as well as Leah and Carter. ...

One example of montage was when previews of the new movie shows the viewers that Carter was
under Leah's bed while she was lying down with her eyes open. However, when viewers goes to the
movies and see the film, that one particular scene actually takes place when Carter was under Leah's
bed, but she was having sexually pleasures with Dave. Another example of montage was when the
viewer's sees was when Leah takes a steaming shower, Carter was in her house and puts his hands
on the shower glass. However, when viewers goes to see the film, Leah and Dave was taking a
shower together and Carter appears in the bathroom and puts his hand on the glass. The commercial
and the actual film has an extraordinary way to prank viewer's minds because of the two examples
above. I personally think that Sobel work was indescribable because the way he mise–en–scene all

mass commication and how it affects todays youth Essay
From Eminem's hardcore explicit lyrics, to Lil Kim's outrageous outfits to the late Tupac Shakur's

contain violent messages that parents fear are encouraging youth to become violent. The media has a

women and their promotion of violence. The main concern is how rap is influencing today,
particularly towards the youth community, and the answer can be found in the media. There are a lot

The dance known as breaking, which was influenced by earlier dances know as locking and popping
(these dances required a lot of body control, mainly in the arms, legs, and torso) were established in

subculture (George, 133).
The next big wave in the subculture behind rap music itself was DJing. The ability to mix music on
a machine and scratch records was a phenomenon in itself. Rap music in the industry was nothing
without a beat, and in order for the song to be a hit, the beat must carry the lyrics. Many of the beats
at the time were fast pounding bah–bum–bah rhythms. DJing led to another culture in rap, which
was beat boxing. Beat boxing was when a person made their voice sound like the beat in the song.
Rhazzel, is not only famous for being a DJ, but also for beat boxing. Many times during a concert,
he would just stop the music and beat box the melody. As a result of this influx of energy towards

Essay on Terry McMillan's Women
Terry McMillan's Women
Terry McMillan grabs her audience's attention by filling her books with romance, tension, and sex:
"...it's the roiling currents among family, friends and lovers that McMillan is most comfortable
writing about" (Skow 77). Her customary characters are strong African–American women who are
well off; many have jobs, families, and security. Although these women seemingly have all these
necessities, they long for more. As they experience life, they embark on an "eternal search for

Friends' input can be more stressful than helpful.
Another bond that may provide satisfaction is that between mother and child. Children provide a
connection and provide an outlet for one's love. This relationship gives the women a sense of
security. The mothers in McMillan's books receivepartial completeness from their relationships with
their children. Bernadine, in Waiting to Exhale, has two children. She gets joy out of motherhood
but also feels the burden of raising them. Bernadine knew that her husband wanted children just out
of obligation to fulfill the American Dream and be more like those in the white community. Her
husband's desires ultimately determined her life:
He wouldn't let you put them in day care, because he thought those places weredangerous.
So you spent your afternoon taking John Junior to piano lessons, karate . . . . He hadyou convinced
you that being a good mother meant staying at home with the children until they were at least school
age. (31)
When he asked for a third child, Bernadine took her needs into consideration and refused. She is
proud of her children, who add value to her life, but their needs also contribute to the obstacles
preventing her from starting her own catering services, and fulfilling one of her own dreams.

