Pilot testing
1. Pilot testing, monitoring and evaluating the implementationPresentation Transcript
1. In the implementation of thecurriculum, there are processesneeded after it has been written
andbefore it is accepted for finalimplementation. Pilot testing or fieldtry out is one of the
commonpractices of curriculum makers todetermine the strength and theweaknesses of a
written or plannedcurriculum. Likewise monitoring andevaluation of the curriculum are
alsoimportant in the implementation.
2. Whenever a curriculum is written asin books, modules, etc. or the wholecurricular program,
there is a need tohave a try-out or field testing. Thisprocess will gather empirical data
tosupport whether the material or thecurriculum is useful, relevant, reliableand valid.
3. Modification and revision areinherent characteristics of acurriculum. The pilot test or try-out
isa developmental process that givesthe signal as to whether theparticular curriculum can
already beimplemented with confidence. However, as the curriculum isimplemented, there is
a need tocontinuously monitor the process.
4. Monitoring ask the question: How are we doing? Is the curriculum accomplishing its intended
purpose?Monitoring is also important:• To determine if the curriculum is still relevant and
effective• How the curriculum is working• Provides decision on what aspects have to be
retained, improved or modified• Provides decision that would even end or terminate the
program
5. Curriculum evaluation as part oftotal educational evaluation refers toa systematic process of
judging thevalue, effectiveness and adequacy ofa curriculum: its process, product andsetting
which will lead to informeddecision. Evaluation should be usefuland systematic. The
informationgathered should be important for theimprovement of and for final judgmentof
the curriculum being evaluated.
6. In practice, there are two ways ofcurriculum evaluation1. School-based evaluation2.
Accreditation
7. - is an approach to curriculumevaluation which places thecontent, design, operation
andmaintenance of evaluation procedurein the hands of the school personnel. The school
personnel participate inthe planning and conduct of schoolevaluation where the control
andmanagement of the process rest onthe school personnel themselves.
8. This is a voluntary process ofsubmitting a curricular program to anexternal accrediting body
for reviewin any level of education:basic, tertiary or graduate school toassure standard.
Accreditationstudies the statement of theeducational intentions of the schooland affirms a
standard of excellence.
9. Among the many purposes ofaccreditation are to foster excellenceand improve programs.
The curricularaccreditation will assure theacademic community, other agenciesand the
general public that curriculummeets standards comparable to otherexcellent institutions
offering similarprograms.
2. 10. Usually there are ten areas for program accreditation one of which is curriculum and
instructionWhat are the areas of accreditation under Curriculum and Instruction?1.
Curriculum and Program Studies2. Classroom Management3. Instructional Processes or
Methodologies4. Graduation Requirements5. Administrative Support for Effective
Instruction6. Evaluation of Academic Performance of Students
11. Program of studies includes theclusters ofknowledge, skills, attitudes, valuesand experiences
that will provide thestudents at any level with thenecessary competencies for
effectivelearning. A list of subjects or coursesto be taken and arrange in logicalorder
compose the program ofstudies.
12. For effective instruction, the use ofappropriate classroom management issuggested. The
teacher whoimplements the curriculum sees to itthat management of teaching andlearning
in the classroom followsprocedure and guidance to enhanceand create an environment
conduciveto learning. An environmentconducive to learning considers thephysical as well as
the human factors.
13. The decision of choosing and usingthe method of teaching is a crucialfactor in curriculum and
instruction. There are varied methodologies thatare compatible with the differentlearning
style of the students. Theseemerging strategies of teachingfollow principles and theories
thatenhance learning outcomes. Asteachers, there is a need to know notonly the steps or
strategies ofteaching but to understand thepedagogical content knowledge ofeach strategy.
14. Graduation means successfulaccomplishment of the curricularprogram of studies. A student
has toaccomplish its academic program asprescribed in the program of studies. These
requirements are clearlyunderstood upon enrollment incollege by the students and by
theparents for students in theelementary or high school. The graderequirements of each
subjects shouldbe known.
15. A curriculum can be bestimplemented if there is support of theschool administration.
16. In curriculum, it is necessary thatlearning outcomes be evaluated. Afterall the best measure
of a curriculumis the learning outcome of thestudents. The evaluation of
students’performance should make use of validand reliable tools which areperiodically
reviewed and revised.
