The Issue Of Gun Violence
Recently, the SAFE Act, or Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, has sparked a large
debate amongst New York residents. The law, passed January 15th, 2013, created many new
restrictions for gun owners and those looking to purchase guns. Perhaps the most controversial part
of the ordeal was the hasty enactment of the law. Many dispute that it is an infringement on their
constitutional rights. In addition, the State doesn 't have the means to enact many parts of the law.
The law assumes that restricting the physical guns will solve the issue of gun violence; however, the
real issue is mental health, or rather the lack of sufficient mental health care in New York State. The
SAFE Act will do little to prevent further gun violence, instead it will restrict law abiding citizens
from obtaining firearms for hunting or sport, and it continues to enrage many who feel it 's a
violation of their rights. The rushed and possibly unjust implementation of the law was a big
concern to many. Several organizations, including several Sheriff associations, are questioning the
motives of Governor Cuomo and other political officials. Cuomo used a "Message of Necessity",
which bypasses the need for a bill to be in review for three days before it can be voted on (The State
of New York Senate). A "Message of Necessity" is only to be used in an emergency, and, in this

This paper analyses data from several sources to create a more complete understanding of the
arguments for and against increased gun control in the US. While this paper will not cover all of the
factors that should be taken into account it does cover some of the more prominent ones are

Military forces deploy to vastly different environments across the globe. However, two of the most
important discriminating factors which shape how operations are conducted are acceptance and
protection of US forces by the local population. Operational environments are roughly sorted into
two major categories. Permissive environments are locations where the host nation has control of its
territory and supports US operations. Non–permissive environments refer to locations with hostile

legislation or regulations. Many supporters of gun control now feel that any form of legislation will

Europe somehow gain the upper hand so early in history? Gun, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of
Human Societies delivers a clear theory as to why the Europeans were able to conquer almost the
entire world in less then one millennium. Jared Diamond, an esteemed historian takes readers on a
journey through time. He explains that through many different factors and resources, Europe was
able to conquer nearly every civilization due to three major factors, guns, germs, and steel. Diamond
constructs the majority of his arguments based upon the political, economical, and natural
differences and variances between each continent. In the prologue, his friend Yali asks the question,

charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter. The charcoal that's in gunpowder is a "fuel" which means that its sole

Individual Research Report For decades, the United States has been split by a dichotomy over
civilian gun control. "Gun control is the term used to describe how firearms may be legally
produced, sold, and used," (Gale). As stated in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, "'A
well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep
and bear arms, shall not be infringed," (Gottesman/Brown). However, "research seems to indicate
that owning a gun or even just seeing one [can] change how people behave," (Striepe). Studies have
shown that weapons negatively affect the individual's psychological processes. Actions of
aggression or agitation have been shown to increase during experimental situations in which guns
are in view of the subject. The purpose of this project was to determine the extent of how ownership
of guns and other weapons could create conflict, and to propose a solution to minimize these
consequences. By studying how weapons can affect humans intrinsically and psychologically by
slowly changing behaviors and beliefs over time, insight can be gained on the true dangers of gun
ownership. This scientific approach also provided a look at the deeper consequences of civilian
weapon control, allowing for further refinement in the creation of a solution to reverse the effects of

The Death Of A Man
February 15, 2015 Asaad a Lebanese citizen sat to eat lunch with his cousin Walid, uncle, wife, and
children that 's when his uncle decided to go down memory lane and spoke of a conflict that Asaad
and Walid had had over a piece of land previously. One word lead to the other what was a small
intended conversation developed to a fight that ended up with Asaad shooting Walid in his shoulder
and his uncle in the stomach when he was trying to get a hold of him and calm him down. His
children with frightened eyes and his wife 's tears and screams never separated his mind as he was
dragged by the police. After being released several months later Asaad reported that till now that
incident turned his life upside down and the fact that he almost became a murderer for the most
trivial reasons changed his way towards guns and their uses that needed to be sub stained. Let 's
think of a scenario where the same situation occurred but this time Asaad didn't have a gun, wouldn
't that have been a better outcome than 2 people hospitalized and one incarcerated for a few months?

Revolutionary War all the way up through the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Most wars are not fought
out of hatred, but because soldiers are protecting civilians throughout their country. Soldiers stand as
a guard and create a barrier between the enemies and loved ones. The third and fourth longest wars
ever fought by the United States Armed Forces were the Iraq War and World War II. Both wars were
fought with all branches of the military – utilizing significant amounts of Army soldiers and airmen.
To obtain soldiers for World War II the United Stated implemented a draft. Young men hoping for a
particular position in the military specifically volunteered their services for that position, such as
flying in the Army Air Corp. World War II lasted for three years and eight months drafting
approximately ten million men into the military. These soldiers were from all walks of life, all parts
of the country, and ranged from eighteen to twenty–five years old.
Contrary to World War II, the Iraq War did not have a draft to fill its ranks with soldiers. This war

Will outlawing handguns make the United States a safer home for its citizens? Due to random
shootings and gun related massacres that have occurred in public places such as schools, many
people believe so (Richman). Although this is a major problem that needs to be dealt with, artilleries