Representation Of African American Race In Movies Essay

  • 1. Representation Of African American Race In Movies Essay Representation of African American Race in Movies Short Paper Two Natarsha Bassett Arth 204 Representation of African American Race in Movies Being an African American requires one to understand the concept of self–esteem and self–identification. The history of mistreatment of blacks created a platform for me to stand and express myself without fear of the whites. Notably, self– belief and knowledge are important factors in establishing one's foundation in the society. As a young child, my parents inculcated values such as courage, hard work and self–realization and therefore understood that I had different skin and hair than my white neighbors. This however did not mean that whites were superior and more intelligent than blacks were. I grew up knowing that I had the same opportunities as white and therefore developed a strong personality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raisin In The Sun Compare And Contrast You know that great feeling When you finally get done with that long book you read and are just ready to watch the movie but realize the movie is so much different than the book. Although the play A Raisin in the Sun is similar to the 2008 film A Raisin in the Sun by Kenney Leon with the main idea of life plans and dreams they are also very different. Teachers must read the play before watching the movie because it shows the differences in mood changes, character changes and scene changes. To begin, there are a few similarities between the play and the movie. Both the movie and the film talk about life plans for the family and their future. The movie and play repeatedly move back and forth to the play talking abou there deferred dreams. Similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. TV Show Scandal Analysis Why the TV Show Scandal is Relevant to Black Actresses Actress DeWanda Wise shared how the evolution of black women in both television and film struck her and how she always saw actress Kerry Washington and her show Scandal as the turning point. According to Wise, when Scandal premiered in 2012, she noticed how the auditions started to change. She found herself being tested on a lead character's role and no longer tied to the sidekick role she always auditioned for. When the show ended after seven seasons, people were hearing about stories on how a number of black actresses auditioned for the highly coveted role of Olivia Pope on Scandal. The show's creator Shonda Rhimes confirmed the story on how every black actress wanted to get the role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, Gabrielle Union, another actress who auditioned for the role eventually got the lead part of a television movie called Being Mary Jane. It became the highest rated series on BET. In 2014, Rhimes once again, cast a black actress for another series. Viola Davis nabbed the role of Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder. Soon after, even Taraji P. Henson who also auditioned for Scandal landed her own television series called Empire. Other shows that followed suit included Queen Sugar starring Rutina Wesley, Bianca Lawson, and Dawn–Lyen Gardner. Regina King also got her own series, American Crime while Sanaa Lathan grabbed the role in Shots Fired. The trend for shows with black actresses as the leading role continue to grow. We have Issa Rae on Insecure, Tracee Ellis Ross for Black–ish, and Yara Shahidi on Grown–ish. All of these black characters and black actresses on television can thank Olivia Pope for paving way for the entry of female black–led series. The success of the Scandal will live on the lives of the black actresses on television even as the show has ended this year. This assignment was an interesting review of the three different renditions of "A Raisin in the Sun", a ground breaking thought provoking play that is relevant to various cultures, genders or groups that are struggling to fight for their humanity and the play makes us identify our part of the struggle–good or bad. The first two renditions, the written plan and the digital play had the unique exposure to the author who was involved and alive to change and explain in real time her intent of the scenes and interpretation by the actors. • 11. American Assassin Thesis When author Vince Flynn lost his life to prostate cancer in 2013, he was the author of 11 books chronicling the adventures of undercover C.I.A. operative Mitch Rapp. Many of them performed well on the New York Times Best Sellers List and for 2010's "American Assassin" novel, Flynn wrote a prequel of sorts, an origin story that took everyone back to the beginning of the series and detailed Rapp's ascent into the upper reaches of the C.I.A. That prequel serves as the source material for the first Rapp story to land on the big screen in American Assassin, a new action thriller from acclaimed director Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger, L.I.E.). Starring Dylan O'Brien in his first "adult" leading role, the film feels rooted in the 1990s, when generic action movies, featuring potential new breakout stars paired with actors who had seen better fame and prosperity in years gone by, lined video store shelves as far as the eye could see. Once training is complete, Rapp is sent out into the field, Hurley is his support, and we are trying to stop a nuclear detonation and subsequent World War III. And tonight, I'm gonna party like it's 1999. In all seriousness, we have all the elements of a movie from 20 years ago and American Assassin feels dated from the outset. The scene on the beach is violent, jarring, and effective, but what follows for the next 45 minutes or so is a fitfully boring and insipid tale of scenes we have seen countless times in other, better movies. Dylan O'Brien is a good actor, but he takes some getting used to here – buffed up, unpolished, and ready to brawl. Once a potential new women enters the picture, Annika (Shiva Negar), an agent tasked to help in the operation plan, an attraction is teased and the movie starts to give us something intriguing to ... • 13. Raisin In The Sun Comparison "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality (Lennon)". In Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play, A Raisin in the Sun, the African– American Younger family lives in a small rugged apartment. They are faced with the struggles of racism, self–pride, and dreams deferred. Young Walter Lee Younger dreams of being a respectable man able to provide for his family but is set back by his family's heritage and lack of wealth. Hansberry's renowned play has been transformed into an ABC production, in which, she would have likely praised. Although her play was altered, the movie symbolized everything Hansberry stood for. Kenny Leon's recreation of A Raisin in the Sun evolved Hansberry's masterpiece through the inclusion of developed settings, themes of money versus pride, and characters played by astounding actors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the story, the characters are placed in many different settings, such as the Clybourne Park house, the Green Lantern bar, and the back room abortion clinic (Lloyd). Not only were new scenes added, but some were elevated. The original scenes that take place in the dreary tarnished apartment seem to portray the apartment to be much less dilapidated than in the play (Toto). Kenny Leonś representation of A Raisin in the Sun was modified throughout, yet, Hansberryś vision was still preserved (Taylor). Walter Lee Younger's yearn for wealth ultimately results in a difficult decision for his family. In the play, Walter expresses his desires to his son, Travis, in a very important scene that was left out of the movie. Without the interaction of Walter and Travis, the importance of money is not recreated in the movie as it was in the play. In A Raisin in the Sun, the Youngers are forced to choose between financial stability or five generations of pride. In fact, Hattie McDaniel, in 1939, played a maid in Gone With the Wind, and although she was one of the "stars" of the show, it did not change the assumptions that black women should be representatives as servants to white women. Some contemporary films that also distorts the view of black women are, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Passion Fish, these two films "offered viewers progressive visions of white females, still image black women in the same way– as servants."(568) "While superficially appearing to present a portrait of racial social equality, mass media actually work to reinforce assumptions that black folks should always be cast in supporting roles in relation to white characters."(Hooks 568) Not all roles that have been given to blacks have been those of servants, however, the roles are always subordinate to whites. Two examples are the black FBI agent in Silence of the Lambs, whose only job was to boost the ego of the lead female star, Jodie Foster. Also, Danny Glover is and example, his character in all of the lethal weapon movies, was "to be the buddy who because he is black and therefore subordinate can never eclipse the white male star." • 17. Analysis Of Half A Day By Naguib Mahfouz Time was a system created to help us organize our lives, but isn't it just a ticking clock telling us how much we have left? In order to the get the most out of our lives, we use must use it wisely. In "Half a Day" by Naguib Mahfouz, he shows the reader that you must live life because it will quickly pass you by. He demonstrates this by having the character experience new things, time passing quickly, and showing evolution. When the young boy doesn't want to go to school, he is forced to experience something new. As he approaches the new school he is attending his father tells him "Today you truly begin life."(Mahfouz 85). The significance of this quote is that the young boy is trying something new. If he wouldn't push himself to experience this new thing, he wouldn't be taking advantage and using what all life has to offer. "Go in by yourself."(Mahfouz 85) says his father. Because his father is trying to push him to do new things, this shows that the author was trying to convey that you have to venture out, even if on you own. You have to experience new things to truly live life before the clock stops ticking and you run out of time. "Dry your tears and face life joyfully."(Mahfouz 86). When one of the woman at the new school make this comment, it shows the young boy that he has to face life and enjoy it rather than shy away from the new things. She direct states that you must live "joyfully", so that shows me that the author wanted the boy to realize he must live life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Title IX (9) Essay Introduction " No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance (Patricia, 1977, p. 15)."      