The way that weapons were depicted in the book is that they were a destructive force to be reckoned

he or she will never compromise their ethics for any job. The thought is usually that they will come
out and change the world. Then reality strikes once he or she begins looking for a job. Jobs are scare
these days, and he or she ends of compromising himself or herself to keep the job they thought they
could change the world with. Then when facing a dilemma at work, which he or she never thought

A teenager who has a gun will feel driven to use the weapon whenever they can, (Child.net, 2011).
When explaining this fact to the mother, she does not seem to fear him. I suggested to her that it
may not be a safe situation for her, and she must think of her own safety as well as Joe's safety. If
Joe is not around the home with the gun, he cannot hurt anyone with it. I suggested the woman at the
very least go home first and search the house herself. She would not do as I suggest. Personally, I

James H. Burton, a master of arms, made a few alterations such as slightly lengthening the bullet
and thinning the walls of the hollow base. These alterations made the minie` ball much easier and

college campuses pose a greater threat than to protect its students and faculty? College campuses are

Ranged Weapons From ancient to modern times, we have always used some sort of ranged weapon.
As technology advances, so does weapons. War fuels the research for weapons, and we would not
have the weapons we have today if it was not for mankind's violent nature. There were many
different types of weapons, and one major type was the bow and arrow. A bow was made for
projecting an arrow a far distance. They were a huge help in ancient wars because they provided
ranged combat. Traditional longbows are made from a single natural piece of wood ("Medieval
Weapons" 19). The bow uses a strong flexible string to project the arrow. The force created by the
bow is powered by the bows elasticity ("Medieval Weapons" 18). The design of the bow has
changed throughout time from being just a simple piece of wood to highly flexible metal. Bows
have been used for thousands of years, for hunting and warfare ("Medieval Weapons" 19).
Crossbows were very similar to the bow; in fact a crossbow was literally a bow on a stock
("Medieval Weapons" 21). The strings on a crossbow were stronger than that of a bow and they

The first types of "useful" throwable weapons were throwing axes. A Francisca is a small axe used
to throw at the enemy. They were mostly used during the Middle Ages. The Francisca was
eventually upgraded to a thicker design with sharp blades on each side ("Medieval Weapons" 18).
Another famous thrown weapon was the javelin. A javelin is a small spear that was thrown a
moderate distance. The javelin was thrown by hand, and it was mostly used throughout medieval

How Do Knights Protect Their Weapons
When knights needed to defend themselves in battle, using the right weapon at the right time was
extremely important as well as what armour they wore. Longswords were used to slash and jab
while still being viable to use with one hand, while plate armour protected against those types of
attacks. Projectile based weapons could engage on the enemy from a distance, but with the sacrifice
of guaranteed damage. Most knights carried at least a sword into battle, and long ranged weapons
were commonly used in sieging castles. Although all weapons were used to protect the user in a
general aspect, there is one weapon that was arguably the best to use in most situations. Bladed
weapons were used to engage enemies at a close range to inflict stabbing and slashing wounds. They
usually consisted of a blade around 30" at minimum with some form of hand guard. Most knights

Early knights wore a type of armour called chainmail, which mainly protected against slashes and
jabs. Chainmail is made up of small metal links formed together to make a mesh which was very
effective and lightweight. Although chainmail was great at being versatile and lightweight, it could
not protect against weapons like high velocity arrows or jabs from horseback however. Later knights
had access to a much heavier type of armour called plate armour. This type of armour was made up
of strong metal pieces that surrounded the body nearly completely and was followed up with
chainmail under it. This armour would protect against nearly all attacks and could be made light

Scholars have often debated whether guns influence an individual to commit a violence act. It is
hypothesized that an individual in the presence of a firearm, has an increased likelihood of
exhibiting anti–social behaviors. The studies presented, will investigate whether the presence of a
gun, is a stimulus for aggressive behaviors (Berkowitz & Lepage, 1967; Anderson, Benjamin &
Bartholow, 1998; Bartholow, Anderson, Carnagey & Benjamin, 2005). Studies regarding whether
gun ownership influences the likelihood of abnormal behaviors in adolescence will be examined
(Cunningham, Henggler, Limber, Melton & Nation, 2000; Sprinkles, 2007). Gun ownership rates
and various violent acts will also be investigated, such as homicide rates and suicide rates
(Hemenway & Miller, 2000; Killias, Van Kesteren & Rindlisbacher, 2001; Gius, 2009; Siegel, Ross
& King, 2013). Extrinsic factors including race/ethnicity, culture, and the environment will
additionally be addressed (Cunningham et al., 2000; Sprinkles, 2007; Rajan, Namdar & Ruggles,
2015). After all research has been analyzed, it will be apparent that the presence of a firearm is
correlated to aggressive behaviors. Before delving into gun ownership rates, it is important to
discuss the history of experiments regarding gun presence and aggression. An early experiment
conducted by Berkowitz & Lepage (1967), investigated whether the presence of a weapon elicited