What you have just read above is the "Prohibition of Sex Discrimination", also known as Title IX. Title IX has been effective in the realm of education for nearly three decades, but has been a source a controversy in collegiate sports. Each university had to cut a men's athletic program of unlimited funding and Title IX. Title IX has also hit close to home. Cal Poly has felt the affects of Title IX. The most devastating being the incident with John Madden donating $10 million to Cal Poly football. Madden was unable to give his donation just to football. Administration said it would be divided up evenly among all sports. Madden was so upset with this, he severed all ties with the university. This was a huge let down. The money John Madden nearly donated would have been used to rebuild Mustang Stadium and the athletic weight room. All athletic programs at Cal Poly, not to mention the local high school championship games, use both of these facilities. This money would have benefited Cal Poly as well as the community. Yes, the left over funds were for the football program to help with scholarships and equipment. Other Cal Poly women's sports were allowed to receive donations from alumni, but not football, because of the size of the donation. It is not the football program's fault, they happen to have one of the most famous football icons of all time as alumni. The head of the Younger Family is Lena mother of Walter Lee and Beneatha. Ruth is Walter Lee's wife and Travis is their son finishing the main cast of the play. Lena the head of the family a role that is a major part of the feminist role, as well as her daughter Beneatha Hansberry's most intriguing character, and brother Walter a man that feels he must do anything necessary to provide for his family. The 1961 play opened displaying the living arrangements of the Youngers, and opening up with confrontation between Walter and Ruth. Walter is well aware that the insurance money will be arriving soon, and he wants Ruth to pitch the idea to Lena about investing the money. The response he gets from Ruth isn't what Walter wanted to hear so he states "That's what's wrong with the coloured woman. You don't build your men up.Make them feel they're somebody and can do something. • 23. Black Masculinity In Love And Basketball By Mark Anthony Neal My film analysis is about the film Love & Basketball. This film includes some examples of what we have talked about in class. Controlling images and black masculinity are two topics that come to mind when I watched this film. Controlling images are images in which hold black women into four categories: "mammies, matriarchs, welfare recipients, and hot mommas". In the Black masculinity case, Mark Anthony Neal's "New Black Man" brings up Black Masculinity when he talks about the "strong black man." The film, Love & Basketball, is about two people, whom which lived next door to each other, name Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps). They both had a dream of playing basketball in the NBA. Monica's road to that dream would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Quincy is a guy that is very good in basketball and whom, which looks up to his father, Zeke McCall (Dennis Haysbert). For most of the film, the notion that the "strong black man" affected Quincy, which is discussed in Mark Anthony Neal's book "New Black Man", is true. Quincy wanted to be just like his father and play in the NBA. Zeke, however, was messing around on Quincy's mother, Nona McCall (Debbi Morgan) and the situation affected Quincy horribly. His parents would get a divorce and during that process Quincy's play in basketball fell off. He played terrible in his final games at University of Southern California, which led to him going in the draft. Once the star on his high school basketball team and a star at USC in the early part of his freshman season, Quincy found himself bouncing around the NBA from team to team, trying to find a team for him to stay on. The effect that Zeke had on Quincy was tremendous and the fact that he cheated on his wife hurt Quincy deeply. Zeke's inconsideration towards his family led him to cheating and his family's break up. In Neal's book, he basically says the typical "strong black man" today is not good for black people and that it should be changed. Quincy's father falls into the category of being a "strong black man" because of his role of being a father towards Quincy. He was not fulfilling his role well as a father; rather, he was more of a provider for the family ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Should The Government Carry A Concealed Weapon Affect Our... When a matter of seconds count between living and dying; the only option is living. Gun control has evolved tremendously over the years. First guns were prohibited. However, now the use of guns is permitted in several states and countries. Different people use guns for different reasons, whether they are good reasons or bad reasons. In my opinion the right to carry a concealed weapon has saved lives. The momentous of gun control is prodigious. There have been many situations where the use of a gun has had a major impact on one's life. When someone is languished or going through a great cause of tribulation one's first instinct is to regress to safety. On an early Wednesday morning, a fifty–three year old woman was encountered by a strange man, while she was in the shower, with a knife. Immediately the man and the woman engaged in a physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Perfect Guy, actress Sanaa Lathan was placed in an undesirable situation with actor Michael Ealy. Ealy was hidden in Lathan's home upon her arrival. However, Lathan had already expected Ealy, so earlier that day she went out and purchased a gun. As Lathan found Ealy they immediately got into a physical altercation. Lathan held Ealy at gun point and told Ealy you have three warnings get out of my house, but Ealy figured Lathan would not shoot. So he therefore continued harassing Lathan in her own home. So Lathan shot Ealy once with the warning shot, and she shot again until all warning shots were gone. Ealy suspected Lathan to not shoot anymore so there he was still in her house jumping on her trying to forcibly hurt her. So Lathan shot one last time and that last shot killed Ealy. Not only those the right to carry to a concealed weapon take place in real life, but there are also situations in movies where having that right is as much as important as the next. • 27. Textual Analysis Of The Perfect Guy The Perfect Guy (2015), by David M. Rosenthal, was a very interesting movie. The main characters who makes the movie interesting are: Leah, who was plays by Sanaa Lathan; Carter, who was plays by Michael Ealy; and Dave, who was plays by Morris Chestnut. Of course, there are more characters within the film, but the story was mainly about the three listed above. In other words, the story was mainly about Leah, who was a professional woman that was dating Dave for two years, who wants to take his time with her, he does not want to get married or have kids at the moment. Leah leaves her boyfriend for two years, Dave, and starts dating Carter, whom she passionately gets involve with who seems almost too good to be true. The two things that I will be critiquing about the film are: the actors and the editing. To being with, the characters plays their roles comfortably which makes the movie look realistic. Leah and Dave plays as a couple as well as Leah and Carter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of montage was when previews of the new movie shows the viewers that Carter was under Leah's bed while she was lying down with her eyes open. However, when viewers goes to the movies and see the film, that one particular scene actually takes place when Carter was under Leah's bed, but she was having sexually pleasures with Dave. Another example of montage was when the viewer's sees was when Leah takes a steaming shower, Carter was in her house and puts his hands on the shower glass. However, when viewers goes to see the film, Leah and Dave was taking a shower together and Carter appears in the bathroom and puts his hand on the glass. The commercial and the actual film has an extraordinary way to prank viewer's minds because of the two examples above. I personally think that Sobel work was indescribable because the way he mise–en–scene all of the scenes and how the movie was playing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. mass commication and how it affects todays youth Essay From Eminem's hardcore explicit lyrics, to Lil Kim's outrageous outfits to the late Tupac Shakur's "thug life" image, the rap subculture has been under a lot of speculation. Many rappers lyrics contain violent messages that parents fear are encouraging youth to become violent. The media has a field day covering protests against rappers, such as Eminem about their explicit lyrics towards gays, women and their promotion of violence. The main concern is how rap is influencing today, particularly towards the youth community, and the answer can be found in the media. There are a lot of articles, books, movies and documentaries written and produced each year with hip–hop being the main subject. This great plethora of media not only affects the ... The dance known as breaking, which was influenced by earlier dances know as locking and popping (these dances required a lot of body control, mainly in the arms, legs, and torso) were established in L.A. The dances received national exposure on the hit show Soul Train, and ultimately swept the rap subculture (George, 133). The next big wave in the subculture behind rap music itself was DJing. The ability to mix music on a machine and scratch records was a phenomenon in itself. Rap music in the industry was nothing without a beat, and in order for the song to be a hit, the beat must carry the lyrics. Many of the beats at the time were fast pounding bah–bum–bah rhythms. DJing led to another culture in rap, which was beat boxing. Beat boxing was when a person made their voice sound like the beat in the song. Rhazzel, is not only famous for being a DJ, but also for beat boxing. Many times during a concert, he would just stop the music and beat box the melody. As a result of this influx of energy towards the rap subculture and its birth of many other cultures, Tricia Rose quotes: "It was not long before similarly marginalized Black and Hispanic communities in other cities picked up on the t tenor and energy in New York hip hop. • 31. Essay on Terry McMillan's Women Terry McMillan's Women Terry McMillan grabs her audience's attention by filling her books with romance, tension, and sex: "...it's the roiling currents among family, friends and lovers that McMillan is most comfortable writing about" (Skow 77). Her customary characters are strong African–American women who are well off; many have jobs, families, and security. Although these women seemingly have all these necessities, they long for more. As they experience life, they embark on an "eternal search for connection" (Donahue n. pag.). They create bonds with friends, siblings and children, but, above all, McMillan stresses their relationships with men. McMillan's maincharacters need these close ties to other people to survive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Friends' input can be more stressful than helpful. Another bond that may provide satisfaction is that between mother and child. Children provide a connection and provide an outlet for one's love. This relationship gives the women a sense of security. The mothers in McMillan's books receivepartial completeness from their relationships with their children. Bernadine, in Waiting to Exhale, has two children. She gets joy out of motherhood but also feels the burden of raising them. Bernadine knew that her husband wanted children just out of obligation to fulfill the American Dream and be more like those in the white community. Her husband's desires ultimately determined her life: He wouldn't let you put them in day care, because he thought those places weredangerous. So you spent your afternoon taking John Junior to piano lessons, karate . . . . He hadyou convinced you that being a good mother meant staying at home with the children until they were at least school age.
